Shared Hosting

Starter: Beginning at $3.49 per month, this plan jumps up to $7.99 per month at the regular price.

Well, hello there! Those Dell MID rumors we've been hearing have finally received vindication in the form of a nice, picture-heavy leak courtesy of some industrious folks in Vietnam. What we know as of now is that there's an 800 x 480 capacitive touchscreen display (with multitouch zooming), WiFi, Bluetooth and 3G WWAN connectivity, all riding atop an Android 2.0 (aka, ~~Donut~~ Eclair) install. A dual-LED flash 5 megapixel camera adorns the back, and there's a 1,300mAh battery to power all that goodness. See pics below and a video awaits after the break, where an old friend of ours plays with the jumbo smartphone.

South Africa's broadband has got to be feeling pretty ill-equipped today considering a real, wing-flapping pigeon beat its transfer speeds. No really, a company found out that sending a bird with a 4GB USB drive was faster than uploading.
That has got to hurt for Telkom, one of South Africa's main ADSL providers, but damn is Winston the pigeon feeling like the man today. He is telling all the other pigeons, how it took him two hours to carry the strapped-to-his-back flash drive 60 miles to the company's second office in Durban. In the same time the broadband service had only sent 4 percent of the data. You do the math but that is pretty damn slow upload speeds. No wonder the guys at Unlimited IT first joked that a bird could send files faster.
This is just the kind of story I want to read to children at night (I'm thinking the picture book is called 'Winston and the Broadband'). Let's hope South Africa gets those fiber optic lines installed soon or else a crap load of bird seed. [BBC]

Watch movies with subtitles on the iPhone: "A little-known feature of the iPhone is its ability to display subtitles on movides. To do this, you just need the free programs MKVtools, SubCleaner, and Subler, and aconversion program -- I recommend FilmRedux. Once those are installed on your Mac, do this:

Convert the file to a raw, unsubtitled .MP4 with FilmRedux
Extract the UTF8 subtitle file (.srt) from the original file with MKVtools
Clean up the .srt with subcleaner
Merge the .mp4 and the .srt together in subler

Then sync the movie over to your iPhone. Next to the rewind button, a new subtitle button will appear.

Send Growl notifications to Macs from Linux boxes: "There is a way of sending messages to Growl running on a Mac OS X machine from any Unix machine with the standard X11 tools. You do not need to install anything on the Unix machine, just use the xkbbell command.

In short, you need to first install growlnotify on the Mac. You then need a configuration file, xkbevd.cf, with the following content:

Bell()  shell '/usr/local/bin/growlnotify --message \'$(name)\' --appIcon X11; true '

Start the X11 server, then start the xkbevd daemon (again on the Mac) pointing to the configuration file you just created (xkbevd -cfg xkbevd.cf -bg). You can then call the command xkbbell on the Unix machine to generate a Growl notification on the Mac. For example, xkbbell 'lasers offline'. There are detailed in...

Fixing Forklift 1.7 for running on Snow Leopard

I recently discovered Forklift and was so delighted with the software, I bought it after using the trial for only 15 minutes! Thank you for such a wonderful product!

I have two Macs. One is running Leopard 10.5.4. This runs Forklift fine. The other is running the latest developer build of 10.6 (build 10A432). Unfortunately, Forklift won't run at all; it crashes on launch.

I know Snow Leopard hasn't been released. But with the recent freeze of the 10.6 APIs, I'm hoping that a Snow Leopard compatible build can be released soon. While I really like Forklift, unfortunately I am not in a position to revert back to 10.5 on my development machine.

Here is a workaround to fix it
