RSS Scraping

RSS scraping is where a website owner takes an RSS feed and places it on their website without attribution or a link back to the original author. Some people feel any RSS placed on a website is scraping.

RSS Feed Scraping Tools

Here are 3 tools you can use, depending on the circumstances, to scrape an RSS feed from a page that doesn’t publish one

FeedFire

FeedFire was the first of these tools I discovered several years ago and I still use it on occaision today. You enter a web page URL and it delivers any new link-text appearing there over time in the form of an RSS feed.

There’s not a whole lot you can do with it and it’s a little messy, but it’s really easy and very fast to use. If you’ve got a simple page with headline links, say a company’s old-fashioned “news” page with links to PDF press releases for SEO or something – FeedFire is perfect. You’ll get every link on the page in your feed, but once you mark the extra links (like to the home page) as read you’ll forget it ever happened. Still, I’d keep this for personal use only if possible. It’s quick and dirty.

FeedYes

I used FeedYes in assembling an OPML file for a client recently and it worked great. It’s a joy to use, in fact. Like FeedFire, FeedYes picks all the links out of a page – but then it asks you to click on the first one on the list that’s useful and on the last one. In this way it determines which link fields on a page to track, instead of tracking them all. Very nice. It’s a touch harder to use, but not really.

Feed43

This is what I used for that and so far it looks like it worked great.

Feed43 is awesome. It displays the source code for any page you tell it to look at, then lets you identify any part of that code as the begining and end of an RSS item. For example, if you want to scrape and there are no links but author’s name is in bold. I told Feed43 that items for a feed start when the bold tag closes and end when the next open bold tag appears. That worked great. The other fields are a touch confusing, but I got them figured out. The help pop-ups are only marginally useful. Once you get it down, though, Feed43 is no problem.

The advanced features are great. You can export all your feeds in OPML and you can password protect your feeds.

MyYahoo has many different advantages including speed, reliability, ease-of-use, the ability to preview articles, and the MyYahoo Reader. And these are in addition to the ability to separate the feeds into different categories and place them on their own tab within the personalized page.

Speed A big reason to use MyYahoo over other online readers is speed. MyYahoo is one of the fastest readers when it comes to loading in the articles of multiple RSS feeds.

Reliability Even the best websites will go down or become slow from time to time, but generally speaking, a website like Yahoo or Google will go down far less than a more specialized and less popular site.

Ease-of-use Adding an RSS feed to MyYahoo is a simple matter of choosing "Personalize this page", clicking on "Add RSS Feed", and typing in (or pasting) the feed's address. Limitations of the personalized start page One big negative to MyYahoo is that tabs beyond the first tab only have two columns, and one of these columns has a huge advertisement taking away a lot of space that could otherwise be put to good use. If you put feeds beyond that first tab, you are probably going to be reading most of them from a single column.

It is important to know that a pages voting power is only .85 of that pages actual PR and this voting power gets spread out evenly between all sites it links to.

Imagine http://www.blackitsoft.com was linked by http://blog.blackitsoft.com link page which had a PR of 4 and 9 other links, here's how the formula should look like:

PR(BLA) = (1-.85) + .85*(4/10)

PR(BLA) = .15 + .85*(.4)

PR(BLA) = .15 + .34

PR(BLA) = .49

To sum up my site would get an injection of .49 PR after being linked from a page with a PR of four and 9 other links.

Let's say I was linked from a site with a PR of 8, double the previous example's amount, which had 15 other links, a total of 16 outbound links, my boost would be:

PR(BLA) = (1-.85) +.85*(8/16)

PR(BLA) = .15 + .85(.5)

PR(BLA) = .15 + .425

PR(BLA) = .575

The above two worked examples show that not only is the PR of the linking page important but what is also important is how many other sites are also linked to from that page.

I think we've had enough maths stuff for now, just remember that the name of the game is to get as many links from pages with high PR and few other links. The more of these links you get the more your PR will grow and the more your rankings will improve for your relevant keywords.

To rank your site, Google closely looks at the number of inbound links pointing to your site, the quality of the sites that have the inbound links, the anchored text links associated with each link and finally any traces of human interference to “artificially” increase a site’s link popularity (which will negatively affect your rankings).

