That’s the reason, meditation become more popular and important nowaday.

Meditation is practised in our daily living to help us transporting ourselve to a place of inner peace so that we can totally rest our mind, our body and feed our spirit. Breathing is at the very core of meditation, by using proper essential oils, it act as natural sedatives and helps create peaceful atmosphere and enhance the relaxed state of meditation.

Meditation is not exclusive to any one particular culture or religious/spiritual group. Generally speaking, meditation induces a sense of relaxation leading one to become receptive to enlightenment.

Whereas prayer is the state of speaking to God or the Divine, either out loud or silently, meditation is the state of silently and calmly listening to hear insight, enlightenment and empowerment from our Divine creator. Meditation allows us to relax our minds, focus upon a particular point of reference and take a mini-vacation from the stresses of the day.

Below are the types of essential oils which suitable for meditation:

Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin) is very grounding. It is considered the oil of peace. With its earthy aroma and sedative properties, it can help quiet the mind during meditation. Patchouli’s primal scent is arousing and helps to dispel anxiety about sex; it is often used as an aphrodisiac. It is also calming and can help rebalance the body when stress has caused nervous exhaustion. It has antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and antiseptic properties that make it good for use in skin care. Patchouli can be used as an inhalant with a diffusor or on the skin with a carrier.

Cedarwood (Cedrus atlantica), with its sweet, woody-balsamic, slightly camphorous scent, helps focus the mind and relieve anxiety, nervous tension, and stress. It is uplifting, strengthening, comforting, and grounding, and it helps to create balance. With every breath, cedarwood’s antiseptic properties protect the lungs against respiratory infections. It is a mucolytic (breaks down mucus), which makes it an excellent treatment for catarrhal conditions, especially chronic bronchitis.

The steam-distilled roots of vetiver (Vetiveria zizanioides) are restorative and help reconnect us to our roots. The aroma encourages a sense of inner strength and protection and is therefore grounding and nourishing. The musty-earth scent of vetiver is generally used as a base note when blending essential oils. It blends well with oils such as clary sage, jasmine, lavender, patchouli, and rose. Vetiver is antiseptic, antispasmodic, a sedative for the nervous system, a stimulant for the circulatory system, and a tonic that can be used for conditions such as arthritis, muscular aches and pains, rheumatism, sprains, stiffness, depression, insomnia, tension, and stress. It can also be used for skin conditions such as acne, cuts, oily skin, and wounds. Vetiver can be used as an inhalant, with a diffusor, or on the skin when mixed with a carrier oil.

Indian spikenard (Nardostachys jatamansi) has an aroma that is warm, earthy, peaty, bittersweet, and woody. It is native to the Himalayan mountains and is also known as “nard.” It is one of the most ancient of aromatics, considered precious to the early Egyptian, Hebrew, and Hindu civilizations for both ritual and medicinal purposes. Mary Magdalene is said to have anointed the feet of Jesus with this oil before the Last Supper. In 1652 herbalist Nicholas Culpeper wrote that spikenard “comforts the brain” and helps “passions and swooning of the heart.” Spikenard is in the same plant family as valerian and shares the intense, pungent scent of its sister root.

Sandalwood (Santalum album) essential oil is quickly becoming rare; it will be increasingly harder to find the real thing because of years of unsustainable over-harvesting practices. If you already have some of this sweet woody oil, keep it for sacred use such as meditation. It is a relaxing and meditative oil with sensual properties, soothing and comforting to body and mind. Sandalwood encourages feelings of well-being and has been used traditionally as an incense and perfume.

Frankincense resin (Boswellia carterii) aids in meditation, fortifying and quieting the mind. It is an excellent oil to use for respiratory conditions. Frankincense lifts the spirits, encourages feelings of well-being, produces heightened awareness of spiritual calm, reduces tension, and gives strength .

Below diffuser blends can be a good starting ideas for creating your own personal meditation blends. Be sure that you understand the safety precautions of essential oils and how to properly use your diffuser.

