A chord ideally should have at least 3 notes which are the root or first note, the third note and the fifth note. Now you have to build the chord on the fretboard but before doing that first we have to identify which notes are the first, the third and the fifth notes. Let’s start with the first rule of the major scale which is the Natural Scale formula. You’ve probably learned this scale already:

This is the famous do-re-mi-fa-sol-la-ti-do you learned in the primary school. But what does it have to do with the guitar chords chart we’re going to make? Do represents the first note or the root note (C), re represents the second note (D), and so on and so on. The numbers at the bottom are the fix intervals between 2 consecutive notes. 1 means one full step and 1/2 means a half step. On your guitar, each fret has a value of 1/2 step so to make a whole step distance you have to shift a note by two frets. You have to know the 1-1-1/2-1-1-1-1/2 by heart because this is the key to build a major scale. Also remember that only E to F and B to C have a half step distance, the other consecutive notes will have one full step distance.

Now since we are going to build the A Major Guitar Chords Chart we will have to reshuffle the do-re-mi-fa-sol-la-ti-do above so it starts from A note instead of C note:

The notes group above don’t follow the 1 – 1 – 1/2 – 1 – 1 – 1 – 1/2 formula so we will make a quick correction. The actual interval between B and C is a half step so to make it one full step we need to raise the C note by a half step. This will turn the C into C sharp or C#. For the same reason we will have to raise the F and G by a half step so F will be F# and G will be raised to G# to fit in the A Major scale. Here is the corrected A Major Scale:

Can you see the difference? Now we will start building the A Major guitar chords chart. As explained earlier for the major chords we need to take the first, third and fifth notes from the scale which are A, C# and E. Look at the guitar fretboard picture above. String #6 (the thickest one) has already been tuned in E and string #5 has been tuned in A so we don’t touch both of them. The fourth string is tuned in D. This note doesn’t belong to the A Major chord so you have to change it to the closest note which is E. To alter D to E you need to press the string two frets away because D to E distance is one full step or two frets on your fretboard. For the same reason you need to change the third string from G (doesn’t belong to the A Major chord) to A by pressing the string at the second fret. The second string is tuned in B. We have to shift it to C# by pressing it at the second fret. We don’t have to fret the first string as it is already tuned in E. Here is the A Major chord looks like on your guitar:

Barre chords (or bar chords) are not easy to play but with patience and exercise you will be able to play them correctly. Never give up because once you pass thru this obstacle playing guitar chords will be a lot easier.

Alternative guitar tuning makes your guitar sound different because the guitar itself is designed to follow the EADGBE standard tuning. There are many ways to tune your guitar but I’ll try to group them together here:

Open Tunings

Open guitar tuning allows your guitar to produce a chord without pressing the fretboard. Basically the strings are tuned to form the triad, which consist of 3 different notes in a chord. This method is commonly found in slide guitar tuning where the player bars all the strings on one fret and slide the bar to change melody or chords.

Drop Tunings

Drop tuning follows the same pattern as found in the standard tuning except the sixth string is always tuned one full step lower than it’s supposed to be. The most popular drop tuning is the Drop D which is derived from the standard tuning but instead having the 6th string tuned in E it as dropped one step to D. Returning back to the standard tuning is easy as you only need to rise the 6th string from D to E.

Modal Tunings

Modal tuning refers to a set of notes found in a scale. The most popular modal tuning is probably the open Dsus4 which is tuned to DADGAD. Unlike the open and drop tunings, modal tuning doesn’t have the 3rd note in it.

There are some negative sides of alternative guitar tunings. Since some strings can be tuned higher than the standard specs they can warp your guitar neck. A guitar that is tuned to this alternate tuning can also fall out of tune easily compared to one with standard tuning.

Bass Guitar Tuning

Electric bass guitar is normally tuned one octave lower than the lowest (in terms of pitch) four strings of an electric guitar. Four-string bass will follow the E-A-D-G standard tuning whilst 5-string bass has a low-B additional string so the tuning shall follow the B-E-A-D-G tuning.

Six-string electric bass guitars have their own standard tuning. Whilst they also have 6 strings like the guitars, the standard tuning for them is B-E-A-D-G-C.

Guitar Tuning Tips

- Guitar can go out of tune faster than you think. The best way to tune your guitar is always tune up.

- Stretch new strings as you tune them to pitch.

- Use guitar tuner like tuning fork or digital guitar tuner to tune your low E string and train your ears by tuning the other strings to the tuned one.

- Guitar tuning software can be found easily for free. Just type “online guitar tuning” or “online guitar tuner” into your internet browser and you’ll find them easily. We also provide them here, one of them can be easily found on the sidebar or this blog.

