Far too many of these myths are based on fear–they’re either do-or-die instructions or sometimes frightening cautions on how to submit online articles that usually don’t reflect Google’s guidelines for producing a quality site.

In the main trying to abide by these common myths seriously hampers your ability to provide the high end content that you really want to give to your readers.

So, let’s kick off with what is the most basic myth–that somehow, there is something underhand about article marketing and that Google may punish you if you do it.

That is completely false.

Article marketing is an honest and respected way to drive traffic to a website, and Google has absolutely no problem with it. You are certainly not trying to fool Google or undertake anything that breaks the rules. When you submit articles, you simply create worthwhile content that readers want to read and publishers want to publish.

A positive consequence of article marketing is that your website is publicized, through the resource box at the end of the article. This resource box includes a link to your site, and each and every occasion your article is republished, you get another link.

The content produced by you in article marketing is known as “syndicated content”. This means that it could be reproduced on many different websites.

Syndicated content is a vital component in how the Internet works, and search engines do not have a problem with it.

What Google Wants

Google is not out to get anybody–it has an objective to accomplish, and its guidelines revolve around achieving that goal.

That goal is to provide their clients (the people who are searching for information on the Internet) with the best search results deliverable.

Simply put, when someone types a query into Google, they want to create a set of results that are ranked in order with the site with the highest likelihood of satisfying the searcher ranked top.

In order to accomplish this objective, Google needs to evaluate the web content so that it can rank web pages accurately.

What Is The Website Owners Role?

The role of the website owner is to market their website. In the same way as the owner of a brick and mortar business would take part in various marketing and networking activities to publicize his company, so a website owner needs to use specific Internet marketing tools such as article marketing to bring attention to their website.

In marketing your website, you should do keyword research and appropriately use these keywords in your website’s content and in any article submissions.

It’s also crucially important that your site actually contains top quality content. Of course, you want to be promoting your website, but your primary consideration should be a website that is worthy of being visited.

Forgetting the content on your own site whilst marketing it is like promoting a grand opening for an empty supermarket.

You have to have excellent content on your own website or marketing it simply makes no sense.

When you engage in article marketing correctly, your most important job is to write valuable and engaging content that publishers are needing and that readers enjoy. You will be promoting your site in a perfectly reasonable way, and your efforts will start to be reflected in Google’s listings.

How can you get the most mileage, and backlinks out of your text content for marketing? This is the process that I put all my articles through in order to get the most bang for my buck. Good original articles take time and effort – best to get all you can out of it for your marketing and backlinks.

This system provides a way to get two types of backlinks out of your articles: The standard author box links, and, more important, quality keyword focused anchor text backlinks.

One quick word on text copy spinning. While I do have a fantastic tool for spinning entire articles, I only spin my title, my subtitles, and my keywords in the text itself. I also occasionally spin the links in my author box – but that’s it.

I do not think that this is a big penalty with Google, nor do I think people actually read spun-out articles that sound like a computer wrote them. If Google does look down on putting out actual readable content, I have not noticed – nor do I care.

Writing for people, not Google spiders, will win the race in the long-haul.

1. Post the Article to Your Own Website

The first place I publish my new article, preferably consisting of between 550 and 750 words, is to my own blog. I allow 48 hours to go by in order to make sure the article gets indexed on my site first. I don’t want some 2.0 site getting original credit for my hard work. Then I Tweet, FaceBook, and MySpace about the new article on my site. I could use many more bookmarking and 2.0 sites as well, these are just the ones that I use the most.

2. Submit the Post to Ezine

The first place that I begin the article distribution process, is to submit the article to Ezine Articles. Ezine is the leading online article directory, and if it passes their standards, I know I’m good to go on continuing to distribute my article to other places. It can take several days for an article to get approved, but it’s worth it to be patient.

3. Make a Squidoo Lens

Once the article has been approved and published on Ezine, I then use it in creating a Squidoo lens with an anchor text link back to my main site.

4. ClipMark the Writing on Satellite Sites

For some markets it’s a good idea to set up one or two free blogs, like WordPress and LiveJournal. I don’t post the entire article, but rather use ClipMarks for easy publication. The ClipMark links point back to my money site automatically, and I then manually put in additional links back to Squiddo or Ezine in the intro box. This gives them some link juice as well.

