It looked and felt a lot like XP and Vista, but with some noticeable and useful tweaks including everything from Snap (aligning two windows side by side in a matter of seconds) to Snipping tool and decent SSD support. It’s little wonder, then, that Windows 7 sold very well indeed.

With Windows 8, however, Microsoft has made the most significant visible changes to the OS that we’ve seen in over a decade, and most reviews have been far less glowing. So when ordering my new laptop the plan was to install Windows 7 on it as soon as it arrived. But, not one to blindly take other people's word for it, when the laptop did arrive I thought I’d relent on my original plan and actually give Windows 8 a go for a week. Here’s how I got on.

Promotional feature: Bingo games a success on mobile devices

How the growth of smartphones has breathed new life into the world of bingo...

Windows 8: Performance Benchmarks

With Windows 8 here at last, we face it off against Windows 7 to see how the new OS performs

Bit-tech & Custom PC Pub Quiz: The Full Report

Last week we held our first ever pub quiz; here's what happened on the night.

Open source alternatives to Windows Home Server

Sad that Windows Home Server is no more?
Some would say I'm taking it all a little too seriously, and they'd be right of course, but I refuse to believe I'm the only one. As a result I'm speaking for all those that are too polite to say anything, those that don't want to cause a stir by suggesting that their best mate, sister or colleague just exercise some restraint with that damn upload button. Share this article, get the word out, and help to make the internet a more pleasant place.

Bit-tech survey results

We asked you what you thought of bit-tech, and here is what you told us

The story of artificial intelligence

The story of artificial intelligence, from chess to the possible end of humankind as we know it...

Bit-tech is on the lookout for new writers

If you've ever fancied writing for Bit-tech, then this is what you need to do...

Bit-tech builds the LEGO Super Star Destroyer

Don't think we can do it?
