Uploading Joomla to your web server

After having developend and tested your website on a local server, the next big challenge is uploading the website to your web server, and updating the configuration such that you "go live". The tutorial below gives you the steps required to move your Joomla website from your local computer to a server. With a few tweaks these steps also apply to moving Joomla from one host to another.

Upload all files to your web server

The first thing you need to do is transfer the files to the web server where your live site will be hosted. To be able to do this, you will need FTP (FTP is a way of allowing easy transfer of files across the web) access to your web server. FTP access typically consists of:

FTP Address - typically this is something similar to ftp.yourdomain.com
FTP Login details - username / password to access the ftp area

This information is given to you when you apply for a hosting account with any hosting company. To access the FTP area you will need an FTP client. A free and easy to use ftp client is FileZilla. Download and install this client and then enter the information to your ftp area. These should be similar to the image below:

Once you have connected to your webserver, upload all the files to the host. This is done by selecting all the Joomla files from your local hard drive and dragging them to the window which is connected to the host. This will start transfer of all your Joomla files to your hard disk.

Note: if you host has already installed Joomla for you, do not overwrite the configuration.php files. This contains very important details regarding the your Joomla host. You should keep a backup copy of this file. All other files can be overwritten, such that you have all the configuration you have done on the local installation.

Export / Import the Joomla database

Warning: the following steps about exporting / importing the joomla database are significantly technical. Please be aware of what you are doing because you may create a real mess.

The next step to tranfer the site you have created locally to the web server is the transfer of the Joomla database from your local MySQL, to the webserver database. This consists of two steps

Exporting your current local database
Importing the exported database to the MySQL database on the hosting company's server

Export the local Joomla database

To export your current database you need to use the phpMyAdmin located on your local server and export the database. The phpMyAdmin URL differs depending on the local development server you are using. If you are using XAMPP to test and develop you website, you will find phpMyAdmin at http://localhost/phpMyAdmin

Choose the database which contains the website you want to upload, and export it to a file. This step depends very much on the phpMyAdmin you are using. However, there should be an Export link. Export all the tables. Once the database has been export to a .sql file, you should open the file with a text editor, and check that the file looks ok. It should contain the Joomla tables. Make sure there isn't a Create database line. The database should be created manually.

Import to the hosting MySQL database

Once you have exported the database, you need to import on the host. Your hosting company should be able to provide you with access to MySQL. If you still haven't created a database you should create it now. Take note of all details, especially the address of the server where the MySQL resides, the name of the database, username and password to access the database. If the Joomla database has already been created previously (using the Joomla installation procedure or otherwise) you should use the details given to you when creating the database.

Log on to the phpMyAdmin interface, find the import tab, and import the file you have exported above. Once again, the location of the Import link varies depending on the phpMyAdmin version being used, however this should be fairly intuitive.

Configure

Up to now, if you try to access your website, you will probably be given an error. This is because the configuration.php file you had on your local server does not contain the information related to your hosting account details. As stated previously, if your host has already installed Joomla for you, you should leave the configuration.php file created unchanged. Otherwise you will need to change the following critical details:

Joomla 1.5

var $host = 'localhost'; - this is the address of the server which is hosting your MySQL database
var $user = 'sqluser'; - this is the name of the username which will be used to access the Joomla MySQL database
var $password = 'p@ssw0rd'; - password for MySQL database
var $db = 'j15stable'; - MySQL Joomla database name
var $log_path = '\home\logs'; - the path where any log files will be stored
var $tmp_path = '\home\tmp'; - the path for tmp files

Joomla 1.0

$mosConfig_host = 'mysql.youhost.com' - this is the address of the server which is hosting your MySQL database
$mosConfig_user = 'joomla_joomla' - this is the name of the username which will be used to access the Joomla MySQL database
$mosConfig_password = 'password' - password for MySQL database
$mosConfig_db = 'joomla_joomla' - MySQL Joomla database name
$mosConfig_absolute_path = '/home/xxxdomain/public_html/' - this the absolute path to your Joomla installation. This differs from host to host so you will probably need to contact your host to ask for this. This used because there are a number of core files / components files which use other files. These files are imported or referenced using the exact path to the file. If this setting is not correct, you will get a File Does not exist error.
$mosConfig_live_site = 'http://www.your-domain.com' - this is used so that Joomla can create links links. If you want your site and links to have a www, then put http://www.your-domain.com, if you don't want a www, the put http://your-domain.com. These settings need to be supported by your host.
$mosConfig_cachepath = '/home/xxxdomain/public_html/cache' - this is absolute path to the cache directory. The cache is used to increase the performance of your website. As you can see this is the same as the absolute path plus /cache (since this is the default directory where the cache files are stored.

Once all these entries in the configuration.php file have been given the correct values, Joomla should be able to access the database and code, and thus if you go to the address of your page, you should have a working Joomla website with all the customisation you have done. If not, one of the above settings is probably incorrect, or you might need to configure some settings further.

Test and secure the website

Go through all the website, to make sure that everything has been setup correctly. Since you should have uploaded the website, most of your settings should be correct. However, you might still have some minor configurations to do, so go through each page and area to test the everything is working correctly.

You should also take all the steps to secure your Joomla website.

The Easy Way Out

As you can see, the steps are fairly complicated and require quite some knowledge of various technologies. This is not something which should be attempted by someone who does not have experience or who does not understand what is going on. If you think these instructions are too difficult to follow, use a third party component which will do all the dirty work for you. A recommended tool for this is the JoomlaCloner component. This allows you to move your Joomla installation easily.

Installing Joomla on local computer (localhost)

Installing Joomla on local computer (localhost)

First to install joomla you need a webserver, php and mysql installed on your computer. If you don't have these installed..download WAMP (Windows Apache MySql PHP) server and install it. I am writing this tutorial using WAMP
as my server. But these steps are almost same in all other servers.

Follow the steps below

1. First you need joomla package. Goto joomla website and download the latest version of joomla.
Follow this link download joomla. This tutorial is based on Joomla 1.5.x

2. unzip(extract) the file and rename it to joomla.

3. Then place it on www directory of the WAMP server.(or htdocs directory if you are using XAMPP server)

4. Now type http://localhost/joomla on your browser address bar. You'll see the installation page of joomla...

5. select your language and Click on next.

6. you'll see a pre-installation check page. Click Next.

7. You'll see the licence page. Click Next.

8. Database(MySQL) configuration page.

Database type: leave it mysql

hostname: type localhost

username: type root (or your mysql username)

password: type password of your mysql account (the default is empty for root)

Database name: type joomla (or anything you wish)

(Now the database joomla will be automatically created in your mysql.)

Click Next

9. Ftp configuration page. Leave it and click Next.

10.Main configuraion page.

Site Name: anything you like

Your email: type your email address.

Admin password:type any password you like (this will be the password for the admin account)

confirm password: type the above password again.

Next, click on Install Sample Data. You'll see Sample data installed successfully.

Click Next.

11. Finish.... Now go to "joomla" folder in www directory and delete the "installation" folder. This is for security reasons.

Note: If you don't delete the installation folder, you can't access joomla home page.

Success...Now type http://localhost/joomla in your browser and you'll see the joomla home page.

Editing the content..
Login as the administrator.
To login as administrator go to http://localhost/joomla/administrator.

You'll see a login page. Type "admin" as username and type in your admin password you used at registration. Now you will see administrator page. Now you can edit cms, install templates and extesnions etc...

Installing Templates and extensions:
In the administrators page, move your mouse over exentsions link, you'll see a drop down menu. Select "install/uninstall". Extension manager will open. You can upload templates and extensions from this page.

After installing a template....go to Extensions at the top....and click on Template Manager from the drop down menu. Now select the template you install and click on "default" to make it the default template.

How to Backup your WordPress Database

Considering what happened on this incident , I think it's fitting to write up a tutorial on how to backup your wordpress Database. There are a couple of ways to backup your database, I'm going to show you how to do it using WordPress Database Backup Plugin .

Extract wp-db-backup.php, upload it into /wp-content/plugins/ and activate it under the Plugins menu.
Click the Manage menu in your WordPress admin area.
Click the Backup sub-menu.
The plugin will look for other tables in the same database. You may elect to include other tables in the backup.
** NOTE **
Including other tables in your backup may substantially increase the
size of the backup file!
Select how you’d like the backup to be delivered: Save to server :
this will create a file in /wp-content/backup-*/ for you to retrieve later Download to your computer :
this will send the backup file to your browser to be downloaded Email :
this will email the backup file to the address you specify
Click “Backup!” and your database backup will be delivered to you.
When having the database backup emailed or sent to your browser for immediate download, the backup file will be deleted from the server when the transfer is finished. Only if you select delivery method “Save to server” will the backup file remain on your server.

