Ideally, it combines a chatroom with blogging, giving the resulting 140 or less character messages the term “micro-blogging”. But Twitter is more than a chatroom, though less than a blog. Updates on witter are not exactly “live”, though at the rate users tweet (on average there are 1 billion tweets made on any given day!), depending on how many followers you have on your list, your stream could be refreshing just like a chatroom does. Twitter gives you the opportunity to share thoughts, ask questions, or just check in during your daily routine.

If you’re new to Twitter, you may find the following definitions of Twitter-specific social network terminology to be quite helpful:

Twitter: Twitter, Twitter.com – the site, Twitter

Tweet, Tweeting, Tweeted: to post a message, posting a message, posted a message

Follow: this is similar to “friending” or “adding” someone to your friends’ list; when you follow someone on Twitter you’ll see their updates on your homepage, or stream, which brings me to the next definition:

Stream: this is your Twitter “homepage”, where you’ll see a continually updated list of tweets from all of the Twitter users that you follow

Retweet, or RT: when you retweet a message, you are quoting it in its entirety (unless you modify the message before retweeting) to all of your followers, and giving credit to the original user who wrote the message

Reply, or @: when you reply or “@” a Twitter user, you are sending a publicly viewable response to their tweet to them – it can be seen on your timeline, but their username is included at the beginning of your reply, so they’ll see it

Direct Message, or DM: this is a private message, similar to what you would send on Facebook or on a forum

There are over 200 million registered users on Twitter

Twitter has 100+ million active users every month

50 million users sign in to Twitter each day

55 million users use their mobile device or table to sign in to Twitter

Twitter has over 400 million visitors each month

One billion new tweets are made in a 5 day period

Pretty awesome, huh?

The Indian branches of Facebook and Google have already complied with the ruling in New Delhi, removing pages that are considered to be socially or religiously offensive. Authorities in India have passed laws requiring web hosts to remove content within 36 hours of being notified.

Google has been long known for refuting and resisting government censorship, but due to the need to branch out into new markets, the company complied with the ruling, despite its controversial nature.

Hopefully this list of five common no-no’s of pay-per-click analysis will help you out.

Take care with data mining. Data mining is not only a trending term, but it can also be a dirty one. You see, while it’s great that we have so much data to mine and process, it’s bad because you wind up lumping a lot of the results together, under-analyzing and over-analyzing. Do better with data mining by starting small. Assess your traffic on the weekends, or the change in click-through rates at various times of the year. By approaching data mining small, and focusing on specific tangents of your PPC campaigns and results, you’ll be able to better process the data that you have.

Stop averaging your averages. If you’re using Google Adwords in particular, calculated metrics are one thing to watch out for, because these values should not be averaged without taking into accuont weighting. Different impressions means different results, even within one “average”. Use calculated metrics for more accurate averages.

Streamline your conversion types. It’s smart to track multiple types of conversion for your PPC campaigns, but remember that each individual conversion may not have the same weight or value as another one. Choose one type of conversion to optomize, or use Google’s AdWords API to extract data individually.

Watch the impression share on broad match campaigns. Impression shares don’t mean very much when you don’t know which search queries you’re creating impressions and advertising campaigns for. Ditch broad matches, or ditch meaningful impression share metrics.

Don’t sort by CPA. It can be tempting to sort CPA from high to low in order to weed out low performance groups of ads or keywords, but when you sort by CPA, you miss keywords that don’t have any conversions. Sort by cost instead to look for and weed out problems.

When performing SEO tactics, you will focus heavily on your website, and inbound and outbound links. Social media optimization (SMO) is the practice of using social media sites (Facebook, MySpace, Pinterest, Twitter, YouTube, etc.) to drive more traffic to your website, which in turn boosts your SEO rankings. SEO and SMO can work closely together, and for an ideal relationship between your website and search engines, you shouldn’t do one without the other.

This means that copywritten content features not only great content that human visitors will find exciting, entertaining, and useful; but that the content will also contain valuable keywords and search terms that will draw search engine bots in.

The purpose of copywriting is to boost search engine rankings. There’s no clearer way to say it. But copywriting is a delicate balance between writing for people and writing for computers, so you can’t ramble on excessively (or you’ll bore your human visitors), and you can’t drop keywords in every other sentence (or you’ll discourage search engine bots).

