Ada beberapa jenis printer yang saat ini banyak beredar di pasaran. Printer ink jet pertama kali muncul pada tahun 1980-an dan menggunakan tinta untuk mencetak hasil output ke kertas. Ketika pertama muncul, printer jenis ink jet mengedepankan teknik cetak warna sehingga banyak digemari pemakainya. Hasil pencetakan printer ink jet lebih halus daripada printer jenis dot matrix meskipun ongkos pembelian tinta biaya lebih mahal. Dari sisi teknologi, ada beberapa teknik yang dikembangkan printer ini dalam melakukan pencetakaan. Yang paling populer adalah teknik DDD atau drop on demand. Teknologi ini menyemprotkan titik-titik ke atas kertas melalui nozzle atau lubang pipa yang sangat kecil. Panas yang dihasilkan dapat membuat gelembung-gelembung tinta sehingga semakin panas akan semakin menekan tinta ke nozzle yang ditentukan dan tercetak ke atas kertas. Contoh printer jenis ink jet adalah Epson Stylus 300, Canon BJ 1000 SP, Canon BJC 2100 SP, HP Deksjet 500 dan lain-lain.

Laserjet
Laser jet merupakan jenis printer yang paling bagus ualitasnya daripada dua jenis printer sebelumnya yaitu dot matrik dan ink jet. Alat pencetaknya tidak menggunakan tinta atau pita melainkan menggunakan serbuk toner dan pencetakannya menggunakan infra merah. Disamping kualitas pencetakan yang bagus, printer jenis ini juga menawarkan kecepatan pencetakaan yang tinggi. Bahkan mesin yang tergolong kelas rendah dari golongan printer laserjet inipun masih memiliki kecepatan lebih tinggi dibandingkan printer dot matrik dan printer ink jet. Meskipun memiliki hasil pencetakan yang paling bagus dibandingkan yang lain, harga printer ini jauh lebih mahal dari dari lain lain belum lagi ditambah harga toner yang juga mahal.