Differences Between Conventional Data Backup Systems and Rollback RX

Historically, our defense against a hard drive crash has been a complete disk image kept at a physically separate location - this image is copied back on to a replacement hard drive. This is the foundation of all Data Backup Software (MS Backup, Ghost, etc.) – the physical imaging of data.

But image-based backups have two major problems: they are very resource-hungry and they require a lot of manual intervention. So arduous is this that even disciplined IT shops do it as infrequently as is possible. Most small businesses and individuals seldom get around to doing backups.

But when the time comes to restore – the older the backup, the more work is lost. There is some “logging” software that tries to maintain continuous change tracking, but again, it is very demanding on resources.

As disk hard ware is very stable, the impulse to defer a backup is high. But content corruption has become a major issue. Spyware, Adware, faulty “Upgrades”, incomplete Uninstalls, Key Loggers, Root Kits, and Viruses hit us almost daily. Firewalls, anti-viruses and intrusion detectors lessen the risks, but it is a question of “when” security will be breached, not “if”. The need for a frequent, fast, and efficient backup and restore has never been greater.

Now, Horizon DataSys has come out with RollBack Rx Pro™ that takes a bit-level snapshot of your hard drive in 1 to 3 seconds. You read that correctly, that’s seconds! Rollback Rx is based on a groundbreaking new technology called “incremental sector mapping”. This technology gives it its blazing snapshot speed. And, as only changed sectors are snapshot – the more often you use it, the faster it works. I can’t think of a better encouragement to use it more often.

At Horizon DataSys for example, all the machines in their network are set on an automatic hourly snapshot. When asked why they were doing such frequent backups, President Lyle Patel’s answer was, “’…because we can!” There is literally zero impact on productivity - machines marginally slow for about one second an hour.

And that’s not all. The Rollback Rx Restore function is a true bit-for-bit recovery of the complete hard drive. Pick any snapshot and get back everything as of that point in time: the programs, the drivers, the data, the Registry settings, everything. Rollback Rx even recovers the contents of your Recycle Bin! And how long does that take? Try about 3 seconds plus a restart.

Also, Rollback Rx will store 60,000 snapshots in less than 0.1% of your disk. Multiple restore points are available to you. So, even if you don’t know when your drive was infected, you can step back gingerly until you are clear.

Back from the future

But, if you have to revert a day, a week or a month, what about all the lost work? Believe it or not, Rollback RX recovers data from the future! Let us say that you go back to a snapshot from a month ago. You can ask Rollback Rx to “recover data to latest image”. Rollback RX will hunt forward and update data files (only) from any later snapshots you have taken! If you do hourly snapshots – well, you get the picture.

Here is how you would recover even more. You get an error or discover an infection. Close out all open documents and take an immediate snapshot, infection, error and all. Use Rollback RX to go back to the last clean baseline and ask it to recover data forward. Now, you’ve got every last keystroke back.

A Real Example

Rollback Rx’s performance sounds almost miraculous, but I can personally attest to it. Here is my (Robin Chakravarti) actual experience of my first Snapshot and a Restore.
Using MS Backup: As a benchmark, I backed up my work system: (XP Pro SP2, Kaspersky, MS Office and some data files – altogether around 6 GB). It estimated 4 hours and 40 minutes and an additional 4.3 GB to back up to a second internal hard drive. I tried to work, but the machine just crawled during the backup so, around 2 hours in, I cancelled the job. Does this sound familiar?

Using Rollback Rx Pro: With the same 6 GB system, I did the first snapshot – it took 3 seconds, 400K used. I then immediately took second snapshot – it took 1 second, zero K used. It was so fast that, frankly, I had my suspicions that Rollback was really doing anything.

Then, at my boss’s urging, I deleted the following: MyDocs, MS Office and almost all of \System32 (!).I cleaned all the icons off y Desktop. He wanted me to continue deleting things till I got a BSoD. By this time, I thought I was totally toast anyway and to go on till a BSoD would be overkill. I then took the “restore” option on Rollback. The machine restarted, and offered me a choice of restore points. I selected one and 3 seconds later, EVERYTHING was back- my icons, \System32, MyDocs, MS Office, everything. My “recently opened files” lists were restored into every application. Even my Recycle Bin was back!

Differences from MS System Restore

XP has a built-in System Restore function, but this is restricted to recovering (some not all) system files only. This means that you can uninstall a failing driver or update, but nothing else. Now newer malware survives a System Restore. In addition, System Restore has a certain (ahem!) unfortunate reputation.

Rollback Rx recovers every single bit on the drive. It will recover a system from BSoD, the Blue Screen of Death. It will even rescue a PC whose drive has been formatted AND Fdisked!

Enterprise version

Rollback Rx Pro comes in an Enterprise version that permits remote management of snapshots and rollbacks. Working through a web interface, the security manager can manage any machine in a network from anywhere. This version is popular with large commercial Customers.

Public Access Machines?

Rollback Rx also comes in a “Standard” version that permits only a single snapshot, and not the 60,000 permitted by the Pro version. This snapshot can automatically be restored on logoff or restart; so the next user can have a clean baseline system. This version is popular with institution with a lot of Public Access machines such as School Districts and Libraries. Incidentally, if you take the Enterprise version, you can have any mix of Standard and Pro clients that you please.

Conclusions

I don’t quite know how to phrase this but Rollback Rx is a “complete new thing”. It’s not just another “me too” backup product, offering to work marginally faster and take marginally less space than the competition. Rollback Rx Pro works in seconds and restores in seconds and restores a complete bit-image. Now backup and restore has become a trivial thing.

I had actually begun to dread going the Internet, as it had so many traps for the unwary – but now I lost my fear. I feel like I am back to the first careless days of the Net, when you could safely browse everywhere and hardly ever end up with a virus. And even if I do get infected, it is a trivial matter to back out cleanly.
Of course, you still have to be identify nasty-ware in order to remove it, but hopefully spyware identifiers and firewalls will continue to do a good job. Rollback RX Pro, however, does a much better job of backing you out from an infection.

We hear the same terms bandied about whenever a popular site gets hacked. You know… SQL Injection, cross site scripting, that kind of thing. But what do these things mean? Is hacking really as inaccessible as many of us imagine; a nefarious, impossibly technical twilight world forever beyond our ken?

Not really.

When you consider that you can go to Google right now and enter a search string which will return you thousands of usernames and passwords to websites, you realize that this dark science is really no mystery at all. You'll react similarly when you see just how simple a concept SQL Injection is, and how it can be automated with simple tools. Read on, to learn the basics of how sites and web content management systems are most often hacked, and what you can do to reduce the risk of it happening to you.
SQL Injection

SQL Injection involves entering SQL code into web forms, eg. login fields, or into the browser address field, to access and manipulate the database behind the site, system or application.

When you enter text in the Username and Password fields of a login screen, the data you input is typically inserted into an SQL command. This command checks the data you've entered against the relevant table in the database. If your input matches table/row data, you're granted access (in the case of a login screen). If not, you're knocked back out.

The Simple SQL Injection Hack

In its simplest form, this is how the SQL Injection works. It's impossible to explain this without reverting to code for just a moment. Don't worry, it will all be over soon.

Suppose we enter the following string in a Username field:

' OR 1=1 double-dash-txt.png

The authorization SQL query that is run by the server, the command which must be satisfied to allow access, will be something along the lines of:

SELECT * FROM users WHERE username = ‘USRTEXT '
AND password = ‘PASSTEXT’

…where USRTEXT and PASSTEXT are what the user enters in the login fields of the web form.

So entering `OR 1=1 — as your username, could result in the following actually being run:

SELECT * FROM users WHERE username = ‘' OR 1=1 — 'AND password = '’

Two things you need to know about this:
['] closes the [username] text field.

'double-dash-txt.png' is the SQL convention for Commenting code, and everything after Comment is ignored. So the actual routine now becomes:

SELECT * FROM users WHERE username = '' OR 1=1

1 is always equal to 1, last time I checked. So the authorization routine is now validated, and we are ushered in the front door to wreck havoc.

Let's hope you got the gist of that, and move briskly on.

But the process does serve to illustrate just what SQL Injection is all about — injecting code to manipulate a routine via a form, or indeed via the URL. In terms of login bypass via Injection, the hoary old ' OR 1=1 is just one option. If a hacker thinks a site is vulnerable, there are cheat-sheets all over the web for login strings which can gain access to weak systems. Here are a couple more common strings which are used to dupe SQL validation routines:

username field examples:

* admin'—
* ') or ('a'='a
* ”) or (“a”=”a
* hi” or “a”=”a

… and so on.

