Now that the weather is warmer, we are getting more adventurous. Yes, it can be annoying as people gawk and swarm but honestly, I don't mind so much anymore (I would gawk too if I didn't see my triplets everyday). We have had some funny confrontations lately: while at the beach a lady came up to take a peek and said "I've never seen triplets up close before". Then, while leaving campus the other day, the parking attendant saw the 3 carseats in the car and left the parking booth to peek in the windows while the cars behind us honked. She asked to get a closer look but I politely told her I needed to be on my way :)

Here are pics of some of our latest adventures:

A trip to a restaurant (we are doing this more and more):

Visiting friends on campus:

An Earth Day event in downtown Raleigh. The third time it was annoying. I am getting cabinet locks today.

Today's triplet Tuesday pic represents the ordeal of packing up the kids for rides. The infant seats were a blessing until the past few months, when my biceps couldn't keep up with 25 + lbs. of baby and seat in each arm. We are in the process of picking out their next carseats, which will require carrying the children out one-by-one to the car and strapping them in. It is the van or bust.

A Balancing Act

With triplets, just getting the essentials done in life is a balancing act. I hate to admit this, but there have been plenty of days where I am unable to squeeze in a shower or I completely forget to brush my teeth in the morning. I cannot simply carry my baby into the bathroom and let them play on the floor while I shower and dress. By the time I got all three kids in the bathroom, there would definitely be a poopy diaper to change, spit-up to wipe up, or a boo-boo to kiss. The harsh reality is I often am a disheveled mess until the kids go down for morning nap. Heck, some days I stay a disheveled mess until bedtime.
So, I sometimes seriously doubt I can ever accomplish much else besides making sure we all eat, drink, and stay clean while my kids are little. Yet, besides squeezing in blogging (my creative outlet), grocery shopping, and my 4-5 workouts a week, I also am trying to finish my master’s degree. This would not be possible without the help of the most awesome grammy in the world who my children absolutely adore (thanks mom) and coffee. For the past several months, Grammy P. comes over twice a week while I frantically knock away at my thesis, run my errands, and stay sane. I also make sure I keep my k-cup stock of coffee full.

So how do I accomplish anything? It’s a balancing act and a multi-tasker’s dream. I try to fill the dishwasher in the morning while the kids are eating finger food for breakfast. I try to get laundry going during morning nap a few days a week and the other days I try to jump on my spin bike for 45 min. While the kids play, I try to switch out laundry, put away laundry or restock supplies. During lunch I try to empty the dishwasher while the kids play with their sippy cups. Afternoon nap is cleaning, emailing, blogging or trying to get thesis done. I try to get the kids out of the house between afternoon nap and dinner. We either run errands or go on a run. Evenings are thesis work (only during crunch time), more chores, and maybe a tv show before curling up with my book.

With all the hustle and bustle of life, you would think I would be exhausted and loony. But, I am pretty anal about taking care of myself. I think this is so important for all women! I try to get myself into bed every night by 9:30 PM so that I can read and PEACEFULLY fall asleep by 10 PM (my kids bedtime is 7 PM with few exceptions). This means I get almost 8 hours of sleep a night (with the exception of teething, colds, etc). I also make sure I get my workouts in. Those natural endorphins do a whole lot more than keep me skinny. I try to eat healthy (yogurt, fruit and lots of fiber) but make sure I get a special reasonable treat every night (ice-cream). Perhaps most silly but good for my psych, I try to keep my toenails painted.

So, by making sure I take care of myself, get out of the house with the kids, and am efficient with my time I am able to accomplish life without being completely exhausted and overwhelmed. In fact, I am very close to finishing my thesis and FINALLY getting my master’s degree. Perhaps the most important piece of all this is family. Not only has my mom been a huge help, but really enjoying my kids and the time we spend together as a family is paramount. Even though cleaning up the cheerios all over the floor was just another thing I had to do, seeing the mischievous grin on Marcus’s face made the extra work worth it. Even though loading the kids in and out of the stroller every day is a huge PITA, enjoying the fresh air and getting exercise is worth it. Even though taking the kids out anywhere causes a scene and takes lots of patience, seeing their happy faces and being reminded by strangers what an amazing gift Max and I have been given, makes it all worth it.

So I think taking care of ourselves and appreciating family keeps life from becoming too exhausting and overwhelming, even if you don’t have triplets. Does it prevent us from becoming loony…that is still up for debate?

