How have you been all this while? I really missed chatting and sharing yours’ and mine experience! I was unable to catch up with you all, as I was busy setting up my own company, BlueBit Systems. In the process, I worked with several clients with different mind sets and varied requirements. This really helped me in a much deeper understanding of online marketing.

What I realized during the course is SEO is more than optimizing a set of only a few keywords; it is a part of bigger and more synchronized world which is helping companies to gain recognition and win virtual, and finally, the real market.

Optimizing the site for a set of keywords, the basic SEO technique, is only one aspect of the industry and we need to grow beyond that. We need to understand the real power of Adwords and harness social media as part of our marketing campaign. The real traffic comes from here, and helps in bringing the due recognition to your brand. The companies, who understand this, have increased their customer base and penetrated their brand.

Let me take one thing at a time, this will help us to understand the two ideas clearly and effectively. I will begin with Adwords as this is the most crucial topic and the moment we are able to understand the essence of this word, we are sure to place ourselves strategically via the online media.

Adwords is online marketing tool developed by Google. Through this we can check the rating and ranking of the keywords and our ad copy, which in turn helps in making our site better in terms of usability and accessibility. Your site will pop up only when someone is searching for the kind of products or services offered by your company.  It is a more assured way of getting prospective traffic and brings revenue. It even enhances your presence on more established sites relevant to your business, which are already receiving loads of relevant traffic who might already be interested in your product.

Social Media – as the term itself implies ‘Maintaining social interactions with people directly’.

I am sure you must be a very frequent visitor to Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn. Have you ever thought about using these sites for the marketing purpose?

If you have not, then it is high time to start thinking in that direction. Through a networking site, you can very easily stay connected with the target audience. In fact it establishes target contact and helps in understanding their demand and need, where is the saturation level and how can you grow as a friendly brand.

Ok, so now you are all set. You have created a blog and leaning back at the chair just thinking what to write about! Aaah!!! This is the biggest thing that happens with each one of us and that’s why many people refrain from writing. This, in blogosphere, is known as ‘the writer’s block’. Overcoming writer’s block is not difficult. You don’t just have to think. Spare some time from your busy schedule and start writing. Start jotting down whatever comes to your mind. You read an article in newspaper today and want to convey your thoughts on it… write it down!

Hey! It started raining outside all of a sudden. What a pleasant weather! Birds chirping, sun shining, people going to work… Just write down what you feel at the moment. You will love it whenever you read your blog the next time. Tell your friends and family about it. They will be happy to read your nice random thoughts.

For a beginner, topic is not important. Once you learn the art of writing, you can write on any topic of your choice. May be later you can write a book by writing a few words in morning and other few in evening!

Do’s and Don’ts of Blogging

There are a few things that you should remember while writing a blog:

• Don’t publish any personal or private information. It may harm you.
• If you want to publish something against someone, do at your own risk.
• Be very polite and use an impressive language.
• Arouse the interest of readers with your words.
• Choose the subject you have a passion for. It should reflect your knowledge about the subject.
• Make blogging your hobby.
• Put some of your valuable time in writing the post and have patience.
• If you are not one of the lucky god-gifted writers, don’t worry, you will learn from practice.
• Do not violate someone’s copyright.
• If you want to quote something you find interesting, do always mention the source.
• Read other’s blogs to get ideas.

What does caffeine mean?

• Faster search
  Caffeine is a chemical compound which acts as a stimulant. Similarly, caffeine update is a stimulant for Google’s indexing infrastructure. When you a type a search query in the search bar of Google, caffeine – the stimulant, come into play and uplifts the pages residing on data centres quickly. This means that you will see search results much faster.
  
  Old Google crawling and indexing was structured in layers. Some layers were indexed faster, while the main layer could be updated in a couple of weeks. This means that a bunch had to wait until the whole layer was processed and pushed live. This added a significant delay in when the page was crawled by Googlebot and when it was published. Caffeine resulted in a 50% fresher index.

• Increased storage, means more amount of information
  Seeing the future trends of internet space and increasing amount of content, Google has increased the storage capacity of its data center.




• Increased flexibility
  Caffeine offers more flexibility in storing documents. When Google stores a document, it stores various types of information along with it. E.g., which external pages link to it, what anchor text is used, etc. Now, it will be able to store much more type of details with a document.

One thing that came into light is that currently, Google was able to associate one page with only one country, but with caffeine update, it will be able to associate that page with several countries.

Note that this is not an algorithm change. It’s only the change in indexing infrastructure. So, there will not be any effect on rankings of websites.

What SEOs can do for it?
There is nothing you can do actually other than keeping your site fresh and updated.

Google have deliberately manipulated their back link query system so that it only lets you see a small percentage of backlinks that it recognizes.

The webmasters can view the backlinks of their site through webmaster tools interface. But one can’t view all the backlinks of third party site through Google.

Recently, Google announced an improvement in blogroll detection which further reduces the number of links displayed by link: query. According to it, if you are linked from the blogroll section of a blog or any other part of the page that doesn’t change with the content, you won’t show up in the results of link query. This is indicative of the fact that Google is emphasizing on contextual links that are relevant to the context of the blog or site. Advertorial links in footer or blogroll will not be given much weightage.

Thus, to increase your link popularity, create unique and impressive content for your website to which people will link naturally, rather than wasting time linking to lots of low quality sites. It’s the quality of links that matters most, not the quantity.

While not giving any advantage to keyword stuffing, Google came up with the idea of using external links to rank the websites. Webmasters, having the older conception in mind, believed that Google too uses the keyword meta tag.

Thus, since its inception, Google had never used the keyword meta tag, since people started to stuff it up with keywords even irrelevant to their website. Other search engines might use it but Google, which is the major source of traffic for websites, don’t bother about it.

Finally, after lots of confusions and contradictions, Google officially announced on their webmaster blog that they DO NOT use keyword or keywords meta tag for ranking in search results. Although this is an earlier known fact, but most of the SEOs didn’t believed it and they had the misconception that keyword tag plays a major role in getting higher rankings. It doesn’t solve any purpose other than helping your competitors to steal the keywords which you had chosen after putting in lots of time and efforts.

Google definitely use other meta tags, such as description tag, which is displayed in search results, if it is informative. So next time if some one uses your brand name in his keywords tag, don’t bother to sue him. It’s not going to benefit him or harm you in any way.
