For some Hip-Hop and its culture is a means to an end; nothing else appeals to them so they step into the booth to try their luck. For a small minority it truly is a calling. Personal vendettas, every day life and losses allow the pen to become as powerful as any fist or weapon. K Real has lived through enough personal loss and survived his fair share of disruption to take the reigns and make headway through sheer determination.

Born into a family ingrained with a rich and lavish musical history, Grandfather, best friend with Joe Jackson and mother a dancer for James Brown, K Real has never used his family connections for aid. Making strong strides on his lonesome to master the art of entertainment has allowed this Pomona, CA native an opportunity to learn from his own mistakes and benefit from his own hard work. “My family has always been a huge motivation in the music I deliver,” K Real explains. “

Yet growing up on the West Coast, K Real was influenced by the ostentatious and distinctive sound the region boasted. 2Pac N.W.A, Ice Cube, Too $hort are all part of the musical make up he adopted; just as he is inspired by the story telling demeanor of Nas and Rakim. Yet in his own assault on the mic his own daily struggles are the driving force in extraditing personal demons all the while entertaining the masses.

Recognizing that to be a success in the music industry today takes more than just a couple of hit songs, K Real procured a wealth of extensive knowledge behind the scenes. Positioning himself at Pomona’s Fox Theatre, it was here that the bourgeoning MC was exposed to valuable lessons in the art of promoting, booking and marketing. An encounter with Jurassic 5 when signed to Universal allowed K Real to work on their street team and eventually secure a plethora of knowledge to recruit and maintain his own street teams in the Los Angeles area.

A two-year stint in the military resulted in unfathomable accusations that encouraged K Real to once again reinforce his personal armor. After an honorable discharge, the problematic lifestyle that K Real had endured to this point took a new direction. “Extraordinary men are not made from living simple boring lives,” he states as he now plans his strategic assault on the music business. “All I hope to do is get things right this time.”

His ability to reach the masses with his message was also given another outlet in 2007. Having a firm respect for the slain rapper Tupac Shakur, K Real devoted time to the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation (TASF) summer camp in Oakland where he educated the kids on the art of creative writing. “Working for TASF was my way of thanking Afeni and 2Pac for what they have done for the world as well as help to inspire the next generation.”

His most recent single, Deadly Game was written over a year ago in recognition of Oakland’s most revered fallen soldier. “That track came to me once I heard the beat,” K Real explains. “It was written in record time as everything just flowed.” However the significance of the track is now somewhat closer to home having lost his cousin this month. “I want my music to encourage people going through difficult situations not to give up on themselves,” he shares. “If I can make it, so can they.”

Heading up his own Defcon label, a Vio ringtone deal in place, which sees his music available globally through a huge variety of digital media outlets and the highly acclaimed Corination to his credit, a project that saw K Real breaking all musical boundaries imaginable; his comfort zone is almost in sight. Upheld by a relentless ability to educate and entertain K Real has brushed aside the obstacles that have attempted to block him from personal growth and fully comprehends just what needs to be accomplished.

Crime Mob’s musical tale has its roots deep in the streets of Ellenwood, a small suburb outside of Atlanta. “We came up in the same area,” says Cyco Black. “We all went to the same school, that’s how we hit it off really.” When the crew was in their early teens the guys got involved in a little more than their fair share of mischief. Back then they called themselves Crime Mob and were known for being a rowdy bunch. But it was their love of music that brought the six together over a homemade studio where they would develop a style that eventually led them to fame and fortune. “The name [Crime Mob] was made up a long time ago,” says Princess. “We still hold [onto] that name because it’s a part of our history, it’s a reminder of where we came from, but we’ve turned it into a positive thing.”

Soon the group started hitting the streets with their underground CDs, doing countless shows around the City of Atlanta. After a while Crime Mob earned a reputation for putting on exciting shows. One of the highlights of their show was their performance of the underground song, “Knuck if You Buck” – it caused sheer pandemonium. Whenever the beat dropped and the crew started chanting the hook, the clubs would go crazy. Impressed with their talent and performance skills, BME recording artist Lil Scrappy invited them to open up a few shows for him. Little did the group know that it would alter their lives forever. Scrappy had arranged for Lil Jon and BME executives to be at one of the shows and they were thoroughly impressed with what they saw. “Lil Jon and the rest of BME were in the club,” recalls Princess. “When we performed the song the crowd already knew it. So, that sparked their attention.” BME and Crime Mob inked a deal and immediately went into the studio to record. Two weeks later Crime Mob’s self-titled debut was ready. Fueled by the blazing hit single “Knuck if You Buck,” (the second single to reach platinum status in ringtones), Crime Mob’s debut album peaked at number five on the Billboard charts and sold well over two hundred thousand units with little promotions.

