Sony explained that online features and services are going to be a “big pillar” of the PS4 experience.

we’ve already talked about the share button, sharing features, second screens…if we continue to invest into online infrastructures, that costs money. If we continue free service for online multiplayer, from a business standpoint, there’s pressure to recover costs. That’s when we decided ‘let’s ask the people who are most active in playing online to share some of the cost so we can invest more.’

And Sony added:

$399 is the price point we always wanted to hit. We carefully looked at the potential of the technology we put in the PlayStation 4. We believe that when PS4 comes out it will be the most powerful system inside.

While I do think that there will be some who’ll be against Sony’s decision to put online multiplayer behind a paywall, unless you really need it, you’ll still able to play games without paying for a PlayStation Plus subscription. And when you decide to get a PS Plus subscription, you’re paying for more than just multiplayer (remember, you get a free game if you PlayStation 4 if you have PS plus subscription) unlike how Microsoft handled XBL where even the basic video services are only accessible upon subscription. PlayStation Plus is a great investment, particularly if you’ve invested in the PlayStation ecosystem since you’ll be getting not just cloud saved backups but free titles for your various PlayStation consoles AND discounts on your digital purchases. And it’s still just below $5 a month.

Specwise, it’s still the same hardware that was announced previously, making it a similiar device to the Xbox One. The similarities however, ends there as Sony is continuing to market the PlayStation 4 as a game centric device first and a media center second while the Xbox One seems to be the other way around.

Aside from the hardware reveal, Sony has a few more potshots at Microsoft’s way in the form of the slides below:

Curiously, there was no mention of backwards compatibility or region-locking in the hardware unveil.  In earlier press-releases, Sony has assured gamers that the PlayStation 4 will remain region-free, binding content within localized accounts (of which you can have multiple, you just need to register on the appropriate PlayStation Store region) while PlayStation 3 backwards compatibility will be served via an as of yet undisclosed streaming service.

Pre orders have started for Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop, and Walmart.

For the price, Microsoft will be bundling in: the standard 500GB model, a wireless controller, the new Kinect, and a 14-day trial of Xbox Live Gold. Unlike Sony and the PlayStation 4, Microsoft will not be offering a service for compatibility with existing Xbox 360 titles.

Early adopters will be able to avail of the Xbox One Day One Edition available currently at Amazon for pre-order. The Day One Edition includes a limited edition controller, token code to unlock Day One achievement, premium packaging, and decal.

Hatsune Miku: Project Diva F will features 38 unique songs (and unfortunately doesn’t come with songs from previous Project Diva games), over 90 costumes and 100 accessories to customize the diva and an “Edit Mode” for players to create and share their own Miku videos.

Interestingly, for Europe it’ll be a digital only affair as the EU version won’t be available in disc form, rather as PSN-exclusive. For the US Project Diva F will be available in both physical and digital forms.

No word on the international release of the Vita version of the game but I sure hope Sega will release that too.

Tales of Symphonia: Unisonant Pack will be releasing in 2014 on the PlayStation 3 and will include HD Remasters of Tales of Symphonia and Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World. The Japanese release of the remaster pack will be on October 10th while the international release will be sometime in 2014.

What’s interesting with Microsoft’s new approach is that aside from a gaming console, the Xbox One will serve as a multimedia box on release.  Aside from streaming services already available for Xbox Live users on the Xbox 360, Microsoft will also be offering the ability to pair the Xbox One with a set-top box via an HDMI pass-through allowing you to  tune channels with your voice, use a TV guide directly from the Xbox, and multitask between gaming, TV, Skype, Internet Explorer, and more.

Software

The Xbox One’s Ui is a combination of the current Xbox dashboard and Windows 8 with live tiles, window-snapping for multitasking and side-scrolling via the Metro interface. Aside from the browser, you’ll also get a few more useful apps like Skype for chats. If you’re wondering how the Xbox One can handle switching from a gaming device to a multimedia device then to a set-top box, you’ll be interested to note that it runs on a total of 3 OS: the Xbox OS, the Windows kernel, and a third that facilitates instant switching and multitasking.

Due to it’s BluRay drive, the new Xbox unfortunately loses it’s backwards compatibility to the Xbox 360 library. For it’s launch library, things are looking bleak as Microsoft has announced that there would be more than 15 exclusive games coming in its first year which includes Forza, Quantum Break, Madden NFL 25, NBA Live 14, FIFA 14, EA Sports UFC, Call of Duty: Ghosts, etc. No word if Microsoft will be offering a cloud-based service similar to the PlayStation 4 for PlayStation 3 titles but seeing as the company will keep the Xbox 360 alongside the Xbox One for the time being, it’s unlikely.

There is currently no price or release date for the Xbox One. What we do know is that you’ll be able to buy one with a Kinect controller by default instead of an add-on package.
