Recently I found a rather cool workaround for the most popular posts widget. It started out, that i noticed my widget i was using from a very popular blogspot blogger was no longer working. I googled and looked about for other variations or widgets to show the most popular posts and was not having a lot of luck. It seems that most widgets and code that is floating about indeed, no longer works. Well i came across a working widget that you can customize and will be easily applied to your blogspot blog in a few minutes.

Bloggergeeze put together a very detailed instruction on how you can add this widget to your blog. I am very thankful that i came across his workaround for a similar widget i was using that is no longer working. Now it works again! thank you.

Notice Your Recent Comments No longer Work?

If you are like me, you may have noticed that various recent comments widgets no longer seem to work. You may have also realized that a widget you used not so long ago may also not be working. Well you are here and you are in luck! Recently i realized that many of my widgets in my footer were not working properly so i had the fun of hunting on the net looking for a fix to make them work once again.

I came across this workaround on BloggerGeeze.Thanks to this blogger my widget is working once again.

For those who are using WidgetBucks to monetize their website or blog, you will be glad to know that there have been a handful of changes as of late. Display Blogger Widget Only On Home Page

Display Blogger Widgets On Home Page Only

Normally , widgets in Blogger blogs are displayed on all the pages. For example, look at the google translate widget on my right side bar. That widget is displayed on each and every page of my blog. But what if you want to display the Blogger widget only on the home page? Well that is possible. You have to edit your Blogger template with the following code.

Go into your dashboard and download your template just in case you make mistakes so you can backup your blogger blog. Then expand the html and make the appropriate changes to your html.

Here for example is HTML2 the widget id for "Get posts by Email". There may be different ids for different widgets as this is only an example of what could be there. The code you will be adding to fix your widget only to the home page will look like <b:if cond='data:blog.url == data:blog.homepageUrl'>

Open your Blogger templates Layout and then Edit HTML, Click on expand widget templates .
With Ctrl+F search for each widget with its ids or given label/name.
Now paste the code in blue as specified above and save your template. The edited Blogger widget will now only appear on the homepage .

How to display the widget on every page except home page?

You can display a Blogger widget on all of your pages except the home page, by altering the above code in blue with this new code.

You can also display a Blogger widget only on a specific post page only, by changing the first code with the following code .

Blogger Themes or Blogger Templates do not have to be the same boring 16 basic choices you get when you first open your account. You no longer need to switch to Wordpress to get that custom look, that pretty look or that awe inspiring professional page, or feel.

Last year I wrote an article titled Adsense Ready Blogger Templates Ready For Monetization?. A rather popular post that listed the many sites, designers and creators of many wonderful templates for Blogger. Blogspot blogs really do have a wide selection of themes to choose from.

Who makes money blogging?

A valid question that is often asked. Those bloggers that are making money will often tell you it is not easy to blog and make money, and it does take a long time before you start to see any form of money what so ever. But the fact remains, there are many bloggers making a living and making extreme amounts of money, from Blogging!

Many of these A list bloggers started off, as a hobby or part time. And some, quickly learned how to put everything together to create some pretty amazing sites. But the main theme to all these success stories is, they are doing something that they love.
It is something that they can actually earn money from while affording them the ability to set their own hours, as well as work on their own terms. Quite the nice job eh?

If blogging is something you are interested I, why not give it a go. But don't start off thinking you will be the next "A list" blogger, just enjoy the whole blogging aspect, put in the work and who knows maybe you will find that right formula for success too. Making Money With Your Site?

I've written many different posts on how one can make money using their website or blog. Much of which could fall under a few "topics" of interest.

Some of these topics covered your Affiliate Marketing type programs, Some covered your monetization methods based solely on "in context" type ads/links being displayed on ones site. As well, some covered how people make their money by writing, you know the "paid to post" types. (And now paid to write in forums types) All of which are common sources of income for many if not most bloggers.

All of which do well in their own way and all of which can bring you great rewards if you master the secrets to each type of money making site.