Now, just when you thought that it was safe to go to the clubs or turn on your radio and enjoy a nice quiet crime free evening, Cyco Black (20), Diamond (18), Lil Jay (21), Princess (19), and MIG (19) returns with their long-awaited sophomore album entitled Hated On Mostly, an album that features more of the chart-topping, head-busting music for you to rock yo hips and swing them bows to.

According to the group, Hated On Mostly not only represents the next plateau for the group artistically speaking, but it also serves as a big fat smack in the face of the crew’s haters and distracters who were waiting on Crime Mob’s downfall. This record says emphatically that it isn’t gonna happen.

“You know we were young when the first album came out,” explains MIG. “We were still in [high] school and there were haters.”

“A lotta people underestimated us,” adds Diamond. “But people all over the world, white folks, Black folks, green folks still love our music. People didn’t think that Crime Mob would really make it this far.”

Produced by Lil Jay, MIG, Dirty Doc Jam and the Oomp Camp, Hated On Mostly represents a creative milestone in Crime Mob’s artistic career and shakes the dreaded sophomore jinx like a junkie going cold turkey. The main thing that separates Hated On Mostly from the Crime Mob LP can be summed up in one word – maturity. Instead of saturating the album with the tried and true theme of I’ll-beat-yo-ass, the sextet also explore a softer side. For example, one need listen no further than the group’s lead single, “Rock Yo Hips,” featuring label mate, Lil Scrappy. “Rock Yo Hips” is a club-friendly ode to the rotating movement of the female posterior. The hypnotic track is built around a snap-styled beat with a booming bass drum and catchy flute riff. “Rock Yo Hips” leans more toward crunk n’ b than the head busting adrenaline filled beats that Crime Mob is known for.

“Don’t Need Ya,” is a joint that lyrically pits the ladies against the fellas in a mock lovers spat. “Princess came up with that one,” explains Diamond. She just was like on some kinda angry 3-6 type of stuff. Let the females go against the males. We spoke for the ladies and the guys spoke from the male point of view. That record is crazy. We had a good time doing that one.” “Don’t Need Ya” chops up a classic sample of Bobby Womack’s hit “If You Think You’re Lonely Now,” into a sweet melodic track that forms the perfect sonic juxtaposition to Crime Mob’s aggressive flow and combative lyrics.

Another song that stands out on Hated On Mostly is “Circles,” a haunting song about the painful agony of being in a dysfunctional relationship. Using a sample from the classic Friends Of Distinction song “Going in Circles,” the smooth out R&B-tinged song is bound to be one of the biggest tracks on the album and no doubt will take Crime Mob to the next plateau of success. “We really wanted to put it on our album to try something different,” says MIG. “Dirty Doc Jam brought us the track with the sample already in it and we really liked it. So we just sparked it up right there.”

But don’t let these smoothed out tracks fool you. In no way has the Mob gone soft. Rest assured that there are plenty of trunk-rattling, angst filled bow-throwing club anthems like the rowdy “Who You Be,” the badass jam “2nd Look,” and the menacing title-tune to keep die hard crunk fans more than satisfied.

Capone made a name for himself as one half of the dynamic duo, Capone-N-Noreaga. The Queens based group met in the early 90’s at a Correctional Facility in upstate New York. They recorded their first album, War Report, which was released in 1997 on Penalty. In 2001, the group released The Reunion on Tommy Boy, which went gold.

AZ first came to prominence by appearing on Nas’ landmark album Illmatic on the song “Life’s a Bitch” (1994)—he was the only guest emcee to appear on that album. After a bidding war, AZ signed with EMI, and soon released Doe Or Die (1995) to more critical acclaim than commercial sales. The album’s lead single, “Sugar Hill”, became AZ’s only major commercial success as a solo artist, reaching the top 25 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and achieving Gold status. AZ’s EMI contract was transferred to sister label Noo Trybe Records/Virgin Records when the EMI Label Group was shut down. In 1997, he and Nas appeared in a Sprite commercial. AZ signed with Motown/Universal Records and released 9 Lives.[1]. In 2002, he released Aziatic. A single from the album, “The Essence,” was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group. [1]The video to its first single, “I’m Back” received moderate MTV2 play.

In 2004 AZ was going to drop “Final Call”. It got pushed back multiple times and heavily bootlegged until it was scrapped. Instead, A.W.O.L. was released in late 2005. [1]. He has made a further two albums The Format in 2006 and his latest album Undeniable was released on April 1, 2008.
