Now, turn our attention to ways of making money from blogging that is more ‘indirect’ in nature - or how to earn money off your blog rather than from it. Many of the following methods are the result of the profile and perceived expertise of the blogger themselves.

Building a profile as a blogger doesn’t happen quickly and starting a blog with some of these hopes should be seen as a long-term thing. My own experience in this area is that now after 18 months of blogging that it’s only been in the last few months that I’ve had opportunities open in most of these areas.

Consulting

When you are perceived as an expert on a topic you will find that people naturally come to you for advice - some of them willing to pay for it. Some niches are probably better positioned than others for their bloggers to get into paid consultancy work of course. Recently, one blogger, who was able to charge himself out at $600 per hour to give advice to a large company. Interestingly I’ve heard of a number of companies in the last 6 months who are developing VOIP services that bloggers will be able to add to their sidebars to enable them to be called by readers for consulting. The systems would have per minute rate on them to automate this consulting process.

Employment Opportunities

Steve Rubel announced that he’d been hired by a bigger PR firm. While he didn’t say it explicitly in his post I suspect that one of the reasons for him landing the job was the profile he’d built over the last year and a half from blogging. Steve’s case is not the only one - bloggers are increasingly being targeted by companies because of their demonstrated abilities in their field of expertise.

There are some businesses who employ people to blog for them either as their main role or part of their role. One of the benefits of blogging about a niche topic that interests you is that you will begin to connect with others who have similar interests and expertise. As you interact with them it’s amazing to see the opportunities for working together that arise.

Speaking Opportunities

This is dependent upon the topic you’re writing about but some lucky bloggers end up with all kinds of opportunities to speak at conferences, workshops, and seminars on their topic of choice. Sometimes they are freebies, other times the conference will cover costs and on other occasions, there are speakers fees.

In conclusion, if you’re planning to use some of these indirect ways of making money because of your blog it’s important that you think seriously about building your own profile and credibility as a blogger, think about the types of people that you respect and look to as experts an consider what they offer in their fields. How to Build a Professional Looking Website

This is how to build a website that you will love and won't have to pay for.

1. Prepare your website plan

Before setting up an account for a free site, decide what the focus of your site will be. Collect Information, pictures, and write some of the text ahead of time to familiarize yourself with your idea and get comfortable with the process. Decide if you will use artwork or photos on your site. Make sure your photos/artwork/music is royalty/copyright free.

2. Research in Google

Use Google or some other search engine and look for websites offering free websites and compare some of your choices.

Remember that when using a free service, your website will be supported by advertising to allow you to get in for free.

Mainly because I now have so many Wordpress sites that I’ve found better plugins to use, and some of the ones I used to love aren’t good anymore.
In addition to that, I’ve learned more about SEO and how to manage WordPress more effectively, which is why I started the series.

One mistake that affiliates often make, in terms of two-tiered programs or multi-tiered programs, is that they tend to spend most of their time trying to get others to sign up for the program, as an affiliate, and less time actually promoting the product.

Promote the product and not the program is one of these ones. However, some people seem to have not listened to this uttermost advice of one of the successful men on the net.Ideally, you should promote the product more and the affiliate programs as you go along, bringing your customers into the affiliate program after you’ve sold them the product.

There are thousands of ways to promote affiliate products, but the worst way of doing it is promoting the programs, since the important thing to do is to assess your own skills and interests, using your strengths.This tends to get you the most income in the long run.Furthermore, with multi-tiered programs, residual income is not always available.

For instance, if Joe signs up under you as an affiliate in a two-tiered program, he may have residual income from a sale, but you may only get a one time commission from that sale he makes. In this instance, you are better off selling the product, not the program, because you would make more in residual income from your own sales in the long run.

While it is nice to have others doing the work for you, the greatest income will come from the work that you do yourself. This also keeps the company that you are selling for stable. For example, if you only promote the program, which is free to join, and everyone that joins under you only promotes the program, nobody is going to make any money, including the company!
Find a balance between promoting the program and the product, promoting the product first, then promoting the program to those who have purchased the product.

For example, to earn money online I recommend creating ezine ads if you are good on that and then link them to a free report, that you divide into a series of articles in order to promote and place them on an autoresponder.But there exist other key points you have to look for before choosing an affiliate program to promote and make money online such as: a site that has a high conversion rate or looks as though it has, an excellent product that will appeal to your niche market, a high commission (40%-50%), programs that pay residual incomes or lifetime commissions.

I suggest also earn money online to try the product before promoting it. He likes to study and use the products he is promoting, because if you like the product you will talk about it with more enthusiasm and your writing will show that, increasing your sales.

Despite other experts consider that is better to offer your own products by the Web to make money online, you do not need to do that to succeed online, according though it is an excellent idea, if you want to get ahead fast.

For Newbies: The Language Of Affiliate Marketing

You are about to encounter a language that you have never heard before – the language of Internet Marketing, as it relates to Affiliate Marketing. It is important that you understand what it all means, to ensure that you are signing up for programs that are worth your time.

As you will learn later, it is important to read the terms and conditions for affiliates. Sometimes, you will be presented with those terms before you sign up, and sometimes you will be presented with them after you sign up – but it is important that you read them, and it is important that you understand what is being said.