I was browsing through technorati and realized that Blog Me The Money was on a top blog power list, for the make money online niche of blogs (Link to this top blog list). I did not even know about this power list until I found a link on technorati. What is a power list? Well I wrote a post highlighting some top power lists that are well known amongst bloggers not too long ago which explains in great detail the benefits of these types of lists as well as a brief review of the various lists and how to get your blog listed on them. Many niches are covered within those power lists.

Unfortunately my page rank and Alexa rank have slid the last few months and Blog Me The Money has fallen off this new top blog power list in question, for these make money online blogs. I am sure most of you know most of the names on this list. Perhaps in the near future this blog will climb back aboard the list and rank among those who rank on it already.

And speaking of top blog power lists. Over at the 45n5 power list for making money online blogging, my rank has greatly improved since the last time I spoke about it. At that time I was sitting towards the bottom of the list hovering next to the bottom actually. Now I rank in around 285 out of close to 400 blogs. Quite the drop from where I sat in the summer, but a much improved ranking compared to last time I spoke of this power list for the make money online niche of blogs.

Anyhow I just wanted to let people out there know of yet 1 more top power list that is out there for bloggers to get listed on. Perhaps you will climb onto the ranks of the top money making blogs that reside on it?

3rd Party Popular Posts Widget

I wrote about a popular posts widget not too long ago. Unfortunately that widget disappeared and stopped working. So I then wrote an update to that post, the most popular posts widget update which unfortunately no longer works for most of the widgets I had included in that post. I have though found some other widgets that indeed do work to display your most popular posts, regardless of what blogging platform you do use.

Most Popular Posts Widgets

PostsRank - Is a relatively new widget that analyzes much of your blog and uses a complex algorithm or score to rank and order your blog posts in order of popularity based on the interaction with the post from your readers (Comments, social bookmarking, page views etc.). It is a widget that sits in your sidebar, and gives you the full ability to customize the look of, so that it meshes with your blogs theme and feel.

The above is how this popular widget could look in your blog. Each page within your blog is given a number or rank according to the algorithm and then ranked accordingly with the best ranked pages showing up in the widget window.

If you look at the bottom of the above picture, you will notice that this widget has an orange RSS icon in the lower right hand corner of the widget. This is also a button you can click on.

This button allows visitors to subscribe to your most popular posts as a feed, as is seen in the following picture. And includes the ability to filter topics.

PostRank on their website, claim that this widget can:

Increase your readership by increasing the value of your archives
Maxamize your revenue by engaging your readers to stay longer, view more pages and click on more links, leading to more opportunity to make money with advert impressions.
Older content within your blog stays visible and relevant alongside your newer, fresher posts.

This widget for ranking your blog posts in order of popularity seems to be yet another way one can go about it, and it is quite easy to install on most blog platforms. If you have not tested this widget out, perhaps now might be a good time?

Another Possible Popular Posts Widget

Another Widget candidate for popular posts is the Feedjit widget.
This widget I am sure you have seen on many other blogs or perhaps you have seen their location widgets. It ranks all your blog posts according to the traffic they have received on that specific day or 24 hour period. The pages are then broken down into a percentage based score with the page receiving the highest percentage of views coming in first. And then so on down the list. This widget shows your posts and their popularity only for the last 24 hours. So it is constantly updating and changing.

How To Show HTML Code In Blogger Post

Many people who have come across some of my posts have asked me the question of "how do you show your html or code in your blogger posts without the browser rendering that code?"

As many of you know, who use blogger that if you try and put the code as it is straight into your post, it likely will not show up (Especially javascript) or the browser will read the code and execute it, instead of displaying the code itself.

So what I do is, I "escape" the html code. Some examples of where I did this is the article Google Translate Widget as well as the article on Blogger Title Tags

Web browsers carry out a function from your html code when they read it but if you use character entities, the browser will display the symbol istead and not run the function that character was designed for. This is what I mean by escaping.

Character entities are made up of three parts:

1. An "ampersand" (the & symbol)
2. Either a descriptive phrase, or a # followed by a number
3. A semicolon (the ; symbol)

You need to display your code in such a way where you find all the "<" and ">" """ symbols and exchange them for their Entity name. This is quite the chore and can be done in notepad etc.