Backdoor Injection- Modules, Forums, Search etc.
Hacking web forms is by no means limited exclusively to login screens. A humble search form, for instance, is necessarily tied to a database, and can potentially be used to amend database details. Using SQL commands in search forms can potentially do some extremely powerful things, like calling up usernames and passwords, searching the database field set and field names, and amending same. Do people really get hacked through their search forms? You better believe it. And through forums, and anywhere else a user can input text into a field which interacts with the database. If security is low enough, the hacker can probe the database to get names of fields, then use commands like INSERT INTO, UNION, and so forth to get user information, change product prices, change account settings/balances, and just about anything else… depending on the security measures in place, database architecture and so on.

So you can have security locked down at the login, but poor security on other forms can still be exploited. Unfortunately this is a real worry regarding 3rd party modules for Web CMS products which incorporate forms, and for CMS products these 3rd party modules are often the weakest links which allows hackers access to your database.

Automated Injection
There are tools to automate the process of SQL Injection into login and other fields. One hacker process, using a specific tool, will be to seek out a number of weak targets using Google (searching for login.asp, for instance), then insert a range of possible injection strings (like those listed above, culled from innumerable Injection cheat-sheets on the Web), add a list of proxies to cover his movements, and go play XBox while the program automates the whole injection process.

Remote Injection
This involves uploading malicious files to inject SQL and exploit other vulnerabilities. It's a topic which was deemed beyond the scope of this report, but you can view this PDF if you'd like to learn more.

SQL Injection in the Browser Address Bar
Injections can also be performed via the browser address bar. I don't mean to have a pop at Microsoft, but when it comes to such vulnerabilities, HTTP GET requests with URLs of the following form are most often held to be vulnerable:

http://somesite.com/index.asp?id=10

Try adding an SQL command to the end of a URL string like this, just for kicks:
http://somesite.com/index.asp?id=10 AND id=11

See if both articles come up. Don't shoot your webmaster just yet if it's your own site and you get two articles popping up: this is real low-level access to the database. But some such sites will be vulnerable. Try adding some other simple SQL commands to the end of URLs from your own site, to see what happens.

As we saw above, access to the database raises a number of interesting possibilities. The database structure can be mapped by a skilled hacker through ill-conceived visibility of error messages — this is called database footprinting — and then this knowledge of table names and so forth can be used to gain access to additional data. Revealing error messages are manna - they can carry invaluable table name and structural details.

The following illustrative string is from Imperva.

Cross Site Scripting (XSS)

XSS or Cross Site Scripting is the other major vulnerability which dominates the web hacking landscape, and is an exceptionally tricky customer which seems particularly difficult to stop. Microsoft, MySpace, Google… all the big cahunas have had problems with XSS vulnerabilities. This is somewhat more complicated than SQL Injection, and we'll just have a quick look to get a feel for it.

XSS is about malicious (usually) JavaScript routines embedded in hyperlinks, which are used to hijack sessions, hijack ads in applications and steal personal information.

Picture the scene: you're there flicking through some nameless bulletin board because, yes, you really are that lazy at work. Some friendly girl with broken English implores you to get in touch. 'Me nice gurl', she says. You've always wondered where those links actually go, so you say what the hell. You hover over the link, it looks like this in the information bar:

Hmmm…what the hell, let's give it a bash, you say. The one thing I really need right now is to see an ad for cheap Cialis. Maybe the linked page satisfies this craving, maybe not. Nothing dramatic happens when you click the link, at any rate, and the long day wears on.

When a link in an IM, email, forum or message board is hexed like the one above, it could contain just about anything. Like this example, from SandSprite, which helps steal a session cookie, which can potentially be used to hijack a session in a web application, or even to access user account details.

Stealing cookies is just the tip of the iceberg though — XSS attacks through links and through embedded code on a page or even a bb post can do a whole lot more, with a little imagination.

XSS is mostly of concern to consumers and to developers of web applications. It's the family of security nightmares which keeps people like MySpace Tom and Mark Zuckerberg awake at night. So they're not all bad then, I suppose…

Authorization Bypass

Authorization Bypass is a frighteningly simple process which can be employed against poorly designed applications or content management frameworks. You know how it is… you run a small university and you want to give the undergraduate students something to do. So they build a content management framework for the Mickey Bags research department. Trouble is that this local portal is connected to other more important campus databases. Next thing you know, there goes the farm

Authorization bypass, to gain access to the Admin backend, can be as simple as this:

* Find weak target login page.
* View source. Copy to notepad.
* Delete the authorization javascript, amend a link or two.
* Save to desktop.
* Open on desktop. Enter anything into login fields, press enter.
* Hey Presto.

Here's a great video of a White Hat going through the authorization-bypass process on YouTube. This was done against a small university's website. It's a two-minute process. Note that he gets into the User 1 account, which is not the Admin account in this case. Is Admin User 1 on your User table?
Google Hacking

This is by far the easiest hack of all. It really is extraordinary what you can find in Google's index. And here's Newsflash #1: you can find a wealth of actual usernames and passwords using search strings.

Copy and paste these into Google:

inurl:passlist.txt
inurl:passwd.txt
…and this one is just priceless…
“login: *” “password= *” filetype:xls

Such strings return very random results, and are of little use for targeted attacks. Google hacking will primarily be used for finding sites with vulnerabilities. If a hacker knows that, say, SQL Server 2000 has certain exploits, and he knows a unique string pushed out by that version in results, you can hone in on vulnerable websites.

For specific targets Google can return some exceptionally useful information: full server configurations, database details (so a good hacker knows what kind of injections might work), and so forth. You can find any amount of SQL database dumps as well (fooling around with a Google hack while preparing this article, I stumbled across a dump for a top-tier CMS developer's website). And a vast amount more besides.

johnny.ihackstuff.com is the man to go to for Google hacks. One interesting one I toyed with invited me to the Joomla! install page for dozens of sites… people who had uploaded Joomla!, decided against installing it, and subsequently had either left the domain to rot, or else set a redirect on the page to, say, their Flickr account (in one case). Allowing anybody to walk in and run through the installer. Other query strings target unprotected email/IM archives, and all sorts of very sensitive information. What fun we can have!
Password Cracking

Hashed strings can often be deciphered through 'brute forcing'. Bad news, eh? Yes, and particularly if your encrypted passwords/usernames are floating around in an unprotected file somewhere, and some Google hacker comes across it.

You might think that just because your password now looks something like XWE42GH64223JHTF6533H in one of those files, it means that it can't be cracked? Wrong. Tools are freely available which will decipher a certain proportion of hashed and similarly encoded passwords.
A Few Defensive Measures

* If you utilize a web content management system, subscribe to the development blog. Update to new versions soon as possible.
* Update all 3rd party modules as a matter of course — any modules incorporating web forms or enabling member file uploads are a potential threat. Module vulnerabilities can offer access to your full database.
* Harden your Web CMS or publishing platform. For example, if you use WordPress, use this guide as a reference.
* If you have an admin login page for your custom built CMS, why not call it 'Flowers.php' or something, instead of “AdminLogin.php” etc.?
* Enter some confusing data into your login fields like the sample Injection strings shown above, and any else which you think might confuse the server. If you get an unusual error message disclosing server-generated code then this may betray vulnerability.
* Do a few Google hacks on your name and your website. Just in case…
* When in doubt, pull the yellow cable out! It won't do you any good, but hey, it rhymes.

HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool

I had this problem with my USB flash memory stick: During a new install of WinXP Pro I deleted all partitions seen in WinXP partition manager which unfortunately included my USB Flash Drive which was still left plugged. When I plugg it in, message pops up that I should formate it. If I try to format the flash drive using WinXP I get the message "Windows was unable to complete the format".
I was looking for answers by visiting forums, sending mails to technical support, but nobody had a solution. I solved it by using HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool.
Its usefull piece of software and I think that everybody should have it in basic software collection.

Part 2 - Building a small site the easy way

First steps
Let's start with the assumption that you're going to build a simple site with a few pages for your family, or a local group that has a fairly simple agenda. In this case we can use the normal web page type of site, and there'll be maybe 10 pages or less. This will be what is called an HTML site / a flat site / a hard-coded site / a hand-coded site.

As we saw in Part 1, you will need to do these things:

- buy a domain name
- choose a web page editor
- build the site
- choose a host
- upload the pages to the server

Web page editors
These come in two basic types: text code editors (aka HTML editors or raw code editor) and visual (aka wysiwyg) editors. Visual editors are what most of us use, including me - I build the first stage in a visual editor then adjust the code in an HTML editor - and a what-you-see-is-what-you-get editor is just fine for now.

There are two types of these: the popular type like Kompozer (free) and Dreamweaver (commercial), which can all work with HTML files - and the one-way rapid layout type like WebDwarf (free) or SiteSpinner (commercial), which work in a proprietary code then export to HTML, but cannot import or work with HTML pages.

In addition there are online versions of the visual type that are normally called sitebuilder apps or something similar.

The 2 easy ways to build a web page
Here's my take on this: the single hardest thing for any newcomer is laying out a web page so that it looks like what you want, and the bits go where you want them and stay there.