It is also important that you understand what the following terms or abbreviations mean:

- CPC –

Cost per click (CPC) is the amount of money an advertiser pays search engines and other Internet publishers for a single click on its advertisement that brings one visitor to its website.This relates to how much it costs for each click an ad or link receives when advertising on a CPC basis. In other words, instead of paying a flat rate for the advertisement, you would pay a certain amount of money for each click the ad receives.

- PPC –

Pay Per Click is an Internet advertising model used on search engines, advertising networks, and content sites, such as blogs, in which advertisers pay their host only when their ad is clicked. With search engines, advertisers typically bid on keyword phrases relevant to their target market. Content sites commonly charge a fixed price per click rather than use a bidding system. This relates to CPC, where you pay for each click that your ad or link receives. Google AdWords is an example of Pay Per Click advertising, but are many of this kind of sites.

-CPA –

Cost per action, or cost per acquisition, is an online advertising pricing model, where the advertiser pays for each specified action (a purchase, a form submission, and so on) linked to the advertisement.

Direct response advertisers consider CPA the optimal way to buy online advertising, as an advertiser only pays for the ad when the desired action has occurred. An action can be a product being purchased, a form being filled, etc. (The desired action to be performed is determined by the advertiser.) Google incorporated this model into Google AdSense but shut down the offering in June 2008.

eBay has recently announced a similar pricing called AdContext.Basically, this means that you will pay each time an action is taken. The action may be a click, a sign-up, or a sale.
In fact, many affiliate programs also pay on a CPA basis, meaning that each time someone clicks on your link or signs up to receive information through your link, you earn a little money. Google AdSense is an example of this.

-CTR –

Click Through Rate, is a way of measuring the success of an online advertising campaign. A CTR is obtained by dividing the number of users who clicked on an ad on a web page by the number of times the ad was delivered (impressions). For example, if a banner ad was delivered 100 times (impressions delivered) and one person clicked on it (clicks recorded), then the resulting CTR would be 1 percent.Banner ad click-through rates have fallen over time, currently averaging much less than 1 percent. In most cases, a 2% clickthrough rate would be considered very successful. By selecting an appropriate advertising site with high affinity (e.g. a movie magazine for a movie advertisement), the same banner can achieve a substantially higher CTR. Personalized ads, unusual formats, and more obtrusive ads typically have higher click-through rates than standard banner ads.

CTR is most commonly defined as the number of clicks divided by a number of impressions and generally not in terms of the number of clicks divided by the number of persons who clicked. This is an important distinction. As a person clicks a single advertisement multiple times, the CTR increases using the latter definition, whereas the CTR doesn't change using the former definition. This number is usually represented as a percentage, and it refers to the number of times your ad was clicked on, in relation to how often the ad was viewed.

-CPM –

Cost per thousand. The amount of money you pay for every one thousand ad impressions.
Also called cost ‰ and cost per thousand (CPT) (in Latin "miles" means thousand), is a commonly used measurement in advertising. Radio, television, newspaper, magazine, Out-of-home advertising and online advertising can be purchased on the basis of what it costs to show the ad to one thousand viewers (CPM). It is used in marketing as a benchmark to calculate the relative cost of an advertising campaign or an ad message in a given medium. Rather than an absolute cost, CPM estimates the cost per 1000 views of the ad.

An example of computing the CPM:

1. The total cost of running the ad is $15,000.
2. The total audience is 2,400,000 people.
3. CPM is calculated as CPM = $15,000/(2,400,000/1000) = $6.25

- URL -

In computing, a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) is a type of Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) that specifies where an identified resource is available and the mechanism for retrieving it. In popular usage and in many technical documents and verbal discussions it is often, imprecisely and confusingly, used as a synonym for uniform resource identifier. The confusion in usage stems from historically different interpretations of the semantics of the terms involved. In popular language, a URL is also referred to as a Web address.Uniform Relay Link, otherwise known as a link, or a website address.

-Affiliate Link –

A URL or link that is assigned to you by the affiliate program.This is the link that you will promote, as it is used to track your clicks and sales.

-Contextual Link or Text Link –

A contextual link is a link that looks like content because it is all text. It may be several words long. A text link is a link such as www.link.com, as opposed to a banner ad.

-Charge Back –

This will be an important term to you. This refers to when customers cancel their orders, or have their credit card companies reverse the charges. It basically means that you lose a sale. Some affiliate programs will hold money back each pay period to cover potential charge backs/refunds, and release that money to you after a specified period.

- SPAM –

Unsolicited Commercial Email. This term also refers to commercial posts on forums and blogs. Most affiliate programs will have strict anti-spam regulations that you must follow.E-mail spam, also known as junk e-mail, is a subset of spam that involves nearly identical messages sent to numerous recipients by e-mail. A common synonym for spam is unsolicited bulk e-mail (UBE). Definitions of spam usually include the aspects that email is unsolicited and sent in bulk. "UCE" refers specifically to unsolicited commercial e-mail.

E-mail spam has steadily, even exponentially grown since the early 1990s to several billion messages a day. Spam has frustrated, confused, and annoyed e-mail users.