For example "<" would end up being "&" followed by "lt;".
A quick and easy way is to go to Blogcrowds and enter your code in the box and hit the button to parse it into the escaped code for you which takes all of a few seconds and your html code will now be ready to show in your blogger post. Your new "code" will now be ready to place in a scroll box or blockquote or textarea within your blogger post. For my two articles I used textarea, although you can use blockquotes or iframes or scrollboxes. Just remember to escape the code or html you want to be displayed in your post, first.

I should also note, that if your editor in blogger keeps adding extra line breaks you may want to try this trick. Goto http://draft.blogger.com instead, then in your editor click on post options and tick the bottom radio button to select the option of not automatically adding line breaks for that post.

Title Tags in Blogger?

For the longest time I wondered why some posts did well in search engine rankings, while others did not. Of course I just carried on my way and continued plugging away at those keywords, title tags in links, alt tags in pictures etc. and all the other things one does when putting out pages. Well one day I was examining the code, as well as the browser bar, and noticed that my blog title was always the title in the browser regardless of what article I was on. So I looked up the source code and noticed it was the same regardless of page (The "Title" tag). And as we all know that is not always the best way to get a good ranking in a search engine.

Search engines tend to like that Title Tag, especially if it is relevant to your material (Which I assume it is), relevant to and contains your keywords, and preferably sits in your url as well. But that is a completely different post!

For this post, I wanted to show that it is indeed possible for a blogger, using the blogger platform (blogspot) to change how a title looks, and to help better your rankings in the search engines with these tags.

Why Change Blogger Title Tags?

Well for starters it will increase your rankings, which will ultimately increase the number of visitors to your blogger blog. Which is what everyone wants. With the increased visitors, your blogger blog just may make you more money if that is your goal. If not, your readership base should grow which I am sure everyone desires.

How Do I Change Blogger Title Tags?

Well there are 2 ways to make this change, and both are quite simple.

1- You could have the posts title appear first, followed by the blog's title. (a double title) You can see what I mean in your browser toolbar. Like this Example (Just open it in a browser): pikasso guitars
The page title should have appeared after the blog's title.

2- The second option is the single post title. Again if you open your browser, a title of the blog will not appear in the toolbar, only the post title itself will appear. For Example, Adsense Ready Themes For Wordpress.

Honestly, I don't know which is the better choice, be it showing the title of the post and then the blog title, or just showing the title of the post. Myself, I went with showing just the title of the post and left the blog title only for the main page. But one thing is for certain, both choices, have to be better than showing your blog title for each and every page you write.

Now with that said, let's make the changes!

Add a Google Translate widget to your blog or website. This widget is powered by Google Translate, and gives your visitors the ability to view your pages translated in their own native languages with just a click. I wrote about the importance of such a widget in an earlier post, called Translate Your Websites Or Blog For Money. This post will assume you want this function or ability for your own site or blog and will give you the code to make it possible. Just find the style you wish to apply and then highlight and copy the code below the image for that style. Further instructions will follow the codes on how to install the code. This code should work for Blogger (Blogspot), Joomla, Wordpress, Drupal, and pretty much any other application, including its use in standard HTML static webpages.

How to add the Google Translate Widget to your blog or website:
Blogger (Blogspot)
1. Go to your Dashboard > Layout > Add a Page Element > HTML/JavaScript 2. Paste the code into the new element box 3. Add a title. (Ex: Translate, Translate this page, Google Translate ) *This is optional* 4. Save (or Save Changes). 5. Move the new element to the desired spot by drgging it with your mouse and again save.
Wordpress
1. Login to your Admin panel > Presentation tab > Widgets tab 2. Paste the code into the Text Widget. If there’s no Text Widget available, add one. 3. Add a title. (Ex: Translate, Translate this page, Google Translate) *This Is Optional* 4. Save.
Joomla site (CMS)
1. Login to your Admin panel > Modules - Site Modules > click New 2. Paste the code into the Custom Output content box 3. Adjust module details and menu item links if necessary 4. Click Apply or Save.
Drupal Site
unfortunately I have not used Drupal but I assume it is similar to Joomla.
Static Webpage
1. Open the page you wish the widget to show on in your editing software (Dreamweaver, MS, Amya, NVU, Notepad etc.) 2. Paste the code where you desire it to be (depending on software you may or may not have to play with the styling sheets or not to perfect the location) 3. Save the .html or .htm file

It should be noted that Google Translate is still in its beta phase. Some translations will return somewhat odd or funny at times as this service is not perfected but it is often translated quite well and your visitors will get the idea of what you were writing. Which is much better than being at a complete loss. If you are blogging or running a website with the goal to make money online, I suggest reading the article I just linked to in this sentence on why you should translate your site or blog.