This is so difficult for a newcomer that I cannot even start to recommend a visual editor of the Dreamweaver or Kompozer type, unless a template solution of some kind is used - otherwise you'll simply spend days trying to get the tool to work. And your page still won't look how you want, because your aspirations will be handicapped by what you can do with the tools. You'll know exactly what I mean if you ever started on a website and just gave up because it was too difficult - and that applies to tens of thousands of people.

You really don't want to go this route because it might put you off websites for ever.

Easy method 1
However, as stated, if you use pre-built templates then it is much easier. It works just fine, if you can find the template you need. Search 'free website templates' and you can find plenty of resources.

Online and host-supplied template site-builders work in exactly the same way, you pick one then add your content. Again, this is fine if you like what's on offer. Their template entirely determines what your site looks like. The advantages are that you get your site up fast, and the design will be OK - in contrast to what will happen if you try to go it alone the first time. The disadvantage is that you may need to search for a time, to find a template that is acceptable to you.

Easy method 2
On the other hand my preferred method is to use a rapid-layout app because that way you get exactly what you want, without the layout hassles. You can layout a page exactly how you want almost immediately, and move anything anywhere instantly. There are none of the issues that you have with Kompozer, for example, trying to get stuff to stick on the page where you want it. But the fast layout apps have two disadvantages: they are one-way only, they work in a proprietary file format and then export to HTML - you can't tweak an existing page, you can only rework the master file and then re-export it. And also you have to design the page yourself, there are few templates for use with these apps.

Nevertheless, this is my preferred solution. One you can try is WebDwarf, which is free. The best commercial version that I know of is SiteSpinner. These applications export to HTML based on divs and CSS, which is a layered, vector technology that is now recognised as the best (and now of course the only acceptable) system. They did so years before Dreamweaver had cottoned on to this, and was still using tables for layout. Table-based layout is the old, 90s-era method, that is now long superseded except for tables of data.

WebDwarf is a free version of SiteSpinner and is still developed, CoolPage is similar but ceased being supported in 2002, though it is still viable for specialist use. WebDwarf validates to HTML Transitional but not Strict, meaning that it is not of the highest quality but acceptable for our purposes.

My easy web page build method is quite simple: build the page in a rapid-layout app, then clean it up in a text code editor. In your case you will use a simple visual editor like Kompozer for this second stage.

As it's not easy to find a quick review of webpage editors from someone who puts usability as the #1 feature for any tool anywhere, and a review having the potential to save you you a huge amount of grief, I figured I'd oblige. ==>

Dreamweaver
One of the best web page editors. Does everything - visual and code, layers or table-based, HTML / PHP / ASP. Extremely hard to use for the beginner, like Photoshop, but probably even harder to get the result you want. Good for improvers, very good for experts. Much of the benefit comes from all the add-on features, like the very good validation tools.

SiteSpinner
Another of the top apps. Was using the current code layout system of divs and CSS a long time before Dreamweaver. A one-way fast layout program with capabilities similar to Dreamweaver, but far easier to use. Builds the same page in about a tenth of the time it takes in Dreamweaver, as it works in real code and with layers. The page is output to .ims format, which is then exported to HTML.

Frontpage
Microsoft's venerable web page editor. Was a good tool in the 90s when pages were built with cells and tables - very low quality by any modern measurement. Produces poor-quality code, with low accessibility and code validation scores. Using it with Frontpage Extensions on a server provides hackers with lots of nice attack vectors. Hard to lay pages out correctly until you learn its ways (like many web editors though). Frontpage-created websites are often crude, due to the restrictions imposed by the creaking method of page construction using cells. RIP!!

NetObjects Fusion
Another one-way app. An alternative to SiteSpinner, but on balance SS is better. In theory NetObjects can read / import HTML pages but you need to see the result - 'not usable' is a polite description.

CoolPage
One of the leading layer-based web editors back in the day, around 2001, this is one-way quick layout app was maybe 5 years ahead of most other apps. Developed by a brilliant coder who was years ahead of his time, this is the fastest of all web editors - you can layout a complex page in a couple of minutes, to pixel-perfect positions, with anything wherever you want. However there are numerous drawbacks to this program now and I certainly don't advise you to use it, it's a fascinating example of what could have been if it had sold and was still supported. The code isn't good now, it's old HTML, upper case, validates to HTML Transitional with a little work. Not for use except by experts who can clean up the resulting code - but the best there is for concept layouts.

Kompozer
This is an update of Nvu, the open-source web editor which ceased being supported. Kompozer is also not one of the busiest projects. It's basically a simpler version of Dreamweaver - you'd use it if you like that style of working but don't want the complexity. Not a bad editor in this style. For novices, its best use is for adding stuff to a page created in a basic rapid-layout app like WebDwarf. You can build a page fast in WebDwarf, export it to HTML, then touch it up with Kompozer.

MS Sharepoint Designer
Lots of arguments about whether this is a valid choice or not as a web editor. Some say it can only be used within the Sharepoint system (and this seems to be Microsoft's stance), others that it's OK, and yet others that it somehow caused system problems and had to be uninstalled. Given the latter I think this one is best avoided, since there are plenty of alternatives.

Best Free HTML Editor

I'm not familiar with the editors on that page so perhaps one there is a better choice than the one I'll suggest for you. You need to ask two important questions though:

1. Can you lay out a page fast with it?
2. Does the code validate?

These are the crucial issues with web editors now, due to real-world requirements that include time constraints and commercial results. If the answer is no to both, then I think it wise to look elsewhere. The ideal web editor builds a page very fast in rapid-layout mode, and the resulting code validates to a Strict doctype (a Transitional doctype is basically a bodge-up that puts a browser into quirks mode). The only one I know that complies is SiteSpinner, though since this isn't my game any more (I only work with CMS and ecommerce now), I can't state this as fact.

WebDwarf
The free version of SiteSpinner, this is the web page editor I advise if you're interested in usability. For me this is vital as I just want to lay the page out quickly and get on with other stuff. It's a one-way app that doesn't work in HTML, it builds the page in a proprietary code (.ims) then exports it to web format. This is a fast way to build a page that has a lot of advantages over the Dreamweaver type that only work in HTML native. The problem with native HTML apps is that you can't really do much in HTML, it's a pig to work with and very limited - much better to work in real code and then export it. However, this means you can't import and work with a web page.
Download WebDwarf

Build that site
Let's go ahead using WebDwarf. We'll build a small, simple site, and upload it to our chosen host. You'll need these basic pages:

1 - the index page, aka front page or home page
2 - some 'inside' pages with your desired content
3 - an About Us page, with your name & address, and what the site's purpose is
4 - a Contact page, with quick-contact details such as your email and phone number
5 - a Links page, for weblinks to other useful sites, and for building reciprocal links
6 - a TOS page, with your terms of use for the site and any conditions, copyright etc

So you can start with 4 to 6 pages or so, and that will do fine. But note: if you are definitely going to have 10 pages or more, don't use this method - I advise you to use the micro-cms method we will look at later on. It's far less painful and it's the modern way. In the hands of novices (of course it's different for experts), the HTML page method is suitable for very small sites with a limited agenda.

Local site folder
You need a folder for your local site, ie the master files on your PC. Create a folder within My Documents or wherever else you think best, and call it 'website' or whatever. Inside it create three folders: html, gfx, and master. These folders hold the web pages, the graphics used, and the master files or source materials.

Set up WebDwarf to open in and save to the master folder. We should start with the index page or index.html - this is the filename of the front page (and is always this name or a close variant). I advise you to use the .html file extension, out of the possible variants such as .html, .htm, .php, and .asp.

Building pages
How to actually build pages and link them is really the subject of another tute, in Part 3. For now - just experiment. An outline of what you need to do is as follows: in WebDwarf, create your first page either from scratch or by using a template. I recommend the latter for your first-ever page, using one of the templates they provide, or simply by modifying the start page they give you.

Save the page as 'master' (the page filename). Use it as your own template, and build all your pages from it as a master layout guide. After making this basic page, you'll use it as the basis for all the site pages. So:

Gadgets are specified in XML. The first line is the standard way to start an XML file. This must be the first line in the file.

The line indicates that the gadget's content type is HTML.
is used to enclose HTML when a gadget's content type is html. It tells the gadget parser that the text within the CDATA section should not be treated as XML. The CDATA section typically contains HTML and JavaScript.

Lots of people need to have a website now, but apart from "What will it cost?", there are two major hurdles to get over first:

- what's it all about and how do I do it?
- where do I find all the kit I need?

OK, well, we'll try and distill a ton of knowledge into a very short space here. It can't be that short, though, 'cause it took about 10 years to learn it!

Is it really free?