When writing copywrite, it’s best to produce an article that is 300-500 words in length, broken up in 3-4 paragraphs. Ideally there should be a heading and perhaps 1-2 sub-headings to help transition readers from one paragraph to another. Strong, primary keywords should always be used in headings and in sub-headings, and used sporadically (no more than 2-3 times per paragraph) in the content. Supportive keywords can be used as well, though these too should be used only sparingly.

When written well, copywritten articles can provide your site with great SEO potential!

As of Wednesday, January 25th, 2012, Google’s Top Search Queries feature has been updated to better match expectations about rankings. Prior to the update all URLs from your site for a given query were reported by their average position; now the report will feature the averaged top position.

What can you expect from the changes? Well, historical data will not change, so you’ll always have it to reference. But feature calculations for Average Position may stay the same, or even decrease, since lower-ranking URLs will no longer be averaged in.

To say that Google wants to increases the number of users on its very own social network is an understatement. Over the past several weeks Google has launched a flurry of efforts to bring in new users, and this automated process during registration is just one more thing Google has decided to do.

Fresh from Google’s post on Inside Search:

We’ve heard complaints from users that if they click on a result and it’s difficult to find the actual content, they aren’t happy with the experience. Rather than scrolling down the page past a slew of ads, users want to see content right away.
So sites that don’t have much content “above-the-fold” can be affected by this change. If you click on a website and the part of the website you see first either doesn’t have a lot of visible content above-the-fold or dedicates a large fraction of the site’s initial screen real estate to ads, that’s not a very good user experience.

Such sites may not rank as highly going forward.

Moral of the story? As always, you want to focus on providing users with as much content as possible above the fold – or, at the very least, if your layout requires more space above the fold, make sure that the majority of any ads or sponsorship banners are placed well below the fold.

Karl Ribas recently posted a list of great social media tips for small businesses, and some of them are just too good to pass up on sharing with you!

Create a plan and then execute it. While you may be tempted to simply jump into social media, posting everywhere can come across as chaotic, disorganized, and perhaps a bit desperate. Use a posting timeline to help you manage what you post and when.

Pick a voice and stick with it. Will you address your audience as an individual representing your company, or as the company itself?

Involve yourself with the conversation. Interact with not only your followers, but their followers, too.

Post not only content that promotes your business, but content that relates to it. If your specialty is search engine optimization, then you’ll not only want to post promotions for your company, but information on SEO in general – news articles, tips, tidbits, etc.

Social media is free to use. You do yourself a disadvantage by not taking advantage of it. True, you may need to increase your budget in order to appoint an employee (or employees) to handle your social media needs, but social media in and of itself is free, and an investment worth taking on.

This is a bit of humor, FYI. If you want to maintain an open line of communication with your consumers, broaden your reach, target new audiences, and raise your ranking considerably, then you’ll definitely want to have a blog to go along with your company’s website!

Because you want to be unreachable. Who needs a blog? That would just encourage consumers to to try contact you (psst – don’t forget to take down your contact info from your company’s main website, too!).

Because consumers might find out more about you. It’s all about keeping secrets, remember?

Because you’re going to party like it’s 1899. Or even 1999, when Twitter was still seven years from creation.

Because your employees need to be kept busy taking inventory, then taking it again, and again, and again.

Because putting together pricey and tacky radio jingles for advertising purposes makes so much more sense.

With numerous changes made to Google’s algorithm, new and unique content is more important than ever. Regardless of what year it is content will always be king in the world of search engine optimization, but there are still some forecasted tip and trends you’ll want to keep in mind.

1. Content is king. As always, keep the focus on unique content, and make sure that the content has a good ratio of human-friendly content (content designed for visitors to read) and bot-friendly content (content designed for search engine bots to parse).

2. Design for mobile devices. More users than ever are accessing the web via mobile devices (smart phones, tablets, iPads), so it’s important that your site remain accessible and useable for them.

3. Ditch the SEO consultant (maybe). Depending on how large your company is and how much work you need to put into your website, you may find that you and your in-house employees have a firm enough grip on all things SEO-oriented that you don’t need to outsource any SEO work — or at least, any SEO consultation.

4. It’s all about the media. If written content is king, then media content (photos, videos) are queen. Not only will photos and videos draw in your visitors, they’ll indicate to search engines that your website and its content are diverse, which can mean higher rankings.

5. Sharing is caring. Continue to branch out to social media – Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and more!

If you plan on doing most of your work virtually, there are definitely some things you’ll want to keep in mind. Running a virtual sales store and making sure it’s a success is a little different than running a traditional brick and mortar establishment.

