Partnering with Property managers to Reduce Treatment Costs

Bed Bug Central recently conducted a study that evaluated the use of Temprid and Demand as the liquid residual used in a bed bug treatment protocol as well as the effect of using property maintenance staff for manual labor during a bed bug treatment on efficiency and effectiveness of treatment. When the study was designed it was intended to be performed on all levels of bed bug infestation but the property that agreed to participate in the study was found to have widespread, low level bed bug infestations. Therefore, all units in this study were low level bed bug infestations (less then 20 bugs found on the initial service).

In this study we achieved control using Temprid as our liquid residual treatment in an average of 3.23 services compared with an average of 3.00 services using Demand. We did find more bugs in the Temprid group (43 total bugs in 13 initial services) compared with the Demand group (7 bugs in 11 initial services) but all were low level infestations. We also found that we did not gain any efficiencies or effectiveness when a trained bed bug technician works with property maintenance personnel (98.8 technician minutes on the initial service, 51.9 minutes on the 1st follow-up) compared with two trained technicians performing the job (196.7 technician minutes on the initial service, 91.8 minutes on the 1st follow-up).

The results of the liquid residual study suggest that when we compared using Temprid or Demand for our liquid residual pesticide, we achieve control in the same amount of time. This study also suggests that our original theory that having two trained technicians perform a service will increase efficiencies and effectiveness may not be true since we achieved the same amount of effectiveness with only one technician and a person on site to help assist with manual labor.

Future questions to be evaluated:

As a liquid residual in a bed bug treatment protocol, is Temprid no more effective than Demand or does the liquid residual treatment play little to no effect in a bed bug treatment?

Would having manual labor be present on a bed bug service reduce the cost for a management company while achieving the same level of effectiveness and efficiency?

Research is currently being conducted to indentify the reasons behind these findings.

Healthcare Environmental Services Begin Bed Bug Report

Healthcare Environmental Services Begin Bed Bug Report

As bed bugs infestations continue to rise and news prevalence increases, the healthcare industry can no longer ignore the elephant-in-the-room. The American Society for Healthcare Environmental Services (ASHES) and a pest management firm have partnered to create a white paper to answer questions and address bed bug concerns related to the healthcare industry.

“Concern about bed bugs has grown steadily over the past decade alongside the bed bugs resurgence,” said ASHES Executive Director Patti Costello. “We asked Orkin to provide some insight to help our members better understand the practical issues and solutions surrounding these pests.”

The report will be distributed at the Annual ASHES Annual Conference & Technical Exhibition in Reno, Nevada on Sept. 21 and 22. The report will then be available for download at www.ashes.org.

About ASHES

The American Society for Healthcare Environmental Services (ASHES) is the premier professional association for environmental services, housekeeping, waste management and textile care professionals in the healthcare industry. ASHES provides educational programs, opportunities to network with peers on a national level, recognition for personal and professional achievements, as well as affiliation and collaboration with the American Hospital Association on public policy and advocacy issues related to environmental services. See www.ashes.org for more

ClimbUp Insect Interceptors are discussed in this article published by PCT Magazine. The article focuses on the commercially available ClimbUp Insect Interceptor device, along with other passive bed bug traps designed to capture bed bugs.

Dr. Changlu Wang, a researcher at Rutgers University Department of Entomology, along with Timothy Gibb and Gary Bennett of Purdue university conducted a study testing the effectiveness of these Bed Bug Monitors. The research team concluded that Bed bug interceptors are more effective than visual inspections for determining the presence/absence of bed bugs and estimating bed bug numbers.

With “Social Networking” and “Web 2.0” becoming household terms these days, it’s no surprise that Protect-A-Bed elected to host its Bed Bug Q&A on Twitter.com. On June 23rd, 2009, Protect-A-Bed, the nations leading manufacturer of bedding protection and bed bug mattress encasements, invited entomologists Richard Cooper and Jeff White of Bed Bug Central to answer user generated questions about bed bugs.

If you are not familiar with Twitter, you should be. Twitter has quickly become the new face of Public Relations and marketing for businesses and brands that want to leverage a free, easy-to-use technology. Twitter is a service for friends, family, and co–workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question: What are you doing?

During this Q&A, Rick Cooper and Jeff White answered users questions about bed bugs via @protect_a_bed, ranging from “How should I inspect a hotel room for bed bugs?” to “With heat, what temperature is required to kill bed bugs?” Sounds simple enough, but try answering that in 140 characters or less! It’s not as easy as it sounds, but Rick and Jeff did a great job in answering the questions and providing great internet resources that are available for bed bug information.

