I’m sure everyone knows about ICE SCRAMBLE! It’s that pink ice shavings with powdered milk and chocolate syrup on top that we often see in a cart in front of our schools before. It’s one of those food that our parents didn’t allow us to buy for hygienic purposes, along with sago, sweet corn, barbecue and other street foods. But for the heck of it, I’m one of those hard-headed kids that bought them once and enjoyed it, thankfully I’m still alive after all those bacteria and microorganisms lurking on those street foods.

Yesterday, I was looking for some sterling silver jewelry at the lower ground floor of SM North Edsa and saw long lines for a particular food cart. Yes, the lowly ice scramble has conquered the food carts. It’s called Icebreaker Scrambles, people will really line up for ice scramble because it’s cheap and clean.

Prices for Icebreaker Scrambles are 7, 10, 17 pesos, you also have the option to put additional toppings like extra powdered milk, mallows and rice crispies.

The ice scramble tastes yummy and reminded me of the childhood ice scramble I tasted, and I can be sure of food safety. I find the ice not thoroughly shaved though, I’d prefer a smoother consistency for the ice but overall, it’s one of those yummy treats that I can eat while having my leisure walk at the mall.

Fresh from Cebu! I have plenty of food and travel photos about Cebu. I miss the food, especially Casa Verde’s Brian’s Back Ribs. But more on that on my succeeding posts. We availed of the Family Room for Php 1680 per night, consists of 2 queen-sized bed. Initially, we also reserved another Double Room since we’re 7 in the group but after seeing the big Family Room, we asked if we can just avail the Family Room and pay for 3 extra beds and they agreed. More savings for us! The staff are very courteous and approachable.

On our last day, our flight back to Manila is at 5:30 am, we were worried that it might be difficult to hire a taxi that early so we asked them to call a taxi for us. True enough, 2 taxis are already waiting when we went downstairs and we even got a wake-up call from them without even asking.

There are some things that I don’t scrimp on, one of them is food and good kitchen utensils and cookwares. I’m not really into cooking but I can whip up a delicious meal when I’m in the mood. So having good quality utensils, pots and pans is one of my top priorities. Last December, I bought a Teflon frying pan because the Teflon coating in the old frying pan started to wear off and I was afraid of the Teflon dangers I’ve been reading. Little did I know that before its first use, Teflon coated pans and also cast iron cookwares should be “seasoned” before using for cooking. Yeah, I didn’t know this at first too but I’m writing this now so that you can do this on your newly bought Teflon cookwares and cast iron pans.

“Seasoning” means to treat the pan with oil to create, or rejuvenate, a nonstick surface. Cast iron pans traditionally require regular seasoning. But, with use and as Teflon-coated pans age, the surface may need to be seasoned to add to its life and effectiveness. Seasoning a Teflon-coated frying pan, or other Teflon-coated cookware, is fast and simple. eHow.com

How to season Teflon pans and cast iron pans:

1. Wash your Teflon pans or cast iron pans with soap and water using a soft sponge or cloth. Dry thoroughly.

2. Heat the pan in the stovetop on low setting for about 30 seconds.

3. Add a tablespoon of oil in the pan and carefully swirl to coat the pan’s surfaces.

4. Wipe the excess oil with paper towel or a clean cloth. You Teflon frying pan or cast iron cookware is ready to use!

Estrel’s Caramel Cakes is one of the few names whenever specialty cake suggestions are asked, along with Dulcelin’s Mango Torte which I love. And because of all the raves for Estrel’s Caramel Cakes, I ordered one for my mother’s birthday. I ordered one day in advance since their cakes are made to order. I ordered for their 8-inch round cake with caramel filling for Php 600. The person I talked to on the phone was nice enough to ask if I want to put a message on the cake for free, so I gladly asked to put a birthday note.

The dainty flowers at the center are adorable, makes me not want to slice the cake so that I won’t destroy them. The side part of the cake is laced with intricate lattice icing that makes the cake look so elegant. As expected from a freshly baked cake on the same date of purchase, it’s so soft when sliced.

Unfortunately, for someone who has a sweet tooth, I didn’t like the cake. Contrary to the raves of ALL the reviews in the Internet (I’ve never encountered negative review and mine might be the first), I think Estrel’s Caramel Cake was overhyped. My mother who likes chiffon cakes more also said that there’s nothing special about the cake. I expected a sinful sweet caramel but I didn’t see the difference in taste between the chiffon cake and the caramel icing.

Like:

- baked fresh, baked on the day of pick-up

- no preservatives added

- pretty and dainty cake design

- soft and melt-in-your-mouth chiffon cake

Dislike:

- lacks sweetness

- I can’t taste the caramel

- since it has no preservative, it expires the day after the date of purchase

Sometimes I think I have really weird tastebuds or maybe because of my pregnancy but for those who want to try Estrel’s Caramel Cakes, I copied their price list from the Facebook page.

Finally a food post! It is evident that Jeff and I love Persian food, our ultimate Persian food discovery is Shomal Kebabs and Curries but it’s admittedly so expensive and we can’t afford to dine there whenever we crave for some Persian food. Grilled Tomato is the answer for our Persian food cravings, it’s along Tomas Morato that’s why it’s near the office and the price is really affordable. The Beef Kebab meal that comes with iced tea is only Php 100.

There’s nothing special about the Beef Korma, just like any ordinary curry dishes. Our staple order is the Beef Kebab, moist and soft beef. Of course, our kebabs are not happy without these two sauces…

Grilled Tomato’s interior is simple, no fancy chairs and tables. Just plain good food, yes, that’s all a restaurant needs right. Their good food made them to be featured in various TV shows already such as MYX so food there is definitely a must try. The bulletin board also shows some happy feedback from satisfied customers.