5. Submit the Article to Free Traffic System

The cool thing about submitting articles to Free Traffic System is that they allow two quality anchor text links per article, per publication. This can be as many as 30 publications, making as many as 60 inbound anchor text links for each article that you submit! They have a fantastic free as well as paid program that you should check out for sure.

6. Run the Articles Through Magic Article Submitter

The last step I perform in my article marketing system is a huge blast. Magic Article Submitter is a fantastic tool that sends out the article to hundreds of article directories across the web. Many of these directories have site weights of two or greater. There are free submitting tools available, but I have found that they do not work anywhere near as well as the tools that you have to purchase.

This process can take up to a week to complete, but it only takes a few minutes each day. When I am finished, I have hundreds of backlinks giving me not only better page rank, but live traffic that is not from search engines. That’s an extra bonus!

Once this is complete, I start the entire process over again with a new text copy. Over time this system has started building quite a bit of traffic just through the backlinks from article directories and other blogs.

One other thing to keep in mind – don’t simply link to the home page. Mix your links up a bit by linking to your sub-pages, like archive pages, as well as to individual posts. Mix it up!

UPDATE:

Just wanted to point out an email that I received from an article directory today. My point about NOT spinning article should be taken seriously. I had a feeling that if I did not spin my articles, and sent them out as readable copy, it would pay off. This is the second email I have received about my articles:

“Dear Chaz, I just wanted to personally compliment you on the quality and structure of the articles we have received from you. They are all excellent and I wish all our authors submitted articles like this.

All the articles you have submitted to us to date have now been approved. In fact several of them will be syndicated on our various Twitter accounts in August which will provide you even more exposure. We are the fastest growing Article Directory on the Internet and are committed to 100% quality. We look forward to receiving more articles from you soon.

If you drop us a quick note at support@articlestorehouse.com whenever you submit we will be happy to put your approvals at the top of the ”to be approved” list as a thanks for submitting quality articles. Regards, Brad”

Happily, there is a solution. Asking oneself the question that follow can be a fast track out of writer’s block and may have you writing better than before you got it.

Why am I Working on This Particular Piece?

You may have started the piece because you found it absolutely inspirational. Maybe you thought it was something that had to be said to your readers. Is it still inspirational? Does it still feel like something that needs to be said? Sometimes, what started off as a good idea turns out to be not so good in the end. It is imperative that you learn to recognize that you have been working on a bad idea and move on to the next one.

Have I Lost My Way?

Sometimes writer’s block is your brain’s way of telling you that you are getting off track or that something just isn’t right. Remember why you started writing and get back to basics.

Am I Writing About Things I Love to Write About?

If not, maybe you should. Some professional writers, such as journalist, do not have the luxury of always writing about what they love. That’s ok. Take a break from the assignment and switch gears to something you actually want to write about. The assignment can wait until later.

Exactly How Long Have I Been in This Room?

Maybe you should migrate to another environment. Sitting in your office 60 hours a week isn’t good for anybody. Pack up the laptop, or take a pen and paper, and go to the park or a coffee shop.

Am I a Willing Writer?

Many writers have the opposite problem of not making it to the office at all. This is another form of writer’s block and can be the most dangerous because it allows the author to get into a pattern of laziness. You have to remember that, as a professional, this is your job. Whether you feel like writing or not is not the point. This is how you are paying rent. Sit down and do it.

Am I Comfortable?

Writers are notorious slobs. If this describes you, sooner or later, you are going to have to do something about your writing space. Cleaning it may do the trick. Perhaps moving the desk or the window, or just away from the door will help. A good time to deal with your workspace is when you can’t write. This will not only help improve your writing environment, it also gives your mind a break. That may be all you need.

Seize the Opportunity

Writer’s block does not have to be a paralyzing event. It can be viewed as an opportunity for change. It is a good time to take a step back and better yourself one way or another. Hopefully, these questions will help you do that.

There. I did my politically correct precursor just in case you are easily offended by truthful journalism. That being said let us proceed.

As the Publisher of a major article directory I see article submissions on a daily basis, so I am well qualified to be able to point out and comment on the “ugly side” of article writing.