Truthful Triplet Tuesday

I decided that every Tuesday I am going to post a few pictures that represents the reality of life with triplets. Why Tuesday? What other day of the week could be more typical?

While I was cleaning dried spit-up spots off our once gorgeous plush oriental rug (it is WAY to late to temporarily replace with a cheaper alternative) Marcus opened the cereal cabinet and got into the bag of cheerios (yes, I know they make cabinet locks). Everyone looked adorable and the weather was perfect. Grammy and Grandpa P. delivered the kids first Easter baskets (the big bunny must have left them at their house). The kids had fun finding eggs (the babies eggs were full of cheerios!) and playing with their new toys. The big boys REALLY enjoyed trying out Charlie and Nathan's Easter present. alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5322841287369415090" border="0" />If I had known I was going to get pregnant with triplets, I would have had some bikini farewell event. Maybe a baywatch shot of me running in my bikini or maybe I would have worn it around for a full day. I would at least have taken a good look at myself in the mirror wearing each of my bikini's. Because, my bikini days are over!

I remember one of my good friend's showing me her teensie c-section scar soon after I got pregnant and marveling how minuscule the damage was. I remember thinking, "I could easily hide that under a bikini bottom". Ha Ha.

Then, I remember making the HUGE mistake while I was pregnant of watching the Jon and Kate episode where Kate revealed to the world what her post-sextuplet belly looked like. I literally immediately ran up to my room and cried for hours. Max attempted to make me feel better by saying "But honey, she looks great post-tummy tuck. It is completely fixable". That is the moment I realized a tummy tuck was the ONLY way I would ever wear a bikini again.

While I was on bedrest in the hospital, I only saw myself in a full length mirror once, a few days before I gave birth to my babies. I cried then too.

I remember being suprised by the varrying responses of the mother's on the triplet board regarding their "after" tummy skin. Some of them reported "no stretch marks, I must be gumby" and others said "The damage is permanent, you will never look the same!" I now realize many of these mothers who claimed no permanent bodily harm only went to 28-30 weeks (my first stretch mark appeared at 30 weeks), they were 6 ft. tall or they really were gumby.

The last three weeks of my pregnancy were a major challenge for my 5 foot even frame. My ribs ached as they expanded, my insides migrated, and unfortunately I did not grow new skin. The result...ribs that will never retract, hanging skin, and a gaping hole between my ab muscles.

However, I must say I am completely in awe of how my body that was completely out of whack prior to my pregnancy managed to pull it together and nurture 3 human beings for 33 weeks. The results may be a flabby tummy and protruding ribs but they also include 3 miracles that make all the pain and uglies worth it.

I worked hard for my six pack prior to my pregnancy. And even though I know I will not be showing them off anytime soon, I am proud that I have worked hard after my pregnancy to regained all my ab strength.

Maybe some day I will get that tummy tuck and wear a bikini again. For now, I am counting my blessings and enjoying my crazy but wonderful new family. And my tankini is in the mail.

You Did What?

I like to live life on the edge. This weekend we took a "Pietron siblings" trip to the beach with my sister and her husband, her two boys (18 months and 3 years) and my brother. Yes, that is 5 kids age 3 and under but a 1:1 child/adult ratio which is way better than my daily ratio of 1:3. We had a great time and the weather was fantastic. The men took a night out on a casino cruise and my sister and I took a 6-hour outlet shopping trip (HEAVEN!) the next day. That did mean leaving the "men" with all 5 kids for an afternoon/evening. Besides a few questionable moments (receiving a picture on my phone of Uncle Nick having a drink at a bar with Mia strapped to his chest and being greeted by a 3 year old eating donuts an hour past his bedtime) everyone prospered. Here are a few pics of the adventurous (notice I did not say relaxing) weekend:

My sister and I taking the kids for a walk on the beach:
I belong to a group of triplet + moms who keep me sane. We depend on each other to figure out how to raise high order multiples and survive. A hot topic on our forum is "does it get any easier" or "please God tell me there is light at the end of the tunnel!" These posts are usually written by a new mom of multiples whose children are 4 months or younger. I know...I wrote one of them when my kids were around 2 months (I think mine was titled "Do we ever turn a corner..lie to me please!"). The answers range from "Hang in there honey, it gets so much easier to "hell no, it is harder now than ever. Sorry."

