Nintendo updates Wii and DSi against homebrew

Nintendo has just released a couple of firmware updates that is sure to get some people’s blood boiling.

The two pronged assault against piracy target’s the Nintendo Wii and the Nintendo DSi (and the DSi XL). The updates are listed as Firmware Version 4.3 for the Wii and Firmware version 1.4.1U for the DSi.

Both updates are meant to do the same thing for both consoles, disable homebrew (or in this case, hinder pirates from playing illegitimate copies of games).

These updates are underhandedly announced by Nintendo as to “provide behind-the-scenes improvements to system performance.” After installing the update however, the real purpose of the update is to wipe your consoles of anything that’ll allow homebrew on it.

In the case of the Wii, the v4.3 update will wipe the HomeBrew Channel (HBC) as well utilities like WiiFlow. For the DSi, it simply blocks carts (which as I’ve mentioned before, the DSi is just a firmware update away from being cart free).

For those worried about their DSi here’s a list of affected carts:

Acekard 2i, Supercard, DSTwo, M3i Zero, iPlayer and the DSTTi

EZ-Flash Vi, iSmart DS and Hyper R4i are reported to still be working

If you don’t want to be hindered by these updates, there’s only one thing you can do. Don’t update .

Jailbreak your PS3 using an Android Phone!

With the PSJailbreak looking to get no nowhere fast with Sony being able to block it by legal means, is the ability to hack the PS3 lost forever? Apparently not, all you need is an Android Phone to jailbreak your PS3!

While it’s not exactly a cheap alternative to ones who don’t have an Android Phone, for us already on Google’s bandwagon, it’s an interesting development to say the least. No more shelling out $150 for a package that may never arrive! Of course, that Android Phone is quite useless for hacking a PS3 if you don’t already own the console

Requirements:

Download the PS3 hack for Android.
Check if your Android Smartphone is compatible with the hack using the guide below

Important Note: While this hack has been confirmed working (on the phones indicated in the compatibility list at least), you risk the health and warranty of your phone and console. Also it’s important to note that Sony has announced that they have the ability to detect hacked PS3s so take this warning to heart when going online via PSN.

How to install PS3 Jailbreak on your Android Phone

Extract N1-CM6-PSFreedom.tar.gz and copy the contents to your SD card.
Copy PS3-signed.zip and PS3-No-More-signed.zip to your SD card.
Reboot into the recovery console.
Install/flash PS3-signed.zip.
Reboot your phone.
Use ConnectBot or any terminal app and type:
- cd /mnt/sdcard
- su
- insmod psfreedom.ko
Kill the power to your PS3, switch on the back (PS3 Fat) or unplug from the wall (PS3 Slim), and connect your phone via USB.
Re-enable power and press the PS3 power button followed by the eject button in quick succession.
Your PS3 is now hacked! You’ll see “Install Package Files” under GAME on the XMB.

To return your phone to normal just boot back to recovery and flash PS3-No-More-signed.zip. Simple right?

Known bugs:

This will disable wi-fi untill the original boot.img is flashed back.
This will also disable USB mass storage.

Nintendo slashes DSi and DSi XL prices

In light of the revelation of Nintendo’s upcoming portable console the 3DS and the rise in popularity competing portable consoles/gadgets like the iPod Touch, Nintendo has slashed the prices of it’s DSi and DSi XL consoles. Starting September 12, you’ll start seeing both consoles selling for less.

According to the Japanese gaming console maker, both DSi and DSi XL will have their prices marked down by $20 to just $150 and $170 respectively. You’ll note that the mark down doesn’t include to ever popular DS Lite which will remain at it’s $130 price point.

The price adjustment seems to be Nintendo’s way of setting the right market price for the 3DS which is expected to be released and shipped by the end of September.

However, another reason for the price drop is the popularity of Apple’s iPhone and iPod touch which seems to have contributed to lower DS sales. In comparison, the App store has more than 250,000 apps while Nintendo’s consoles tout just around 1,500 titles, and that’s ignoring hardware specifications (remember, some games will work only with the DSi which is known as DSiWare).

Now with both Nintendo’s consoles getting a price drop, there shouldn’t be anything stopping you from getting one right? If you still haven’t decided on getting one, how about some free DSi points to avail of your free DSi games?

No Birth by Sleep for the PSP Go

And yet one more reason not to get a PSP Go. It looks like one by one, companies pushing out PSP games have accepted the fact that the PSP Go is a failed experiment.. or at least are starting to do just that.

