Working from Home and Managing Your Time

Managing your time is always an important skill to have but, when you work from home, this becomes even more crucial while also being more difficult to accomplish. Some of the very reasons that working from home is attractive are the very things that can make it harder to maintain productivity and focus. Many people like the idea of running a home-based business because they like the flexibility in scheduling, not having to report to a boss and because they want to spend more time with their children. While these are great benefits, without proper time management those benefits can become hindrances.

Working from home often gives you tremendous flexibility when it comes to scheduling your work hours. You can easily adjust your hours around appointments or the children's school activities. You also have the opportunity to work when you are naturally the most productive such as early morning or late nights. The key thing to remember is that a schedule is still important to maintain even while remaining flexible. It's far too easy to get off track and miss deadlines if you don't set aside specific blocks of time to work on your business.

Time management means more than just setting aside a certain amount of time to work. It also includes knowing what tasks need to be done, how to prioritize those tasks and having specific goals with what you are trying to accomplish. You can schedule yourself to work for a four hour block of time but if you spend the first hour figuring out what you need to do, you've just cut your productivity by 25%. You need to start with an overall plan that includes very specific, detailed goals including time frames to keep you on the fast track towards success.

In order to set your detailed goals, you first need to evaluate where you are at right now and outline where you would like your business to go. When you plan your tasks, each one should be a step along that path. For example, say you want to be at a certain point within 30 days from now. You would write down each task that will get you from where you are now to where you want to be at the end of that month. Those tasks are going to be what you focus on during your work hours. When listing these tasks, make sure you also write down how much time each one will take on average. This list will help you plan what you do during the time you have scheduled each day.

If you develop good time management skills, you can avoid the extremes that many new home business owners end up doing. There are two common scenarios that we see all the time. The first is the person who hasn't scheduled her time or written any goals. She works very hard all day but gets sidetracked with distractions and at the end of the day realizes that very little actual work was accomplished. The other scenario that can be just as destructive to the home business is the person who works 90 hours a week, from early in the morning until late at night. They may accomplish more of their goals but it makes for a high burnout rate, not to mention a very unhappy family.

These companies are struggling to survive, though, thanks to the rise of, and near ubiquitous access to, the Internet. No longer do the large publishing companies decide what makes it into widespread syndication. Now, anybody with access to a personal computer at home, work, school, or the library can document their thoughts and feelings, and make them available to the world at large.

There are a few major points to consider when the “blog bug” bites. First, will the blog be used as a diary, a place to write down and keep track of the ups and downs of daily life, or will it be used to post updates and news for a chosen topic? Anytime someone asks me where they should begin on the Internet, I always tell them to start with Blogger. Blogger is easy to use and you can always find help by clicking on the help button at the top right of the page.

When someone is new to the online world and you are trying to explain to them what it is you do to earn a living, they have no clue as to what you are talking about. Or, someone who has an offline business and they want to start marketing their business online but have no clue where to begin, I send them here. After all, Blogger Rules!

In the search engines you will find many blogs that were created here so, if you want your business found, start blogging!

There are quite a few templates to choose from so I'm sure you will find something that you like. And you can change templates if you decide you don't like the one you chose. They added some more recently and they are really quite nice.

I also want to mention that if you do create a blog, you should sign up with Google Adsense and Amazon. Not only can you earn money from them, it also adds content to your site.

Raisin-My Canine Nephew

Sorry that I haven't posted, I have been really sick with bronchitis and a sinus infection. I am feeling better now, thank God!

I did manage to make it to my "canine" nephew, Raisin's 11th birthday. It was the best entertainment that I have had in a long time.

To the left is Raisin with his "mom", my sisiter-in-law, and his birthday cake. This cake is made from all wholesome ingredients. I will be posting the recipe for this on my other blog, Food! Food! Food!.

While Raisin was outside, my sister-in-law placed his gifts in the family room. The rest of us seated ourselves and waited for Raisin to be let in. I just had to laugh. Raisin knew exactly what was

happening. As soon as the door was opened, he darted for the family room and immediately started tearing into his gifts. As soon as he had one opened to where you could see what it was, he would go for another. I have never seen anything like it. He is so smart and soooo cute.

To the right is Raisin going after another gift. The hanky around his neck says, "It's my birthday." He is just adorable.

Raisin received enough treats to last him for six

months and he loves stuffed animals. He will actually suck on them like a pacifier. To the left is Raisin "tearin it up". He is such a good Boston Terrior. My sister-in-law sure can train a dog!

When it was time for the cake my sister-in-law cut a piece into bite sized pieces and Raisin devoured it. He really likes that cake. It was a lot of fun watching him enjoy his birthday. I was glad that I was able to be a part of it.

I have been using Blogger for about a year now. When I first heard of this site I didn't even know what blogging was. It didn't take me long to learn but, it did take me almost all this time to actually blog. It sure does put your brain to work trying to decide what to write about I'll tell you that! Blogging has become so popular that businesses are even doing it. Almost every website that I go to has a blog. This is a wonderful way for them to keep their customers informed about new products, promotions or anything that may be relevent. I also think that blogging makes it more personal for the consumer. It gives you that "they care" feeling. If you are on a website and you have a question that you can't seem to find an answer to, check out their blog (if they have one), you just might find your answer there. It has happened to me. Blogger still rules!

It's been months now since I first created this blog, or mini site is what I like to call it. I still can't find a better site for blogging than this. I must say that Blogger still rules. They have done some updates in the past months, also. They have added a Monetize button for Adsense which makes adding it even easier. More gadgets have been added also. Oh, you can now add a following button on your blog and people can sign up to follow you. Pretty cool, huh? Again I say it, Blogger Rules!
