The news comes after the Kansas Department of Corrections spent $170,000 to ensure pipe insulation, ceiling tile and flooring was free of hazardous material.

The remediation work on the Lansing and Winifield prisons is estimated at $75,000. The project includes replacing pipe wrapping and ceiling tile.

Abestos is known to cause mesothelioma, a dangerous and aggressive cancer which forms after asbestos fibers latch onto the lining of the stomach, lungs or heart. Because of the long latency period of the disease, the cancer has a low survival rate.

The state isn’t required to remove the asbestos immediately but plans to act quickly as to prevent injury to inmates, staff or the public.

Anderson’s husband John was employed with Exxon’s Linden Bayway Refinery from 1969 to 2004. Bonnie laundered his clothes, which contained asbestos, often having to shake the dust out of the clothes. This exposure caused Bonnie to develop mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma is a rare but aggressive cancer that forms when asbestos fibers attack the lining of the lungs, stomach or heart. The disease has a long latency period and a low survival rate. Anderson developed malignant peritoneal mesothelioma after the fibers attacked the lining in her abdomen.

John Anderson was awarded $500,000. Exxon has yet to release whether they will appeal the ruling to a higher court. The case is the first instance of a secondary exposure lawsuit being upheld in appellate court.

Since then, the county has spent $71.6 million to revamp the four-story 97,236-square-foot structure.

Superior Court presiding Judge Adrienne Grover said court operations will be moved to the north wing over Columbus day weekend. During the abatement and reconstruction the east and west wings of the building held court as well as several off site portables.

Asbestos exposure is the main cause of mesothelioma, an aggressive cancer that affects the lining of the lungs, stomach or heart. As the disease is often found in its advanced stages, it is hard to treat and often fatal.

The new wing features 11 courtrooms, executive offices, new areas for court-related business, family waiting rooms and drug screening rooms.

Superintendent Tim Taylor said that two inches of water flooded the building after a pipe broke last Wednesday. As of Saturday, the floor was beginning to dry but the floor tiles were peeling, revealing asbestos glue.

Horizon Environmental will remove the glue today. Once completed they will run air quality and surface quality tests on the building. Should the building comply with safety standards, new tiles will be installed and waxed.

Asbestos is dangerous because exposure is the cause of mesothelioma, a rare and aggressive cancer that affects the lining of the lungs, stomach and heart. The disease is very often fatal as it is usually detected in its advanced stages.

The project is anticipated to take two weeks to complete. “Obviously, our big concern here is not speed but the safety of the students,” Taylor said.

The soil on the 5.9 acre plot is contaminated with asbestos.

The land was last used during World War II when Camp Abbot was located on the premises. The facility included 98 buildings, most of which contained asbestos. After the buildings were demolished the asbestos settled in the soil.

The land is currently used for sledding in the winter, but remains uninhabited and unused during the rest of the year. The Sunriver Owners Association wants to use the land to develop an aquatics and multi-use park. The project is estimated at $18.9 million, including clean-up.

Asbestos exposure is the primary cause of mesothelioma, a rare and aggressive cancer that attacks the lining of the lungs, stomach or heart. The disease is often fatal as early diagnosis is rare.

Should the plans to use the land as a park be dismissed, clean-up and monitoring of the site alone is estimated at $3 million.

The asbestos was found in the piping and concrete slabs in one section of the structure. In order to remove and properly dispose of the hazardous material Mayor Brian Snedecor has allocated $30,000 for asbestos abatement.

Asbestos has been identified in the horn tower and basement of the building. Borough Administrator Leonard Nicolosi and Mayor Patrick McHale are in the process of contacting a company to conduct air quality tests on the fire house. Bids from A Mac Contracting and environmental engineering firm Detail Associates have both been submitted.

McHale has plans to completely remove the asbestos from the building rather than encapsulate it citing that a complete abatement will be more practical and cost efficient long-term.

The $359,000 project, which began last week, includes removal of floor tile in the building.

JAG Environmental of North Syracuse was awarded the abatement. Although school is not in session, the building will remain closed for the duration of the project.

The abatement is part of a larger renovation project estimated at $17 million. The job will renovate the school, which has not been updated since it was constructed in 1956. Contractors for the rest of the project will be awarded on August 16.

The land, which includes 11 acres along the Passaic River and seven acres in the Great Swamp Wildlife Refuge, was added to the nation’s list of most hazardous sites in 1983 as part of a larger, 60-acre New Jersey site. For over 20 years, National Gypsum Company manufactured and disposed asbestos containing products on the land.

Over the course of five years the site has been cleaned up and the EPA has monitored the caps placed on-site. Recently, the EPA has declared the two sites to have safe levels of asbestos.

Asbestos has been identified as a cause of mesothelioma, a cancer that forms in the lining of the lungs, stomach or heart. The disease is often found in its late stages making it difficult to treat.

The EPA will revisit the site in five years to ensure continued safety.
