Cedar Bluffs Public Schools officials say that the test results indicate the asbestos is present only in the spray-on surface portion of the ceiling on the elementary school.

“That’s the best news that we could have hoped for,” Superintendent Joel Bohlken said.

The ceiling is 40 years old, and is in need of repair because of water damage. “If it [asbestos] would have been in the plaster, then we would have had to remove the whole ceiling,” Bohlken said, adding that it has yet to be determined what the most cost-effective method of asbestos removal would be. The school district is currently accepting bids from asbestos removal specialists, and will compare the costs of removing just the spray-on layer as opposed to removing the entire ceiling.

Removing asbestos is costly and painstaking, as many precautions must be taken to prevent the material from becoming airborne. Inhaling these tiny particles of asbestos can lead to serious health problems. Asbestos exposure is conclusively linked to the development of mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer.

Mesothelioma affects less than 3,000 Americans each year, and while there are palliative treatment methods available, including chemo, there is no known cure. The disease typically lies dormant for up to fifty years before an individual begins to suffer from mesothelioma symptoms, and the majority of patients lose their battle with this cancer in less than two years following diagnosis.

The bids are expected by the February 15, Bohlken said.

About 80 residents met with U.S. Postal Service representatives last week to discuss their options. The post office in Port Byron was shut down last month when the roof began to leak. There are a number of other problems plaguing the site as well, including what are believed to be asbestos-laden floor tiles. Postal customers in Port Byron have had to travel to Hampton, Illinois to get their mail or make use of other post office services. Hampton is about six miles away.

Sara Lindauer, a postal service review investigator, explained that there are basically three options: moving the post office into a new building in Port Byron, moving back into the old post office if it is repaired, or simply not having a post office in Port Byron.

Lori Cross, manager of post office operations for the area, added that the repair of the post office building could be both expensive and time-consuming. “There are floor tiles cracking and they appear to be asbestos floor tiles; the retaining wall is crumbling, and there may be a problem with mold,” she said. “All of those repairs would have to be made before we could move back in.”

Asbestos exposure is conclusively linked to the development of mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer. Mesothelioma affects less than 3,000 Americans each year. The disease typically lies dormant for up to fifty years before an individual begins to suffer from mesothelioma symptoms, but may kill some patients within mere weeks of being diagnosed.

Local Scott Reynolds hopes action is taken soon. “We’ve suffered damages,” he said. “It’s costing us time — and gasoline at nearly $3 a gallon — to drive to Hampton to collect our mail.”

During the month of January alone, the EPA removed nearly 30 tons of asbestos and asbestos-contaminated debris from the site, along with over 2,700 pounds of waste oil and other hazardous materials. The cleanup at the site had been ongoing since 1988. The 30-acre site was once home to a mill that has been abandoned for years. Despite the fact that the asbestos is gone, the site still needs a lot of work before it could be considered safe to use. “They still have a long way to go,” said Walpole Health Director Robin Chapell.

According to EPA Project Manager David Lederer, further work at the site will include excavating contaminated soil from the site and monitoring groundwater. Chapell said the town’s aquifer is safe and the EPA found no evidence of airborne asbestos particles during their air monitoring procedures.

Exposure to airborne asbestos particles has been conclusively linked to the development of mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer. While there are palliative treatment methods available, including chemo, there is no known cure for mesothelioma. The disease typically lies dormant for up to fifty years before an individual begins to suffer from mesothelioma symptoms. However, the cancer kills most patients within 24 months of being diagnosed.

Lederer said the EPA believes the total cost for the cleanup might be as much as $13 million.

Now, residents and tourists might have to wait until summer to visit the pier. City officials purchased the pier last year after the owner allowed it to fall into disrepair. Ongoing work at the pier had nearly wrapped up, and officials had hoped to re-open the pier this month. However, workers recently discovered asbestos in the restaurant area of the pier. This material was used for decades in a variety of building materials, but is now known to cause serious health problems.