Visit search.twitter.com for a full recap and transcript of the event.
Scientists use bed bugs' own chemistry against them

Scientists at Ohio State University have discovered that combining bed bug's own chemical signals with a common pest control agent makes the treatment more effective in killing bed bugs.

Researchers found that when they sprayed bed bug infested areas with a synthetic version of their own alarm pheramone, the bugs are more likely to walk through areas treated with dessicant dusts, which will kill the insects by making them highly susceptible to dehydration.

As bed bugs continue to develop resistance to traditional pesticides, treatment with dessicant dusts is considered favorable, as long as the bugs cross treated surfaces.

"Once we put the alarm pheromone in the places bed bugs hide, boom, they instantly started moving around and moving through the desiccant dust," said Joshua Benoit, lead author of the study and a doctoral candidate in entomology studying under David Denlinger at Ohio State University.

"Consistently, the addition of a pheromone blend to desiccant dust was more effective than adding either chemical by itself or by using desiccant dust alone."

Visit Ohio State's website to read the full article and press release.

This workshop will be held at the Lancaster County Extension Center, 444 Cherrycreek Road on May 21st, 2009. While the workshop is open to the public, it is targeted toward landlords and property managers.

"Landlords and property managers need to be able to recognize the problem and take subsequent management tactics, including thorough treatment by a pest control company," said Barbara Ogg, extension educator.

This workshop comes on the heels of the EPA's National Bed Bug Summit which was held in mid-april in Arlington, VA.
Non-Chemical Technology introduced for Bed Bugs

(1888PressRelease) February 04, 2009 - VENTURA, CA – The old saying “Sleep tight don’t let the bed bugs bite” isn’t just an old wife’s tale. It’s true. Bed bugs have once again reached epidemic proportion in the United States with thousands of cases being reported from coast to coast and in Hawaii in houses, apartments, college dorms, luxury and standard hotels, cruise ships, aircraft and even taxis.

Until now, pest control companies have relied upon toxic chemicals and powders that often have to be applied directly to mattresses, bedding and into structures often in multiple treatments, exposing people to potentially harmful chemicals. But now, a new, patented pesticide-free technology has been introduced that has proven 100% effective in laboratory and on-the-job testing: ThermaPureHeat® (www.thermapure.com).

“All organisms have a specific thermal death point. Bed bugs and their eggs die at sauna-like temperatures of around 130 degrees,” says David Hedman, CEO and patent holder of ThermaPureHeat. “Instead of using toxic chemicals, licensed ThermaPureHeat technicians direct heated air from clean burning commercial propane and/or custom-built infrared electric heaters to a single room or an entire structure where it penetrates into the cracks and crevices where bed bugs hide.”

After just a few hours, the ThermaPureHeat treatment -- which is perfectly safe to both humans, the structure and its contents -- not only kills bed bugs and their eggs, but it also serves to effectively pasteurize the treated space by killing or neutralizing other biological organisms, including allergens and fungi.

ThermaPureHeat can be applied to a single room or an entire structure. The beauty of heat versus other technologies is that no dangerous chemicals are placed into the structure. Instead, ThermaPureHeat penetrates the entire treated area, including all of the cracks and crevices where bed bugs may be hiding and where chemicals can’t effectively reach. Chemical treatments require direct contact on the bug and the eggs in order to be effective, which is why the toxic chemicals normally need to be applied multiple times. ThermaPureHeat has been independently tested and proven to be 100% effective with a single application.

“The cutting-edge technology that will be the go-to solution in the future is heat,” says Richard Cooper, technical director of Bed Bug Central (www.bedbugcentral.com) in New Jersey. “Relying on pesticides alone is not a wise thing. There’s (pesticide) tolerance, and severe resistance among bedbugs. Heat is the most efficient and effective way to address bedbugs in most structures.”

Public Education Vital
Experts agree, the number one reason for the rapid spread of bed bugs in the US is simply a lack of education and information. Poverty and poor hygiene are not the cause.

“Bed bugs are indiscriminate. People are bringing bed bugs back with them when they travel for pleasure or take domestic and international business trips,” says Dr. Michael R. Linford, Ph.D., president of TPE Associates, which licenses the ThermaPureHeat technology to other companies in North America.

