This is my first video essay for Queer Global, and it is the project where my passion for storytelling and my day job finally became one and the same. I researched, wrote, filmed and edited it entirely myself. Justin Fashanu scored one of the greatest goals in English football history, became Britain’s first Black £1,000,000 footballer, and was the only top-tier player to come out as gay while still playing. The sport destroyed him for it. Thirty years later, there is still not a single openly gay player in the Premier League.

One of the last things I made at Mashroom was this explainer video for Scan.com, the UK’s largest diagnostic imaging platform. I conceptualised it, shot it and edited it entirely. The challenge was making a topic like joint wear and tear feel approachable and watchable without losing its substance, so every creative decision, from pacing to visual structure, was made with that balance in mind.