You can build, host and run a site entirely for free, no matter what type - even giant CMS (content management system) sites. Of course there is a catch - you most likely won't get hosting that is absolutely ideal in all respects, especially traffic bandwidth, or maybe with the right URLs (page addresses) due to restrictions, but that's all. Apart from that, it really can be done.

However, let's be honest here, the 100% free route is best for small sites without a commercial agenda. A business site needs paid hosting - but the free version is fine for many types of basic sites. And of course, you can try out your site building capabilities, and whether the host is any good, before paying up.

How it all works

1. Buy a domain name
2. Arrange hosting for site
3. Build a site on your PC, upload it to the server -OR- install website software on the server
4. Open champagne

Firstly - how to build your website (we look at how to buy a domain name further down the page).

You can create a website on your PC then upload it to an Internet server. Alternatively, you can install software on a server that does the whole lot for you. But you still have to write the content though :)

Servers are rented out by hosts, aka a web hosting provider. Although most people choose shared hosting, you can also find free hosting. There are always restrictions of some kind, so it's not optimal - but these vary between the different free hosts, so you may well be able to find one that suits.

Shared hosting is the normal type of deal, and it's where there are 50 other sites or more on the server. The less sites the better, as the server slows down with a lot of sites on there as you might expect. You can get paid hosting from $50 (£25) a year and up, but high quality hosting - which means servers limited to a maximum of 50 sites - starts around $150 (£100).

Otherwise, hosting at around $70 - $100 means maybe 200 - 300 sites per server, and free hosting and up to $60 a year may mean thousands of sites per server. For example I checked a server at GoPappy (or similar) and there appeared to be 3,400 sites on it. This is OK for many types of sites (especially HTML sites), but not ideal for business sites run off a database.

A new site doesn't need to worry too much about this, you can always move to better hosting later on. You don't lose anything in any respect by moving hosts.

Creating your website - the decisions

Firstly you need to make some decisions -

is your site going to be easily classified as, for instance, a family home page, a club site, a blog, wiki, forum, or CMS (complicated stuff) type?
is it going to be 4 or 5 pages, or 50-plus?
are you going to do it all yourself or hire people?
is it going to be a temporary site, maybe for an event, at minimum cost?
do you want it to earn money in some way?
will it be a shopping cart / ecommerce site?

It's best to know exactly where you're headed for, otherwise things get messy later. If it's a simple site with a few pages and no complicated functions, then a standard HTML site is indicated - that's the usual type with ordinary web pages that exist on the server. You can also go this route with temporary sites for one-off events.

If it's anything else, you would probably be better off with a database-driven website like a blog or a CMS (content management system). This applies especially if you have any commercial intentions. Any site with over 50 pages should use a CMS of some kind unless there are very good reasons not to - and there are plenty of people who would take that number right down to 10 pages, including me. And maybe lower - a micro-cms is just fine for those jobs.

Flat sites

A flat site is an HTML page one, that you build on your PC with something like Kompozer or Dreamweaver. It's called 'flat' because it has static pages that don't change once they're built. You upload the pages to the server and it hands them out when requested.

Images such as photos and graphics come from the folders on the server that you uploaded them to. These folders are called directories, but they are the same thing.

The advantages of an HTML site are:

it's very simple
you can have precisely the page design you want
it only takes up a tiny amount of web space
it's fast on the server
badly-run servers will still be OK with a straight HTML page website

The disadvantages are:

someone has to hand-code it
to edit a page you must do it locally in a visual or code editor then upload the page
page code changes are not always easy
it has very limited functionality
nothing too adventurous is going to be attempted, unless you get a developer in (aka a coder or programmer)

Dynamic sites

These run on a database (DB) and the pages don't exist, they are built on demand by the web application on the server, which gets the info from a database. This is the type of site construction that many modern sites use now, and probably most websites with any kind of commercial or advanced functionality will use in the future. Even sites that look fairly simple on the surface use databases now, and some sites, like forums and ecommerce, can't really exist without database-driven functionality. Examples of this type of site are ecommerce, CMS (content management systems), and blogs.

Advantages:

no coding to do at all, even for the most complex sites, it all works out of the box
functions / features are added quickly with plugins
will handle the most complex tasks if someone did that before somewhere (a plugin will be available)
templates are used for page layout, and they can usually be changed
building a 1,000 page site is no harder than a 10-page site, the machinery generates the page structure
menus are created automatically
all links everywhere are adjusted every time you make a change, there are no dead links
page edits are done live online via your browser, and they go live immediately

Too many advantages to list, in fact.

Disadvantages:

needs more webspace than a flat site
needs a database, usually MySQL
often needs a better class of host, as servers with old and outdated software and/or poorly set up servers will work OK for HTML sites but not for dynamic ones
security becomes an issue because there are a lot of attack vectors for these webapps, as against HTML sites
there is a steep learning curve for newcomers
to make the templates unique to your site, you need to be able to do basic coding (HTML and CSS)

But in general you will probably know which of these two main classes of website you are going to use. A small and simple site is best created as an HTML site. Also, a site with a complex and different artwork-based layout on every page will need to be an HTML site (or one of its close variants such as PHP or ASP).

Anything else is probably better off as a dynamic site, ie a DB-driven one. This applies especially to a wiki, CMS, forum, shopping cart / ecommerce, membership, directory, or blog website as these can't really function properly without a database.

There is another class of webapps which is dynamic but doesn't use a 'real' database - the flat-file database apps. These are wikis or CMS etc that use a flat-file as the data source, this is a type of text file located among the normal web files. These apps do the job for smaller dynamic sites that don't have a big agenda, and do it very well. They have less functionality but often that isn't a problem. They are excellent for use on a poor server, or one without a database (same thing really), or one where the account management is restricted.
Examples: SkyBlueCanvas CMS, PMwiki.

Choosing a domain name

A domain is the title deed to run a website under that name. It's exactly the same situation as with a house, the title deed is the main thing - not the website, which like a house, is just something parked in that space, and that can be rebuilt if needed. But you can't do anything without the domain, and if you lost it, you'd be pretty well sunk - you'd have to start from scratch. In addition, your domain name can help or hinder you to a remarkable degree, especially for a commercial site.

For these reasons I advise you to think long and hard about your domain name. It will cost you $8 a year to rent but it's worth an inestimable amount more. Once you 'buy' it, it's yours to rent indefinitely, unless you let it lapse.

There are only two realistic choices for a commercial site - a .com domain, or the one specific to your country such as .co.uk for the UK, .ca for Canada. Most sites need to buy both, but trade under the .com domain. There are other choices like .org for a non-profit, .edu for academic resources, but let's assume that this doesn't apply here.

Don't buy a cheap domain because it will cost you a lot of money (unless you're talking about a family site, then it doesn't matter). For example you should avoid a .info domain as these were sold for 60 cents at one time to dump them - and they're still cheap in places - so spammers bought millions of them to 'churn and burn', which means to put spam sites on that would probably be discovered and then banned by search engines, while the spammer built another dozen to replace it. So '.info' means 'cheap rubbish' to a search engine, unless and until proven otherwise. You don't want that, search engines are a site owner's best friend.

Domain name choices
There are two choices - a 'search term' domain or one that takes your fancy. The first type is created to score highly for searches in your chosen niche, so if you're blogging about techno-garage music you pick 'techno-garage.com'. Easy.

Trouble is, the best ones all went years ago, so you have to get a bit creative. Just choose a name that includes whatever people are searching for in your space, add something else if you have to, and break the words with hyphens. Don't get clever or people won't find you.

So for our music blogger, if the first-choice name has gone, we'd maybe pick 'techno-garage-music.com' or something. If you do this, then when someone searches for this material your site is placed higher in the results, as it's more likely to be relevant. And if their search is for *exactly* the words in your domain, this is called an exact-match domain, and you can get right to the top even if your site otherwise rates at #50. This is due to the search engine having to put you up there in case the searcher is looking for your specific site.

Or, you can just choose a name that sounds good to you. This can be a good branding exercise, in that you pick a name that has the vibe you want. Whatever you do, don't choose very long names, or names with tricky spelling. Keep it simple. The best marketing names are simple and easy, like Omo, the soap powder. Chucksbestbarbecueribsandsupplies.com is a mistake. Here's a good example of a successful working domain: picture-research.com
- because it's a search term, it's an exact match, it's easy to remember, and it sounds good for an enterprise.

Go to:
www.namecheap.com
...and create a free account there. This is the best domain name registrar I know of. Their reputation and facilities are superb and you will find the best control panel in domain management there. Actually their prices are nowhere near cheap :) , but you get quality instead.

Login via the *secure* login, so that traffic between you and them is encrypted (in the browser address bar you should see https:/ and not http:/). Research the available domains and buy one or two. Set up the free WhoisGuard identity protection on them, it cuts out spam and other approaches. Do not use spoof names and addresses if you intend that your website has any value - Namecheap are to be trusted (unlike some domain registrars who unfortunately I can't name here), and they handle the business of many major concerns. Note that you should have the site operator's name and address on the website - domain ownership name protection is a different matter.