This except without the Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep game

With nearly every title released since the launch of the PSP Go has seen a near simultaneous release of it’s digital version on PSN, it’s both surprising and saddening that an AA title like Birth By Sleep won’t be appearing in a digital format. When reached for comment, Square Enix PR firm Ogilvy responded:

“Just found out that there unfortunately are no plans to release KHBBS on PSP Go. If that changes, I will certainly let you know!

On the plus side, the Square Enix representative did say there were “currently no plans,” so that could change sometime in the future. Still, with no UMD Drive on the PSP Go, it’s owners (the sad few I’m afraid) will have to wait for a PSN released version… or at least someone to hack the PSP Go and install CFW on it.

Sony blocks PS3 modchip sale via lawsuit

Just as a PS3 hack was inevitable, so is the legal block that Sony was bound to impose sooner or later.

In this case, the action was sooner as before PSJailbreak started shipping, Sony Computer Entertainment Australia was granted a temporary injunction by the nation’s Federal Court to block the importation and sale of the new PS3 modchips.

So until August 31, none of the modchip retailers in Australian territory will be able to import and distribute the much awaited device.

The court order is as follows:

[The court] orders that up to and including 31 August 2010, the First to Fourth Respondents and each of them, whether by themselves, their servants or agents, be restrained from doing any of the following acts with respect to all and any Universal Serial Bus devices described as “PSJailbreak” [...]:

(a) importing them into Australia with the intention of providing them to another person;
(b) distributing them to another person;
(c) offering them to the public;
(d) providing them to another person; and/or
(e) otherwise dealing in them.

Till the deadline, expect Sony to have a more aggressive stance in convincing the courts in making the injunction permanent.

It’s an interesting development since Sony is using legal grounds to block the sale of the modchip similar to what Nintendo achieved by being able to successfully in ban the sale of R4 (not the R4i for the DSi ) in several parts of the world.

If this legal blockade somehow fails, I think it’s safe to assume that Sony will be pushing a new firmware that will disable the hack that allows users to play downloaded games. How exactly? Well, aside from blocking sale, importation and distribution of the said device, the court has also order the makers (which is an Australian based company) to deliver technical samples of the device to Sony for analysis as part of the case.

If the company behind PSJailbreak pushes through with providing them copies, there’s little doubt Sony will be able to counter these before that deadline is up.. or at least before sales and pre-orders start shipping.

At this point however, it is still unknown what the hack actually does. It does not rely on the OtherOS feature as it was since removed by Sony since the Geohotz incident and some in the community suspect something similar to a Pandora Battery for the PS3, allowing the console to be booted into debug mode and allow unsigned code to run.. but until proven, that’s just speculation. If Sony had it’s way, we’ll probably never know.

If you’ve owned any of the PlayStation consoles (the original PlayStation or PSX, the PS2, the PS3 and the PSP) then you’ve seen the button scheme that they’ve been using on their controllers. Instead of having A-B-C X-Y-Z like what Nintendo did with their controllers, Sony stuck with a colorful and much more recognizable scheme.

PlayStation designer Teiyu Goto explains why.

Just who is Teiyu Goto? Well he’s none other than the father of the PlayStation, the man behind the designs for the original PlayStation, the PlayStation 2 and the PlayStation 3!

So why shapes and colors? In an interview with Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu, it’s all about keeping things simple.

“That was…pretty tough,” he says. “Other game companies at the time assigned alphabet letters or colors to the buttons. We wanted something simple to remember, which is why we went with icons or symbols, and I came up with the triangle-circle-X-square combination immediately afterward. I gave each symbol a meaning and a color.”

“The triangle refers to viewpoint; I had it represent one’s head or direction and made it green. Square refers to a piece of paper; I had it represent menus or documents and made it pink. The circle and X represent ‘yes’ or ‘no’ decision-making and I made them red and blue respectively. People thought those colors were mixed up, and I had to reinforce to management that that’s what I wanted.”

Now before you raise your pitchforks and start screaming that the O and X is actually enter and cancel in OUR version of the consoles, it’s a Japanese thing. In Japan, a circle means yes, and an X means no. Culture differences called for a switch in their respective roles.

Plants vs Zombies coming to Nintendo DS

If you haven’t heard of Plants vs Zombies then you’re probably living under a rock. This awesome tower defense game is by PopCap an has spanned multiple platforms, from the PC, the Mac, the iPhone/iPod Touches to the Xbox via an XBLA version. Now if you Nintendo console owners are feeling left out, don’t worry, Plants vs Zombies is headed for the Nintendo DS as well!