-Revenue Sharing Program –

This is the same thing as an affiliate program.
Revenue sharing has multiple, related meanings depending on context.
In business, revenue sharing refers to the sharing of profits and losses among different groups. One form shares between the general partner(s) and limited partners in a limited partnership. Another form shares with a company's employees, and another between companies in a business alliance.

On the Internet, revenue sharing is also known as cost per sale, and accounts for about 80% of affiliate compensation programs. E-commerce web site operators using revenue sharing pay affiliates a certain percentage of sales revenues (usually excluding tax, shipping and other 3rd party cost that the customer pays) generated by customers whom the affiliate refer via various advertising methods. Another form of online revenue sharing consists in people working together and registering online in a way similar to that of a corporation, and sharing the proceeds.

-Co-Branding –

Some affiliate programs offer co-branding options, where your company name or logo is placed on a reseller’s website, or on the product itself.
Co-branding refers to several different marketing arrangements:

Co-branding is when two companies form an alliance to work together, creating marketing synergy. As described in Co-Branding: The Science of Alliance:
"the term 'co-branding' is relatively new to the business vocabulary and is used to encompass a wide range of marketing activity involving the use of two (and sometimes more) brands. Thus co-branding could be considered to include sponsorships, where Marlboro lends it name to Ferrari or accountants Ernst and Young support the Monet exhibition." ”

Co-branding is an arrangement that associates a single product or service with more than one brand name, or otherwise associates a product with someone other than the principal producer. The typical co-branding agreement involves two or more companies acting in cooperation to associate any of various logos, color schemes, or brand identifiers to a specific product that is contractually designated for this purpose. The object for this is to combine the strength of two brands, in order to increase the premium consumers are willing to pay, make the product or service more resistant to copying by private label manufacturers, or to combine the different perceived properties associated with these brands with a single product.

-Referral Link –

- HTML or HTML Code –

HTML stands for Hyper Text Markup Language. This is the programming language used to build webpages. HTML code generally refers to a small portion of HTML code, such as that needed to place affiliate links or banners on your web pages.

HTML, an initialism of HyperText Markup Language, is the predominant markup language for Web pages. It provides a means to describe the structure of text-based information in a document—by denoting certain text as links, headings, paragraphs, lists, and so on—and to supplement that text with interactive forms, embedded images, and other objects.

HTML is written in the form of tags, surrounded by angle brackets. HTML can also describe, to some degree, the appearance and semantics of a document, and can include embedded scripting language code (such as JavaScript) which can affect the behavior of Web browsers and other HTML processors.

-Partner Program -

This is the same thing as an affiliate program. A channel partner program helps vendors' product and associated services via the channel. Partner programs apply to a variety of partner types, including value-added resellers.

This refers to anyone who is making a lot of money in affiliate marketing, if you are an affiliate. However, if you have an affiliate program for your own product, this refers to your top affiliates – the ones who are making the most sales for you.

-Opt-In –

Opt in e-mail is a term used when someone is given the option to receive "bulk" e-mail, that is, e-mail that is sent to many people at the same time. Typically, this is some sort of mailing list, newsletter, or advertising. Obtaining permission before sending e-mail is critical because without it, the e-mail is Unsolicited Bulk Email, better known as spam.

There are several common forms of opt-in e-mail:

Unconfirmed opt-in

A new subscriber first gives his/her address to the list software (for instance, on a Web page), but no steps are taken to make sure that this address actually belongs to the person. This can cause e-mail from the mailing list to be considered spam because simple typos of the email address can cause the email to be sent to someone else. Malicious subscriptions are also possible, as are subscriptions that are due to spammers forging email addresses that are sent to the e-mail address used to subscribe to the mailing list.

Confirmed opt-in (COI)

A new subscriber asks to be subscribed to the mailing list, but unlike unconfirmed opt-in, a confirmation e-mail is sent to verify it was really them. Many believe the person must not be added to the mailing list unless an explicit step is taken, such as clicking a special web link or sending back a reply e-mail. This ensures that no person can subscribe someone else out of malice or error. Mail system administrators and non-spam mailing list operators refer to this as confirmed subscription or closed-loop opt-in.

Some marketers call closed loop opt-in "double opt-in."

The term double opt-in was coined by marketers in the late 90s to differentiate it from what they call single opt-in, where a new subscriber to an e-mail list gets a confirmation e-mail telling them they will begin to receive e-mails if they take no action. This is compared to double opt-in where the new subscriber must respond to the confirmation e-mail to be added to the list.

Some marketers contend that double opt-in is like asking for permission twice and that it constitutes unnecessary interference with someone who has already said they want to hear from the marketer.

The term double opt-in has also been co-opted by spammers, diluting its value.

Instead of giving people the option to be put in the list, they are automatically put in and have the option to be taken out.The term opt-out refers to several methods by which individuals can avoid receiving unsolicited product or service information. This ability is usually associated with direct marketing campaigns such as e-mail marketing, or direct mail. A list of those who have opted out is called a Robinson list.

-E-mail Authentication-

E-mail authentication is a technique for validating that a person claiming to possess a particular email address actually does so. This is normally done by sending an email containing a token to the address, and requiring that the party being authenticated supply that token before the authentication proceeds. The email containing the token is usually worded so as to explain the situation to the recipient and discourage them from supplying the nonce (often via visiting a URL) unless they in fact were attempting to authenticate.

