StarCraft II: 1.8 Million Copies Launch Date sales

A day just after it’s release and StarCraft II has become the fastest-selling game of 2010 to date and one of the fastest-selling PC games of all time. Just how many copies did Blizzard manage to move on day 1 of Starcraft II’s release? VGChartz estimates that Blizzard and Activision managed to sell 1.8 million copies of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty in just the U.S., Europe and it’s digital download service.

Amazing? Yep, for a PC game that’s downright amazing, especially if you consider Asia still isn’t included in that number, South Korea in particular.

VGChartz estimates that around 31% or 570,000 units of the 1.8 million total were sold via Battle.net’s digital store while the remainder comes from actual disc sales. Around 57% of total sales comes from the USA and the remaining 43% from Europe.

Expect Blizzard to release a more than pleased statement detailing the success of their new game with exact figures. That of Korea should be pretty interesting.

Oh and if you’re still not yet onboard the StarCraft II hype machine, WOW players get StarCraft II for free…. in Korea that is.

Blizzard made a conscious decision to leave anti-aliasing out of the retail version of their new game, StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty.

But from the screenshots we’re seeing, there’s some instances that the game has Anti Aliasing right? Well it seems that the reason for that is due from the difference between the green (NVIDIA) and red (ATI) camp.

Here’s a comparative screenshot from Guru3D:

NVIDIA has added AA for StarCraft II by including an override option within their Control Panel. The result however is a hit in performance (but if you have a card like the GeForce 460 then this is somewhat negligible). ATI on the other hand opted to focus on performance and didn’t follow suit.

Here’s an official statement from ATI regarding the lack of Anti-Aliasing support for Starcraft II:

AMD constantly strives to deliver great gaming experiences for our customers and the upcoming launch of Starcraft II is no exception. Blizzard’s focus on incredible game play for all, means that gamers using ATI Radeon(tm) products can enjoy smooth HD gameplay and industry leading image quality with our current generation of ATI Radeon products as well as many of our past generation cards.

In discussions during the development of StarCraft II, Blizzard indicated that they would not initially include options to set levels of in-game anti-aliasing (“AA”). This meant that support for AA within StarCraft II would only be made possible by including it in the driver, an approach that could significantly impact performance.

Some third party reviews of the Starcraft II beta echo our concerns that AA can cause gameplay impairment. In these reviews, the third parties found that 4x AA led to a reduction in fps rendering at lower screen resolutions, which only became more noticeable at larger resolutions.

After evaluating our options, our engineering team opted not to provide AA support for StarCraft II within the Catalyst Control Center, even though the competition has included AA support in their driver at launch.

We are committed to making AA perform at an acceptable level before we release it to our customers. We will continue to work with Blizzard on this matter and hope to offer our customers an acceptable AA solution at a later date.

The game is available for mobile also, and apps are available for Android and iPhone.

Install PSP Custom Firmware 5.00 M33 Prometheus add-on

With 5.03 GEN-C and 5.50 GEN-D3 getting their own respective Prometheus (5.50 GEN Prometheus and 5.03 GEN Prometheus) plugins that will allow them to play games that require Sony’s 6.20 OFW and above, can the M33 guys who still stick to Dark Alex’s legacy custom firmware get some love? Apparently yes as Red Squirrel has released a 5.00 M33 Prometheus plugin for all you folks that stick to this stable yet admittedly outdated firmware.

Who was it that said that the M33 firmware is dead?

This release will install on all hackable PSPs that has 5.00 M33 firmware (and it’s subsequent patches up to 5.00 M33-6).

Important: DO NOT attempt to install this on PSP-3000 / PSP-2000 TA088v3. YOU WILL BRICK YOUR PSP IF YOU DO.

Important: If you have firmware above 5.00 (5.03 or 5.50 in example) you need to downgrade your PSP to 5.00 M33.

Requirements:

A PSP with custom firmware 5.00 M33 installed (preferably 5.00 M33-6). If your firmware version is below this, please update to 5.00 M33.
PSP battery that’s at least 78% full
Download: M33_Prometheus.zip
Disable ALL plugins.
Back up your save files (so that if they get corrupted, you still have backups)

How to install 5.00 M33 Prometheus add-on

Connect your PSP to your computer
Extract the m33_prometheus.zip to your PC
Copy the M33-Prometheus Installer folder to X:/PSP/GAME/ on your PSP’s memory stick. (Where X is the drive that your PC recognizes your memory stick)
On your XMB, go to Game > Memory Stick, hold the L trigger and press X to start 5.00 M33 Prometheus Updater
Continue to install the official 5.00 M33 Prometheus CFW when prompted
After all process is complete, press X again. Your PSP revert to the XMB screen.
Congratulations, you’ve just installed M33 Prometheus add on on your 5.00 M33.