Build the right team. You can’t run a successful virtual business on your own. You’re going to need help. And choosing the right salespeople and representatives can make all of the difference in the world. The majority of great salespeople are self-motivated and have great self-discipline, but the isolation that comes with working without a supervisor standing over your shoulder can be wearing. Keep up with your team with weekly meetings, or daily check-ins and updates via email. Maintain an open line of communication to not only remind your salespeople of your presence, but to encourage them to come to you with any concerns or suggestions they may have.

Keep your expectations consistent. Most virtual employees will prioritize tasks on their own, so if you have a specific order or strategy in mind, make sure it’s known from the get-go. This is especially important with new employees, or employees who are new to the virtual business world.

Arm yourself with the right tools. Make use of webcams, microphones, headsets, and audio/video conferencing software to make it easy to coordinate meetings with your staff.

Focus on the results. With virtual salespeople being hundreds if not thousands of miles away from you, it can be hard and to keep track of moment-by-moment results. So instead, focus on “goals” – monthly or even weekly results. Provide plenty of praise for jobs well done, and don’t be afraid to apply criticism — along with encouragement — to those employees who are falling far below your expectations.

On the SEO front, here is a random collection of 2011′s top SEO trends – I wonder how many of these we’ll see implemented in 2012?

Focus on local listings. Focusing on boosting the ranks of small- and mid-sized businesses, the practice of localized search engine optimization has done well in 2011, andw ill most likely be around in 2012, too.

Useful and unique content. Success in SEO marketing in 2011 had a lot to do with blogs and websites in general posting information that is unique (the only of its kind on the market) as well as useful. This should be a no-brainer, and this trend will hopefully be around to stay.

Mobile-friendly optimization. Websites that are not only optimized for mobile display and navigation but are also optimized clearly emerged as top of the pack. With smart phones and tablets being used more and more by everyday individuals to access the internet, research products and services, and make purchase, it simply doesn’t make sense not to make sure your site is optimized for mobile devices.

Increased value for links within context. Search engines are smart, and over the past year changes to algorithims has meant that in-context links (links that are relevant to the content they’re placed within) out-value those links whose surrounding content has nothing to do with them. This means when planning your marketing strategies, you’ll definitely want to focus on relevant content to support your links and thus give you the maximum benefit for their placement.

Website speed. Speed of service has always counted for a lot, so it’s no surprise that Google uses a website’s speed as partial consideration for that website’s overall ranking. Focus on optimization and content delivered as speedily as possible when planning out your website’s desgn.

Social media optimization is just as important as social engine optimization. With social media becoming so mainstream, and so many companies adopting it for many different reasons, it makes sense to rank SMO as valuable as SEO.

Increased emphasis on local searches. Google and other search engines have demonstrated that local searches will be highlighted and given more importance than regular searches. You’ll definitely want to integrate your website listing with Google Places for optimized local searches.

On-Page SEO activities. On-site optimization is more important than ever. Incoming links and guest articles and high search engine listings are important, but so is your website’s loading time, content and design, and content!

Acknowledgment of Bing and Yahoo’s presence. While Google is the clear winner in terms of search engines and SEO, both Bing and Yahoo are both still influencers in the search engine world, and should be taken into consideration when planning your SEO strategies.

Social media integration. Social media is all around, and your website simply won’t succeed without integration in it.

It’s also the place to go to if you want to partner with YouTube and make a possible career out of videos. Currently, the number of YouTube partners making over $1,000 each month has gone up by an amazing 300 percent since early 2010. YouTube even has hundreds of partners who are bringing in a six figure income each year!

So, how can you make money with YouTube? Well, you can follow the lead of many of YouTube’s traditional partners and use revenue generated via the videos you upload to make money.

You can also make money via product placements. Lancome, for instance, put together a video that teaches interested viewers how to create a makeup look similar to that of Lady Gaga in the “Poker Face” music video (you can view that video here).

Or, you can simply pay for promoted placement of your own videos, and get a significant return on them that’ll make the investment well worth it.

It was just a matter of when. Well, Facebook has answered the when, according to Marketing Land. As of early next year (note that “next year” is just several days away!), Facebook will be implementing and testing sponsored content within users’ streams. These ads will look and function very similar to the ads displayed via Facebook Sponsored Stories, meaning that a user must comment, like, or take some other type of action on a post in order for an ad to show up.