Peppermint is native to Europe and Asia, is naturalized to North America, and grows wild in moist, temperate areas. Some varieties are indigenous to South Africa, South America, and Australia.

Peppermint is a very popular ingredient for gum, toothpaste, tea and for cooking too. Peppermint is also very effective to soothe an upset stomach and to aid in digestion. Because it has a calming and numbing effect, it has been used to treat headaches, skin irritations, anxiety associated with depression, nausea, diarrhea, menstrual cramps, and flatulence. It is also an ingredient in chest rubs, used to treat symptoms of the common cold. In test tubes, peppermint kills some types of bacteria and viruses, suggesting it may have antibacterial and antiviral properties.

While carriers are often thought of in terms of their reflexology and massage uses, these oils actually posses their own virtues. Instead of thinking of them as merely the method of applying essential oils, we can explore the unique qualities of carrier oils separately with great results. Most likely, your aromatherapy techniques will be enhanced by using your special essential oils with carriers that actually increase their medicinal qualities.

Also, need to remind you here that most of the pure essential oils are not safe if apply directly to skin undiluted, because essential oils are highly concentrate oils. Whenever, you plan to use essential oils, always refer to the safety precaution of aromatherapy essential oils.

To begin with, it is important to remember that fats are essential for human life. Fats, called lipids, are critical for maintaining warmth, providing protection and ensuring healthy cellular function. Although the world of nutrition is engaged in discovering which fats are best for internal health, aromatherapy is concerned with how plant-derived oils deliver health from the outside in. Externally-applied oils help the body maintain vital functions in unique ways through both chemical changes and mechanical assistance.

Carrier oils are primarily derived from nuts and seeds. They are extracted via cold-pressed technology, meaning high heat is not used. Once oils reach temperatures exceeding 160 degrees Celsius, their structure is altered, making them trans-fats, a kind of mutated fat that the body cannot assimilate properly. Expeller-pressing is another common extraction method. By placing seeds or nuts in an expeller, the precious oil is pressed out and then bottled. Superior carrier oils are mechanically pressed oils and have not been subjected to chemical changes.

Many carrier oils can be used in multiple applications, and consumers often choose oils based on the thickness or scent they prefer. Individual carrier oils do have some specific qualities though that can be used to your benefit. The main carrier oils can be divided into three general groups, reflecting their common aromatherapy applications. Sweet almond, sunflower, hempseed and fractionated coconut are excellent choices for massage and reflexology. A mixture of 10-15% essential oil and 85-90% carrier oil will ensure a powerful oil that is smooth and great-smelling. Facial skin care is another aspect of aromatherapy where carrier oils shine, bringing health to sun or acne damaged skin. Apricot kernel, rosehip, and hazelnut oils are deeply nourishing in these applications, and rosehip can even be used to treat scars Dry skin and other bodily skin disorders, such as eczema, can be helped with tamanu, avocado, evening primrose, jojoba, sesame, grapeseed and shea. When choosing your own carriers, experiment with a few and see how your skin responds. Once you find one you love (and there’s definitely a carrier oil for everyone) you can begin mixing the carrier with your favorite essential oils.

Mixing carrier oils with volatile oils allows the essential oil to be used more efficiently. Volatile oils have a short lifespan once they hit the air. In about an hour, these oils are no longer active. A carrier oil, with its viscous body, keeps the essential oil vibrant, allowing the essential oils to exhibit their healing qualities longer. A way to remember this is to consider what happens when you put a drop of ylang ylang on your skin. Within an hour the scent is decreased. If you mix the ylang ylang with a carrier, however, the scent, and the oil’s medicinal qualities will last much longer. Aromatherapists have found that essential oils are most effective when they are applied on a regular basis, and carrier oils allow us to do so. Because some essential oils may cause sensitization of the skin, carriers also protect the skin from this potential pitfall - remember this: you will NOT be reducing the efficacy of your essential oils by diluting them properly in carriers, you will absolutely be enhancing the ability of your body’s ability of making use of these precious gifts of nature!

They are the “essence” of the particular plant that giving the plants its unique scent.

