Benitez to risk Torres, Gerrard against Birmingham

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is ready to risk BOTH Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres tonight against Birmingham City.

The Sun says it is a desperate bid to get Liverpool's season back on track.

The Reds boss admits neither of his two superstars is fit enough to last 90 minutes, as they both battle against recurring groin problems.

And Benitez will tell the managers of England and Spain it would be pointless picking the duo for next week's international friendlies.

But with Liverpool frantic to turn around a run of just one win in eight games, both are likely to be pressed into action at Anfield.

Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas insists he can do better after their 4-1 win at Wolves.

Fabregas' goal was his ninth of the season.

But he insisted: "Because I am scoring it looks like I am playing better, but I don't look at it like this. Maybe in other years I was getting in the same position but I wasn't scoring.

"I don't think I was at my best against Wolves but because I scored a goal it looks different. I know how to measure my performance and what I have to improve on."

Arsenal ace Robin van Persie is excited about their Premiership prospects.

The Gunners face Wolves this weekend and Van Persie admits he's already eyeing the table leadership.

"We are looking sharp at the moment," Van Persie said.

"Everyone wants to play together and as long as we are enjoying ourselves together we can continue like this."

The Arsenal striker added: "We have one game in hand and are two points off Chelsea so if they lose points we will be in a good position.

"One of the top two will lose points this weekend, so if we want to challenge for the title we have to win."

Manchester United fullback Patrice Evra admits Chelsea away is the one game he is desperate to win.

It'll be no easy task though with United up against a side who have plundered 19 goals in their last five games.

"We have to make sure we keep a clean sheet against Chelsea," Evra told MUTV.

"When people ask me which game I want to win this season it's the game against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. So it's going to be a very important match for us."

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce admits he's delighted to have landed former Tottenham striker Darren Bent in the summer.

Bent will return to his former club on Saturday having scored eight goals for his new employers and with Bruce insisting he has nothing to prove in north London.

Bruce said: "Whether it was a personality clash - we all have them - whether they didn't get on, I'm not quite so sure.

"The big thing for me is whatever happened with Spurs, it has allowed me to get Darren Bent to come to Sunderland, which I am delighted about however it has come about, because he has done very well for us.

"But that's as far as it goes, as far as I am concerned - and I hope that's the same for Darren.

"He wanted to come up here - it was never an issue to move out of London to come here. I think he has enjoyed the north-east - certainly, he has enjoyed playing football, which when you are playing, is what you want to do."

In the wake of Stan Kroenke now being on a brink of a takeover of Arsenal, manager Arsene Wenger admits he considered buying into the club.

Wenger was tempted to invest his own money in Arsenal stock, but decided against it.

"I thought about it, but I felt that always I should try to do the job with a good work ethic and not to be accused that any decision was in my personal interest," he said.

Liverpool’s Torres may undergo hernia operation

Star Liverpool striker Fernando Torres may require a hernia operation after flying to Spain to see a specialist.

The Spain international has been struggling with a groin problem for most of the season and it seems to be only getting worse, causing great concerns amongst the Liverpool camp.

Anfield medical staff have been trying to get past the problem by easing Torres’ training regime and resting him from less important matches but things have not eased up and he has sought further advice in Valencia to address the problem once and for all.

A decision on whether or not Torres will undergo surgery will be made today when the Reds’ medical team investigate further and consult with doctors in Spain to determine the best path to take.

If Torres was to have an operation, now would be the perfect time as there is an international break next weekend meaning he may only miss one match with Liverpool.

Midfielder Joe Cole and Chelsea have undergone talks in regards to a new contract.

The 27-year olds contract expires at the end of the season and following his recent successful return from injury, the Blues are keen to retain him at Stamford Bridge.

New chief executive Ron Gourlay confirmed that the club and Cole were in discussions about a new deal for the England international.

"We are already in discussions with Joe," Gourlay told Chelsea TV.

"The situation is that he is coming to the end of his contract, he is 28-years-old on the day of the Manchester United game and we're entering into the period where Joe is looking to negotiate his new contract.

"That process has started, Joe has made it very clear that he wants to stay with the football club and I'm sure in the coming months we will be able to work something out."

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has revealed he would love to remain at Old Trafford for the remainder of his playing days.

The 24-year old has rejected calls from his former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo to join Real Madrid, saying he would rather stay in Manchester and try and emulate the feats of veteran winger Ryan Giggs.

