I’m going to keep the written portion of this entry concise, I’ve got work to do and pictures to share. So here’s a little background:

For the past couple months I’ve been working on a project for my Design Thesis course, It’s entirely self driven. I decided to design a set of recycled USB flash drives along with a packaging solution, point of purchase, website, and icons. The drives are built out of recycled materials, and more specifically recycled electronics (aside from the wood one). Each drive is loaded with media and resources to teach the user how to properly recycle their used electronics.

Currently I’m still in the brainstorming phase for the project, but I’ve finalized my package design, and built some mock-ups this afternoon. The package is made of wood, has a built in USB port, and the bottom slides out for storage.

Well, I finally got my graphics card replaced, and now that my MBP is back in action I got a chance to try out one of these. After following precise instructions from the internet, I was able to “neuter” my CueCat to remove its built in encryption. Now, using an online barcode generator, I can make my own barcodes and scan them in to my laptop using the CueCat (image). I can also use the CueCat to catalogue my media collection using Delicious Library. As of now, I’m not sure if this has any practical implication in my life, but it’s pretty cool nonetheless.

Next on the docket, I got a Garmin Colorado 400T GPS receiver, and I’ve been putting it to good use. If you’re not familiar with Geocaching, It’s my new favourite thing. I’m thinking about incorporating design into my adventures somehow. Perhaps a series of waterproof boxes for caches.

And finally, from the mouth of Jeff Cannata, and the mind of SNL:

“If I could have one wish this holiday season, it would be for all the children on earth to hold hands and sing.

If I could have two wishes this holiday season, it would be for this 23″ Greater than HD resolution monitor from Dell.“

Yesterday it bit the dust, and now I’m without a computer. The genii at the Apple store estimate it will be about a week till it’s back in action. The last time I went that long without a laptop… I didn’t own a laptop. If I didn’t have so much work to do I’d probably welcome a computer free week. I guess I’ll be spending lots of time in the lab and on my trusty iPod touch. I can also take this time to work on the more hands on portion of my thesis… Which I’ll be posting more about shortly.