There are three principal methods of extracting essential oils from aromatic plants. These are: distillation process; expression process; extraction using volatile solvents; and enfleurage process.

Distillation Process
Distillation process or steam distillation is the most common process method for obtaining essential oils from a plant. The process involve heating and the steam is force into a vat of plant material, where it breaks open and reptures these glands releasing the precious oils, vapor is formed, then cooling the vapor until it becomes liquid. This is when the essential oils are collected.

Distillation is an economical and popular method used in essential oils extraction. However , it still may take hundreds, or even thousands pound of plant parts to distill a single pound of the essential oils. That’s why, some essential oils will vary greatly in their cost.

Expression Process
Expression process also know as cold-press process, this method is only used for citrus fruit. The essential oils in citrus fruits are situated close to the surface of the peel and are easily obtained by squeezing and scarification (finely puncturing the peel). Expression methods include the sponge method and machine abrasion, the former being more traditional and producing a very pure essential oil.

You can experiment at home with hand expression and produce small quantities of your own citrus essential oils. Wash and dry the fruit and cut off segments of peel. Using your fingers, squeeze the peel over a small bowl to collect the drops of essential oil. If you squeeze a lemon or orange rind into a candle flame, you can see tiny fireworks. This is because essential oils are flammable, you can see firsthand that they are present.

Solvent extraction

Another method employed is called solvent extraction. Technically, this process does not produce an essential oil. Rather the outcome is a highly scented concentrate used primarily in the perfume and food industries. Solvent is used to “pull out” the soluble plant molecules; therefore they are not complete. For those plant containing only a small amount of essential oil, solvent extraction processes are used. The main advantage is that this method is gentle, but the resulting essential oils include non-volatile waxes and plant dyes, as well as the essential oil itself. Nonetheless, these essential oils are considered by many authorities to be fine for use in aromatherapy. The main solvents used in modern production are volatile hydrocarbons (such as hexane).

Enfleurage Process

An intensive and traditional way of extracting oil from flowers. The process involves layering fat over the flower petals. Over time and many layering, the fat has absorbed the essential oils. Once the fat is saturated with fragrance, it is then called the “enfleurage pomade”. The enfleurage pomade then soaked in alcohol to draw the fragrant molecules into the alcohol. The alcohol is used to separate and extract the oils from the fat. The alcohol is then allowed to evaporate, leaving behind the absolute pure essential oils. The spent fat is usually used to make soaps since it is still relatively fragrant.

Aromatherapy means “treatment using scents”. It is a type of alternative medicine using the stimulant of pleasant smell of volatile plant oils, including essential oils and other aromatic plant compounds. Aromatherapy aimed at improving a person’s health, physically and psychologically. Many consider this type of treatment as unscientific and unwise thinking, however, scientific evidence of its effectiveness is growing.

The most common ingredient used in Aromatherapy nowadays is the essential oils. Essential oils, the pure essences of a plant, they are aromatic essences extracted from plants, flowers, trees, fruits, bark, grasses and seeds with distinctive therapeutic, psychological, and physiological properties, which improve health and change moods. There are about 150 essential oils. Most of these oils have antiseptic properties; some are antiviral, anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving, antidepressant and expectorant. Other properties of the essential oils which are taken advantage of in aromatherapy are their stimulation, relaxation, digestion improvement, and diuretic properties. To get the maximum benefit from essential oils, it should be made from natural, pure raw materials. Synthetically made oils like perfume do not provide the therapeutic benefits of essential oils.

The essential oils are added to the bath or massaged into the skin, inhaled directly or diffused to scent an entire room. Aromatherapy is used for the relief of pain, care for the skin, alleviate tension and fatigue and invigorate the entire body. it helps to change our mood as well. Just imagine what is your mood when you smell the scent of fresh roses and what how you feel when you smell the garbage dump.

The Theory Behind Aromatherapy

Essential oils penetrate the body in two ways: through the nose and through skin.