A bed bug bite usually isn’t immediately visible on humans, which is why people might not even realize for several days or even weeks that they’ve been bitten. It normally takes multiple bites for skin to show signs of the attack.

That’s why people are urged to check out their bedding at home and when they travel for any signs of bed bug presence. Look for bugs themselves, as well as any grouping of dark brown or black spots, including those that might smear slightly rather than wipe off with a damp washcloth.

“Don’t assume that just because you are staying in a five-star hotel that the bed you’re sleeping in is free of bed bugs,” adds Hedman. “We’ve recently performed work for some very well-known hotels that have been impacted by this problem. Any traveler may unknowingly be carrying bed bugs or their eggs in their luggage or belongings. This problem certainly has nothing to do with the excellent way these properties maintain their rooms.”

About ThermaPure
ThermaPureHeat® is a patented, EPA-approved, non-chemical heat technology that when applied to a structure or portion of a structure by a trained technician kills insects, such as bed bugs, termites, cockroaches and their eggs, and improves the overall indoor air quality by eliminating allergens and odors. ThermaPureHeat has also been proven effective in sanitizing many species of mold, bacteria, parasites and viruses, and is often used to help repair flood or water damage.

The ThermaPureHeat process is licensed by TPE Associates of Ventura, California to companies around the world. Currently, more than 40 companies throughout North America been granted licenses to use ThermaPureHeat.
Bedtime Worries Put to Rest
Please click here to read this article about bed bugs on the San Diego State campus in California.

The article, Bedtime Worries Put to Rest, was an informative article about bed bugs, and there were a few important things that should be communicated about this article.

In this article, "Benita Mann, manager of custodial and maintenance services for the OHA, said there hasn't been any known bed bug problem in campus housing for some time." Whether or not a college has a problem is not very important at this time, the important thing is communication about how to prepare and being proactive about an infestation if it is reported.

On a negative note, this article discussed bed bugs being present on 'egg chairs' and that the egg chairs were apparently the only items treated. This may indicate that the people making treatment decisions may not truly understand bed bugs, because bed bugs are commonly found on couches, beds, etc. and treating the entire area that the bugs were found in would have been a better treatment approach.

Public eduaction is a critical component of bed bug management plans on University campuses. Even though they may not have bed bug problems right now, it doesn't mean one wouldn't pop up in the near future. Residence Life and students should be educated so they can identify an infestation as early as possible, which is one of the best courses of action.

In reference to the student health services, the doctor quoted is correct in saying that to identify a bed bug infestation based on bite symptoms alone can be misleading. However, understanding some common characteristics of bed bug bites, such as rows, clusters, red bumps, etc. appearing in the morning, can help raise concern and stimulate an inspection of a students room.

The student health services doctor also did not note that bed bugs can have a very severe emotional impact on people who suffer infestations, and usually those who have not suffered through a bed bug infestation do not understand the impact that one can have on someone. However, he was correct in mentioning that they are not vectors of disease.

Good night, sleep tight, don't let the bird mites bite your flesh

By Kevin Post

In more than two decades of writing this column, I've heard a lot about the problems wildlife can cause when it invades the home. Readers have asked me how to handle mice, wasps, bats, ladybugs, raccoons, birds, spiders, cave crickets, squirrels, fleas, snakes and more - and I've dealt with many of those in my own home.

But this summer, a young woman came to me with a new threat, a creature I knew about but never realized could afflict people: bird mites. These routinely infest birds and are a major health hazard for them.

Chickadees nested in a protected area adjacent to her air conditioner outside the window of her Brigantine apartment. It was pretty cool getting a close-up view of chickadees raising their brood. But when the fledglings took flight and the chickadees abandoned the nest, the bird mites that thrived by biting the birds suddenly went looking for a new blood meal.

Laptops, textbooks and new jeans are among the must-haves for college students heading back to campus, but the most common back-to-school item may well be the blood-sucking bedbug. Colleges around the U.S. are reporting a scourge of the little buggers infesting dormitories, and the problem only gets worse when they hitchhike on their coed hosts going from room to room.

“U.S. college campuses are really the perfect setting,” noted entomologist Richard Cooper told Matt Lauer on TODAY Friday. “We have large numbers of students coming from all over the country and, in fact, all over the world every semester, and it’s inevitable that somebody is going to bring bugs with them. And once the bugs are introduced, they can rapidly spread because of all the interactions students have visiting each other’s rooms.”