For example:

suppose that one party, Alice, operates a website on which visitors can make accounts to participate or gain access to content.

Another party, Bob, comes to that website and makes an account. Bob supplies an email address at which he can be contacted, but Alice does not yet know that Bob is being truthful (consciously or not) about the address.

Alice sends a token to Bob's email address for an authentication request, asking Bob to click on a particular URL if and only if the recipient of the mail was making an account on Alice's website.

Bob receives the mail and clicks the URL, demonstrating to Alice that he controls the email address he claimed to have.

If instead a hostile party, Chuck, were to visit Alice's website attempting to masquerade as Bob, he would be unable to register for an account because the confirmation would be sent to Bob's email address, which Chuck does not control.

This degree of email authentication is considered by many anti-spam advocates to be the minimum degree necessary for any opt-in email advertising or other ongoing email communication.This refers to ezine subscriptions, newsletter subscriptions, or email lists in general. Basically, it means that the subscribers on an email list have chosen to receive the information the list owner is sending. Typically, they have confirmed their email address and their request by clicking on a link in a
confirmation email, which is known as double opt-in.

-1st Tier and 2nd Tier –

If you are signing up for an affiliate program, directly through the company, you are first tier. If you are signing up under someone else, you are 2nd tier.
However, when someone signs up under you, you are first tier, and they are your 2nd tier. Each tier gets a different commission rate for sales. In other words, when you sign up under someone else, when you make a sale, you get a full commission, and the person you signed up under gets a partial commission.

-Joint Ventures –

A joint venture (often abbreviated JV) is an entity formed between two or more parties to undertake economic activity together. The parties agree to create a new entity by both contributing equity, and they then share in the revenues, expenses, and control of the enterprise. The venture can be for one specific project only, or a continuing business relationship such as the Fuji Xerox joint venture. This is in contrast to a strategic alliance, which involves no equity stake by the participants, and is a much less rigid arrangement.

The phrase generally refers to the purpose of the entity and not to a type of entity. Therefore, a joint venture may be a corporation, limited liability company, partnership or other legal structure, depending on a number of considerations such as tax and tort liability.

Joint ventures are similar to affiliate programs, but they operate a bit differently. The concept is the same – one person promotes another person’s product for a commission. However, usually the commissions are bigger, and the person doing the promoting is working directly with the owner of
the product.

Joint ventures are not uncommon in the oil and gas industry, and are often cooperations between a local and foreign company (about 3/4 are international). A joint venture is often seen as a very viable business alternative in this sector, as the companies can complement their skill sets while it offers the foreign company a geographic presence. Studies show a failure rate of 30-61%, and that 60% failed to start or faded away within 5 years. (Osborn, 2003) It is also known that joint ventures in low-developed countries show a greater instability, and that JVs involving government partners have higher incidence of failure (private firms seem to be better equipped to supply key skills, marketing networks etc.) Furthermore, JVs have shown to fail miserably under highly volatile demand and rapid changes in product technology.

Some countries, such as the People's Republic of China and to some extent India, require foreign companies to form joint ventures with domestic firms in order to enter a market. This requirement often forces technology transfers and managerial control to the domestic partner.

Another form joint ventures may take are the Joint Ventures (JV's) in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico dedicated to the conservation of priority bird species and their associated habitats. Each of these JV's is different in how they go about their respective missions but all try to follow the principles of Strategic Habitat Conservation (SHC). SHC combines biological planning, conservation design, conservation delivery, and evaluation and monitoring. Gulf Coast Joint Venture, Lower Mississippi Valley Joint Venture, and Prairie Pothole Joint Venture are just three of the 20+ JV's found in North America.

-Direct Mail –

Advertising mail, also known as direct mail, junk mail, or admail, is the delivery of advertising material to recipients of postal mail. The delivery of advertising mail forms a large and growing service for many postal services, and direct mail marketing forms a significant portion of the direct marketing industry. Some organizations attempt to help people opt-out of receiving advertising mail, in many cases motivated by a concern over its negative environmental impact.

Advertising mail includes advertising circulars, catalogs, CDs, “pre-approved” credit card applications, and other commercial merchandising materials delivered to both homes and businesses. It may be addressed to pre-selected individuals, or unaddressed and delivered on a neighbourhood-by-neighbourhood basis. This refers to advertising that is done via postal mail. There are strict laws about direct mail, and many affiliate programs will have terms and conditions relating to direct mail to promote their product.

-Cookies –

A cookie is a piece of code that is written to the cookie file on a person’s computer when they click on an affiliate link – or when they visit sites that use cookies, such as sites that require a login. The cookie does not harm your customer’s computer at all and is simply there to make sure that you get
credit for the sale if they come back later to make a purchase.

- Affiliate Agreement –

The agreement that usually lists the terms and conditions related to an affiliate program. In most cases, you will agree to the affiliate agreement by checking a box when you fill out an online form to join the program. Some affiliate programs, however, will require you to print out, sign,
and fax the agreement. Make sure you read these agreements.
In affiliate programs, it is the terms of service between the advertiser and the affiliate, which defines and governs the affiliate relationship. The affiliate agreement will specify what both parties are responsible for, payout terms and commission for conversions. Most affiliate programs will ask you to agree to the affiliate agreement before submitting your application to join the program.