Facebook is assuring everyone that Sponsored Stories will only show up for you and the people you are connected to, and advertisers will not have the freedom to blast ads all over the Facebook community. More importantly, Facebook users will never see posts or ads from people they’re not connected to, or pages they’re not a fan of. What’s more reassuring is that Sponsored Stories will not appear more than once every 24 hours to users.

Here’s more of what Facebook had to say about Sponsored Stories:

Starting early next year (2012), Facebook will gradually begin showing Sponsored Stories in News Feed. The goal is to do this thoughtfully and slowly. Facebook hopes to show people no more than one Sponsored Story in their News Feeds per day and the story will be clearly labeled.
It will be a gradual rollout, so there is no specific completion date at this time. We’re committed to making sure that people’s experience in News Feed is optimal and we intend to roll this out slowly to ensure this.

Well it’s google and we almost feel like we have to… But is it worth it for the clients?

My clients are constantly asking, “Will this help me? Do I need to be on here?” my first inclination is to respond with, “It’s google, you almost feel like u have to”, but as of right now I don’t see a use for business to consumers on google pages.

I see why you would want to add a local page, then shake hands with google places, as this will enhance your local optimization. But what about for a non-places client, that is just a brand, community?

Right now google is on spam look out and they don’t have much in search results past 2007. So if you make a Google Plus Page to get a “presence” what’s to say google’s eyes won’t say it’s over-saturation and dink you for it.

If you have an amazing following already on twitter/Facebook and your Mark Zuckerberg or Lady Gaga, it’s given that you already know you’ll have a positive hit on google plus. But if you have a local individual, or a popular, but “normal” everyday business that actually has a good following on Facebook and then you try and move them to G+ aren’t u confusing the consumer? Plus adding additional staff to keep it fresh for real-time indexing, isn’t an option for everyone, and trying to manage yet another unique content post yourself is about enough to drive anyone insane. Plus, what happens if you have a facebook page, and a G+ page, and you’re adding news to both, and then you announce the same thing, are you going to get duped for duplicate content? I could go on…

Google if you want to tap into social circle your doing a great job for news and photographers but Google, please tell us what you want? If you want us to stop using FB and use G+, then buy Facebook! You acquire a few companies a month, why not add this to your list? Or better yet, let FB be FB, and you be search. Reminds me of last year when Bing started the commercials.

Sorry for my rant, but Google please tell us what’s in it for my medium to smaller size companies. In the meantime, to answer the questions I keep getting, “do I need to be on Google Plus? Open a profile page?” Beware once u go that your email address associated with your profile will expose you and all your glory hehehe
Just know its nice, it’s fun, it’s clean but all your personal buddies are not there, unless you’re in news, photography or a celeb stocker ,)

The actual amount of money spent on Cyber Monday? A very staggering $733 billion dollars. On average, the amount of shoppers and the amount of money they spent on Cyber Monday jumped by 84 percent when compared to daily sales during the previous four weeks.

Cyber Monday, as you’re probably well aware, is the internet’s variation of Black Friday. While the majority of Black Friday shopping is done in stores (though some online retailers take advantage of the frenzy of shoppers by offering special online Black Friday deals), all of Cyber Monday’s shopping is done online – hence the name. Typically, Cyber Monday is the first important day for the online shopping season, the yearly kick-off to online shopping for the holidays.

CNET also chimed in, citing 26% as the official rise in shopping on Black Friday 2011.

While no one is comfortable in saying that all is well with the U.S. economy, the fact that online sales are increasing after several years of plummeting and then plateauing is one that online merchants will want to keep in mind when planning promotions, sales, and advertising campaigns.

Why are online sales increasing, and how can you ride the wave? Simple: shopping online is convenient, and from a merchant’s standpoint, operating a website can be much more cost-effective and efficient than operating a brick and mortar store. Do away with a lot of the costs associated with running a physical store and staffing it with trained employees, and focus instead on an optimized website that is always on the leading edge in terms of marketing and search engine optimization.

Not many of us. And who doesn’t love the latest scoop on Justin Bieber? Even less, apparently, because according to Bing Trends, Justin Bieber is the #1 celebrity to be searched for this year. What is it about the Beebs that has so many of us loving — and hating — him? Well, it could be his start and continued connections with Usher. Or maybe it’s his age. Or maybe it’s just his soulful, crooning lyrics that have us hooked. In any case, our hats go off to Justin Bieber for being the top celebrity to be searched for on Google and other search engines for the year 2011.

Open PSD in Photoshop and save it as a PDF

Open PDF in Adobe Reader

Select Files -> Properties -> Fonts
