1. Invite Comments - I notice that when I specifically invite comments that people leave them in higher numbers than when I don't. To some degree this confuses me as most of my readers know that they can leave comments on any post - but I guess inviting a comment triggers a response to some extent. Also keep in mind that new readers that are unfamiliar with blogging don't always know about comments or how to use them - invitations to participate in well laid out and easy to use comments systems are good for helping them participate.

2. Ask Questions - Including specific questions in posts definitely helps get higher numbers of comments. I find that when I include questions in my headings that it is a particularly effective way of getting a response from readers as you set a question in their mind from the first moments of your post.

3. Be Open Ended - If you say everything there is to say on a topic you're less likely to get others adding their opinions because you'll have covered what they might have added. While you don't want to purposely leave too many things unsaid there is an art to writing open ended posts that leaves room for your readers to be experts also.

4. Interact with comments left - If you're not willing to use your own comments section why would your readers? If someone leaves a comment interact with them. This gets harder as your blog grows but it's particularly important in the early days of your blog as it shows your readers that their comments are valued, it creates a culture of interactivity and gives the impression to other readers that your comments section is an active place that you as the blogger value. As the activity in your comments section grows you may find you need to be slightly less active in it as readers will start to take over on answering questions and creating community - however don't completely ignore your comment threads.

It's just a theory but I think a well managed and moderated comments section that is free of spam and that deals with well with people stepping out of line is an attractive thing to readers. I personally don't mind people expressing different opinions to one another in comments but when I sense things are getting a little out of hand and too personal I often step in to attempt to bring some order to the situation (I rarely delete non spam comments). I find that people have responded to this and that comment threads generally stay constructive as a result.

6. Be humble - I find that readers respond very well to posts that show your own weaknesses, failings and the gaps in your own knowledge rather than those posts where you come across as knowing everything there is to know on a topic. People are attracted to humility and are more likely to respond to it than a post written in a tone of someone who might harshly respond to their comments.

7. Be gracious - Related to humility is grace. There are times where you as the blogger will get something wrong in your posts. It might be spelling or grammar, it could be the crux of your argument or some other aspect of your blogging. When a someone leaves a comment that shows your failing it's very easy to respond harshly in a defensive manner. We've all seen the flaming that can ensue. While it's not easy - a graceful approach to comments where you admit where you are wrong and others is right can bring out the lurkers and make them feel a little safer in leaving comments.

8. Be controversial? - I put a question mark after this one because it doesn't always work (and I personally avoid it as much as I can these days) - but there's nothing like controversy to get people commenting on your blog. Of course with controversy comes other consequences - one of which is the risk of putting off less vocal members of your readership.

9. 'Reward' Comments - There are many ways of acknowledging and 'rewarding' good comments that range from simply including a 'good comment' remark through to highlighting them in other posts that you write. Drawing attention to your readers who use comments well affirms them but also draws attention of other readers to good use of your comments section.

10. Make it Easy to Comment - I leave a lot of comments on a lot of blogs each week - but there is one situation where I rarely leave a comment - even if the post deserves it - blogs that require me to login before making a comment. Maybe I'm lazy (actually there's no maybe about it) or maybe there's something inside me that worries about giving out my personal details - but when I see a comments section that requires registration I almost always (95% or more of the time) leave the blog without leaving the comment that I want to make. While I totally understand the temptation to require registration for comments (combatting spam in most cases) something inside me resists participating in such comments sections. Registration is a hurdle you put in front of your readers that some will be willing to leap but that others will balk at (the same is often said about other comments section requirements that go beyond the basics). Keep your comments section as simple and as easy to use as possible.

I’m going to go through the basics of affiliate marketing today, something that is done by many people make money online. It’s not the only way, but I should tell you it’s one of the easier ways to make money online, which is why so many people simply love it!

If you don’t already know what affiliate marketing is, it simply means you market and promote someone else’s existing product and get paid a percentage of the price as a commission . There are several good companies that you can go to and find products to sell – such as Clickbank.com, PayDotCom, Commission Junction, etc. They all have their pro’s and con’s, but I prefer Clickbank myself so that is the one I will use as an example here. (Note: check the others out too, don’t blindly follow me or anyone else’s dictate – be your own person and weigh the benefits that you prefer).