- Conversion Rate –

This is the number of sales in relation to the number of clicks received. Usually portrayed as a percentage.In Online Advertising it is the percentage of visitors who take a desired action (e.g. make a purchase or click an ad).

The desired action can take many forms, varying from site to site. Examples include sales of products, membership registrations, newsletter subscriptions, software downloads, or just about any activity beyond simple page browsing.

-Commission –

The amount of money that you as an affiliate will receive per sale. Some companies will list this as a percentage, such as 50%, while others will list it as a dollar figure.The payment of commission as remuneration for services rendered or products sold is a common way to reward salespeople. Payments often will be calculated on the basis of a percentage of the goods sold.

Commission rates are generally based upon the achievement of specific targets which have been agreed between management and the salesperson in question.

Offering monetary compensation in the form of commission alone, or commission in addition to salary rather than simply a fixed salary is intended to create a strong incentive for employees to invest maximum effort into their work. Common industries where a commission is used include car sales, property sales, insurance broking and many other sales jobs.

-Associate or Associate Program –

Program associates fill a variety of different roles, including that of an office administrator, strategic planner, and project manager. This role is often found in nonprofits and professional associations, where fundraising and donor programs are key to ensuring the sustainability of the organization.

-Banner Ad –

A graphic that is placed on your website and linked to your affiliate link.A web banner or banner ad is a form of advertising on the World Wide Web. This form of online advertising entails embedding an advertisement into a web page. It is intended to attract traffic to a website by linking to the website of the advertiser.
The advertisement is constructed from an image (GIF, JPEG, PNG), JavaScript program or multimedia object employing technologies such as Silverlight, Java, Shockwave or Flash, often employing animation, sound, or video to maximize presence. Images are usually in a high-aspect ratio shape (i.e. either wide and short, or tall and narrow) hence the reference to banners.
These images are usually placed on web pages that have interesting content, such as a newspaper article or an opinion piece.

The web banner is displayed when a web page that references the banner is loaded into a web browser. This event is known as an "impression". When the viewer clicks on the banner, the viewer is directed to the website advertised in the banner. This event is known as a "click-through". In many cases, banners are delivered by a central ad server.

When the advertiser scans their log files and detects that a web user has visited the advertiser's site from the content site by clicking on the banner ad, the advertiser sends the content provider some small amount of money (usually around five to ten US cents). This payback system is often how the content provider is able to pay for the Internet access to supply the content in the first place.

Web banners function the same way as traditional advertisements are intended to function: notifying consumers of the product or service and presenting reasons why the consumer should choose the product in question, although web banners differ in that the results for advertisement campaigns may be monitored real-time and may be targeted to the viewer's interests.

Many web surfers regard these advertisements as highly annoying because they distract from a web page's actual content or waste bandwidth. (Of course, the purpose of the banner ad is to attract attention and many advertisers try to get attention to the advert by making them annoying. Without attracting attention it would provide no revenue for the advertiser or for the content provider.)

Newer web browsers often include options to disable pop-ups or block images from selected websites. Another way of avoiding banners is to use a proxy server that blocks them, such as Privoxy.
If you come across other terms or abbreviations that you aren’t sure of the meaning of, make sure that you stop and go find out what it means before agreeing to anything – or before doing anything.

Not knowing can cause problems later on.

How do bloggers make money from blogs?

I’ve been reflecting this week on the amazing diversity of opportunities that are opening up for bloggers to make money from blogging. I’ve long advised that bloggers seeking to make money from blogging spread their interests across multiple revenue streams so as not to put all their eggs in one basket.

‘The wonderful thing is that this is becoming easier and easier to do 2008 has seen many options opening up. I thought: I’d take a look at some of the methods that bloggers are using to make money through blogs’.

What can you do to Make Money Blogging?

Simply you make your blog from Blogger (free), you can copy anything you want from this blog but without you don't put your affiliate links, look at the next free programs and choose anyone, or all get from them the links and do money ...simple no?

Advertising Programs Perhaps the most obvious changes in the past few months have been a variety of practical advertising options for bloggers looking to make money from their blogs. The most common way bloggers seem to earn money online is via the contextual ad program from “Google Adsense”.

Targeted blog advertising with “PerformancingAds”, “BidVertiser”, “Linkrefferal”, “AlternateURL”, “Classifieds”, “Contact them”. There is more to come with MSN Adcenter and YPN both in beta testing and with a variety of other advertising systems now in development (YPN is only available to US publishers).

Lastly, there’s BlogAds - one of the first blog specific ad networks.

RSS Advertising

The past 12 months have seen some advances in RSS Advertising as well. I’m yet to hear of any bloggers making big money blogging through it to this point - but as improvements made to the ad programs exploring this, I’m sure we’ll start to see examples of it being profitable.