The Ugly Side

This ugly side includes, but is not limited to, such notorious and heinous practices as:

• Article spinning, which is an entire topic of its own and will be addressed in subsequent articles.

• Poor grammar and spelling.

• Incorrect formatting

• And this topic; lazy article writing practices.

Lazy Article Writing Practice #1 – Shortcut Word Drugs

The lazy article writer usually starts off naively with the less addictive shortcut “word drugs” like it’s, isn’t, I’m and so on.

But as the ease and convenience of taking shortcuts becomes evident to those less inclined to put professionalism before “slangism” it can rapidly elevate to a more serious word drug dependency and they soon find themselves resorting to the use of such hardcore word drugs like:

it’ll
you’d
that’s
you’ll
couldn’t
wouldn’t
shouldn’t
hasn’t
they’d
you’re
what’s
they’ve
they’re
they’ll

An Example

Here is an example of an actual paragraph woefully articulated by a hard core word drug junkie:

“There is, however, a downside to this. Debts accrue interest over time, so the faster you repay a loan, the less interest you’ll pay – and the slower you repay it, the more interest you’ll pay.”

Poor soul. While the article itself was a decent article the entire article was so full of word drug use that the reader could get “high” just reading it. Does it not sound so much more professional to rewrite the above paragraph like this:

“There is, however, a downside to this. Debts accrue interest over time, so the faster you repay a loan, the less interest you will pay – and the slower you repay it, the more interest you will pay.”

Ah…so much better read and readable and it only took seconds to change the guttural sounding “you’ll” to the smoother, more refined sound of “you will” don’t you agree?

As an article writer do you take short cuts that basically amount to nothing more than slang rather than take the time to compose your articles like a professional?

Benefits of Professional Article Writing

One of the primary purposes and functions of an article directory is to offer quality content to those seeking it for use in their blogs or websites. Of course there are legions of article directories that do not edit or even manage their article submissions and as a result offer nothing more than what amounts to pure “cyber junk” to content seekers that is quickly rejected and the content seeker sent fleeing for greener content pastures.

Quality article directories on the other hand not only edit and professionally manage their content but only approve and align themselves with quality, professional authors who can provide the high quality content that content seekers actively search for and which unfortunately is becoming harder to find.

By writing quality, professional articles free of lazy writer shortcuts, spelling errors, grammatical indiscretions and poorly researched topics, to name just a handful of unprofessional article practices, you, as a quality writer, will ensure, no almost guarantee, that your content will be picked up and syndicated across the Internet. And after all, isn’t that why you write articles in the first place? To have hundreds or thousands of quality content seekers distributing your hard work and thus all the lucrative information in your resource box leading to your own blog, website or business, to as many sources as possible? I think so.

So, endeavor to write the most professional articles you possibly can, not only for your own pride of great writing, but to make sure your content is picked up and used by as many individuals or organizations as possible.

Be sure to refer to the word drug list above often so you will not be guilty of using lazy shortcuts then stay tuned to more articles on avoiding lazy article writer sins and helping yourself become the true professional writer you know you can be. Notice that aside from the samples I use in this article that I did not use a single shortcut word drug?

They mentioned some elements that I was not surprised by:

Outstanding content has a great title and offers information that is practical and teaches something.

Yes, that was expected, but there was one idea that kept resurfacing that I did not anticipate:

Outstanding content contains bullet points or some other type of number list element.

Some people surveyed even said that they would not read the article if it did not contain a bulleted list.

Some pretty strong feelings in favor of bulleted lists, eh?

It’s adequate inspiration to use bullet points in more articles!

Why do readers like to see an online article with bulleted lists?

Online readers are in a rush.

Online readers have many distractions competing for their attention.

Online readers are reading off of a computer monitor, which makes it harder on the eyes.

Online content presents unique challenges that print content does not. When you are writing articles for the web, you must write in a way that caters to the situation of your readers.

Bullet Point Guidelines

You can use bullet points to:

Bring attention to important information in your article

Highlight items in a list

Here are some tips for appropriately incorporating bullet points in your articles:

- -Bullet points should highlight a brief piece of information, rather than a long passage.

- -Bullet points should be on the same topic.

- -Items in your bulleted list can either be complete sentences or sentence fragments. If the items in your list are fragments, try to start the phrase with the verb (as in the second bulleted list in this article).