Important: This release is currently M33 Prometheus v2. Stay updated by subscribing to our feeds.

After installing 5.00 M33 Prometheus, How about some Free PSP Games?

In case of problems you can go back to 5.00 M33 by simply running the installer for 5.00 M33 again.

Developer Notes:

What’s it?
It’s a simple PSP homebrew that installs the MOD Prometheus in your CF 5.00M33-6.
It does all the necessary to enable the MOD Prometheus in your CF such as writing prometheus_lite.prx in Flash0, Prometheus_key.txt in Flash1 and Stargate.prx in SEPLUGINS folder and adding the Stargate.prx plugin string in your GAME.txt
From v2.0 it has also a function to write all files in your Flashs, in this way you won’t loose a place in GAME.txt!

Notes:
-If you use the KHBBS plugin remember to disable it before to use this program, otherwise it can’t write files in flashs correctly.
-Be carefull to use the “All in Flashs installation”, because (if something goes wrong!) it could bring your PSP in a semibrick status!
-The program adds the Stargate.prx plugin string in first position in your GAME.txt (if it exists!). So other plugins (if present) will be saved from second position (you won’t loose them!).
-When you uninstall the MOD prometheus with the specific function of this program the GAME.txt file will be completely deleted. So you will loose all plugins enabled in GAME.
-The program does not recognize the CF version, for this reason it works in any Custom Firmware: be sure to use it ONLY in CF 5.00M33-6!

The game is releasing next week and I can’t wait to get my hands on it . Here’s some info from Famitsu:

Hmm.. so this time around, instead of having just the 4 buttons on the right, you get the have the direction buttons as part of the game too. Interesting and challenging . I do hope there’s more songs in this one than the first game.

Did I somehow mess up the title? Nope, you’re reading that right. Namco and Capcom will be pooling their resources together to create two games instead of just one: Street Fighter X Tekken and Tekken X Street Fighter. Match made in heaven? Heh. I simply can’t wait to get my hands on this awesome game (or set of games as there’s two of theme )

Details are still sparse but what’s certain is that both games will be made separately by Namco and Capcom and play differently.

Street Fighter X Tekken will be made by Capcom will play just like SF IV, a 2D in 3D fighting game and Tekken X Street Fighter will be made by Namco play like Tekken.

Both games will appear on the 360 and the PS3.

There’s still very little info on the game but some gameplay footage was also shown, not much to discern all of the game’s mechanics and battle system but it did show how characters could tag each other in during Ultra combos (like Marvel vs Capcom?). The demo showed Ryu and Chun-Li teaming up to take down Kazuya and Nina.

We’ll be sure to update with any more details that come up.

Microsoft killed PC/Xbox 360 cross platform project

It’s something probably most gamers would want to see. With millions of players on both sides of the gaming coin, it’s almost a match made in heaven right?

A supposed feature of Microsoft’s Live gaming service was the ability for Xbox 360 players to compete against PC players in a multiplayer game. According to Rahul Sood, CTO of HP’s gaming business, the Microsoft project was intended to promote PC gaming but was canned after testing showed those using PCs consistently bested their console counterpart.

Now in case you were wondering Microsoft’s test subjects were made of the best PC gamers and mediocre console players, it’s actually the other way around. “The console players got destroyed every time”, Sood says. “So much so that it would be embarrassing to the XBOX team in general had Microsoft launched this initiative.”

In hindsight however, the result of the test isn’t really at all surprising. Why? Because no matter how much a game is tweaked for a console controller, it’s still inferior to the range of movement and in experience to using a keyboard and mouse.

Too bad we’ll probably never know the reason behind the cancellation as until Microsoft starts confirming things, this still sits in the rumor bin. A rumor that’s likely to fan the PC vs console flame war again.

Goodbye One Manga

It’s a bit early but One Manga has bid farewell to us all. While we still have the week to enjoy scantilations on the site, expect to see that all content to be gone by early next week (RIP OM July 2010) . The decision to take down One Manga and it’s scantilation content comes from Manga Publishers who consider it a violation of their copyrights (hence the slinging of DCMA takedowns).

While most of us will be moving on to other scantilation sites, it’s still sad to see One Manga go. I remember reading Air Gear (before it got moved), Strawberry Panic, Ouran Host Club and a slew of other titles on the site.

On that note however, one has to wonder if OM’s sister site (1000Manga) will also get hit by this decision.

Here’s Zabi’s parting words for us (screencapped and quoted below):

“There is an end to everything, to good things as well.”