But when you don’t follow through on your promises, you’re setting yourself up for bigger problems down the road.

It’s a problem that I’ve tried to get rid of at my working place. We try to make it very clear what we expect from our employees and what we think success looks like. But it’s hard to ask for accountability if you’re not accountable yourself.

We’re a Web 2.0 business development, software development and Web 2.0 Development firm that optimize client business through Software application (minimizing overheads), SEO (Search Engine Optimization), social media campaigns, business partner and conversion optimization — converting a visitor to a customer. We earned more than $ 75000 in revenue in 2009 and are on track to exceed $ 150000 in 2010. Deadlines are crucial for any business development and marketing campaign, and we are often under the gun to get things done within a set time frame for our clients.

There are times when I’ve let my own accountability slide, too. One of my personal goals is to stop underestimating the time it will take to hold a meeting or have a phone call. I used to fill up my schedule based on a perfect-world scenario — no traffic or red lights when driving to a client meeting, no tangents or issues to iron out when talking on the phone. My schedule looked good on paper, and yet the only meeting of the day that I ever made it to on time was the first meeting of the day.

It got so bad that it became an joke for business development: If you had a 2:30 meeting with me, you didn’t have to show up until 3:00, because I wouldn’t get there until 3:10 or 3:15. I had slipped into a habit that I disliked in other people, and so I worked to change it. Now, I take a second to consider the reality of my schedule. I work in extra time in between meetings and calls. For instance, I always take 20 minutes to catch up on email after lunch, so that’s now part of my schedule.

I’m much better at being on time these days — which probably also has something to do with hiring an incredible executive assistant who helps keep me on track.

Don’t aim for what you can’t hit

Back in college, a friend of mine told three different fraternities that he was definitely going to join. He couldn’t join all three. I knew that. He knew that. But he told them he’d do it anyway. He over-committed himself because he was making three people happy today, even though two of them were inevitably going to be baffled and frustrated tomorrow, after they found out he had lied to them.

I see the same impulse at work when I ask staff members to do high-priority projects. I’ve had people tell me they can get something done by the end of the day, only to take until the next day to finish. While they might have thought I’d be happy with their initiative, I’m a lot happier when they meet their deadline since that lets me plan based on realistic timelines.

Defining roles boosts accountability

Hitting deadlines and sticking to schedules aren't the only forms of accountability I’m concerned with. Defining employees’ roles is equally important.

About five years ago, my company grew from seven employees to 167. When we started, we have bothered to set clear goals — we all just knew we’d work as hard as possible and get as far we could in a given month. When we added the new people, however, it quickly became clear that we needed to define individual roles and responsibilities for everyone. Without them, there was a lack of accountability as well as a poor alignment of individual skills and roles — for example, a staff member who wasn't a confident salesperson was receiving sales calls as part of his job. That was unfair to both the employee and the customers, and it lowered both productivity and morale.

We work to define the goals collaboratively with the individuals involved, their teams and those who are touched by their work — this way you can get all sides to “buy in” to what success looks like. We also publicize these goals, tasks and metrics so the rest of the company knows what each person is bringing to the table and what they are working on. When things go well, everyone knows who should receive the praise.

By clearly laying out those goals, we try to avoid the scenario in which someone doesn’t know whether or not she or he did a good job because it wasn’t clearly laid out for her or his. It’s a very scary position to be in as an employer if there’s a gap between how you define success and how your employee defines it. How can employees hold themselves accountable if they don’t know what’s expected of them?

Many of us have seen fluctuation in search engine result page (SERP) or site’s ranking on Google Search Results (SR’S) fluctuate and you know why? Recently, one of our client has asked me the same question and I thought it would be beneficial to post an answer for everyone.

I have personally seen Google search results fluctuations since I started my SEO career from 2006 to till date. For one thing, if it wasn’t for Google changing the search results pages, none of our clients would have had top of Google rankings, right?

But what I mean here is gaining and losing first page or top 3 positions in cycles. Normally, this doesn’t happen for very competitive keywords; as explained by matt cutts. As top players always have SEO Experts on their sides, but for less competitive keywords, this is a common phenomenon.