So, what do I think now that my kids are 9 months? Easier...maybe. Different...yes. More manageable and fun...definitely! As you can see from my recent video dairies, things are a little obnoxious around the house. Of course, my "obnoxious" may look like "chaos and utter mayhem" to others. Life is exhausting with triplets. I am constantly chasing after a kid, untangling kids, or comforting a kid who has just failed miserably at catching themselves when they fall. In the meantime I am doing laundry, changing clothes, washing the endless dirty bibs and bottles, changing diapers, peeling dried half eaten cheerios off...well everything, and wiping up spit-up. If you have/had triplets around 9-15 months, you know exactly how crazy things can be; if you have/had just one baby in this age range, you can try to imagine but you will fail. So, how can things be better? Maybe it is the sleep, maybe it is the kids exuberant personalities, or maybe it is the overall awesomeness of my children...life is so much better with triplets now. The first 3-4 months I felt like I was hanging on by a thread, some days I was ready to check myself into rehab...and I didn't even have an addiction. It must have been the combination of no sleep, leaking breasts, crazy hormones, constant crying (the babies. Fine...sometimes mine), colic, reflux and Jocelyn (sorry Josie, as angelic and sweet as you are now, you were a tough newborn!). Now, I am completely exhausted at the end of the day. As most of you know if you have tried to contact me, I rarely have the energy to respond to e-mails or answer my phone (sorry). But, I honestly enjoy everything about my triplets. If you dropped by my house at lunchtime (come on...I dare you), you may walk away thinking "God bless that woman's soul" but I will be thinking "God, I am so blessed".

Would I say our life is "normal" Hell no. Just looking at some of the topics on my triplet+ mom forum answers that question:
-how do I fit my stroller in the van? (trust me, no one on this board is ever going to use the word "car")
-I had a panic attack last night, tell me it is ok
-the step by step plan to not locking your keys in the car when you load/unload your kids
-Help! How do I keep my 6 month olds from beating each other up?
-I'm on TLC tomorrow!

So no, Max and I's life is not normal. But, we survive, thrive and LOVE IT! Here is the 9-month report card:

Amelia - 15 lbs. 10 oz, 5% 26.5 in., 20% - still a tiny peanut
Marcus - 18 lbs. 11 oz, 25%, 28 in., 45% - our big man
Jocelyn - 17 lbs. 9 0z, 25%, 26 in., 10% - looks like she may get her height from mom

The doctor was most impressed with the kids motor skills. He says he would never have guessed they were preemies since they are acting like regular 9-10 month old babies: crawling, pulling up, cruising, balancing briefly, clapping, waving, etc. Maybe it is their active mom and grammy who encourage them on all day...or maybe they are just super smart:) We sure are proud of our kiddos.

The More We Get Together

No, we didn't just get a video camera. Then I got pregnant with triplets and was restricted from running and other physical activity. Then I went on bedrest for about 3 months and gained 70 pounds. This was very hard for me, a personal trainer who can't sit still. Of course it was worth it but getting back in shape has been a tough journey. Running has been by far the hardest to get back into. I take the babies jogging about 3x per week and squeeze in 2 other days of weights and cardio either while the kids nap or after they go to bed. I've accepted that I won't be able to run as far and as fast as I used to until years down the road, when I have the freedom to run 7-12 miles several times a week. I still enjoy running and finally ran my first post-baby 5K race this past weekend with Max and his co-workers. Max took the babies in the triplet jogger and let me run free...no babies attached :) Here are Max and the kids before the race:

The kids had so much fun and were perfect angels. Something crazy happened the other night. I heard Marcus babbling in his crib and woke up and looked at my watch. It was 7 AM and I felt completely refreshed! I had not heard a peep out of the kids all night. I gleefully got up and prepped bottles. Like we do every morning, we gathered in the girls room for bottles, diaper changes and playtime. Although Marcus and Mia were in a great mood, Josie was very reluctant to get up. Once she finally decided to join the land of the living, her nor Marcus would drink their bottles. Oh well. Everyone was happily crawling around the room and babbling up a storm. We sang some songs, read some books and about an hour later it was time to go downstairs for breakfast. By this time Marcus was VERY fussy. I made a mental note to replace the battery in the girl's clock because I noticed it was stopped at 2:30. And, I noticed we must have gotten enough snow to cancel everything because my usual morning show was not on the radio.