The DS version of the will feature all of the original modes—including adventure, survival, and puzzle—as well as “new and exclusive game content.” No word on what that exclusive content is so well have to sit on this one.

The game will feature the excellent touch controls found in the iPhone and iPad versions of the game. Plants versus Zombies for the Nintendo DS will be released on January 11 for $20.

Is the PS3 really hacked?

An unnamed company claims to have successfully hacked the PS3 via something they call PSJailbreak by using a combination of software and USB dongle that seemingly allows all makes and model of retail PlayStation 3 to copy and run any kind of game code, even with the latest firmware updates in place.

Is the PS3 really compromised? It’s hard to tell since we’ve only seen videos of the hack but the company behind PSJailbreak did send copies of their purported hack to several modchip resellers like Australia-based OzModChips who then posted the some what convincing videos you see below:

Judging from the video, the dongle appears to be activated when the system is booted by holding down the power followed by the eject button. If true, this is the equivalent of the Pandora Battery on the PS3. If true, this is a crushing blow for Sony, especially as potential pirates won’t even need to buy a Blu-ray burner to acquire copied games: the hack works by streaming game data either from the internal HDD or alternatively via USB flash drives or hard disks.

But is it the real deal? Hacker websites are saying it is, while the publicly available game-dumping tool from the “Jailbreak” site installs without the USB dongle on debug PS3s, and does indeed rip retail games, although they do not boot. There have been many fakes in the past – PSJailbreak looks disturbingly authentic.

However, before you go off celebrating, let’s try to do the math in pirating PS3 games.

What you’ll need:

A huge hard drive.. say 1TB = $99, approximately P4,500
A speedy connection. You’ll be downloading roughly files of 25GB – 40GB in size = $80, approximately P2,000 for a 2Mbps connection (in the Phil.)
A blu-Ray burner (optional) = $199, approximately P10,000
Blank BluRay discs (optional) = $10, approximately P500.00

Let’s say you plan to acquire all that, the total expenses would already buy you a second PS3. So ok, let’s say you can muster the expense. How long will you have to download those PS3 rips off the net? This will add electricity cost and of course to your internet bill. By rough estimates, you can download upto 3-4 games in a month using the specs mentioned above but you’ll have to shell out a lot more dough compared to buying them legit, brand new or second hand.

Is pirating the PS3 worth it? Certainly not in the Philippines or any other third world country for that matter but hey, you draw your own conclusion

Blizzard spills new Diablo III details

Fresh from Gamescon 2010 in Germany, Jay Wilson, the game Director for Diablo III has spilled some fresh new info with the upcoming diablo installment. No, it’s not anything remotely close to the game’s release date

Today’s announcement for Blizzard’s highly anticipated “next game” (since most of us who just finished the campaign of StarCraft 2 Wings of Liberty would love to get our hands on Heart of the Swarm any time soon) is the addition of two new aspects to the game’s original formula. Caravans and Artisans. What are Caravans and Artisan and what do they contribute to the game? Find out after the jump.

What is the caravan?

The caravan is a persistent group that follows the heroes across Sanctuary, providing a centralized hub for players to find questgivers, crafters and other important NPCs. As your character moves through the world so too will your loyal band, setting up in specific locations to remain close by should you need them.

Who are the artisans?

In order to access the professions in Diablo III, you’ll need gain the loyalty of various artisans through your travels in Sanctuary. The blacksmith, mystic and jeweler each provide unique service over the course of the game.

What do the artisans offer?

Skilling up your artisans will unlock unique recipes, granting your character access to benefits that may not be found anywhere else in the world. The blacksmith crafts weapons and armor, and can add sockets to some items. The mystic creates scrolls, potions, magical weapons, spell runes, charms, and can also enchant items. The jeweler crafts gems, amulets, and rings. The jeweler can also remove gems from items and can combine gems to improve their quality.

How do I find the artisans?

Finding the artisans will be part of the main quest. Each artisan has been fleshed out to include their own story and quest line.

How do I use the artisans?

You’ll collect loot as a reward for slaughtering the forces of the Burning Hells. Unwanted items can be salvaged in your inventory, converting these goods into raw crafting materials. High level items are salvaged into high level materials. You’ll then take those raw materials and hand them over to the artisans, putting them to work crafting or enchanting for you. Upon returning to the caravan after a lengthy foray, you foray, you may find that the artisans have been hard at work playing their trade for youe benefit.