From feeding first on cave bats, it’s likely that the small, bloodsucking arthropods evolved to prefer the blood of human cave dwellers. From there, they hid in our clothing and tools as we brought them into tents and houses – and nowadays into condos, hotel rooms, cruise ships, mass transit and college dorms. The school system reports that children are bringing bedbugs home with them from the classroom. Click here for the full article.

Cooper was one of the first entomologists to predict the exponential spread of bed bugs in 2003. Since that time, bed bugs have spread throughout the US and are a growing problem.

As the problem with bed bugs has increased so has research in the academic community along with an increased number of products designed to prevent and detect bed bugs. Cooper was also involved in the development of the leading mattress encasement for bed bugs produced by Protect-A-Bed. Encasements allow individuals affected by bed bugs from throwing away their mattresses and box springs as well as serving as an early detection method. This past August, Cooper presented new research regarding mattress encasements and the differences between the encasements on the market to the National Entomological Society of America in San Diego, CA.

A letter to the Omsbudman of the Washington Post

This is a letter written by Richard Cooper expressing his concern regarding an article written by David Segal. In the opinion of bed bug central, raising the publics awareness about bed bugs is among the most important steps in trying to slow down the continued spread of this difficult insect.

While we understand that at times bed bugs can be overexaggerated in the media, we feel that Mr. Segal's article misrepresents this problem in the opposite direction. We do, however, agree that it is important that reports of bed bugs be confirmed as there are other explanations for why people may suffer bites or bite-like symptoms.

Below is the letter sent by Richard Cooper to the Washington Post:

Dear Ms. Howell,

I am sending you this email in regards Mr. David Segal's recent article "Hmm. Tiny, Evil -- And Everywhere?". I'm sure that you have received your fair share of backlash regarding this article and until now I have told myself to just let it be. However, every few days I see this article show up via another media outlet and more recently I listened to Mr. Segal's interview on NPR's "On the Media" which finally compelled me to address the subject.

This is the first time that I have ever felt strongly enough about an article to respond to the source. I am writing you because I am shocked that this type of reporting would come out of the Washington Post. I would expect this from a media source that is not reputable, one that does not thoroughly research their topic, but not from the Washington Post. I apologize in advance if my comments are not conveyed as eloquently as they should be as I am writing this with a great deal of emotion.

I am an entomologist, and a recognized expert on the subject of bed bugs, however I am also an owner of a pest management firm in NJ, so based upon Mr. Segal's comments this makes me an unreliable source, as I have something to gain by over-exaggerating the "true" nature of bed bug activity in the US. I can assure you that this assumption would be inaccurate. I was interviewed by Daniela Deane for the companion article "Yes. Tiny, Evil - - and In my Bed", that appeared along side of Mr. Segal's article. I believe this was intended to be a point/counterpoint pair of articles unfortunately Ms. Deane's article seemed to be positioned more as a personal account rather than a counter point. I am disappointed in the Washington Post and feel that Mr. Segal's article misrepresents the true state of affairs about bed bugs.

Although Mr. Segal's article certainly cast a dark cloud over the pest management industry's ethics, that is not what has stimulated me to write to you. More importantly than the pest management industry's image is the false message that this article sends out to the American public regarding a very serious and widespread problem with bed bugs.

I'm not going to go into a rant about how emotionally devastating this pest can be to those who suffer from an infestation, I get the idea that Mr. Segal understands this point. However, I am at a loss for why Mr. Segal is so driven to convince the public that the resurgence of bed bugs is grossly overstated? I am offended that Mr. Segal has taken the position that anyone associated with the pest management industry is a biased source and cannot be viewed as credible. I can certainly understand that there are some that may inflate or exaggerate the topic for their own personal gain, but does he honestly believe that there are not credible sources out there that have a differing opinion other than his own?

So he uses Dr. Richard Pollack's quotes in a manner that supports his argument but not Dr. Michael Potter'sNY DOH Statistics to show that the majority of complaints were not confirmed cases of bed bugs, but does he try to inquire or understand why this might be the case, there are explanations for this. Even without the explanations, doesn't an increase from zero inquiries in 2003 to 500 confirmed cases in 2006 seem a bit alarming? Why did Mr. Segal, stop at a single statistic? What about other municipalities such as Cincinnati, Las Vegas, San Francisco, or parts of Kentucky that are reeling from bed bugs? Why not look at what is happening globally in Canada, the UK, Australia and other countries? There are a number of International experts that are government officials that could have been interviewed, are they also not credible? Why not look at the increase in confirmed samples that are being sent into Extension entomologists to get hard statistics on the increase in bed bug activity?