Through The Nose (Olfactory and inhalation)

The olfactory, the nose-brain association is the most direct connection we have with environment. When breath in, the essential oils molecules will be absorbed and captured by the small hairs called cilia in the nose, they will bind them to receptors, message send direct to the limbic system. Limbic system is directly connected to those parts of the brain that control heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, stress level, hormone balance, and so it responsible for all primitive drive of hunger, thirst, sex etc.

Inhalation, when inhaling, the aromatic molecules enter through nose and absorbed into respiratory tract and into the lungs. They pass directly across the mucous membrance into blood stream and deliver to all parts of the body.

Through The Skin (Dermal crossing)

Skin is the largest organ of a human. When the essential oils applied onto the skin, via carrier oil or lotion. (essential oils are highly concentrate oils and should not applied direct to skin undiluted, read safety precaution of aromatherapy essential oils) The essential oils penetrates the skin through pores and hair follicles, where they are absorbed by tiny capillaries, they eventually reached the bloodstream (the microcirculatory system), circulated throughout the body and affect adjacent organs and structure until they are excreted through urine, feces, sweat, perspiration or exhalation. Unlike synthetic chemicals or drugs, essential oils do not accumulate in the body. This is one of the reason why aromatherapy essential oils is safe to be used.

The effectiveness of essential oils absorption can be enhanced by warming the skin including massage, the warmth encourages the blood circulation and this maximize the essential oils absorption.

“Oral Ingestion or swallow the essential oils is NOT recommanded to public as great essential oils knowledge and expertise is needed for safe practice.”

Other Benefits of Essential Oils
In addition to therapeutic benefit at the emotional and physical level, essential oils are helpful in other applications. Essential oils can be used in household and laundry cleaners. Some oils act as a natural insect repellent and pesticide. You may recall using citronella candles during the summer to keep mosquitoes away. Citronella essential oil is the ingredient in the candles that is responsible for repelling the mosquitos.

Aromatherapy is one of the fastest growing fields in alternative medicine. It is widely used at home, clinics and hospitals for a variety of applications such as pain relief for women in labor pain, relieving pain caused by the side effects of the chemotherapy undergone by the cancer patients, and rehabilitation of cardiac patients.

Aromatherapy is already slowly getting into the mainstream. In Japan, engineers are incorporating aroma systems into new buildings. In one such application, the scent of lavender and rosemary is pumped into the customer area to calm down the waiting customers, while the perfumes from lemon and eucalyptus are used in the bank teller counters to keep the staff alert.

There are many essential oils suitable for daily use in our daily living. Anyway, if you are new to essential oils and would like to getting started with Aromatherapy Essential Oils, I would love to suggest you these two basic essential oils that are very popular in aromatherapy that should ideally be present in almost every household - Lavender and Tea Tree. These oils have innumerable uses and can be used with any kind of dilution.

Lavender Essential Oils - This oil calms, soothes the skin, balances oil production, helps to heal blemishes, stimulates circulation to skin, reduces inflammation of acne and soothes nervous system.

Lavender has often been called the ‘medicine chest in a bottle’ for its broad range of applications. Every home should keep Lavender on hand, even if no other oil is used, as it is so very effective on burns. Its anti-inflammatory action is responsible for the beginnings of modern aromatherapy, as Dr. Jean Valnet discovered Lavender’s healing properties after being burned in a laboratory accident.

Lavender is considered to speed wound healing and reduce scarring. The oil is also pleasantly calming, and can be used to reduce stress in a variety of situations – a commonly used technique is to apply Lavender oil ‘neat’ (undiluted) to the soles of the feet of patients recovering from almost any ailment

Tea Tree Essential Oils - Has antibacterial, antifungal, antiseptic and antiviral properties. Irritating to highly sensitive skin.

When first examined for it’s antiseptic properties, Tea Tree essential oil was found to be 100 times more powerful than carbolic acid – the medical standard at the time. Tea tree has an extremely broad range of antibiotic, antiviral, and antifungal properties that have been confirmed by modern scientific research.

Often used topically on small wounds, Tea Tree is also commonly found in oral hygiene preparations, and can also be effectively employed for Candida, athlete’s foot, and acne, among other things.