According to the website of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, “Exposure to asbestos increases your risk of developing lung disease…In general, the greater the exposure to asbestos, the greater the chance of developing harmful health effects…Fibers embedded in lung tissue over time may cause serious lung diseases including asbestosis, lung cancer, or mesothelioma. Smoking increases the risk of developing illness from asbestos exposure.”

Mesothelioma is a rare type of cancer that affects less than 3,000 Americans each year. While there are palliative treatment methods available, including chemotherapy, there is no known cure. The disease typically lies dormant for up to fifty years before an individual begins to suffer from mesothelioma symptoms. Sadly, many patients succumb to mesothelioma within 2 years of being diagnosed.

Local officials say that more work is still needed at the pier site. Officials say that now the pier will likely remain closed until June, when it should reopen just in time for prime beach season.

This new treatment method is known as “chemoembolisation”, and works by injected cancer-fighting drugs directly into a tumor. The treatment is already in use in Germany, but UK health officials argue that the technique is too new and too untested for them to support.

One UK mesothelioma patient has undergone the treatment, and said that it has transformed his quality of life. Ron Bonfield, age 70, spent the equivalent of tens of thousands of dollars out of his own pocket to undergo chemoembolisation. He is now in remission. However, he is still angered by the fact that he had to pay for his own treatment. “I’m quite upset, knowing that there is a treatment out there that can prolong my life, not just by months, but by years and also give me a quality of life. But [UK health officials] seem to bury their head in the sand and don’t want to know about it.”

Dawn Veal, a nurse, agrees with Ron. “It’s so frustrating really because chemoembolisation is actually used, the technique is used in hospitals in this country…But it’s used for liver cancer. The drugs are actually recognized by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence, who audit medications in this country. So we have the drugs, we have the technique, what we need now is a trial to allow people to actually explore this technique for extension for life.”

Mesothelioma is caused almost exclusively by asbestos exposure. Generally speaking, the cancer lies dormant for many decades, but can cause death within months of the onset of symptoms. Geoffrey Cox, a member of Parliament, also supports Ron. “At the moment Ron Bonfield is not in need of treatment. His condition has stabilized and that is extraordinary for this cancer. All he wants is the certainty of knowing that should he need to resort to this treatment again [someone else] will finance it.”

In Newark, New Jersey, many locals are rejoicing after being told that the decrepit Douglass-Harrison Homes housing complex will undergo demolition this month. The housing complex, which is over 70 years old, has been an eyesore for many years.

“I just want to thank God that the Douglass-Harrison buildings are finally going to come down,” said Central Ward councilman Charles Bell. “After the suits, and counter suits, and all the litigation that took place, it’s finally been put to rest.”

Still, many other locals are skeptical, saying that this is not the first time a demolition project has been announced. Many residents say that they will not believe it until they see it. “I can’t tell you the number of timelines we’ve been given over the last three years,” said local Charone Montayne.

Due to the advanced age of the building, concerns were raised about the debris generated during the demolition process. According to local sources, the contractors working on the project will adhere to “a comprehensive asbestos, dust and infestation plan [that] would protect residents during demolition.”

Asbestos exposure has often been linked to the development of mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that affects thousands of new patients in America each year. Mesothelioma can take up to fifty years to develop after a person’s initial exposure to asbestos fibers. It is unfortunate that the majority of patients succumb to this aggressive form of cancer not long after the onset of symptoms. Generally speaking, most patients pass away within 24 months of being diagnosed, with some patients lasting only a few weeks or months.

Work on the project is expected to wrap up in June.

According to both Unions WA and the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA), Chevron, who was leading the project, failed to take measures to protect the health and safety of workers on the site.

Specifically, union officials say that Chevron failed to inform workers on the site that the drums they were in charge of clearing away contained asbestos. These drums were later knocked over, spilling asbestos and possibly posing a health risk to workers and other people in the vicinity.

According to Unions WA secretary Simone McGurk, tests have revealed the presence of both blue and white asbestos. “Unions raised this issue with Chevron over a week ago, but so far there has been no response,” McGurk said.

MUA secretary Chris Cain added that, “It seems that asbestos has spilled onto the pallets and the dirt surrounding the work area.”