Mr. Segal has a legitimate point, regarding, misdiagnosis, which he illustrates well through Dr. Pollack's comments about many samples being received that are not bed bugs, or Jay Nixon, discussing samples that turn out to be nothing more than lint? These stories are not new to the pest control industry we have dealt with "mystery bites" and delusionary parisitosis for decades, but now things have changed, and if you do suddenly begin waking up with itchy red welts, there is no question that bed bugs should be among the causes that you try to at least rule out. It is wrong for pest control companies to treat a property for bed bugs when a problem has not been confirmed and I would certainly expect that while some companies may do this, it is not representative of the industry as a whole. Perhaps, the article would have served the public better, if Mr. Segal suggested that his readers confirm the problem before they begin spending money to solve what they suspect are bed bugs. Prior to 2004, presentations on bed bugs at the Entomological Society of America's annual meetings were non existent. In 2004 the first bed bug symposium was held, this past December approximately 30 presentations were given on the subject of bed bugs at the annual ESA meeting in San Diego.

Prior to 2004, there was not a single research program in the United States studying bed bugs, now there are at least six and the number is growing. Among them, some of the most noted Urban Entomology programs in the country, to include the Univ. of Florida, Univ. of Kentucky, NC State, Purdue Univ., Virginia Tech etc. I guess the research community that is actively studying this pest cannot be viewed as a credible source either?

It seems that anyone having a differing opinion than that of Mr. Segal's is either discounted or positioned as unreliable. I could go on and on, the point is that the resurgence of bed bugs is a very real issue and while there may be some misleading statistics there are many others that are not. It doesn't take that much effort to sift through what is real and what is exaggerated to learn the truth. Obviously, this was not Mr. Segal's intent, he had a story that he wanted to tell and he told it.

The United States as well as many other parts of the world are in fact experiencing a very significant and serious increase in bed bug activity. Like many new phenomena, half of the battle to stop the unrestricted spread of an emergent problem is to raise public awareness so that people recognize the problem early on and can do something about it before it gets out of control and is disseminated further. It is the lack of public awareness regarding bed bugs that is likely to be responsible for the rapid increase and dramatic spread that we have witnessed over the past 5-6 years.

As I mentioned before, I feel that Mr. Segal's article misrepresents the true state of affairs about bed bugs and serves as an obstacle to the effort of raising public awareness which is desperately needed to help slow down the spread of this challenging pest.

I would look forward to a reply.

Best regards,

Bed Bugs Uncovered

Reviewed By Bart Jones

After being virtually extinct since World War II, bed bugs have reappeared in the last 5 years at an alarming rate across the United States. In response to this resurgence, "Bed Bugs Uncovered" attempts to provide basic information on bed bugs, how to prevent them and what to do if you were unfortunate enough to find bed bugs in your home. It is unclear who the author of this text is, the book that we purchased states that it was written by Chris Jones. Subsequently, the same book was seen on the internet on a different website that appears to indicate that the book was written by Gretha Filak. Regardless of who the author actually is the text offers little insight that is not readily available on quality web sites.

Although some of the information presented is accurate, there are inaccurate statements and surprising remarks made throughout the publication. One example of such a remark is "In fact, they (bed bugs) would prefer to live in a home that is clean anyways." At this moment there's no research that indicates whether bed bugs prefer clean or dirty environments, and if you speak with industry experts they will all agree that personal hygiene and tidiness have nothing to do with the chance that you experience an infestation of bed bugs. In addition to inaccurate information and remarks, there are many typographical errors in the publication and the authors writing. style makes the book difficult to read. If you are looking for information on bed bug biology and behavior, there is an abundance of accurate information that can be found on many different trustworthy, university and trade websites.

Even though this publication does have some accurate information, it is not worth the money to have to sift through the misinformation to gain insight that can be found on free, quality websites.

In the fall of 2007, Richard Cooper conducted research into the leading bed bug mattress encasements. The research was presented to his fellow entomologists from around the United States at the Entomological Society of America’s annual meeting in December of 2007.

This video is a recreation of his speech to the Society and will provide you with a thorough understanding of mattress encasements and the research that was conducted comparing the effectiveness of a variety of commercially available encasements that are being marketed for use as a bed bug management tool.