Otherwise, if you're just dipping a toe in the water, you can get a 'free domain name' at one of the free hosts. It looks like this:

It's not a real domain, it's a sub-domain, and you can't take it with you - it's just a folder on their site. But if this area isn't of much concern to you, if you are putting up a temporary site at minimum cost - it's just fine. Likewise the el cheapo domains like .co.cc and so on. It's OK if you are happy that your business

Heysel Stadium Disaster

The Heysel Stadium Disaster (often simplified to Heysel or the Heysel Disaster) refers to the deaths of 39 (and injury of some 600 more) people, mostly fans of Juventus F.C., before the 1985 European Cup Final held in the Heysel Stadium, Brussels. The disaster is one of the most high profile and one of the worst cases of football hooliganism in European and world football. It was the first of two stadium related disasters of which Liverpool was a part; the other was the Hillsborough Disaster.

Approximately an hour before the scheduled kick-off time a group of supporters of English Liverpool F.C. breached a fence separating them from rival supporters of Juventus F.C. and charged at and attacked the Italian supporters. The Juventus fans retreated, putting pressure on a dilapidated retaining wall, which collapsed away from them. The crush of fans against the wall and its collapse led to many deaths and hundreds of injuries. The game was played despite the disaster in order to prevent further violence.

The tragedy resulted in all English football clubs being placed under an indefinite ban by UEFA from all European competitions (lifted in 1990-91), with Liverpool F.C. being excluded for an additional year and a number of Liverpool fans prosecuted for manslaughter. The disaster has been called "the darkest hour in the history of the UEFA competitions."^[1]

Background

In May 1985 Liverpool were the premier football team in Europe, having been European Cup champions in four of the previous eight seasons. Liverpool reached the final again in 1985, and were looking to defend the title that they won by defeating Roma the previous year. Again they would face Italian opposition, Juventus, who were the reigning Cup Winners' Cup holders and had a team comprising many of Italy's 1982 World Cup winning team, plus the mercurial Michel Platini of France, winner of the Ballon d'Or (awarded to European footballer of the year) in 1983, 1984, and 1985.

29 May 1985

Despite its status as Belgium's national stadium, Heysel Stadium was not a suitable venue for a match such as the European Cup Final. The 55-year-old stadium had not been well maintained for several years, and large parts of the stadium were crumbling. Liverpool players and fans later said that they were shocked at the abject conditions of the ground, despite reports from Arsenal fans that the stadium was a "dump" when the Gunners played there a few years earlier. Liverpool CEO Peter Robinson urged UEFA to choose another venue, to no avail.^[2]

The stadium was crammed with 58,000–60,000 supporters, with more than 25,000 for each team. The two ends behind the goals comprised all-standing terraces, each end split into three zones. The Juventus end was O, N and M. At the other end Liverpool were allocated X and Y, with the Z section (to one side) being reserved for neutral Belgian fans. The idea of this large neutral area was opposed by both Liverpool and Juventus,^[3] as it would provide an opportunity for fans of both clubs to obtain tickets from agencies or from ticket touts outside the ground and thus create a dangerous mix of fans.

At the time Brussels, like the rest of Belgium, already had a large Italian community, and many expatriate Juventus fans bought the section Z tickets.^[4] Added to this, many tickets were bought up and sold by travel agents, mainly to Juventus fans. A small percentage of the tickets ended up in the hands of Liverpool fans.

To add to the tension, the Liverpool X and Y sections were overcrowded after many fans managed to get in without tickets (through lack of patrol).^[5]

Confrontation

At approximately 7 p.m. local time, an hour before kick-off, the trouble started.^[6] The Liverpool and Juventus supporters in sections Y and Z stood merely yards apart. The boundary between the two was marked by temporary chain link fencing and a central thinly-policed no-man's land.^[7] Missiles began to be thrown across the divide. Fans could pick up stones from the terraces beneath them.

As kick-off approached, the throwing became more intense. A group of Liverpool fans charged across the terraces, through and over the wire fence into section Z causing the Juventus fans to retreat. Having no way out, the Juventus fans moved towards the side perimeter wall, near to the corner flag. Some tried to climb over the wall to escape. Many escaped, however the wall could not withstand the force of the fleeing Italian supporters and collapsed.

It was at this point that the majority of the deaths occurred — 39 people died, and a further 600 were injured.^[7]^[8] Bodies were carried away on sections of iron fencing and laid in piles outside, covered with giant football flags. As police and medical helicopters flew in, the down-draught blew away the modest coverings. The situation became chaotic.

In retaliation for the events in section Z, Juventus fans then rioted at their end of the stadium. They advanced down the stadium running track towards the Liverpool supporters seeking confrontation, but police intervention stopped the advance. The Juventus fans fought the police with rocks, bottles and missiles for two hours. One even fired a pistol^[9] (later verified as being a starting pistol). When the game eventually kicked off, riot police were still fighting a pitched battle with Juventus supporters, and they maintained a presence around the entire pitch for the duration of the game.

Before the main match, a friendly game was played by very young Belgian selection players. By pure coincidence, the teenagers were playing in colours identical to the cup contestants. In their first half, the red Belgian team built a 3-0 lead, to the great pleasure of Liverpool fans who started acting as if the Cup game had already started. When the white selection team scored in the second half, around 19:10, the English and Italian fans were starting to brawl. With several minutes to go, the game was called off and the young players were taken away.^[10]

39 victims

39 football fans died in the incident, 32 Italian fans of Juventus FC, 4 Belgians, 2 French and an Irishman.

Juventus 1-0 Liverpool

Despite the scale of the disaster, it was felt that abandoning the game would have risked inciting further trouble, and the match eventually kicked off after the captains of both sides spoke to the crowd and appealed for calm.

Juventus won the match 1-0 thanks to a penalty scored by Michel Platini. The penalty was awarded by Swiss referee Daina for a foul against Zbigniew Boniek. ^[11]

At the end of the game, the Juventus players celebrated their victory in the middle of the pitch and outside. The former Juventus president Giampiero Boniperti recently maintained in his biography to "have ordered the changerooms to be locked and no information should have been leaked inside" since he feared the players could have been assaulted.^[12] Consistent statements have been released by Juventus striker Paolo Rossi.

Aftermath

Officially the entire blame for the incident was laid on the fans of Liverpool FC. On 30 May official UEFA observer Gunter Schneider said "Only the English fans were responsible. Of that there is no doubt." UEFA, the organiser of the event, the owners of Heysel Stadium and the Belgian police were never investigated for culpability. There was no official inquiry into the causes of the disaster.^[4]

On 31 May, British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher put pressure upon the FA to withdraw English clubs from European competition,^[13] and then two days later UEFA banned English clubs for "an indeterminate period of time". On 6 June FIFA extended the ban to all worldwide matches, but this was modified one week later to allow friendly matches to take place. The ban did not apply to the English national team. English clubs were banned indefinitely from European club competitions with a proviso being added that Liverpool would serve a further three year ban after the ban on other English clubs had been lifted.^[14] In the event English clubs were banned for five years. Liverpool in the end only served one year of the extra three year ban.

The British police undertook a thorough investigation to bring to justice the perpetrators. Some 17 minutes of film and many still photographs were examined. TV Eye produced an hour-long programme featuring the footage and the British press also published the photographs.

There were 27 arrests on suspicion of manslaughter – the only extraditable offence applicable to events at Heysel. The majority of these people were from Merseyside. Some of these people had previous convictions for football-related violence. In 1989, after a 5-month trial in Belgium, fourteen Liverpool fans were given 3-year sentences for involuntary manslaughter.^[15] Half the terms were suspended^[16] and it is unclear how many served their sentences.

Heysel Stadium continued to be used for hosting athletics for almost a decade, but no further football matches took place in the old stadium. In 1994, the stadium was demolished and the King Baudouin Stadium built on the site. On 23 August 1995 the new stadium welcomed the return of football to Heysel in the form of a friendly match between Belgium and Germany. It then hosted a major European final on 8 May 1996 when Paris Saint-Germain defeated Rapid Vienna 1–0 to win the Cup Winners Cup.