It pains me to announce that this is the last week of manga reading on One Manga (!!). Manga publishers have recently changed their stance on manga scanlations and made it clear that they no longer approve of it. We have decided to abide by their wishes, and remove all manga content (regardless of licensing status) from the site. The removal of content will happen gradually (so you can at least finish some of the outstanding reading you have), but we expect all content to be gone by early next week (RIP OM July 2010).

So what next? We’re not really sure at this point, but we have some ideas we would like to try out. Until then, the One Manga forums will remain active and we encourage all of you to continue using them. OMF has developed into a great community and it would be a shame to see that disappear.

You can also show us some love in this moment of sadness by ‘liking’ our brand new Facebook page. It would be nice to see just how many of you came to enjoy our ‘better than peanut butter and jelly’ invention.

Regardless of whether you stay with us or not, on behalf of the One Manga team, I would like to thank you all for your unwavering support over the years. Through the ups and downs you have stuck with us, and that is what kept us going.

As a certain Porky was fond of saying… That’s all folks!

Time for me to go lay down and let this all sink in.

This final unlockable reward from Blizzard Entertainment’s Join the Dominion! promotional site.

The trailer is composed entirely of CG cutscenes and in-game cinematics from StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty. It sheds some light on several rumors that we’ve been hearing (like the Terran Ghost that gets surrounded by the Zerg was indeed Kerrigan) as well as drops some light spoilers.

StarCraft 2 is set for release the this July 27. For us in the Philippines, that works out as July 28.

If you’re a K-On! fan then chances are you’re going to love this

If you’ve played Project Diva: Hatsune Miku, you’ll note the some similarities in both games. Why? Sega has recycled it’s work with Project Diva by simply replacing music and models for those of K-On! Immoral? Probably. Will fans care? Highly unlikely.

The object of the game is pretty much the same as Project Diva. Press the right button at the right time and earn points. The bonus of course is you get to jam with your favorite K-on! girl band. Earn points to unlock items, costumes and dress them up as you see fit What? You’re a guy? Don’t worry, we won’t tell on you

The zergling rush probably the single most defining attack for StarCraft Zerg players. A wikipedia article defines the phrase as:

A Zergling rush is the tactic of attacking an opponent with 6 or more Zergling units as early as permissible. This refers specifically to the strategy where a Zerg player creates a Spawning Pool very early in the game, sacrificing his or her economy to enable creation of Zerglings. Within StarCraft, the strategy is further classified by how early the player attempts to sacrifice economy to execute the rush, for example the four pool rush is the earliest possible Zergling rush. It is called the “four pool rush” (often shortened to 4pool) because the player immediately gathers resources (each player starts out with four worker units) and does not build more workers until the player has enough resources to build a Spawning Pool.

If you’re wondering about the terms used in that quote, you probably need to PLAY StarCraft sometime soon =).

Microsoft announces Kinect pricing and bundles

The Microsoft Kinect is set to invade homes as Microsoft has finally announced the pricing and availability for it’s motion-based controller.

The Kinect will be available in either the basic Kinect package and the Kinect console bundle. The basic package will contain the Kinect hardware and the Kinect Adventures game for $149. The Kinect console bundle while net you an Xbox console, the Kinect hardware and the Kinect Adventures game for $299 and ultimately will replace the Arcade console bundle.

The Kinect console bundle includes the recently announced Xbox Slim which features 4GB of built-in flash memory (no more memory cards), front and back USB ports, a Kinect-specific I/O port, and built-in 802.11n Wi-Fi.

The NPD Group for the month of June that pegged sales of the new Xbox model just north of 452,000 units. Both Kinect bundles will start shipping worldwide on November 3.

Valve releases Alien Swarm for free on Steam

Valve gives yet another game away. This time around it’s Alien Swarm, a futuristic first-person top-down shoot-em-up shooter computer game with roots from a mod of the same name for Unreal Tournament 2004. In case you we’re wondering, the guys who developed the mod were hired by Valve and they’re the guys behind this standalone game.

Alien Swarm’s connects upto four players playing co-op. Survival is the name of the game as you have to progress through the futuristic levels against waves of aliens snapping at your heels.

You have a choice of 4 IAF Marine role classes, each with two selectable characters and access to an arsenal of 40-types of weapons. Like Team Fortress 2, Alien Swarm players can play in either Campaign Mode and Offline Practice Mode.

Features of Alien Swarm include:

Tactical, 4 player co-op action game with a top-down perspective
Complete game code and mod tools
Unlock persistent items by gaining levels
Over 40 weapons and equipment with countless loadout configurations
4 unique classes and 8 unique characters

Alien Swarm is released for free to Steam players on any Windows OS and supports Xb0x 360 controllers. No word on the Mac OS X version.