How do I salvage my items?

Players will find an item while progressing through the main quest that will allow them to convert unwanted gear into crafting materials from the inventory. This item will not take up any inventory space. This should be a more satisfying option for offloading unwanted loot than the alternative — dropping things on the ground or making frequent trips to a vendor.

(Editor’s note: this item, while cube-shaped, is sadly not the Horadric Cube from Diablo’s past. According to Jay Wilson, it’s meant to be an homage of sorts to that cube, but it isn’t the same cube.)

Why are you including crafting professions in an action game?

Professions add depth to the item collection that drives the action of Diablo III. We want to provide players with an alternative way to acquire gear, potions, and other randomly found items. We also want to provide additional forms of customization for players — adding jewels, enchants or sockets to existing gear allows players further characters. Many rare crafting recipes and materials only found as world drops, enhancing the item acquisition process by increasing the diversity of items dropped by monsters.

Interesting? Yep.

The caravan seems like an interesting implementation of the game’s lobby system. Since the caravan’s main benefits will be that your Bnet friends will be close by, it could mean that Diablo III’s multiplayer expanse is massive *crosses fingers for this one.* Will it be better than the old lobbying system? Can’t really say until we see the caravan in action so let’s hold judgment on that one for now.

As for the artisans, WOW. Blizzard has given us more reason to start hoarding stuff for better items lmao. And I thought things couldn’t get worse than it was with Diablo II and it’s expansion . Runes, runes, runes!

Parasite Eve: 3rd Birth Day infestation updates

Things are looking up for the 3rd Birthday! In more ways than one, the upcoming installment to the Parasite Eve Saga will put Brea through an upgrade in the graphics department and an HP meter that’s sure to catch the male populace’s attention. What am I talking about? It’s the mystery of Aya Brea‘s disappearing clothes!

Woke you up with that one huh? The 3rd Birthday’s hit point system disintegrate Aya’s clothes to indicate the damage she’s taken. Not sure how much… damage she can incur but I won’t be amazed to see quite a few guys raising their hands for a chance to beta test the game and find out.

As for changes in the gameplay, you get to choose between a multitude of weapons by pressing the equivalent d-pad button. Your weapons will change as Aya “jacks” different soldiers in the battlefield. This new inventory system is shown in the screenshot below:

As for the gameplay video? We have that too No video of her disintegrating clothes though

Japan gets it’s hands on The 3rd Birthday this Winter. The rest of the world (namely us) will have to wait for the localized version

StarCraft 2 List of Missions

There’s a total 29 campaign missions for StarCraft II’s single player mode. If you missed a few (meaning your total isn’t 29) then you may want to look at this list of StarCraft 2 Missions to check and see which ones you haven’t played before.

The game’s campaign is broken down into several chapters, Mar Sara, Colonists, Artifact, Covert, Rebellion, Prophecy and the Final Missions in Char. Each of these missions have several achievements which you can gain in-game or during story mode. Check out the full guide on StarCraft 2 Achievements for more info.

In some chapters, you get to pick one of two missions to follow (e.g. during Tosh’s mission, you can either go with Break Out or Ghost of a Chance). While you only get to play one of the options for storyline purposes, you can still play it through the Mission Log.

Important Note: Prophecy Missions cannot be replayed. You have to go through the whole campaign to play through it again.

The Raynor missions are the first three in the game. Credits may not be used until after Zero Hour.

Xbox 360 Slim gets hacked

The release of a revamped Xbox 360 model, the Xbox 360 Slim (or Xbox 360 S) has one interesting benefit to Microsoft, and that’s patching past hacks that allowed users to play backed-up copies of original game DVDs.

I’m pretty sure that soon after this video leaked out, someone, somewhere within Microsoft, is terribly displeased.

Here’s a video of the supposed hacked Xbox 360 Slim playing a copied DVD.

Team Xecuter together with Team Jungle & C4E says that they’re close to releasing a version for public consumption.

Starcraft 2′s achievements systems is one of the benefits of being able to connect to Battle.Net by purchasing a legit copy (no achievements for pirates since it requires b.net connectivity). For those who try to OC’d the campaign in an effort to complete everything, the achievements provide some interesting twist to the game’s already awesome game play.

Do note that some minor spoilers are shown here but not much to give away what happens in the game . Most of the achievements can be acquired by simply setting the difficulty on hard.. that way you don’t have to replay things all over again (first on Normal then on Hard).