Using Punctuation In A Bulleted List

If your list consists of items that are complete sentences (such as in the second bulleted list in this article), you would end each item with a period or other appropriate ending punctuation.

List items that are just phrases should not receive punctuation at the end (as in the first bulleted list in this article).

Do not end your list items with a semicolon or comma.

Try to keep all of your bullet items of the same type–either all complete sentences or all sentence fragments.

Ways To Indicate Bullets In An Online Article Submission:

When you are submitting articles online, most publishers will require the article be in text format. Below are some acceptable ways of indicating bullets in text format:

Probably the most popular is the asterisk *.

You can also use a double hyphen - - .

An arrow can also indicate a list item. You can create an arrow by pressing the equals key and then the “greater than” key on your keyboard =>.

Sometimes people use other common keyboard keys, such as the # and the >> .

Your Homework:

One very easy way to improve your online article submissions is to format them so that they are easier to read. Bullet points are particularly effective at this.

This week, use the guidelines in this article to incorporate bullet points in your next article.

These tips work for writing articles, writing posts and for writing short reports. I have used them for the past 27 years as a copywriter, content marketer and author of dozens of articles for magazines, websites, newspapers, and chapters of books. They even worked for me when I was ghostwriter for a professional golfer who wrote a book for beginning golfers.

Set aside enough time to write at least two articles on the same topic. It takes times and energy to write articles, more than most people plan for if they are just getting started. When you plan to write at least two articles in one sitting you are saving time because you are researching the topic only once.

You can then organize the material you have researched in two ways. The first article could be a general description of the problem explaining its importance to a particular group of people.

For instance, I decided to write about the dilemma of finding a first time overnight summer camp for a ten year old girl. In the first article I described why I think it is important that she spend a couple of weeks away from home, and why I think she is ready for that experience. In the second article I am more specific, listing my criteria for a good fit for the girl and then listing the resources I use to locate such a camp.

Find a time to write without interruption that works best for you. I prefer writing first thing in the morning, before the rest of the household is awake. I usually do my research the day before so that everything is in front of me when It is time to organize and write about problems and solutions. Other people prefer writing in the evening or during the day. The perfect time is up to you.

Understand that your writing will not be perfect no matter how many times you check if for typos and language. It happens to the best and the brightest. That does not mean you submit the article to a directory or put it on your website without checking it for errors. It does mean, however, that is not the end of the world if you missed something.
So many people are learning about becoming, or have already become, part of the Internet marketing world. They are being told to outsource – and this is great news for freelance writers.

Nowhere is this more important than with SEO content writing: blog writing, article writing, social media posts and e-book writing.

You see, writing is not everyone’s specialty, and even if it is, many Internet marketers find it a time-consuming part of their campaigns. While they understand that SEO content writing is vital for traffic and link generation, they often prefer more stimulating stuff – product creation, filming videos, recording interviews and the like.

For them therefore, getting someone else to do their article writing – and all other types of writing – makes good business sense. As with any other industry Internet marketers are more productive when they are doing things they enjoy.

The Work Is There – Go Get It!

If, like me, writing is your thing, then this industry is providing a ‘business on a platter’ for you. There is so much work available for writers who have learned how to create SEO (search engine optimized) content – and it’s not difficult. And the beauty of it is, just about anyone can do it – from old folks, stay at home moms and teenagers – especially if you know a particular topic well.

Internet marketers are not looking for journalists for this work – for one thing, they won’t pay journalist rates. And they are not looking for award-winning material. They are looking for good grammar and spelling, and most importantly correct keyword placement.

Knowing how to assemble a good article is perhaps the first step, as article marketing is one of the most often used techniques for getting links and traffic. Articles can be posted to publication sites as well as on the marketers blog or website – great, original content.

How Much Will You Earn?

There is no easy answer to this. When you start out, you must expect to work for less than ideal rates per job, especially if you are using one of the many freelancing sites to find jobs. Here you need to develop a ‘reputation’ and rating from previous clients in order to build credibility with prospective clients.

If you do your job properly, you will likely be offered more work. As you build a relationship with the client and demonstrate your reliability and quality of work, you are in a position to ask for more per job. Do the right thing by your client, and they will reward you with loyalty.