Affiliate marketing network portal

There are larger affiliate programs like “Amazon”, “Click2Sell”, “Clickbank”, “E-junkie” but also literally thousands of others from the large to the very small. A large network offering hundreds of programs: pay-per-sale, pay-per-lead, and pay-per-click programs. More than 2,000 merchants. Each of these merchants has a different type of product that they are selling, and each is ready to give you a commission on that sale if you bring a customer to them. It has a strong pro-affiliate attitude and despises parasites. Have lots of data feeds.

Affiliate Programs

Affiliate Programs also are known as associate programs, partnership programs or reseller programs, are generally pay-per-sale marketing programs. The programs are for selling products or services and based on the concept of revenue sharing.

Digital Assets

Increasing numbers of bloggers have developed other digital assets to support and ad revenue streams to their blogs. By this, I mean that I’m increasingly seeing e-books, courses being run by bloggers. My recent foray into this with the first series of the six-figure blogging course that Andy and I ran a few weeks ago and have just released the study version of. This type of activity will only increase in future - in fact, this week I’ve seen many examples of bloggers running courses.

My advice is to sell products from Amazon because they generate for you one Store with which products choose you from them. But you can find any program you like.

Blog Network Opportunities

With the rising popularity of Blog Networks, bloggers are also being presented with more places to earn an income from their blogging, by writing for and with others. While it might be difficult to get a writing gig with one of the bigger networks, there are plenty who are always asking for new bloggers to join and who are willing to pay bloggers using a variety of payment models. While there are distinct advantages of blogging for yourself, blogging for an established network who will handle a lot of the setup/promotion/admin/SEO etc has its advantages as well. More and more bloggers are combining writing for themselves on their own blogs with taking on blog network blogs as more income streams.

Business Blog Writing Opportunities

As blogging has risen in its profile as a medium more and more businesses are starting blogs. Many of these companies have internal staff take on blogging duties - but an increasing number of them are hiring specialist bloggers to come on and run their blogs. I know of a number of bloggers who in the past month or two have approached for such paid work. Check out Bloggers for Hire if you’re looking for this type of work.

Non-Blogging Writing Opportunities

Also, becoming more common are bloggers being hired to write in non-blogging mediums. Manolo’s recent coup of a column in the Washington Post is just one example of this as bloggers are increasingly being approached to write for newspapers, magazines, and other non-blog websites. Alongside this is the rise of bloggers as published book authors, this is to the extent that one blogger I spoke with this week complained to me that they were one of the few bloggers that they knew who didn’t have a book deal!

Donations

Tip Jars and donation buttons have been a part of blogging for years now but this last year saw a number of bloggers go full-time after fundraising drives. Perhaps the most high-profile of these was Jason Kotoko who through generosity his readership was able to quit his job and become a full-time blogger. For taking a donation button you must have a PayPal account and you take it.

Flipping Blogs

Also, more common in 2005 was the practice of ‘Blog Flipping’, or selling of blogs. This has happened both on a personal blog level but also on a network level, the most obvious of these being the 8 figure sale of Weblogs Inc to AOL.

Merchandising

My recent attempt to sell T-shirts wasn’t a raging success, but it is an example of how an increasing number of bloggers are attempting to make a few extra dollars from their blogs by selling branded products through programs like “Cafepress”. While I didn’t have a lot of success with merchandising, quite a few larger blogs are seeing significant sales, especially blogs with a cult following.

Consulting and Speaking

While it has been popular for established consultants to add blogs to their businesses were also starting to see bloggers with no consulting background able to make money by charging readers for their time in consulting scenarios because of the profile that their blogs have built them. Blogging is the ability to prove people as experts on niche topics and we all know the value of being perceived as an expert. I spoke to one blogger last month who charges himself out at over $200 an hour for speaking and consulting work, his area of ability was something that he knew little about 18 months ago, but through his blog, he’s become a leader in his field and a minor celebrity in his industry.

The Cookies Fortune

Cookies are pieces of information sent by a Web server to a Web browser that the browser software is expected to save and send back to the server whenever the browser makes additional requests from the server.

Cookies might contain information such as log-in or registration information, shopping cart information, user preferences, and so on. When a server receives a request from a browser that includes a cookie, the server is able to use the information stored in the cookie.

For example, a server might receive affiliate tracking data from a user's browser that attributes a sale or lead to an affiliate.

A tug of war is going on between affiliates and everybody else over the business of cookies. And as the cookie crumbles, affiliates are losing out because of users disabling and deleting their cookies, because of short expiration times (if cookies are being used at all), and because of other anti-cookie forces of nature.What it all comes down to is something of a virtual Boston Tea Party. Affiliates are giving "click action" without "commission" and they're not going to take it anymore.

Cookies are usually set to expire after a predetermined amount of time and are usually saved in memory until the browser software is closed down, at which time they may be saved to disk if they haven't expired.

The problem is :

It's pretty simple: The average user on the Internet is not buying a product on his or her first visit -- and, in most cases, subsequent visits -- to your site. This negatively affects affiliates if you do not award commission on repeat visits through cookies.

Depending on the type of cookie used and the browser's settings, the browser may or may not accept the cookie, and it may save the cookie for either a short time or a long time.
In a recent poll of affiliate managers from the United States Affiliate Manager Coalition (USAMC), nearly half of the affiliate programs are offering cookies for only 30 days or fewer. More than 10 percent offer no cookies at all.
Since affiliate marketing is based on performance, affiliates are up in arms that their performance is not being fairly tracked.