Asbestos exposure is conclusively linked to the development of mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer.
A Chevron spokeswoman said, “Everyone involved should be assured that Chevron places the highest priority on the health and safety of its employees.”

A specialist firm has been hired to take on the project, and crews of workmen have moved into the former Woolworths store to start the asbestos abatement process. The asbestos removal is a preliminary measure being taken prior to the change of ownership at the retail site. The former Woolworths store will soon be home to a discount outlet store known as Poundland. The Woolworth’s site has laid vacant for over a year. Now, workers from hazardous waste specialists Pectel have taken over the site for the time being.

Former Woolworths manager Jason Barker told local reporters: “There’s asbestos in all the ceilings on both sales floors and right throughout the offices. It’s just everywhere – it’ll cost thousands [of pounds] to remove it….When I was there we had 300 tiles removed and replaced and the bill for that was £70,000 (about $114,000 in American currency)– shifting the lot of them is going to be very pricey.”

The removal of asbestos is expensive due to the precautions that must be taken to prevent the material from becoming airborne. Asbestos exposure is conclusively linked to the development of mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer. The disease typically lies dormant for up to fifty years before an individual begins to suffer from mesothelioma symptoms, and the majority of patients lose their battle with this cancer in less than two years after being told that they are ill.

Mark Roberts, Poundland’s head of store development, said: “Poundland does have an asbestos management policy in place for instances like this when new stores have been taken over and unfortunately carry asbestos. The issue at the new Scarborough store is currently being investigated and the asbestos is being removed.”

St. Lawrence County Treasurer Robert O. McNeil says he wants to meet with the village Board of Trustees to discuss the purchase of the former Slavin and Shulkin Furniture and Jewelry buildings. Back in March of 2009, the village committed to purchasing the group of buildings for $50,000 once the county foreclosed on the parcels for back taxes. The group of buildings was condemned back in 2003 due to safety concerns.

But now officials are considering backing out of the deal. According to local news sources, these concerns stem from “lower sales tax revenues, big increases in projected pension costs and the threat of substantial reductions in state aid.”

In addition, asbestos contamination and an underground oil tank are also problems at the site.

Asbestos exposure is conclusively linked to the development of mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer. The disease typically lies dormant for up to fifty years before an individual begins to suffer from mesothelioma symptoms, and the majority of patients lose their battle with this cancer in less than two years following diagnosis.

According to Village Administrator Everett E. Basford, “I’m confident the village is well-positioned to be able to afford the $50,000 purchase in this fiscal period.”

McNeil added: “I think, rather than pour kerosene on a sensitive issue, it might be worth coming to a meeting to discuss it. We’ve worked with Massena very successfully on blighted parcels in the past. The time has come to do something with the building. My concern here is basically if we take title to the property and the village doesn’t take it, we’d be taking title to a condemned property. How do you market a condemned building?”

Last week, Environmental Protection Agency officials, Land O’Lakes, Inc., Envirocon and The Benham Co.’s representatives met at City Hall to address questions and concerns. The cleanup project is expected to cost just under $10 million, and will remove dangerous materials which include heavy metals, chemicals, and asbestos, a known carcinogen, according to EPA Remedial Project Manager Laura Stankosky.

Asbestos exposure is conclusively linked to the development of mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer. Mesothelioma affects less than 3,000 Americans each year, as well as many thousands more around the globe. While there are palliative treatment methods available, including chemo, there is no known cure.

The disease typically lies dormant for up to fifty years before an individual begins to suffer from mesothelioma symptoms, which can cause severe shortness of breath and persistent coughing, as well as an accumulation of fluid in the lungs. Tragically, the majority of patients lose their battle with this cancer in less than two years after the onset of symptoms.

Envirocon has tackled thousands of cleanup projects over the past twenty years, and plans to have crews start working full time at the Hudson Refinery site after the holidays, according to Project Manager Eldon Penn. “In January and February, some scrap metal and a small amount of asbestos will be removed,” he said. “In March, the public will start seeing trucks coming in and out of the facility.”