I look after my clients, and never deliver substandard work. And I recruit writers as well, some I have had for several years, others never get invited back.

Bottom line? Research what is out there, get good basic training, and give it a go. Don’t expect to make millions initially, but work on building a strong, high quality client base, and like me, you will have the beginning of a great, rewarding, home-business.

I recently surveyed a community of folks interested in article marketing about the elements of outstanding content, and I was astonished at how big a role the formatting of an article played in attracting readers.

Why is Formatting so Important?

The main issue is readability. Internet readers have unique challenges.

They are reading your article from a computer screen, which can be hard on the eyes.

They are also skimming content to see if your article has information that would be valuable for them. Remember, online readers have a sea of content in front of them, so they need to quickly scan the article before determining that it is something they want to really read.

Online readers are easily distracted–they may have several web pages open at one time and a list of content before them that could possibly address their question. It’s very easy to skip around when you are reading on the Internet.

Online readers are also looking for the easiest method of attaining the information that they need. They are not necessarily interested in reading a lengthy treatise on their subject of interest. They would prefer to quickly glance at an article and glean the information they need in a flash.

How Can You Make Your Articles Easy For Online Readers to Read?

Keep These Formatting Elements In Mind:

Use bullet points.

Include sub-headings.

Incorporate numbered list items.

Keep your paragraphs short.

Adopt An “Easy To Read” Writing Style:

Get straight to the point in your introductory paragraph. Readers will be skimming your article before deciding to read in depth, and they will start with your introductory paragraph. Your first paragraph should clearly explain what your article is about.

Edit ruthlessly. Your goal is to say what you want to say using as few words as possible.

Explain things in a simple manner and avoid niche jargon. Your language should be such that a beginner in your field can understand what you are saying.

Proofread your article for grammar and spelling. Correct grammar not only makes your article look more professional, but it also makes your article easier to read.

Avoid long and involved sentences. Shorter sentences help the reader to follow your argument more easily.

We would all like to think that readers are hanging on every word of our article and devoting ample time to digesting the content and ideas, but for most online readers that is simply not the case.

Readers love articles that are easy to understand and easy to glean information from. Numbered lists and bullet points are elements that readers look for in an outstanding article. Of course the quality of content has to be there too, but the information you provide needs to be presented in such a way that it appeals to online readers.

There is lots of information and advice on the Internet about article marketing. That’s great for those who are learning who need the advice – and for those of us who never stop learning! However for all of the good advice floating around it’s also good to discover the things that you ought not to do and what you should steer clear of.

The idea behind this article is to assist you to get the best out of your article marketing campaigns by showing you 5 things that you need to avoid, why you should avoid them and what you should do as an alternative if you want to make the most out of your article marketing campaigns.

O.K. then, here are the 5 things that you should avoid:

1. Ignoring Article Directory Guidelines

The reason why you ought not do this is because guidelines vary from directory to directory and if you ignore them you are less likely to get your articles accepted. Instead, you ought to check the guidelines of each directory that you submit to, or if you can’t be bothered decide upon a minimum standard and stick to it.

For instance many directories have a minimum word count, the average seems to be about 400 so write 500 to give yourself a safety gap. Although some directories allow more than one link in the article body and author bio, some only allow one in the bio, so if you haven’t checked guidelines and particularly when you are mass submitting it might be better to stick to one link.

2. Broken Links

It’s perfectly obvious that the reason you are submitting articles is to drive traffic to your website whether it be through clicks from the links in your author bio or building up authority with backlinks from the directories and the publisher’s websites. It’s quite surprising just how many article marketers do not format their links properly or even forget to add any when the sole purpose of submission is the links!. Instead, you could get better results by just taking a little more time and checking to see if your links work before submission.

3. Writing Fake Product Reviews

That is a matter of ethics and conscience, but when I am interested in buying something and want to know more about it I find the fake reviews from people selling the products easy to spot and blooming annoying when I have to click on link after link to find genuine reviews. Instead you should check the products out first before writing about them, and if it’s an electrical or mechanical product you should use them for several months before voicing an experienced opinion that is worth listening to.