Players' and supporters' reactions

Several Juventus players and supporters have expressed unhappiness with the way Juventus dealt with the incident, in that they displayed the trophy in their trophy cabinet straight after the game, and didn't do enough to help the bereaved families, for example, not having any kind of memorial to the supporters who died.^[15] Despite efforts by Liverpool F.C. and sections of the media to suggest otherwise, the majority of Juventus supporters have never forgiven the Liverpool supporters for their actions at Heysel and have displayed these sentiments on many occasions since.^{[citation needed]}

Some Liverpool players and supporters feel that it was wrong to blame the disaster solely on Liverpool supporters. They believe other factors, such as the ticketing arrangements and inadequate policing, contributed to the events. As mentioned above, Liverpool players and supporters also argue that despite no fatalities from hundreds of previous games, by then it was crumbling and inadequate for a major football match; indeed, Liverpool's "official" account of the disaster implies that it would have never happened had UEFA staged it at any other available ground. The fact that there was never an official inquiry also raised eyebrows.^[2]

A number of commentators have questioned Liverpool's handling of the disaster, particularly in comparison to high profile 'Justice for the 96' campaign fought after the Hillsborough Disaster - Liverpool Football Club has never accepted culpability, or responsibility for the actions of its fans and has never formally apologised for the events or compensated the families of those killed.^[17]^[18]^[19] although in 2005 the Liverpool Echo published a front page emblazoned with the words 'We're Sorry' reflecting a widespread opinion that the fans of Liverpool Football Club were the main culprits and had brought shame upon the city.

Consequences for football in England

The ban from European competition had mixed effect on the game in England. In club football, before the 5-year ban English clubs had been dominant in European competition with 6 European Cup victories, 1977–1982, and again in 1984. Since the ban ended in 1990, English teams have won the tournament three times (1999, 2005, 2008). In the period 1991-1996, no champions of England made either the final group stages of the revised European Cup/UEFA Champions League or the knockout rounds from 1995-1996 onward.

However, English clubs won the European Cup Winners Cup in 1991, 1994 (losing finalists 1995) and 1998, and UEFA Cup in 2001 (losing finalists in 2000 and 2006). Since 1997, English teams have exited the UEFA Champions League eight times at the semifinal stage and eight times at the quarterfinal stage.

From 1 May 2008, the English league surpassed La Liga and returned to the top of the UEFA coefficient list, based on performance of English clubs in European competition against rival leagues. This is the first time England has topped the list since the Heysel Disaster and the ban on European competition in 1985. This point can be argued as the quantifiable return of English football to the level just prior to the disaster - a period of 23 years. Further, English sides having reached the final for 5 consecutive seasons between 2004/05 and 08/09 - Liverpool in 2005 and 2007, Arsenal in 2006, Manchester United in 2008 and 2009, and Chelsea in 2008.

Impact on Liverpool

The impact on Liverpool Football Club is arguable. Liverpool had already captured four European Cup titles within the 8 year span, but they would have to wait twenty-one years to win the fifth. However, Liverpool continued to perform well in the Football League and FA Cup during the ban from Europe, only falling into relative decline following the replacement of Kenny Dalglish as manager with Graeme Souness in 1990 - the last time to date that Liverpool have won the league championship. In the late 80s and early 90s, Liverpool also faced increased competition from George Graham's Arsenal who captured in 1988-89 and 1990-91 league titles at Liverpool's expense, with the rise of Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson throughout 1990s and Arsenal now under Arsène Wenger from 1996 (and to a lesser extent, from Chelsea, Newcastle United and Leeds United) making qualification for Europe far more difficult until the expansion of the UEFA Champions League qualification to 3 teams in 1999-2000 and to 4 in 01-02 - the financial implosion of Leeds United and decline of Newcastle United after the exit of Bobby Robson greatly reducing competition for 4th position at the same time. The impact on local rivals Everton was significant in that the ban denied the side the chance to appear in the European Cup and other European competition and led to the loss of manager Howard Kendall and several key players; however, during the ban the club remained relatively successful.

Impact on stadiums

After Heysel, English clubs began to impose stricter rules intended to make it easier to prevent troublemakers from attending domestic games, with legal provision introduced to exclude troublemakers for 3 months introduced in 1986, and the Football (Offences) Act introduced in 1991.

However, serious progress on legal banning orders preventing foreign travel to matches was arguably not made until the violence involving England fans (mainly involving neo-Nazi groups such as Combat 18) at a match against the Republic of Ireland on 15 February 1995 and violent scenes at the 1998 FIFA World Cup. Rioting at UEFA Euro 2000 saw introduction of new legislation and wider use of police powers - by 2004, 2000 banning orders were in place, compared to fewer than 100 before Euro 2000^[20]^[21].

The main reforms to stadiums in England did not come until after the Taylor Report resulting from the Hillsborough disaster (that time, Liverpool supporters were the victims), in which 96 people died in 1989. An example of the new rules is that fans are now often required to become members of clubs in order to apply for game tickets, and closed-circuit cameras have been installed throughout stadiums. Fans who misbehave can have their tickets revoked and be legally barred from attending games at any English stadium.

Teams affected by the ban

During the duration of the ban arising from the Heysel disaster, 20 teams missed out on the chance to play in the three European competitions.

Even after the ban was lifted in 1990, English teams had to wait five seasons before earning back all of the European places which they had held before 1985. This affected eight teams, who missed qualification for the UEFA Cup until and including the 1994-95 tournament.

Commemorations

The Kop creates a mosaic saying "Amicizia" ("Friendship")

During Euro 2000, all the members of the Italian team left flowers on the site, in honour to the dead fans of Juventus.

On 29 May 2005, a £140,000 sculpture was unveiled at the new Heysel stadium, to commemorate the disaster. The monument is a sundial designed by French artist Patrick Rimoux and includes Italian and Belgian stone and the poem Funeral Blues by Englishman W. H. Auden to symbolise the sorrow of the three nations. 39 lights shine, one for each who died that night.^[23]

Juventus and Liverpool were drawn together in the quarter-finals of the 2005 Champions League. This match took place 20 years after the Heysel incident and was the first time the clubs faced each other since that time. Before the first leg at Anfield Liverpool fans held up placards to form a banner saying "amicizia" ("friendship" in Italian). Many Juventus fans applauded the gesture, though a significant number chose to turn their backs on it.^[24] Many refused to accept the offer of friendship, citing the 20-year gap between the tragedy and the apology.

British composer Michael Nyman made a piece called "Memorial" which was originally part of a larger work of the same name written in 1985 in memory of the Juventus fans who died at Heysel Stadium.

iGoogle (Previously Google Personalized Homepage)

Customizable homepage, which can contain Web feeds and Google Gadgets, launched in May 2005. It was renamed to iGoogle on April 30, 2007 (previously used internally by Google).

Notebook

Web clipping application for saving online research. The tool permits users to clip text, images, and links from pages while browsing, save them online, access them from any computer, and share them with others. Google recently stopped development on Notebook and no longer accepts sign-ups, While old users can still access their notebooks, new commers are offred to try other services such as Google Docs and Google Bookmarks^[1].

A knol is an authoritative article about a specific topic.

Marratech e-Meeting

Web conferencing software, used internally by Google's employees. Google acquired the software from creator Marratech on April 19, 2007. Google has not yet stated what it will do with the product.

Orkut

Social networking service, where users can list their personal and professional information, create relationships amongst friends and join communities of mutual interest. In November 2006, Google opened Orkut registration to everyone, instead of being invitation only.

Page Creator

Webpage-publishing program, which can be used to create pages and to host them on Google's servers. However, to focus on another Google Webpage-publishing service called Google Sites, the new sign-up are not longer accepted since 2008. And all existing content on Page Creator will be transferred to Google Sites in 2009.

Picasa Web Albums

Online photo sharing, with integration with the main Picasa program.

Reader

Web-based news aggregator, capable of reading Atom and RSS feeds. It allows the user to search, import and subscribe to feeds. The service also embeds audio enclosures in the page. Major revisions to Google Reader were made in October 2006.

Sites (Previously Jotspot)

Website creation tool for private or public groups, for both personal and corporate use.

SMS Channels (Google India Only)

Launched September 2008, allows users to create and subscribe to channels over SMS. Channels can be based on RSS feeds.

Questions and Answers (Google Russia Only)

Community-driven knowledge market website. Launched on June 26, 2007 that allows users to ask and answer questions posed by other users. [1]

Voice

Known as "GrandCentral" before 2009-03-11, this is a free voice communications product that includes a POTS telephone number. It includes a follow-me service that allows the user to forward their Google voice phone number to simultaneously ring up to 6 other phone numbers. It also features a unified voice mail service, SMS and free outgoing calls via Google's "click2call" and 3rd party dialers.

YouTube

Popular free video sharing Web site which lets users upload, view, and share video clips. In October 2006, Google, Inc., announced that it had reached a deal to acquire the company for $1.65 billion USD in Google's stock. The deal closed on 13 November 2006.

A set of common APIs for building social applications on many websites.

Webmaster Tools (Previously Google Sitemaps)

Sitemap submission and analysis for the Sitemaps protocol. Renamed from Google Sitemaps to cover broader features, including query statistics and robots.txt analysis.

Checkout

Online payment processing service provided by Google aimed at simplifying the process of paying for online purchases. Webmasters can choose to implement Google Checkout as a form of payment.

Code Search

Search engine for programming code found on the Internet.