I went to wake Max up to help me get the kids downstairs and noticed it was still very dark outside (I keep the blinds closed in the girls room). I looked back down at my watch and...DEVASTATION! It was in chrono mode...I had started my workout the night before exactly 7 hours ago. I switched to the correct mode and OH MY GOSH, IT WAS 3 AM! I got my triplets up at 2:00 AM, fed them and played with them for an hour! It is amazing how quickly your mood can change. No wonder the clock was "stuck" and my radio show was not on (we did get snow). After some moments of mortification I gathered myself together and put the kids back to bed. Marcus was asleep as soon as his head hit his mattress. The girls also quickly went back to sleep.

Thank heavens I didn't start a new routine...playtime at 3 AM. How humiliating. We all know it. But wow do babies grow up fast. Months 1-3 seemed to last forever. There were so many days were I was ready to throw in the towel. Months 4-8 have been a blur, a very entertaining blur. Don't get me wrong, there are certainly still days that I barely get a chance to brush my teeth but there are others where I find time to make my own baby food.

These days the house is filled with screams of delight. We try to be conspicuous at the grocery store but when Mia is squealing like a little diva as people walk by, it is hard to go unnoticed. The joys of 8 month olds :)

And, we have our first official crawler...

Mia is everywhere. Our tiny 2.5 lb 33 week baby is the first to develop hand/knee coordination. This little princess also has her first tooth.

Baby Josie is not far behind Mia. She has taken a few tentative knee/arm movements forward but she can go backward like a champ. She is known to get stuck under the couch and back herself into corners. She gracefully sits herself up from her hands and knees. Yesterday she made it across the room and plopped herself into sitting right in front of the tv. Go figure. No teeth yet for Josie.
Momma's boy Marcus has found a quicker way to move than crawling. It's fast and it works. A child’s temperament is malleable and often dictated by the parent.
Post-Baby – Yeah right!

Pre-Baby - Why does that mother not wipe that big booger out of her child’s nose?
Post –Baby - Wiping your child’s nose results in screaming. People will think you pinched your child with how it carries on. Plus, another one is going to reappear immediately.

Pre-Baby - You can train your child to sleep through the night; it just takes a little willpower.
Post-Baby – Ha, Ha, Ha! I think I may puke if I hear the words “sleep training” ever again!

Pre-Baby – Gross, why would someone let their baby continue to wear an outfit that appears to be soaked in saliva?
Post-Baby – Saliva, that isn’t saliva. It is a concoction of spit-up, boogers, formula, food and drool. I’ll change him into his third outfit of the morning when this one is totally drenched.

Pre – Baby - How can someone let their child fall asleep while playing in their jumparoo? That poor child must be exhausted
Post –Baby - My child has fallen asleep in their jumparoo several times. I think there must be some sleepy potion that puffs out of the seat when the kids jump.

Pre-Baby – I am not going to let baby sh!@ take over my house.
Post-Baby – I have used burp cloths for Kleenex, tripped over toys in my bathroom and have a space saucer in front of my fireplace. And yes, I have gotten rid of the coffee table.

Pre-Baby – I’m going to be the mom who pushes my stroller in high heels.
Post-Baby – I twisted my ankle before I got the second kid buckled in.

<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" We had been living in a townhome that we spent a year designing and almost another year waiting to be built. We finally moved in Feb '07 and found out we were expecting triplets in Dec of that year. The house and community would have been perfect for our first child, not our first 3 children. So we put our house on the market for several months but it did not sell. While I was in the hospital on bedrest, we got a private offer on our house (it was not even on the market at the time). It is amazing how some things work out. A few days before delivering the triplets, Max and I looked at houses online. Within days we had made an offer on our current home. The house is perfect. The girls and boys room were already painted. There is a room right off the living room we have turned into a playroom. The backyard is fenced (for Hayden) and their is a swing set. I never saw the house in person until after we had closed and right before we moved in. I love it!

It was crazy to move with 1 month old triplets but you would be surprised at how many other triplet families I've talked to have done it. This house is perfect for our family and I am so thankful things worked out for us. We have also been blessed with amazing neighbors who adore our dog and give him the love he deserves while we are busy with our infants.

