GOOGLE LEAKED THEIR +1 CHROME EXTENSION?

If you haven't seen Google's new "Dear Sophie" video, I highly recommend you check it out. It's brilliant.

And watch closely.

At various points in the video, the Chrome browser in use reveals an unreleased product: a Google +1 extension. For the best view of it, skip to the 0:51 mark. There it is, front and center, next to the Picasa button being clicked on.

The funniest part of this is that Google is actually airing this video on national television as part of their new Chrome marketing push. So Google just leaked their own new feature to millions of people. Well, those watching very closely, at least.

So what does the extension do? Hard to say since they never actually click on it in the video. But one can assume that it's a simple way to +1 any site you're visiting. Google formally unveiled +1 about a month ago as a way to socially share Google Search results with friends — and to help Google rank those results with social juice.

I'm also wondering if the extension doesn't have more social functionality — such as a way to share a link on Twitter and other networks alongside +1′ing it. You may recall that as they were developing +1, we kept getting leaks about it. One of those was a +1 toolbar that was apparently a way to share with other social networks.

Google has also said that a +1 button is coming for publisher websites. But we haven't heard any more on that since the original announcement.

Anyway, a +1 Chrome extension is clearly on the way. And Google let us know about it either by way of a brilliant subliminal marketing move, or a big mistake in front of the entire American public.

Either way, great ad. +1, really.

Google TV for Kids!

If your kids want truly interactive TV (who can blame them?), then Google TV can really help out. There are great websites optimized for the TV suited for the kits in our Spotlight Gallery. Some of the most kid friendly sites are:

MeeGenius: Read your kids beautifully illustrated books (a huge array of classics and more modern tales). You can customize some of the content to make it more personal and the app will then read the story out loud, with the relevant words highlighted on screen for you kids to follow along.
Fraboom: There is so much going on at Fraboom (from educational videos to games) that they are right to describe it as a museum. Look out for the battle against Baron Von Boredom.
PBSKids: A really simple interface means that kids can navigate around their favorite videos of PBS KIDS shows like Curious George and Dinosaur Train.
Cartoon Network: Quickly and easily find all your favorite shows from Cartoon Network.

Dealing with time zones can be a headache. Whether you're a regular traveler or trying to plan ahead for your weekend in Paris, it's often difficult to keep track of time differences. We've heard your feedback and are pleased to announce a new addition to Google Calendar: event time zones.

With event time zones, you can specify the time zone for a given event. So when you're home in Florida, you can more easily set up dinner with your friend in Paris for the following week. Events will appear on your calendar according to the current time zone you're in, and when you change to your destination time zone they'll be in the right place. Just click the "Time zone" link to the right of the date and time fields on the event page. You can even set up events which start in one time zone and end in another, ideal for those of you who fly often.

As we announced back in August, we are not continuing active development of Google Wave as a stand-alone product, but have been working hard on the open source Wave in a box project and on making waves accessible through Google Docs.

We wanted to let you know that we will keep wave.google.com running past December 31, 2010 until a suitable replacement to host all your waves is available. In the meantime, you can now use the new export feature to download a zipped version of up to ten waves at a time. Learn more in the Google Wave Help Center.

Additionally, Wave in a Box, the project to make it easy for anyone to host their own wave server, has made significant progress on both functionality and community growth. Just last week, the Apache Software Foundation accepted Wave into its incubator for new projects.

Thanks yet again to all our users for giving Wave a try with your schools, businesses and organizations and to the developers who are working on the next steps for the open source project!

Detailed Overview

The Neobux program is one of many of these types of programs on the internet today. The way you make money as a member of this site is very simple. You click on links, visit advertiser websites, stay on them for a certain period of time, and you earn money for it. You refer others to the program, and you earn money when they click on websites too.

The amount of money that you earn from Neobux by clicking on one advertiser link and visiting the site is not much. The pay that you do get depends on your level of membership. There is a free level and a golden level. At the free level, you make $.01 to view a site for a standard period of time, and $.015 for viewing a site for an extended period of time. How long the period of time is depends on what the advertiser pays for. At the golden level the pay for those are $.01 and $.02 respectively. Neobux Golden members also earn more for their referrals' clicks than free members do. You can actually rent referrals each month from the site if you like, which could possibly increase your earnings.

The Neobux site can be a bit confusing at first. Content is very minimal, so you have to look around the site a bit to figure it all out. Once you join and can enter into your account area, it still looks pretty minimal, but eventually you find out where everything is.

