Nifty Thrifty:
When life gives you lemons, make Lemon Shake-ups!
     2 cups sugar
     1 cup water
     1 cup fresh lemon juice

     Combine water and sugar in saucepan.
     Boil for 5 minutes.
     Cool, then add lemon juice.

     To make a lemon shake-up, add 1/4 c. of syrup to 1 glass of water with ice.
     Shake or stir to mix. Add a lemon wedge.
     Store syrup in the refrigerator. It should last for at least 2 months.

Huzzah! Thanks to a lead from @blankenflowers on Twitter, I found the problem in a completely different plugin, which got affected by Clean-Contact and set up a couple of redirects without telling me.

On a tangent, check out her site Blankenship’s Greenhouses and Garden Center, especially if you are in the Michiana area. I checked it out when she tweeted me, and methinks I need to take a field trip next time I’m in the South Bend area…

Even the some of the fans (called Cranks) get into the swing of things (pun fully intended) and act the part. Since cigarettes as we know them didn’t exist in 1858, those players and fans who are smokers switch to cigars or pipes. Since I’m allergic to cigarette smoke, this is great for me. Cigars are just smelly but don’t bother me otherwise, and I actually find pipe smoke pleasant.

From the gameplay angle, I find these games much more interesting to watch than modern baseball. A striker is out if the ball is caught on the fly or caught on one bound. There is no stealing bases or leading off, and people cheer for any good strike, hurl, or catch, no matter which team is at bat. If any player makes any violations, the umpire charges them a twenty-five cent fine, to be paid on the spot. This is one of the most fun parts of the game to watch. I have reason to believe that every member of our team keeps a roll of quarters in his pocket every game.

In history, there were ladies’ teams as well as mens’. I don’t know of any local ladies’ teams around here, but if I had the means, I’d love to start one. I even have a name picked out: The Valpo Vixens! Ah, that’s just a fantasy, though. Assuredly, though, I’d join a ladies’ team in a heartbeat if I found one close by.

The Hitch Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy has a few things to say on the subject of towels…

“A towel, it says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. Partly it has great practical value – you can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapours; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Kakrafoon; use it to sail a mini raft down the slow heavy river Moth; wet it for use in hand-to- hand-combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or to avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (a mindboggingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can’t see it, it can’t see you – daft as a bush, but very ravenous); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough.

More importantly, a towel has immense psychological value. For some reason, if a strag (strag: non-hitch hiker) discovers that a hitch hiker has his towel with him, he will automatically assume that he is also in possession of a toothbrush, face flannel, soap, tin of biscuits, flask, compass, map, ball of string, gnat spray, wet weather gear, space suit etc., etc. Furthermore, the strag will then happily lend the hitch hiker any of these or a dozen other items that the hitch hiker might accidentally have “lost”. What the strag will think is that any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through, and still knows where his towel is is clearly a man to be reckoned with.”