4. Avoid Writing Articles In Word

Unless you turn ‘smart quotes’ off in word when you submit to the article directories some of the punctuation turns into what looks like web dings. This ruins the look of your articles and will put publishers off reusing them on their sites or ezines. I’ve also found that smart quotes can block the RSS feeds going out from directories which can affect the performance of the directory and every one else’s articles. So you should turn the smart quotes off in Microsoft Word, or write your articles in notebook or even straight into your blog as I do.

5. Submitting Articles Without Checking Them For Errors First

In the short-run it can be tempting to do this when you are tired and want to leave your computer, but in the long-run it’s always best to check for errors. Even if that means delaying submission until you have more time. Remember that we all make mistakes, none of us are perfect and even when you think that you have scoured an article there can still be a teeny weeny mistake that can get your article declined, costing you and the article checker valuable time.

If you carefully avoid these 5 very common errors and act upon the suggestions offered for alternatives instead, your chances of article marketing success are going to be much better than they otherwise would.

Most authors are wasting their time producing dozens to hundreds of high quality articles that never reach a fraction of their traffic potential. It’s a darn shame.

When I review the behind-the-scenes traffic statistics on over 20,000 articles that have produced over 1 million monthly page views in my article marketing lab…ONE thing is clear: All articles are not created equal even when everything about them is identical except for the TITLE.

The Reason is Probably Not What You Think.

If you’ve been schooled on traditional copywriting, you know that in the offline world, the headline determines as much as 95% of the success of the book or article. This statistic takes into consideration what makes the book title successful: Whether a human buys it or not.

Article Marketing on the Internet is a whole different story because of the way your articles reach humans who have an interest in them.

MYTH: Most people will read your articles because they came to a website and started browsing just like they do if they were to have gone to a local book store to find a book of personal interest.

FACT: Wrong! Most people will search the Internet using one of the major search engines and they will be putting in between 1 to 5 keywords that are related to the topic of the article or information they are looking to locate. The search engines will then deliver results that best match the human’s interest.

YOUR GOAL: To have your articles show up in the search engine results for the keywords and topics that are most related to the content of your article.

HOW?

You Must Embrace This TITLE Creation & Traffic-Building Truth:

The first 3-5 words of your TITLE determine the success of your article in terms of how much traffic your article will generate back to your website. Success can only be had when you create keyword rich titles for your articles that match the most commonly searched keywords for your topic.

How to Determine Which Keywords are Rich and the Right Ones to Use for Your Article?

You’ll need a keyword research tool. Some are free and some are fee-based. Overture.com has a popular keyword research tool that shows you the most common search results from the Yahoo search engines directory. If you want to see what’s on “Google’s Mind” you can try their free keyword search tool:

https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

A “Good” vs. “Bad” TITLE Example:

Here is an example of the difference between a non-keyword rich TITLE vs. a very keyword rich TITLE that is proven to perform better in terms of traffic creation:

Bad TITLE Example:

“Top 9 Ways You Can Acquire Fractional Jet Ownership”

Excellent Keyword Rich Title Example:

Fractional Jet Ownership – 9 Strategies to Help You Acquire Your Private Jet

Why is it More Effective?

Because it does not waste the first 3 words of the title with meaningless garbage words like “top” or the number “9″ or “ways”…and gets right to the important words that might be found when someone is using a search engine to research a topic related to your article.

You’ll also notice in my example that I included the word “Private” Jet. Why? Because my keyword research said that people who search for fractional jet also search for the word “private jet” and therefore I wanted to boost the chances that my title would be found by a larger number of potential visitors to the article.

Two Recommendations on What NOT to Do:

1) Don’t include garbage characters in your TITLE such as quotes, tildes, asterisks or anything else that a search engines has to work hard to discard in order to understand the TITLE of your article.

2) Do not engage in any search engine spam technique by having keyword rich TITLES that have nothing to do with the topic of your article. You’ll only be hurting yourself as the search engines already aggressively filter out bad behavior like this.

YOUR INTELLIGENT KEYWORD RICH TITLE COPYWRITING CONCLUSION:

If you want to maximize your results from any article marketing strategy, you must master keyword research so that you can create keyword rich and intelligent article TITLES. Your pay off will be massive amounts of traffic to your articles and website thanks to the search engines who love smart keyword rich TITLES!