"The No. 1 fault of affiliate programs is the ability to allow the merchant to set cookies at zero days or a short length of time, such as under five days. This effectively eliminates the chance for affiliates to earn commissions and repeat shopping revenue and all buyers not purchasing on the first click-through," commented Mike Hyland ("Webmaster Mike") of Image Marketing Services.

"The average consumer visits five to seven sites when shopping for a product with a cost of $75 or more, or a technical product like digital cameras, computers, and home electronics, so return-day cookies beyond 10 days are essential," continued Hyland.

-Providing a Cookie Solution

The affiliate solution providers vary in their approach to the use of cookies by merchants. For instance, Commission Junction, Moreniche.com, and Google Affiliate Network enable merchants to edit the cookie length, and this information is made available to affiliates for each merchant.

In addition to the cookie

Affiliates face at the hands of merchants, the general public also presents a hurdle for affiliates to collect their commissions.
In response to the public outcry for more privacy, there is a new standard called the Platform for Privacy Preferences Project (P3P), which mandates that Web sites provide machine-readable versions of data-collection and data-sharing practices.P3P is a browser specification developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) that examines XML tags tied to elements contained in a corporate privacy statement, and then triggers privacy settings matched to a user's set of privacy preferences.

Sites that provide third-party cookies to track e-commerce activity are being encouraged by the W3C to complete P3P requirements. Internet Explorer 6.0, under its default settings, will automatically block many cookies routinely placed on visiting browsers unless a site has acceptable privacy provisions in place.

This feature, known as a "Cookie Cutter," is another cookie concern for affiliates.
Are you a cookie monster? Your company controls whether you are P3P compliant and the number of days that you pay affiliates through cookies. Do the right thing: Comply with the P3P standards, and set those cookies for at least 30 days.

- Search affiliates that utilize pay per click search engines to promote the advertisers' offers ( search arbitrage);
- Content and niche market websites, including product review sites;
- Loyalty websites, typically characterized by providing a reward system for purchases via points back, cash back, or charitable donations;
- Coupon and rebate websites that focus on sales promotions;
- Registration path or co-registration affiliates who include offers from other merchants during the registration process on their own website;
- Personal websites (This type of website was the reason for the birth of affiliate marketing; however, such websites are almost reduced to complete irrelevance compared to the other types of affiliate websites);
- E-mail list affiliates (owners of large opt-in -mail lists that typically employ e-mail drip marketing) and newsletter list affiliates, which are typically more content-heavy;

How To Make Money From Your Blog with Direct Methods

Having thought through whether you should blog for money it is now worth taking a look at some of the different models for doing so.I tend to break the different models that bloggers are using to make money from blogging into two areas: How To Make Money From Your Blog with Direct Methods

Direct Income Earning Methods - these methods are where a blogger earns an income directly from their blog.
Indirect Income Earning Methods - these methods are where a blogger earns an income because of their blog.

Please note that on occasion in the following post there will be few affiliate links to services that I use and have had some success with.

Make-money Direct Methods :

Advertising

There are many ways of selling advertising space on a blog (this could almost be a series of its own) but some of the different advertising options that I see bloggers experimenting with include:

Programs like Google AdSense and YPN -(beta{only for US}) are contextual and very popular with bloggers and are probably the most common income stream being used by them today (MSN are developing one too).
In short - these programs scan the content of your blog to assertion what it’s topic is an attempt to put contextually relevant ads (text and image) onto your blog.
They are generally simple to use and involve pasting some code into your blog’s templates.
Payment is on a ‘per click’ basis (referred to as CPC or ‘cost per click’ ads).
They are not so good with ‘general’ type blogs ( many topics) and/or political/spiritual blogs which argue just one side of a case (this confuses AdSense).Must have one blog about one thing only: make money, marketing, family, social class, tips, etc...

Other CPC Advertising

There are a variety of other ad systems that pay on a per click basis which are not contextual in nature (which is important as systems like AdSense do not allow you to run contextual ads on the same page view as them). These systems include Chitika’s eMiniMalls which I reviewed here.

Impression Based Ads

Impression based ads pay a small amount for every person who views the advertisement.
The amount that they pay varies from program to program (and ad to ad) and is generally a fraction of a cent.
There are a variety of ad systems around like this including Fastclick which I reviewed here and Tribal Fusion.
Impression based ads won’t earn you much if you don’t have a lot of traffic but can be great if you do.

Blog Ads

BlogAds has become something of an institution when it comes to advertising on blogs.
Bloggers set their own rates and can accept or reject advertisers that apply to them to be featured on their blogs.
These ads put the control of what ads show and how much they earn into the hands of the blogger.
The downside is that if you price them too high you could never have any ads showing at all.
They can also be difficult to be accepted into as a publisher as these days they only accept people into the system if they have a someone who is already in ’sponsor’ or recommend the new publisher.

Text Ads

Another increasingly popular way to sell ads on your blog is to look into text links.
They don’t take up much room and that depending on the system you choose to run them you can have control over which advertisers you accept and reject.