Linkworth Allows for NoFollow Links

Many publishers who use paid posting and link selling as a means to make money, know that their webpages tend to get bad page rank because this is frowned upon by Google. Simply put, most programs that offer this service to publishers do not allow for the nofollow tag to be used.

External link ad selling service LinkWorth on the other hand, allows publishers to choose the “nofollow” option for their links if they desire to.

You can do that by going to My Sites » Manage Sites » Edit Site and choosing “I will use rel=”nofollow” tag for all my links” under Additional Website Settings section.

What does this mean to publishers? Well, It means that, those publishers who have stopped using LinkWorth in the past or those who have stopped using other services for the same reason, for “nofollow” reasons, can now start selling text links again.

As we all know, Google punishes, and is still punishing, tons of blogs and websites for selling text links. So, if Page Rank is indeed important to you, and if you desire to have a Google friendly blog or site, yet you still enjoy using third party text-link ad selling services, then LinkWorth is the answer for you and your text-link selling (Or paid posting).

Advantage of using “nofollow”

Your blog or website stays Google friendly
You will keep your Page Rank (Google won’t decrease your PR)
Your blog or website will not be banned from Google’s search index
If you had stopped using LinkWorth for “nofollow” reasons, now you can use it back (opportunity to make extra money).

Disadvantage of using “nofollow”

As for myself I like the fact that you can chose nofollow and I do use Linkworth for my blogs, and have sold quite a few links using their service. I have found that many highly niche focused blogs and sites have done well selling their links. Some of mine have as I mentioned in this LinkWorth post.

Having written about Net Audio Ads on several occasions, most recently in an article on alternatives to Adsense, I thought perhaps it may be time to go into more depth on this money making program. A program that has shown great promise and has helped to increase my bottom line as far as making money online goes.

Net Audio Ads is different from all the other money making programs I have showcased.
It is quite simple to sign up for and once the small code is inserted into your website, qualified visitors to a publishers site are then served up 5-15 second Audio Clips. No click throughs or other requirements need to be met. Think of radio advertisements and you have an idea of Net Audio Adverts. Adverts are sent through the network to qualified visitors on publishers sites based on locale, time of day and possibly other factors the advertiser purchased. But if a visitor is qualified, then an audio clip is played and the publisher is guaranteed pay for that play.

This program is no longer in Beta and is now functional and a great opportunity for publishers. Hide Or Remove The Blogger Nav Bar

In Blogger blogs there is a nav bar or navigation bar that sits up top of every Blogspot blog. This nav bar allows a visitor to flip back and forth from blog to blog or allows a user to search the blog they are reading. This navigation bar also acts as a login tool for blog owners. But sometimes you just want to remove this nav bar altogether and want to hide it. Well you are in luck, it is quite easy to do and only takes a minute of your time.

How To Hide The Blogger Nav Bar

Go into your Blogger account and click on the Layout tab. You will want to Edit HTML, but first you want to backup your blog template and download the backup just in case. This is always good practice before making changes to your Blogspot templates.

Now what you want to do is use CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) techniques to hide the nav bar. (You really aren't "removing" it, just hiding it)

Next thing you want to do is find this line in the template: </b:skin>

Above this line you should find a long list of CSS commands, they all start with the number sign. (Your styling sheet) You will want to place the CSS script to hide the navigation bar there with the rest. The code to add is:

#navbar-iframe {
height:0px;
visibility:hidden;
display:none
}

Once that is done, you can preview your blog minus the navigation bar and you can save the final copy, thus hiding the bar from your blog.

I should warn though, that hiding the navigation bar will remove your search bar as well and if that is a feature you wish to have, then you will have to install a new one somewhere within your template. Thanks to 20stickyposts for this hack.