Reputation

A lot of these types of programs get many complaints, but that doesn't seem to be the case with Neobux. Most reports are that the company does indeed pay, and they pay in a timely manner. Nobody is claiming to get a lot of money from it, but that's not surprising. Ambitious members could conceivably make some extra spending money each month, which for some is a plus.

Google Donates $5 Million To Support Digital Journalism

Some people like to argue that search engines are killing journalism, but if that's the case, Google at least deserves credit for trying to perform a sort of first aid. Google announced this afternoon that it's donating $5 million to "encourage innovation in digital journalism."

Where $3 million of that sum will wind up is unknown at this point. Google has only said that it's looking to fund one or more journalism projects not based in the U.S. As for the other $2 million, it will go to the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

The Knight Foundation dates back to 1940. Its name may sound familiar if you've watched many PBS shows, and a post on the Official Google Blog explained that the Knight Foundation "has a proven track record of supporting programs that drive innovation in journalism."

Then the post continued, "It will use $1 million to support U.S. grant-making in this crucial area. The other $1 million will augment the Knight News Challenge, which is accepting funding proposals from anyone, anywhere in the world, until December 1. . . . [T]he News Challenge has supported projects like DocumentCloud, which aims to bring more investigative-reporting source material online so anyone can find and read it."

Facebook to Update the Commenting System with Votes and More [Mashable]

Facebook may be looking to update its commenting system with a slew of very important features, including threaded comments, voting and a couple of others.

All Facebook has a screenshot (below) which shows these features in action. We don't know the origin of the screenshot, but Facebook may be testing the new features on a small subset of users, as it often does.

If the screenshot is genuine, it's extremely interesting; the new features have the power to transform Facebook's commenting platform – which is currently a very simple affair – into something far more advanced.

Threaded comments are a great addition; many blogs, including Mashable, have switched from a single-threaded to a multi-threaded commenting system and never looked back. The ability to see some extra info about the user that left a comment, including his comment count, is obviously quite useful, too.

But the really big news is the voting system, which gives users the ability to rate a comment positively or negatively, similar to Digg's voting system. The votes result in a comment rating, which can be really useful if Facebook plans to introduce a comment moderation system based on the ratings later on.

We first introduced the Google URL Shortener (goo.gl) last December as part of Google Toolbar and Feedburner. Since our initial release, we've integrated the technology into many other Google products including News, Blogger, Maps, Picasa Web Albums, and Moderator, but people have been asking for a direct way to use the service. Today we're giving goo.gl its own website (http://goo.gl/, of course!). We don't intend to overload goo.gl with features, but we do want it to be the stablest, most secure, and fastest URL shortener on the web.

There are many shorteners out there with great features, so some people may wonder whether the world really needs yet another. As we said late last year, we built goo.gl with a focus on quality. With goo.gl, every time you shorten a URL, you know it will work, it will work fast, and it will keep working. You also know that when you click a goo.gl shortened URL, you're protected against malware, phishing and spam using the same industry-leading technology we use in search and other products. Social Networking giant Facebook has finally managed to beat rival Orkut in India as more and more youngsters jump ship over to Zuckerberg's creation. Orkut had been the reigning king for a good five years, but the clunky interface and lack of features and inventiveness has turned off users. Facebook, which has been growing like a mutated virus offers loads of great features and bells and whistles to attract newbies.

According to comScore, Facebook grabbed the number one ranking in the social networking category for the first time in July with 20.9 million visitors, up 179 per cent versus year ago. Orkut registered a growth of only 16 per cent in the same time period. "The social networking phenomenon continues to gain steam worldwide, and India represents one of the fastest growing markets at the moment," says Will Hodgman, comScore executive vice president for the Asia-Pacific region. "Though Facebook has tripled its audience in the past year to pace the growth for the category, several other social networking sites have posted their own sizeable gains."

Orkut developers have added some new features in a last ditch effort to lure back some users. "Orkut is continuing down the path of innovation with a complete transformation in product DNA that began just last year. We've created this new functionality to give Orkut users more privacy and control over how they share content," Google Product Director Victor Ribeiro said in a statement. India is now the world's seventh largest market for social networking, behind US, China, Germany, Russian Federation, Brazil and the UK. Facebook had announced that it has 500 million users globally, while Orkut has 85 million users on a 30-day basis (users who access Orkut once in at least 30 days). Interestingly, Twitter overtook both Facebook and Orkut in terms of growth over the past one year - the micro blogging site recorded a 239 per cent increase in the number of visitors in India since July 2009.