Here are some common reasons for Fluctuation in search engine result that you see on Google:

Posting fresh content: Google values fresh content on sites. Adding a new story to your blog, posting a new article on your site or simply rewriting your site’s homepage could trigger Google bots to move you up the scales a few notch. Same could go for your competitors. However, the improvements in rankings don’t last that often unless you keep on updating your site’s content.
Optimization Removal: if our SEO team has optimized your site and you have over-written the optimization work by uploading your old files to the server, you have caused your site’s rankings to be dropped. In this case, you can ask our team to re-upload the files.
Different Google bots: each Google bot (spider) uses a slightly different algorithm; so, theoretically, when different spiders visit your site, they would rank your site according to their algorithm.
Duplicate content: this is also more likely a theory as I have not seen the proof of it, but I was just reading Google Webmaster Help and someone had claimed if your site’s content is copied by someone else, it could fluctuate your rankings. However, what I’ve seen with duplicate content is that rankings will drop to 10+ pages of Google SR’s.

The Web 2.0 is very useful for passing information to and from various people all around the world. But if you are putting up information that you don't want the world to see, you need to do something more than just hide it in a secret directory. There are many ways that a search engine can find files that are hidden and unlinked. Such as:

Search engine spiders can fill out forms and spider the results pages. They can also read referral codes to see where someone has come from. This means, that if they visited your hidden page and then Google, Google can get that page into their index. Even if you don't link to the page, if someone else does, then eventually the Googlebot and other bot will find the link and spider the page. In the same way, even if you don't use a search engine add URL page, someone else might add your hidden page for you. Everything That is Not Actively Hidden Can be Found by a Search Engine in web 2.0 Era.

Everything that is stored on your website in public (non-password protected) directories is visible to a robot or search engine. At first blush, this might sound like a good thing. After all, isn't one of the goals of Web development to create pages and sites that are found and spidered by search engines? But you might be surprised at what search engines are now finding and including in their indexes.

Google and other search engines have tools that the Web for specific files and file types. And they don't just search the file names. Many of these file types are indexable, meaning the search engine can read the contents and index that as well. Even text in images is soon going to be indexable by search engines.

So if you have secret or private information in any of the following file types, you should not rely on Web 2.0 security through obscurity to protect them.

If you put up any files that you don't want to be found on the website, they should be in a password protected directory. If they aren't, they are visible - and search engines can and will spider it.

How You Can Protect Your Files Through Web 2.0 Obscurity?

There are several ways to protect your files:

Don't put them up on the site

This is the most secure method. If you don't want your files to be seen by people, avoid putting them on a website or even a computer with a Web server on it.

Put them in a password protected directory

Use a server level password, such as htaccess for the securest protection. Or you can use a JavaScript password, but this is not very secure.

Put up a robots.txt file

This will prevent "law-abiding" robots from spidering the specified pages, but doesn't prevent robots who don't follow those rules. In fact, it acts as a flag to some that those directories might contain sensitive documents and materials.

When building and maintaining a website, it's important to keep security in mind at all times. "Security through obscurity" or the idea that if a page isn't linked means people won't find it, is an incorrect theory. If you put up a document or file on a Web page, you should assume that someone will find and read it. If you don't want it found, think really carefully before you post it to your website.

It doesn’t matter how many times I read about Semantic Web on Wikipedia, I will still have trouble understanding its concept as clearly. My understanding is that it tries to put the web information into an extensible sort-of way so that it can be “understandable” by machines (when I say machines, I mean computer programs or future computer generated program) but at the same time can also be presented to human in a form that is described as “natural”. SEO Do's and Don'ts

Those who use or abuse any of the techniques from this list may find themselves out from search engine spiders.................... Here I present 10 Search engine optimization Do's and Don'ts.....

1. The high keyword density style (SEO Do's or Don'ts Depends)– which made it’s debut back in the 1990's and has been known to still exist in recessed areas of the web, safe from the top 10 and buried forever in dismal obscurity.

2. The anchor text at the bottom of the page (SEO Do's) – used to encourage spiders and deep links. Overdo it and it’s excessive over linking.

3. The high inbound link to one page (SEO Do's) - very popular for landing pages (one page 1000 links, that’s natural looking).