What is the difference between electric guitar strings, classical guitar strings and acoustic guitar strings? Basically they should follow the same guitar tuning standard which has been explained above. What make the differences are the guitar strings materials and the guitar string gauges. Classical guitars for example have thicker strings compared to the electric and acoustic guitar strings, and are made of nylon. On the other hand both acoustic and electric guitar strings may share the same materials but they are different in gauge numbers.

Can we use cheap guitar strings? I personally don’t like them because their playability is poor – if you like to bend the strings you’ll see what I meant – and the sustain doesn’t last long. Try to use one in your electric guitar, the high E for example and listen to the sound quality it produces. Cheap guitar strings normally don’t generate good quality of sound, be it the sound volume or sustain and if you are playing lead guitar with it you’ll regret you have it in your strings.

Memorizing the guitar string notes setting will help you finding other notes across the fretboard. Start with the basic and you’ll find less problems in your future guitar journey.

What about bass guitar strings tuning? Four-string bass is similar to the six-string guitar minus the first and second strings so it should follow the same tuning. Five-string bass however has an additional low-B string, which string is thicker than the low-E string and has lower frequency compared to the low-E string.

Easy Guitar Chords Chart – A Major

]]> Guitar chords chart can sometimes be confusing, especially when you are looking for diminished chords chart. Whilst other basic guitar chords are relatively easy to figure out and memorized, diminished 7 chords can be named with 4 different names for a single chord shape. A beginning guitarist may find it difficult to determine what the root note of that particular chord as well as placing the diminished chords in the chords progression. Unlike the power chords that can be played safely because they don’t have minor or major indicator note (missing the third note), a diminished chord is most of the time used for the 7th note on the scale only. If you are playing in C for example than the diminished chord can be applied on the B, being the 7th note on the C major scale.

OK, enough frightening words. Let us see some examples below:

Why does one guitar fretboard chart have four different names? To answer this question we first have to understand the concept of the natural chords or major chords:

C Major Scale: C – D – E – F – G – A – B – C
F# Major Scale: F# – G# – Bb – B – C# – D# – F – F#
A Major Scale: A – B – C# – D – E – F# – G# – A
Eb Major Scale: Eb – F – G – Ab(= G#) – Bb – C – D – Eb

The major chord normally consists of triad notes which are the first or root note, the third and the fifth notes. C major chord for example has a triad of C, E and G.

C Major Chord: C – E – G
F# Major Chord: F# – Bb – C#
A Major Chord: A – C# – E
Eb Major Chord: Eb – G – Bb

A true diminished chord (hence different from diminished 7 chord) has only three notes like the triad of the major chords above, however the third and fifth notes are flat notes (lowered by a half step or one fret on your guitar fretboard). See this picture for better idea:

Based on the formula above here are the triad of diminished chords above:

C Dim Chord: C – Eb – Gb(F#)
F# Dim Chord: F# – A – C
A Dim Chord: A – C – Eb(D#)
Eb Dim: Eb – Gb(F#) – A

To form a diminished 7 chord the 6th note is added so there will be 4 notes in the chord now. Go find out the 6th note of each chord in the major chord section again:

C Major Scale: C – D – E – F – G – A – B – C
F# Major Scale: F# – G# – Bb – B – C# – D#(Eb) – F – F#
A Major Scale: A – B – C# – D – E – F#(Gb) – G# – A
Eb Major Scale: Eb – F – G – Ab(G#) – Bb – C – D – Eb

Now we can add these notes to make dim7 chords from dim chords we made earlier:

C Dim7 Chord: C – Eb – Gb(F#) – A
F# Dim7 Chord: F# – A – C – D#(Eb)
A Dim7 Chord: A – C – Eb(D#) – F#(Gb)
Eb Dim7 Chord: Eb – Gb(F#) – A – C

Can you see that actually all these 4 different Dim7 chords share the same notes? Let’s go back to the guitar chords chart above:

Let’s say I name it Adim7. We know that we can transpose a chord to another one by shifting the shape across the fretboard. If for example I want to make a Cdim7 chord and I don’t believe all the theories above I can just shift it by 3 frets higher because A to C distance is one and a half steps which is 3 frets on my fretboard. This is the result:

As you can see from the chart above the chord is still representing the same notes but in different voicing. Move up again another 3 frets and you will have another new voicing from the same notes.

Diminished chords are not played as often as the basic guitar chords but if you know how to use them they can really enhance your guitar playing. If you just start learning basic guitar scales like the pentatonic scales boxes – commonly used for blues guitar chords – you probably don’t need these dim chords, unless you are interested in other genre like jazz.
