So this past weekend we made a quick 4 day trip up to Northwest Pennsylvania to spend some time with the in-laws. It was a good trip, full of plenty of time to relax, unwind, and give thanks. It wasn't until I got home, though, that the depth of all I have to be thankful for kicked in.
We came home to a mess. A crappy mess. As in a backed up main sewer line so no one could shower mess. And did I mention a toilet had backed up while we were gone? Yeah. A mess. One doesn't start shouting "Oh th...[More]

Back in college at Cedarville University I had this vision of my life taking the Bible to places it's never been in ways it's never gone before. In that glimpse, I figured it would be with a group like Wycliffe Bible Translators USA or JAARS or something like that. For years that dream lay dormant, even after I started listening and helping out at the Daily Audio Bible.
It wasn't until last year, when the DAB began broadcasting in Arabic, that I realized I was right smack dab in the middle o...[More]

Went for another walk in the dark tonight. These are such good times. So much of life is non-stop. It has been good to start getting out in the dark, quiet, cold air.
Spent the whole day doing on-site service for a long term client; didn't quite get everything done, but nothing was broken at the end of the day. Several steps closer to completion, which will mean less hassle for us to maintain old equipment and less cost / more uptime for my client and their team.
Took some time to reflect on...[More]

Interesting day. Lots of sub-stories these bullet points will trigger as I look back on today.
Can you find the one thing I didn't really do?

Stuffed my phone under the pillow so I wouldn't be able to hear the alarm go off. Overslept by an hour. "No, I'm not tired, really."
Ate leftovers for breakfast that were probably 5 times better than whatever you scrounged up at the fast-food joint.
Spent the morning finishing up a financial forecast that involves capital M's within 18 months.

Another day gone by. Got a lot done today, it feels like. The day wasn't rushed, but it also was full. I didn't make a couple appointments I would have liked to have made, but every day has its decisions that must be made.
Brian talked a bit about discipline on the DAB today. I had been thinking about how sobering the Old Testament feels, about how some of the stories just give me that vibe, even though I'm not in exactly the same boat as the Israelites. I can relate. Discipline is hard. It ...[More]

A bullet point of a day. Not bad, just out of time to put complete thoughts together.

Worked through last month's financials for C2IT. We started really measuring some things about 3 months ago and it's helped set goals and know what is and isn't working to achieve them.
Made a strategic business decision to cut ties with a rather long term vendor in order to solidify ties with one that is better suited for our business. Not easy, but also not really that painful once I faced it head on.

My list of dreams of my life includes daily journalling about my life, whether it's big things or small things, exciting days or boring days. I still think that'd be a great way of life, but it may not happen anytime soon, but then again, it all starts with today, right? So here's today.
Today starts with a little boost of confidence from yesterday. I finall butchered my first two chickens. The first one was quite awkward. No gagging, but it did take me three tries to find the jugular (or wa...[More]

This prayer comes from a book I'm reading right now - . This is the prayer following a chapter about dealing with those painful emotions - grief, anger, loss, and pain. It's been quite timely for me. I have work to do in these areas.
Lord Jesus, when I think about my losses,it can feel like I have no skin to protect me. I feel raw, scraped to the bone. I don't know why you have allowed such pain. We launched our campaign at www.fundable.com/me2u this week. Will you help us spread the word?

ME2U is a positive step in the evolution of mobile safety. We create a secure buffer through which coaches, pastors, teachers, mentors, and other youth leaders can safely text today’s youth. Through our platform, parents give permission for group leaders to text their children and can monitor all messages send back and forth between their kids and other adults invested in their lives. New website aims to reduce inappropriate relationships between children and adults

It seems to be an epidemic—too many cases of teachers, coaches, or even pastors accused of having inappropriate relationships with young people th...[More]

In my Bible reading today, the people asked the prophet to "ask the Lord to tell us where he wants us to go and what he wants us to do" and then said that "we promise to do whatever he says, even if it isn't what we want to do."
Subsequently, the response they got wasn't what they wanted to hear, and they refused to obey.
I don't take this reminder lightly. As I seek to follow God's leading by asking Him, "what should I do here [and here] [and here]," am I seriously awaiting his response? Am...[More]

Today in my Bible reading time I ran once again across Jeremiah 29. There's a verse in this chapter that is quoted time and time again as a promise to those in pain:
"For I know the plans that I have for you,' declares the Lord. Plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope."
The thing is, if you read this verse in light of the rest of chapters 28 and 29, the way it's used in our Christian circles goes out the window. I wrote about this a while back after reading a b...[More]

This is the first of a few blog posts I want to do about "Old Me New Me." I'm currently reading an excellent book about the intersection and balance of emotional health and spirituality, and have this nice neat list of things I have often described myself as, either in my head or as what I thought others thought of me. These really aren't in any particular order other than the order they came to me, and I'll be grouping some together, like I am today. What I hope to do is walk through some of...[More]

If you've never read the book Nehemiah, I'd encourage you do to so. Especially if you're a leader of any sorts. You could pull this book out of the Bible, toss it up on a bookshelf of leadership books, and it would stand the test of time. Put into the context OF the Bible, though, it's a wonderful story of leadership, delegation, working together toward common goals, and facing opposition. Something leaders everywhere get to deal with.

The fruit of the spirit as found in Galatians 5:22-23 have been a nice, sweet way for me to see how God's alive and well in me... until I read them in a manner that draws out the meaning of each word just a bit more. You can't deal with these attributes as a checklist of simple, 4 letter words. They carry much more meaning. Check it out (or read them in parallel on BibleGateway)

"Something breaks on our heart in moments like that... no matter how much farther we go on with our walk with God."
That's a line in a series I'm listening to right now called the Four Streams, put together by Ransomed Heart Ministries and recently made available through the Daily Audio Bible podcast. That line rings true with me in manners I am sure I won't be able to put into print, and am just now starting to come to grips with in my heart and mind. I'm listening to a live webinar by Dare 2 Share at the moment about discipling youth and can't stop thinking about my friend Dillon. I'm not always paying attention, but I know he has a running tally of how many friends he's reaching out to Jesus with. The speaker, Greg Stier, made the assertion that evangelism is critical to discipling teens:

Every wonder what's going on inside of your own head? Wonder why some things make you furious while others leave you without a care at all? Or why some seemingly sad situations leave you feeling just fine, without that emptiness or hurt or emotion you think should be there? I wonder about myself sometimes.

Kind of like now. My last grandparent passed away this weekend, and I don't even know how to describe what I feel. I know how to describe what I don't feel quite well... sadness, grief,...[More]

What is it that makes a day worth getting up for?
There have been a number of days lately where I've hit snooze more times than I can count. It's not that I want to hide from what's ahead or get more sleep... I guess it's just that question we all probably ask (or do we?)... "what's the point?" Why get up now? I'll be to stiff to exercise. It won't do much that much good to get to work 30 minutes early. If I wait a few more minutes my wife will make the coffee.

Brian has come down with a bout, or as you Canadians say, “a bout,” a slight case of food poisoning. So he has had the utter life sort of temporarily taken out from him, the wind out of his sails, so to speak, so he...[More]