“The way Giggsy's life is, you've got to have respect for the way he handles himself," said Rooney.

"You look at the things he done, the things he's won and for me he's the perfect role model.

"I hope I can reach 800-odd appearances for United. The number of games Giggsy's played is unbelieveable and if I can get anywhere near that I'd be delighted.

"I've always said that I'd like to end my career here and if I could emulate what Giggsy has done at this club then it would be an amazing achievement."

Chelsea look at selling stadium naming rights

Chelsea are preparing to sell the naming rights for Stamford Bridge despite anger on Tyneside after Newcastle revealed that St James' Park will be called sportsdirect.com@St James’ Park until the end of the season.

Chelsea's new chief executive Ron Gourlay has unveiled a similar plan, reports the Daily Mail.

He stressed that Chelsea need the millions such a lucrative sponsorship deal would secure if they are to compete with rivals like Manchester United and Arsenal.

Gourlay, who took the reins from Peter Kenyon this week, said: "We understand that this is a sensitive issue for our fans and that is why we would keep the name Stamford Bridge in any deal.

"What we are not prepared to happen, and I am sure our fans will appreciate this, is allow our rival clubs in England and Europe to gain a competitive advantage over us in terms of the revenue they can generate through either expanding the capacity of their existing stadia or moving to a new stadium and then invest that upside in their team or the club.

"Those possibilities are not open to Chelsea for the foreseeable future because of the restrictions in expanding our stadium and the issues around finding a new site, so that means we have to be creative and look at our sponsorship architecture and see if we can create new value and new opportunities that keeps us competitive.

"Retaining the heritage of the stadium is paramount to considering such a move but we think that is achievable and on that basis we would enter into discussions over naming rights with the right partner for Chelsea."

Lampard goes down memory lane to improve his game

Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard watches old games from his Blues career in order to help him improve.

"I am a big watcher of old games actually," he told his club's official website.

"It is nice to look back at games since I've been at Chelsea, on Chelsea TV or on video. I've got a lot of good memories and it is good to see them and I even watch some mundane games from a few years ago, just to see how we were playing those days. Sometimes you forget little bits.

"I just flick through and if there is a game from a few years ago I'll watch it out of interest, if not the full 90 minutes then patches, because your game, personally and as a team, definitely changes over the years.

"I am quite critical. I think oh my God, I can't believe I'm making those mistake or moves. Sometimes it is quite cringey to see things you did and it is quite bad just to see how young you look and realise that the years have passed.

"You do realise that you have come a long way, particularly from the first season or two I was at Chelsea. It is nice to see the progress.

"When I watch those old games, I see the different ways I did the running. With experience you run at different times. But it's not just that. My involvement in games in the first year or two here was a lot less than now.

"That is probably just a general growing of yourself and confidence. You feel you can take more control of games."

And Lampard still thinks that there is room for improvement in his game.

"I still feel the need to add new things to my game now. I am very critical if I watch matches and I will always try to add stuff. I've had that throughout my career," he added.

"The basics in my game are hard work and attitude, but if I'm feeling on top of it then I enjoy trying a few things, whether it be a flick or a pass. I'm fortunate to play in a good team where there is a lot of strength around and if things are going well you can try things. When you are struggling you keep it simple.

"I've tried a couple of those passes – some will come off and some won't. I wouldn't have had the confidence or the quality to do it as a youngster.

"Now with the movement we have around, the way defences are now – much tighter than they were – you have to try something different to open a defence. If you can throw in a dummy, look one way and pass the other, sometimes it can open them up."

Owen calm about shock England recall chance

Manchester United striker Michael Owen is calm about a shock recall to the England squad this week.

Owen is in line to be included in coach Fabio Capello's squad for the friendly against Brazil in Qatar following injuries to Emile Heskey (Aston Villa) and Carlton Cole (West Ham).

“I don’t know really. I don’t think about what he’s (Fabio Capello) thinking in many ways. I don’t think there are any secrets about my game," said Owen.

"Everyone can see what I’ve done over a period of time, they know what type of player I am and other things I’m not so good at but you also notice things that I would be good at so I’m not going to start a campaign on if Michael Owen shouldn’t be in the England or should be this or that.

"I think everyone knows so I’d prefer other people to decide obviously, but other people to talk about the merits of whether I should or shouldn’t rather than myself because I’ve never been one to blow my own trumpet.”

Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina has urged teammates to fight on after last night's setback.