Directory

Collection of links arranged into hierarchical subcategories. The links and their categorization are from the Open Directory Project, but are sorted using PageRank.

Directory (Google China)

Navigation directory, specifically for Chinese users.

Experimental Search

Options for testing new interfaces whilst searching with Google, including Timeline views and keyboard shortcuts.

Finance

Searchable US business news, opinion, and financial data. Features include company-specific pages, blog search, interactive charts, executives information, discussion groups and a portfolio.

Groups

Web and e-mail discussion service and Usenet archive. Users can join a group, make a group, publish posts, track their favorite topics, write a set of group web pages updatable by members and share group files. [2]. In January, 2007, version 3 of Google Groups was released. New features include the ability to create customised pages and share files.

Image Labeler

Game that induces participants to submit valid descriptions (labels) of images in the web, in order to later improve Image Search.

Image Search

Image search engine, with results based on the filename of the image, the link text pointing to the image and text adjacent to the image. When searching, a thumbnail of each matching image is displayed.

Language Tools

Collection of linguistic applications, including one that allows users to translate text or web pages from one language to another, and another that allows searching in web pages located in a specific country or written in a specific language.

Life Search (Google China)

Search engine tailored towards everyday needs, such as train times, recipes and housing.

Movies

A specialised search engine that obtains Film showing times near a user-entered location as well as providing reviews of films compiled from several different websites.

Music (Google China)

A site containing links to a large archive of Chinese pop music (principally Cantopop and Mandopop), including audio streaming over Google's own player, legal lyric downloads, and in most cases legal MP3 downloads. The archive is provided by Top100.cn (i.e. this service does not search the whole Internet) and is only available in mainland China. It is intended to rival the similar, but containing links to illegal music, service provided by Baidu.

News

Automated news compilation service and search engine for news. There are versions of the aggregator for more than 20 languages. While the selection of news stories is fully automated, the sites included are selected by human editors.

News Archive Search

Feature within Google News, that allows users to browse articles from over 200 years ago.

Patent Search

Search engine to search through millions of patents, each result with its own page, including drawings, claims and citations.

Product Search (Previously Froogle)

Price engine that searches online stores, including auctions, for products.

Rebang (Google China)

Google China's search trend site, similar to Google Zeitgeist. Currently part of Google Labs.

Scholar

Search engine for the full text of scholarly literature across an array of publishing formats and scholarly fields. Today, the index includes virtually all peer-reviewed journals available online.

Sets

List of items generated when the user enters a few examples. For example, entering "Green, Purple, Red" produces the list "Green, Purple, Red, Blue, Black, White, Yellow, Orange, Brown."

SMS

Mobile phone short message service offered by Google in several countries, including the USA, Japan, Canada, India and China and formerly the UK, Germany and Spain. It allows search queries to be sent as a text message. The results are sent as a reply, with no premium charge for the service.

Squared

Creates tables of information about a subject from unstructured data

Auto-completion in search results while typing to give popular searches.

University Search

Listings for search engines for university websites.

U.S. Government Search

Search engine and Personalized Homepage that exclusively draws from sites with a .gov TLD.

Video

Video search engine and online store for clips internally submitted by companies and the general public. Google's main video partnerships include agreements with CBS, NHL and the NBA. Also searches videos posted on YouTube, Metacafe, Daily Motion, and other popular video hosting sites.

Non-premium phone service for searching and contacting local businesses

Web History (Previously Google Search History / Personalized Search)

Web page tracking, which records Google searches, Web pages, images, videos, music and more. It also includes Bookmarks, search trends and item recommendations. Google released Search History in April 2005^[2], and then expanded and renamed the service to Web History in April 2007 as it started to also record browsing history.^[3]

Web search engine, which is Google's core product. It was the company's first creation, coming out of beta on September 21, 1999, and remains their most popular and famous service. It receives 1 billion requests a day and is the most used search engine on the Internet.

Traffic statistics generator for defined websites, with strong AdWords integration. Webmasters can optimize their ad campaigns, based on the statistics that are given. Analytics is based on the Urchin software and the new version released in May 2007 integrates improvements based on Measure Map.

Data trend viewing platform to make nations' statistics accessible on the internet in an animated, interactive graph form.

Trends

Graph plotting application for Web Search statistics, showing the popularity of particular search terms over time. Multiple terms can be shown at once. Results can also be displayed by city, region or language. Related news stories are also shown.

Zeitgeist

Collection of lists of the most frequent search queries. There are weekly, monthly and yearly lists, as well as topic and country specific lists. Closed 22 May 2007 and replaced by "Hot Trends, a dynamic feature in Google Trends".

Answers

Question and answer service, allowing users to pay researchers to answer questions. Google announced the closing of service on November 28, 2006. All past discussions have been publicly archived.

Saved browser settings for backup and use on other installations of Mozilla Firefox.

Deskbar

Bar on your desktop with a minibrowser built into it. It was discontinued when a very similar feature was added to Google desktop. Some people preferred Google deskbar for its ability to add custom searching and the mini-browser so you wouldn't have to open an actual window. The last release, version 9.95, had a .NET plugin.

Free Search

Free code to embed either web search or site search into another website. Discontinued in favour of Google Co-op's Custom Search Engine.

Joga Bonito

Soccer community site, similar to services such as MySpace, in that each member had a profile, and could join groups based on shared interests. The service allowed a user to meet other fans, create games and clubs, access athletes from Nike, and watch and upload video clips and photos.

Lively (Windows XP/Vista)

3D animated chat program launched on July 9, 2008 and closed December 31, 2008.^[4]

Local

Local listings service, before it was integrated with mapping. The merged service was then called Google Local, which was further renamed to Google Maps due to popular demand.

Music Trends

Music ranking of the songs played with iTunes, Winamp, Windows Media Player and Yahoo Music. Trends were generated by Google Talk's "share your music status" feature.

Personalized Search

Search results personalization, now fully merged with Google Accounts and Web History.

Public Service Search

Non-commercial organization service, which included free SiteSearch, traffic reports and unlimited search queries. Discontinued in February 2007 and re-directed to Google Co-op.

Related Links

Script that places units for related Web content, including pages, searches and videos, on the owner's Website, through embedded code. Discontinued in July 2007.

SearchMash

SearchMash.com Search engine that means to "test innovative user interfaces." Among its features are the ability to display image results on the same page as web results, feedback about features, and continuous scrolling results. Aside from its privacy policy and terms of service, there is no Google branding on the site. Discontinued November 2008.

Shared Stuff

Web page sharing system, incorporating a Share bookmarklet to share pages, as well as a page for viewing the most popular shared items. Pages can also be shared through third party applications, such as del.icio.us or Facebook. It was discontinued in March 30, 2009.

Spreadsheets

Spreadsheet management application, before it was integrated with Writely to form Google Docs & Spreadsheets. It was announced on 6 June 2006.

Video Player (Mac OS X/Windows 2000/XP)

Standalone desktop application that allowed you to view videos from Google Video.

Voice Search

Automated voice system for searching the Web using the telephone. Now called Google Voice Local Search, it is currently integrated on the Google Mobile web site.

Writely

Web-based word processor created by software company Upstartle, who were acquired by Google on March 9, 2006. On October 10, 2006, Writely was merged into Google Docs & Spreadsheets.

Google X

Re-designed Google search homepage, using a Mac OS style interface. It appeared in Google Labs, but was removed the following day for undisclosed reasons.

Jaiku

Jaiku is mobile micro blogging and presence service. (Discontinued January 2009)

Dodgeball

Social networking site built specifically for use on mobile phones. Users text their location to the service, which then notifies them of crushes, friends, friends' friends and interesting venues nearby. (Discontinued January 2009)

Catalogs

Search engine for over 6,600 print catalogs, which are acquired through Optical character recognition. (Discontinued January 2009)

Google Notebook

View and add notes to your Google Notebook. (Discontinued January 2009)

Putem slika ću vam objasniti zašto smatram ovaj program izuzetno korisnim pri organizaciji ikonica na desktopu:

Ovako je izgledao moj desktop prije instalacije SideSlide aplikacije.

Ovo je moj desktop nakon instalacije SideSlide programa. Mora da se pitate - gdje su nestale sve te ikonice? Odgovor je na sledećoj slici.

Ikonice koje su prije bile na desktopu, sada su u iskačućem prozoru programa SlideShow (ikonice sam prethodno ručno prevukao sa desktopa na ovaj prozor). Da biste otvorili prozor sa ikonicama dovoljno je da kursor miša postavite na gornju ivicu ekrana i prozor sa ikonicama će iskočiti.

Važna napomena: U iskačući prozor smijete prevući samo prečice, a ne foldere ili fajlove sa orginalnih lokacija. Ukoliko to pokušate izrisaćete ih. Nemojte ponoviti moju grešku.
