Based in the Czechoslovak Communist in 1968 all the way through to 1984 the books follows
a few characters through their lives and touches strongly on the subjects of live and it’s relevance. If a life is only lived once then what meaning does it have, thus the weight of life can only have significance if lives and incidences are to reoccur over time….. It’s pretty darn deep stuff. Oh and of course there is the all important story of the dog…. This is probably the most touching part of the book as it brings a brilliant simplicity and complexity into the life and everyday being of the pet dog and the troubles it faces…. Pure brilliance.

I’m well overdue for another reading of The Unbearable Lightness of Being and I can do nothing but recommend that each and every one of you read this classic. I’d also love to hear you thoughts on the book and it’s happens.

Of the many animals in cities all around the world there are a few common faces that stretch almost the entire globe and can often be found either blatantly running around or hiding in the shadows living of our waste and over consumption.

First up the champion if animals in the city is the mighty pigeon. I have yet to go to a city anywhere in the world and not see a pigeon. If you know of a city that does not have any, then I would love to know. Generally they seem to be wood pigeon styled Pigeons but I am currently here in Cairo, Egypt and I am seeing small brown doves and beautiful black and white pigeons on the city outskirts.

Next you often find Dogs and Cats, i’ll put these together as we all know about them. Many are animals that have been turfed out onto the street to fend for themselves but in many cities they have been living wild for many many generations and are semi-wild but still co-existing with humans in a very functional way. They eat our trash and cozy up to us and even get along with the domestic animals…. I have made good friends with many street animals that seem quite content living on the streets.

Then we have many many night dwellers. These include beautiful foxes, badgers, hedgehogs, porcupines, rats, mice, thousands of insects, bats and many many more.

Please let us know your favorite of the many animals in the city and if you have any comments. I don’t see city animals as pest as we have stolen their natural habitats so they are making do with what we have replaced them with.

Here is a little more info about the reproduction of Giraffes:

The mighty giraffe has a very long gestation period of between 400 – 460 days and after all this effort just one baby calf is born. It is possible for twin calfs but it’s pretty rare. She gives birth to her babies standing up and the embryonic sack will burst open with the calf falling to the ground.

A baby calf is about 6ft tall!! Huge!!!

They also develop really really fast and can normally run around within a few hours bearing no difference to a calf that is a week old. For the first few weeks they lay down most of the time and can be vunerable to various hunting animals and sadly only 25-50% of calf’s make it into adulthood.

The Albino gene is passed down through generations and can be recessive. Sadly Albino dogs are often very much more likely to have bad health.