Text Link Ads is another text link seller that more and more bloggers are using. The beauty of both of these systems is that they have a pool of advertisers already so you don’t have to go looking for your own advertisers. Their systems are also both very automated and are just a matter of pasting some code onto your blog. But they don’t earn anywhere near as much as Google AdSense or Chitika for me they add up over the year and have done well for me. BidVertiser and Classifieds are another systems that I know is popular with some (we’ve used them quite successfully on b5media although I have little personal experience with them).

RSS Ads

A popular way for people to read blogs is via RSS. As result publishers and ad providers have been keen to find ways to place ads in feeds. These attempts have been met with a variety of success levels. I’m yet to hear of too many people making big dollars with RSS ads yet but the ad systems seem to be improving. AdSense offers RSS ads to some of its publishers (you have to have a certain number of impressions first) as does YPN. Feedburner is a tool I’ve used to help monetize my own feeds - they give publishers three options
1. AdSense if you’ve been approved by them,
2. Amazon affiliate program
3. if you have a lot of subscribers (over 500) they have an Ad Network.

Other Ads Systems

In addition to the above systems (most of which I’ve used myself) are many other advertising options which I’ve not had experience with and so won’t personally recommend. I’m sure they are worth experimenting with however as I see many of them being used by bloggers every day. Here they are in no particular order:

Another form of advertising that a smaller number of bloggers are using it to find their own advertisers.
All of the above systems have the advantage of finding you advertisers (or at least assisting in the automation of ads to your blog) but as your blog grows in profile and influence you might find other options for private deals come up.
The big blog networks have people dedicated to the task of finding advertisers (often working through ad agencies) but smaller bloggers might find this worthwhile also. I’ve been selling ads on my Digital Camera Blog for two years now and as it’s grown in traffic and profile and managed to attract larger companies (who are willing to pay more) to buys space. Currently, the blog features ads from Adobe who have bought a combination of banner, newsletter and text ads. There are a variety of ads that you can offer them including banner ads, buttons, text links, mentions in newsletters and even individual post sponsorships.

Affiliate Programs

Affiliate programs are where you take a commission for referring a reader who purchases a product or service to a company.
Probably the most common of these for bloggers is Amazon which has tens of thousands of products that you can link to.
Other affiliate programs that represent many different companies and products include Commission Junction, Clickbank, E-junkie, Moreniche, Click2Sell
Affiliate programs take some work if you want to get the most out of them (perhaps more work than advertising) but can be lucrative if you match the right program with the right blog/topic. Selling/Flipping Blogs

The idea of selling (or flipping) your blog is one that many bloggers have in the back of their minds for ‘one day’ but in reality, it is not something that is overly common… yet.
Probably the largest sale is that of Weblogs Inc (a network of blogs) which sold to AOL for a reported $25 million. Of course, this is the stuff that most of us can only dream of - but there are examples of smaller blogs being sold, either privately or via auctions on sites like eBay and SitePoint. One such auction was that of the Blog Herald which took place here.Starting a blog with the main goal of selling it down the track is one that I’ve heard of a number of bloggers doing but few have been successful. Rather than starting with this intention I think if you start with the intention of building a quality site that has a large readership and it’s own good income stream you are more likely to find buyers down the track.

Donations and Tip Jars

A very small number of blogs have a history of making good money with these (Jason Kottke being one of them).
To be successful with asking for money from readers you’ll want to have a large and loyal readership (and a rich one might help too).
Most bloggers just don’t have the critical mass or the cult following to make it work.
For taking a donation button you must have a Paypal account and you take it.

Merchandise

Another method that some blogs use with reasonable effect is to sell T-Shirts, Mugs, Stickers etc with the blog’s name, logo and/or taglines on it.
This is another idea that will probably only work if you either have a brilliantly designed merchandise range and/or you have a cult-like status as a blogger with some fanatical readers who are a little obsessive about your blog.
Some blog topics lend themselves to this more than others.

Selling Subscriptions

The idea of charging readers for content is one that surfaces from time to time.
While there are numerous websites around the web that do this successfully (community membership sites) I’m yet to see many (any) blogs do it well.
The problem that most bloggers who have tried it have run into is that most topics that you could think to start a blog about already have free sites available.
To make it succeed you would need to have some sort of premium/exclusive content and/or real expertise on a topic.

Blog Networks

Another source for bloggers are blog networks.
There are two ways to make money here:

- firstly you can start a network and contract bloggers to write for you
- secondly, you might like to join a blog network as a writer

There are many networks out there and all have their own strengths and weaknesses. I’ll attempt to write a post on what to think about when you’re looking at whether to join a network later in this series.

This is dependent upon the topic you’re writing about but some lucky bloggers end up with all kinds of opportunities to speak at conferences, workshops, and seminars on their topic of choice. Sometimes they are freebies, other times the conference will cover costs and on other occasions, there are speakers fees.

In conclusion, if you’re planning to use some of these indirect ways of making money because of your blog it’s important that you think seriously about building your own profile and credibility as a blogger,think about the types of people that you respect and look to as experts an consider what they offer in their fields. These people are generally original thinkers that not only report what others are doing, but who provide answers and vision for their industry.