Here is the girl's nursery. My mom and Aunt Carol made the beautiful quilts for the kids. They smile, laugh and entertain each other. The silliest things are funny: Josie cracked up yesterday watching Mia eat. When our dog Hayden enters the room, Marcus's whole body shakes with excitement. The other day, Mia couldn't stop gigling at a silly hat I put on my head. Baby giggles are a beautiful thing. I can take them places outside the house too. The other week we got stuck at Target in an awful storm. I had Marcus and Mia in the double stroller and was wearing Josie in the baby bjorn. I ended up buying some baby food and spoons and fed them at the Starbucks in Target waiting for the storm to pass. No one cried or caused a scene. We even went to a cocktail party to celebrate the completion of one of our rental properties last weekend. The kids sat and played on the floor for hours. They were angels. Here is Marcus with Uncle Nick enjoying the basketball game at the party.

Nights have also been wonderful. For the first time in over a year, I have nights where I sleep from 9:30 PM-4:30 AM without waking up. For over 1 month now, Josie and Marcus are officially STTN. They go to bed at 7 PM and I don't hear a peep from them till Marcus (of course) wakes up around 4-5 AM. Usually I can pat him back to sleep and go back to bed for an additional hour or two. Mia STTN about half the time. When she does wake up, it is usually around 4 AM for a very quick bottle. I have not heard a peep from Josie from 7 PM-6 AM in months. I am officially getting 7 hours of sleep most nights. Life is so much better with sleep. Sleep is a beautiful thing. Never underestimate the power of sleep!

I have heard people say that 6-9 months is a great age. I am beginning to see how people could forget the horror of the newborn stage and think about having another child. Something that was incomprehensible to me before. HELLO, NOT ME! WE ARE DONE! YES, FOR SURE!

I don't think days with the triplets will ever be easy. But, as the sickies go away, everyone sleeps, and smiles take the place of whines, life is placid.

Until we start to teeth, until rocking on all 4's and scooting turns to all out crawling, and until we catch another illness, let there be peace :)

<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" Often it is for a walk or jog on the trail by our house. Sometimes we go to the local Target, Petsmart or bookstore. Whenever we are out and about with the kids we get a little attention. Maybe a few people stop to "awe" and occasionally we get a medical person (L&D nurse, ultrasound tech, etc) to politely ask a few questions about how far we carried the babies, how long they were in the NICU and how big they were when they were born. You may be surprised that not many people ask us about fertility treatments.

Sometimes we walk to the grocery store about 1.5 miles down the road. Today was one of those days. And for some reason we got A TON of attention on this short trip. Luckily everything I needed today was down the cereal and baby aisle. However, conveniently, 5 grocery store employees needed to venture into the cereal aisle while we were there. They all stopped to ooo and awe and ask lots of questions. One 75+ year old man asked me if I used fertility drugs. Like I said, I am fairly open about my story but today I felt like I had to defend myself. I found myself telling this old man I didn't know how I used an ovulation drug that had less than 1% chance of triplets. The octuplets are getting to me.

I hate that I feel like I have to defend my use of fertility treatment. If I had needed to do IVF to get pregnant, I should have no problem admitting that. The ocutplets are getting to me darn it!

As we were checking out, an employee helped me unload my groceries and pack them back into the stroller. She said "honey, you let me know if I can help you out anytime!" The manager then came up and thanked us for shopping at his store.

Is it the octuplets or was it just one of those days?

My Babies are Growing Up!

I know my last post was a little emotional. We have had some tough days with the triplets lately and even a supermom like myself needs to vent from time to time :) As shiny and bright as our life is on most days, I like to be honest and admit some days are tough.

Today I am back to supermom. Between naps, bottles, lunch and administering Josie's breathing treatment, we managed to get the babies dressed (adorably) and do a photo shoot! There was a lot of snot wiping but we got some great pictures. Here is one of our favorite shots!

I also have been dying to get a photo of the babies using their new bath rings! Our awesome neighbor Gail (aka, our dog Hayden's surrogate mom, bless you Gail!) bought these for us (I promise we supervise the babies at all times while using these rings..I'm not trying for another controversial post ;)). The kids have always loved bath time but now it is a blast! As usual, Mia is being grabby. She loved being in the middle and pulling at her brother and sister!

Baby updates

Marcus is constantly up on all 4's rocking and has made progress on moving backwards. He hasn't figured out you need to move your arms forward to go forward.

Mia seems to actually move around more than Marcus but how is a mystery to us. She is not crawling or rolling to the other side of the room but somehow, she gets there.

Josie is not the type to be dramatic about her achievements. She is sitting like a champ, which came out of nowhere. I'm guessing some day soon we will look up and she will be daintily retrieving toys on all 4's.