4. The Wikipedia attack (SEO Do's) – a behemoth with an appetite for embellishing on everyones content through a massive piggy back / content management / internal linking / I’ll take the credit and dominate the SERPs technique. Any keyword it consumes it becomes a ranking juggernaut for, and we are dumb enough to feed it. This tactic is also seen on scraper MFA (made for adsense) sites, posturing as the original post, with a unique spin on where the links are directed.

5. The old school reciprocal link cover letter and close (SEO Don'ts) - Reciprocal linking no... no... no... , if your link to me we will rule the web technique – only to have them remove the link one week later and sap your page rank (no thanks). This SEO style may as well join technique point 1 as defunct indefinitely.

6. The Social Profile Image Bait SEO (SEO Do's) – just add one stunning photograph, post and wait.

7. The Keyword Stuffing Pipes in the Title (SEO Don'ts) – Keyword Stuffing : Even more Keywords : Even more Ridiculous Stuffing : Company : Services : City : State : Birth Date : Address : Location of First Kiss with Girlfriend... bla.. bla.. bla.. etc. you get the point so stop it already.

8. The hidden .css 1px table with 55 keywords inside SEO technique (SEO Don'ts) - very famous in the UK, but known for trying to migrate to the US. Also known to travel in packs with the comment spam and Google bombing technique…so beware of this stupid techniques

9. The h1, h2, h3, h4, h5, h6, bold, italic SEO technique (SEO Do's) – enough said…use it don’t abuse it.

and last but not least

10. The submit your site to 5000 directories and 3,500 search engines SEO technique (SEO Do's) – you may as well just put a bulls eye on your website, and wear a T-shirt that says that Google, Yahoo & MSN are a bunch of sissy’s. Forget the top 10, let’s just see how long it takes before you find your site sand-boxed somewhere in the thousands…

I almost thought about throwing in the Pay your way to the top before you get banned Paid Link technique, but that’s just plain cold blooded, as the wounds are fresh for those who were a victim of the Google Bot Sweep and Reverse Punch to the Temple as they were ejected from the index and their high flying SERP (search engine result pages) ranking days grounded by the new and improved champion of the bots.

Since SEO Services styles make the fight, keep it clean since the bots are now armed with skills to detect, sweep and defeat such flimsy techniques from the past from common sight, or at least the search engine’s index.

Now I know I may have left a few techniques out, not that I’m not calling anyone out, but you know who you are if any of these ring true.

So, what’s your style? and how can it possible defend from a solid link building, on topic, authority site augmented, aged domain with social bookmark viral marketing technique? That’s what I thought, not a chance

Link bait SEO

Link-bait SEO as something interesting enough to catch people’s attention, and that doesn’t have to be a bad thing. There are a lot of ways to do that, including putting in sweat of the brow work to generate data or insights, or it can be as simple as being creative. You can also say something controversial to generate discussion especially in Search Engine Optimization.

The quantity and quality of inbound links are two of the many metrics used by a search engine ranking algorithm to rank a website. Link bait SEO falls under the task of link building, and aims to increase the quantity of high-quality, relevant links to a website by interesting information or fun, it doesn’t have to have negative connotations.

Types of link bait SEO

1. Informational hooks SEO - Provide information that a reader may find very useful. Some rare tips and tricks or any personal experience through which readers can benefit.

2. News hooks SEO - Provide fresh information and obtain citations and links as the news spreads.

3. Humor hooks SEO - Tell a funny story or a joke. A bizarre picture of your subject or mocking cartoons can also prove to be link bait.

4. Evil hooks SEO - Saying something unpopular or mean may also yield a lot of attention. Writing about something that is not appealing about a product or a popular blogger. Provide strong reasons for it.

5. Tool hooks SEO - Create some sort of tool that is useful enough that people link to it.

6. Widgets hooks SEO - A badge or tool, that can be placed or embedded on other websites, with a link included.

7. Unique content hooks SEO - This hook is intended for people that are in need of unique contents or articles for traffic or AdSense revenue. This became popular after Google implemented Duplicate Contents Filter and sites with duplicate contents saw fall in traffic. To use this hook, you have to create unique contents and give it out to Bloggers and webmasters with an obligation to put link back to your site.

Link-baiting SEO sounds like a bad thing, but especially if it’s interesting information or fun, it doesn’t have to have negative connotations. I hereby claim that content can be both white-hat and yet still be wonderful “bait” for links.
