Rock the Look: Chrissy Teigen

The Sports Illustrated model and soon to be Mrs. John Legend, shined at the Grammy’s with her radiant glowing skin, effortless smokey eyes, and great hair. Her makeup artist Amy Hollier is here to give the step-by-step for recreating this “Best Dressed” celebs’ award-winning look, while Juan Carlos Maciques, Chrissy’s go-to hair guru and stylist at Rita Hazan Salon in NYC, provided us with a step-by-step explanation of how to recreate her 2012 Grammy hairstyle.

Let's start with the hair: Juan Carlos explained, “Given the dress, we opted for something upswept in front to compliment the high neck but gave her long cascading hair down her exposed back. Chic but sexy since she also wanted to feel the movement of hair.”

Step 1: Prep your hair with Phytovolume Actif Spray Volumizer and then blowout with a large round brush

Step 2: Use a medium-sized curling iron to add wave and texture throughout the head.

Step 3: Leave the front portion of your hair loose and pull the back into a high ponytail, then bring the front pieces back and pin into the ponytail in a very loose manner.

Step 4: Once hair is in place, finger brushed the hair back to create separation and depth and wrap any loose pieces around the ponytail to create a polished look.

“Chrissy’s look is ethereal and subtly sexy,” says Amy. “It’s a look you can easily recreate and wear all year round.” And here’s how!

It’s In the Eyes:

Step 1: First prime the entire eye area with Laura Mercier Eye Basics in “Wheat." Then softly blend Chanel Illusion D’ombre eyeshadow in “Illusoire” over the lids with your finger.

Step 2: To create Chrissy’s shimmery grey smokey eye, use the two darkest shades from Chanel’s Quadra Eyeshadow Palette “Enigma” on the lids. Use the lightest color in the palette to highlight the brow bone and inner corners of the eyes.

Step 3: Follow up with Diorshow Waterproof black mascara.

Step 4: Finish the eyes by painting a thin line along the lashline with Make Up For Ever’s Aqua Eyes liner in black. Under the lower lashes smudge in Chanel’s Long-Lasting Eyeliner in “Marine”.

Grammy Glow:

Step 1: Prime the skin with Mac Strobe Liquid Lotion followed by Dior’s Forever Foundation for flawless coverage.

Step 2: To brighten the eyes, use Lancome Effacernes Undereye Concealer. Finish the skin with a light dusting of Laura Mercier’s translucent setting powder.

Step 3: To add some color, swirl Tarte Amazonian clay 12-hour blush in “Amused” and “Flush” to the apples of the cheeks. Highlight all the high points on the face with Lorac TANtalizer Baked Bronzer.

Step 4: Lastly to give those gams a golden glow, apply Lorac TANtalizer Body Bronzing Luminizer.

For the Lips: Simply add a touch of Dior Addict Ultra-Gloss in Negligee Pink 256.

Makeup How to: Classic with a hint of Romance

The look featured a clean and luminous complexion with natural, rosy cheeks and a light Orchid Tint stained lips. The focus for Fall was on the eyes, which were kept dark, smoky and mysterious.

To achieve the Autumn/Winter 2012 kate spade new york look, the Jouer Cosmetics team prepped the models’ skin with Jouer Luminizing Moisture Tint, followed by the Age-Repairing Perfector to ensure extra coverage on targeted areas. Where needed, Jouer Cosmetics’ Age-Repairing Concealer was used to cover any blemishes or dark circles. For a dewy look, Age-Repairing Brightener was applied above the cheek bones and around the eyes. Mineral Face Powder was the final step for the face, setting the makeup and minimizing shine in the t-zone.

To create the light, smoky eye, Amaretto Powder Eyeshadow was the key component. The product was firstly used on the lower part of the eye lid. To smoke-out the look, Cappuccino Powder Eyeshadow was applied in the crease bringing drama to the eyes, yet still keeping it wearable. Noir Eye Definer was added to subtly sharpen the top and bottom eye lids followed by a sweep of Amaretto Powder Eyeshadow on the bottom lid to continue the smudged and smoky effect. Noir Mascara was lastly swept onto lashes completing the eyes and the brows were strengthened with Brow Definer to create a fuller look and frame the face.

Lastly, Rose Mineral Powder Blush was used on the apples of the cheeks. Blending outwards, the natural flush of the cheeks was accentuated. The look’s final touch was a pop of Orchid Tint on the lips, leaving a natural rose stain.

He mixed two neutral shades of Color Design Eyeshadow (Vintage & Chic) to create a subtle wash of color around the eyes and defined the eyes with dark brown eyeliner, which was carefully smudged and blended. One coat of Définicils Mascara in Brown created natural-looking lashes. Tarek applied Rouge In Love in Lasting Kiss with his finger and pressed the color onto the lips to pump up the model’s natural lip color.

New Home Scents: Escape to the Tropics with Bath & Body Works

I absolutely adore home fragrance, the rooms in your home should always smell good! Lately, I've been falling head over heels in love with the Bath & Body Works Candle collections. Since the scents are crafted by Slatkin & Co. it's no wonder. The newest collection the Tropical Collection truly sends your senses on an island escape.

My favorite of the bunch is Coconut Water, a rich tropical blend of coconut milk and sheer vanilla with subtle notes of pineapple and sparkling citrus. It's very clean smelling and would work perfectly anywhere in your home.