One of the most important things to consider when selling a product as an affiliate marketer is to choose your product wisely! I can’t emphasize that enough. First of all you want a product that you at least know something about, and even better yet consider yourself a fan of (or consumer, if it’s a product) the product so you can honestly promote it. Believe me the sincerity will show through when you must create sales copy or write articles for this product. The other important thing to consider when choosing a product is find a product that has a “built-in” demand already! You can’t force people to buy something they don’t want or need, so choose carefully what you will promote. They way to do this is to find the products “gravity” once you log into Clickbank, which is a number ranging from zero to several hundred depending on the popularity of the product at the moment. This number changes frequently, so choose one that is at least 80-100 so you know there’s a market ready to buy. This will make promoting the product much easier!

Once you have chosen a product you like, that has a somewhat decent gravity, you’re almost halfway there! Go to the “pitch page” of the product and make sure it appears to be a professionally done site, and if so, signup for the product. Once you sign up for their affiliate program you must create what’s called a “hop link” – which can be done easily by clicking on the “create hoplink” link in Clickbank for the product you have chosen. This will open in a new window, and you simply copy and paste this link into a text document. The format will be like this: http://xxxxx.myproduct.hop.clickbank.net (where xxxxx is your clickbank ID, and the myproduct is the clickbank ID of the product you are selling). Of course in order to get your Clickbank ID (also called your “nickname”) you must sign up with Clickbank first. This costs $50, but it’s well worth as you will soon be a wealthy internet marketer, right?

Now comes the part where you must learn a little bit about Internet Marketing – sounds tough but you don’t need a big Einstein brain for this, really! Once you have your affiliate link, you need a way to get the link in front of as many eyeballs as possible, preferably through your website. You can either: 1) buy a domain name relevant to your product, and forward this name to your

affiliate link or 2) buy a domain name, setup a website, and start getting the content you need to provide value for your visitors. Now these ways both will work, so I’m not going to pontificate over the virtues of either one right now. Suffice it to say you have to do your own homework and decide which is best for you!

Either way you need traffic to the domain, and the ways to do that are varied – PPC advertising is the easiest, but can be very expensive. Writing articles and posting them on Ezine sites is another way which takes more time, but lasts much longer! You can also start up a blog, and write blogs that not only promote your product but have text links that will help you get traffic from the search engines. The best approach I’ve found is to do a combination of several ways so that you aren’t relying on one source for your traffic. However you get the traffic, you can’t make money as an affiliate marketer without it so become an expert on this part of internet marketing. If all of this sounds a bit foreign, check some other articles that myself and others have written here and other ezine hubs, and learn as much as you can. The fact is, if you can get people to click on your link you will make money. And that is the bottom line!

I’ve often told people in conferences around the country that marketing on the web is really easy, in fact I believe that most marketing advice can be summed up in just a few simple sentences so let’s take a look at 25 pieces of web based marketing advice that every business should follow, as would appear on Twitter.

Keep your website as simple and clean as possible. Remember your goal is to communicate with clients and funnel them into your business.
Analytics only matter if you care about them. How many people come to your website is irrelevant, what matters is how many reach your goal
Understand the basics of HTML. You can’t race a sports car if you don’t understand the basics of how an engine works, know your vehicle.
Web traffic is people not statistics, stop trying to collect them like trading cards and respect the people who take time to come visit you
Provide value to people and help them share your value with their friends, try make every word you type add to the community, not hurt it
Learn how to use PRWeb, FriendFeed, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, RSS and Google properly if you want to reach the masses.
Give your time to local charities and share your story on the web, encourage others in your area to be benevolent and watch traffic climb
It’s OK to be wrong. In fact being wrong is completely amazing, I’ve learnt more from being wrong than I ever managed to learn in school
Take the time to be interesting in your marketing and on your website, people will not follow or subscribe to you if you’re dull.
The most successful websites in the world are free but they make millions. Learn to master advertising venues and you’ll be rich forever.
Stop trying to build websites for Google, start trying to build websites for people who want to open their wallets to you, it’s common sense

A website is a work in progress, you don’t have to wait until its perfect to launch a new website you just have to know that it will grow