The Reds were left stunned after being held to a 1-1 draw by Lyon at the Stade Gerland on Wednesday evening.

"I am really disappointed because I think we played one of our best games of the season so far, but we did not get the result we wanted," Reina told Liverpoolfc.tv.

"I thought we'd done enough to win. We didn't deserve to lose at home when we played Lyon, and we didn't deserve to draw here, but that's the way it is and we have to face it.

"We were really unlucky but it's the way things are going at the moment. We have to keep fighting while we have a chance.

"At the moment we are not in the best situation, but I think we have a strong character and enough quality to sort things out.

"All we can do is play with desire and passion and try to be more consistent."

Fletcher: Beating Chelsea important psychologically

Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher admits they would gain a mental edge on Chelsea if they can win in London this weekend.

United are trailing behind Premiership leaders Chelsea in the current standings.

"There's a long way to go yet in the title race, but Sunday's game could be important psychologically," he told MUTV. "We'll just concentrate on ourselves - we know we're capable of going there and winning. It won't be easy, but we'll go there with a game plan and the manager will have a lot of options for the side he wants to pick and we'll try and get a result."

After years of duking it out for top honours at home and abroad, United and Chelsea have few secrets. Nevertheless, Fletcher insists the reigning champions are capable of inflicting a rare home defeat on the Blues.

"They're a top side," he said. "We've both been challenging for the title over the last five or six years and there's great respect between the two sides. We know what to expect, it'll be a great challenge for us at Stamford Bridge. They've got a great record there, but it's up to us to go there and try and get the win."

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger insists they do not need to win the Champions League to be considered an elite club.

While Joe Cole says being Europe's No1 would lift Chelsea into the top bracket, Wenger insists Arsenal are already there.

"You want to win the Champions League," Wenger told arsenal.com. "You are not in the Champions League not to win it.

"Chelsea are a little bit like Arsenal; they are flirting with the cup, they have not grabbed it yet.

"I consider ourselves as an elite club because we are in the top eight seeds of Europe and we are with only two clubs who have achieved 12 consecutive times to play in the Champions League."

The manager added that after recent near-misses in the competition, he believes Arsenal's time will come.

"We have been in the final, we have been in the semi-final and at some stage I think being here every year we will win it," he said.

Arsenal fullback Gael Clichy is facing two months on the sidelines.

The French left-back, 24, is suffering from a stress fracture of his lower back. He will be replaced by Kieran Gibbs for the visit of AZ Alkmaar tonight.

Boss Arsene Wenger said: "It is a big blow. Gael had a problem last season but on the other side of his vertebrae.

"It is a gradual thing. He could play pain-free but it got worse after games.

"We had a scan on Monday and saw he had a fracture. It will be between one month and two months."

It is a massive setback for the Gunners, coming just 24 hours after striker Nicklas Bendtner was ruled out for a month with a groin problem.

Notts County chief Sven Goran Eriksson admits he rejected the Sweden job to stay at Meadow Lane.

Eriksson revealed he snubbed Sweden as he could not balance it with his role at Notts County.

He said: "I was offered the job and I said no thank you. They wanted me to do two jobs. I would have felt bad being in Sweden when I should have been in Nottingham."

Hiddink warns Tottenham's Pavlyuchenko of Russia place

Russia coach Guus Hiddink has warned Roman Pavyluchenko he cannot expect a place in his team if he cannot get off the bench at Tottenham.

Hiddink says Pavlyuchenko's lack of match practice means he can only expect a bit-part role in Russia's World Cup play-off against Slovenia later this month.

Hiddink said: "I'm seriously concerned about his position at Tottenham and perhaps he should think about how he can get more playing time.

"But despite all his problems with match practice, Roman has special qualities: in almost every match he has one or two chances to score, and he often takes them.

"Therefore, we shouldn't exclude him from the national team completely. If the match against Slovenia is not going our way, Pavlyuchenko should get his chance."

The former Chelsea boss watched Pavlyuchenko in training with his club last week and had the chance to quiz Spurs boss Harry Redknapp.

"Redknapp admits that Roma have talent,' said Hiddink. 'But he needs to work to see this talent. At Tottenham, Pavlyuchenko has very serious competitors: Robbie Keane, Jermain Defoe, Peter Crouch.

"Of course, it's not of my business to determine what Pavlyuchenko should do in the future. Maybe he still has a place at Tottenham, but I certainly would like him to play more often."