Coming in a very close second is Pink Sangria, a refreshing mix of zesty mandarin, crisp apple and sugared grapes and berries. This scent is sweet and upbeat, I would recommend it anywhere except the bedroom.

Touchable Valentine's Day Skin

Soft, silky, totally touchable skin is a Valentine's Day must have! Exfoliation is key here! You have to scrub yourself down to reveal softer smoother skin.

Fight Back Against Acne

It seems as though the skin on my chin and jawline has lost it's mind. I don't know exactly what caused it but it's breaking out like crazy and I'm on a mission to get it together, so I pulled out my acne fighting arsenal.

I cleanse with my regular Glo Therapeutic Conditioning Milk Cleanser and every other day I use my Clarisonic with the deep cleansing brush head. If the breakout is really bad I'll alternate cleansers and throw in the X Out by Proactiv cleanser. This cleanser is particularly strong so it's important to not over do it, but I love this product because it can be used as a spot treatment, cleanser, and a mask. If all this does nothing, I'll pull out the Salicylic Acid peel and do a treatment. To combat dryness I use my trusty MD Forte Replenish Hydrating Cream. As brown girls, we know even the tiniest pimple can leave a devastating dark mark that can last for months. Knock them out with Alpha Hydrox AHA Souffle 12% Glycolic Souffle.

Whether you call in a Beauty Balm, like the brands launching them in the US are doing or a Blemish Balm like they've been referred to in Asia it's very likely that you've been seeing them pop up all over the place. So let's chat a little about what these BB Creams actually do for your skin. Beauty Balm creams offer up good coverage for the skin while providing benefits for the skin, so think a treatment cream mixed with a foundation. The skin benefits you get will vary based on what brand you choose, but typically they are on the thicker side in texture and have some type of silicone in them for provide the perfect finish.

Beat Winter Dry Skin

Face: Mama Mio Clean Slate Cleanser is a paraben-free cleanser infuses skin with essential oils, firming proteins, pre- and pro-biotics and omegas to gently cleanse without over-drying, unbalancing or irritating skin. It's highly fragranced but luckily it doesn't irritate my sensitive skin, it actually smells like the spa. After cleansing my skin, I immediately apply cream. My favorite for right now is MD Forte Moisturizer, it's my when all else fails moisturizer.

Lips: Keeping your lips soft and smooth in the cold blistering weather can prove to be a little bit of a challenge, especially since you tend to go from dry heat, to the cold, to dry heat and back again. I always have a stick of lip balm on me at all times, my favorites are Yu-Be, Bliss Fabulips, and MoistStick. At night I always coat my lips with Waxelene, the petroleum jelly alternative.

Skin Expert Dominique Tinkler of OMIC Skincare provides tips on what foods to avoid when you have Dry Skin. Drinks like coffee and black tea dehydrate your internal tissues and skin. Most fried foods contain trans fats and hydrogenated oils which can often deplete levels of good fats and can lead to dry skin. Instead you should focus on drinking lots of water and eating foods with good fats (which will help to keep cell walls strong and prevent water loss) like avocado and olive oil as well as citrus and kiwi (the potassium they contain regulates the body’s water levels). Cabbage has sulfur which can help to prevent dry, irritated skin.

When I think Bobbi Brown Cosmetics I think easy to wear, subtle colors with a small amounts of shimmer here and there. Well, Bobbi Brown is amping up your look this spring with the release of her newest collection, Neons & Nudes. Bobbi says, "The most modern way to wear color is an accent on an otherwise nude face."

My favorite pieces from the Neons & Nudes Collection would have to be the lipsticks. They are highly pigmented and only require one swipe of color to get that POP! Valentine's Day Scent: Saffron James IPO

IPO in Hawaiian means “Sweetheart” and is the perfect scent to wear on Valentine's Day or give your loved one this Valentine’s Day! This is the 5th scent released from Saffron James.

The scent is very light and include notes of Violet, Moroccan Rose, Orange Blossom,
Tahitian Gardenia and Lemongrass. It doesn't seem to linger strongly like other scents, in fact you have to re-apply it several times throughout the day if you want continuing scent.

Here is a rule of thumb that I was reminded of while looking at photos of Tia Mowry at the Wendy Williams show, the start of your eyebrow should never go past the edge of your nostril. In the photo below, I've added in the lines so you can see exactly what I'm talking about.

As you can see in the above image her makeup artist extended her natural brow in too far past the line, resulting in a very unfortunate look. Thankfully, at the 2012 People's Choice awards she used a different makeup artist or something because her eyebrows do not look like a lightly waxed unibrow anymore.

Longer Lasting Manicure

Seems like gel manicures were all the rage in 2011 and I doubt it will die down anytime soon, but guess what? Gel manicures are not allowed at my job, remember I'm a nurse. Of course there are tons of people who break the rules and really it's not enforced but still. The head of Infection Control claims that even after hand washing gel manicures have been shown to hold onto bacteria. Now combine that with the cost and maintenance, plus the fact that it made my nails thinner after months of continued use I have sort of reserved gel manicures for vacations.

That's not to say that I don't like pretty well manicured nails. I have a tip that helps regular old nail polish stick better to nails, it's pretty simple too. Use an alcohol pad to remove any excess oil from the nail before applying any polish. If you don't have alcohol pads, a little bit of an acetone based nail polish remover on paper towel to each nail right before polishing will do the trick.
