Edition 67 - Lucy Claire - "Here are a collection of my favourite pieces of music written for, inspired by or associated with dance and movement. For the last year I have been collaborating with choreographer Imogen Bland on a piece called Moon and Yew. It features immersive classical music, glitchy experimental electronics and soundscapes, beautiful yet dissonant with an unerringly sinister edge making way for a tale of isolation, ritual and struggle through dance. We are working towards a full performance in Summer 2015, but we have a teaser coming out very soon!

Throughout the writing process, I have been listening to ballet scores by old masters and beautiful new work from the likes of Peter Broderick. I have selected here a few pieces that I particularly love. Enjoy!

Daylight Music 16 (5th Birthday Concert)

Beginning, back in 2009, as a way of making live music available, free of charge, at an unusual hour, in a wonderfully atmospheric venue, Daylight Music’s Saturday afternoon concert series have grown to become one of London’s most beloved regular live music events. Massively over-subscribed by musicians of almost every imaginable stripe feverish to play before well-informed audiences at Highbury’s stunning Union Chapel, DM’s regular venue, the concerts habitually draw crowds in their hundreds, Now, after staging over 180 events they celebrate its fifth birthday in style on Friday 12^th September 2014. The festivities will pivot around a special birthday concert on, just for a change, the evening of September 12, featuring Frank Chickens, Chaps Choir, Gill Sandell, The Belles of London City, Samantha Whates and Oliver ‘Dollboy’ Cherer (along with a smattering of special surprise guests).

I was inspired by a recent concert by the Sun Ra Arkestra at the Barbican to revisit my love of Disney tunes. To hunt out some of the incredible covers by the 'greats' such as Dave Brubeck, Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong. I included some bit parts for Prince and Princess (tenuous I know!) alongside this a selection of new and old track which could loosely be called drone or ambient music. Enjoy some dark, magical and mysterious musical characters presented in I think an usual context.

Edition 64 - Adrian Crowley - "I have chosen some music that has followed me and kept me company on my travels around Europe these past two years. A lot of that time I spent alone and whenever I was able to relax and not worry about missing my connecting train or flight, I'd put on my headphones and watch the hi-speed view from my forward facing window seat. Sometimes I'd record a few clips of where I was for a moment in time...mostly train stations, I'll grant you ....and people talking and well, the sound of trains. You can hear some of those sounds here but you may have to listen closely.

Jackson C. Frank, Casiotone For The Painfully Alone, Blixa Bargeld and much of what you hear on this circle mix was with me around the time I was finishing my newest record, ever present in my kitchen at home and whenever I was travelling again. The penultimate song is by the wonderful artist Katie Kim who graced my new recordings with her unique voice.

Edition 63 - André de Ridder - "The starting point for this mix and choice of tracks was actually two things: seeing the piano featured so prominently in new trends of contemporary and neo-classical ambient music, courtesy of auteurs like Nils Frahm and Olafur Arnalds and exploring a connection to existing classics of modern piano music, here represented by such influential composers as Ligeti and Feldman. We loved making the transitions. the blurring lines evident (or disappearing) in the choice of music made audible maybe a little more and longer than is comfortable. So we went for it. Special thanks to Jan St. Werner who helped me put this together."

This dark, twisted and hypnotisingly slow film follows one man’s voyage to the oceanic planet Solaris and the emotional dangerous effect it induces in him. The films influence isn’t limited to the all-you-can eat visuals but goes into every area of film making, including the fantastic use of music. Worms and wormholes and everything else is all woven into this mp3 and listen out for some snippets from Carl Orff's 'Music For Children' embedded into the mix. Enjoy."

Arctic Circle's Easter Broadcast 2012

Spring has sprung, the grass has riz, do you wonder where the penguins is? Well, we know for a fact the penguins are all busy making their Easter bonnets to wear to the Arctic Circle Easter Broadcast.

On the 9th April 2012 at the wonderful Union Chapel Bar we gathered World of Fox, My Glass World, The Vatican Cellars and The Gentle Good. The show was actually recorded last year, but we mislaid it and only found it when we delved down the back of the Arctic Sofa looking for chocolate money, after being showed in for 3 days due to the totally seasonable weather.

World of Fox is Simon, ex-leader of Birmingham post-rockers Grover and often to be found strumming in his shed; My Glass World have just released their first album Book One on Luxury Noise; The Vatican Cellars are from London and Orange County and describe their songs as being about ‘death, loss and guilt’; and The Gentle Good, who is Cardiff based Gareth Bonello. Each band will play two tracks on the Easter theme. Low-rent urban crooner Irving Burnt-Toast, on the wrong side of the Fire Curtain, provides the interval’s sonic disturbance, accompanied by a mortified Gill Sandell.

With all the frolics and frivolity you’d expect from an Arctic Circle event, we hope you’ll all be donning your bonnets too and joining us for this chocolate flavoured, bunny sponsored gig with a difference!

Edition 57 - The Lowland Hundred - Circles Of Friends / Sphere Of Influence Mix - The mix is circular as per the brief but the thought I kept coming back to when putting it together is summed up by that photo. If a track is a stone and your mind is the still pool, when you hear a track, it makes a splash and its influence ripples out through you. Those ripples grow to encircle you but then you hear another track which creates its own ripples which intersect with the ripples made by the first track and so on. Commisioned to coincide with our Easter Broadcast we have commisioned a new mix from Dolly Dolly. He says

"Ahhhh, Spring! Baby Lambs! Easter eggs! Roast potatoes! All the greats!

Hello, Dolly Dolly here with just a few words about my diddy mix for the Arctic Circle Radio. It's Easter and spring is in full flow. So what better way to celebrate than with the joys of light music! Hooray! Yes - nether classical nor easy-listening, nether Library music nor um - er, something else? Light Music in my mind is a strangely English phenomenon (it may not be - I don't really know, I'm sure if you were so inclined you'd Google it), as English as Yorkshire pudding, pigeon fancying, red post boxes and knitted woollen cardigans. I'd like to think you could play this mix to your oldest surviving relative and they'd happily nod off in the armchair with a contented smile on their wrinkly faces. Of course I couldn't just leave it at that, I couldn't help myself and so apropos of nothing there's random samples of English people saying things that have little or no relevance to the music but somehow they seemed to work.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed putting it together. Happy Easter everyone."

Edition 51 - Electro-acoustic cafe Mix - Sound artist and barista James Brewster presents a mix based around his 'Electro-acoustic cafe' project - a combined espresso-bar and sound installation. He uses contact microphones on espresso machines and other coffee equipment and processes the sounds, so that his actions as a barista making coffee for the audience become a sound performance. His Circle mix is bookended by two live recordings of processed milk frothing, from performances in Malmo, Sweden a few months apart. Inbetween these two appearances Brewster took the project to various festivals around Europe, and the tracks in the mix are selections from the music he was listening to during these trips. Electro-acoustic cafe was recently featured on one of Swedish national TV's culture programmes, and has also made the front page of one of the country's main newspapers.

Vashti Bunyan is an English singer who was publicised to be the next Marianne Faithfull and the female version of Bob Dylan back in the mid-60s. Several singles were released in the 1960s to some mild success. Bunyan also released the LP, Just Another Diamond Day, in 1970 which consisted of songs written while travelling in a horse drawn gypsy cart. Critics panned the album and a discouraged Vashti soon disappeared from the music scene. This has all changed over recent years. Arctic Circle caught up with Vashti Bunyan last year to find out more about her life so far and you can also hear an exclusive triumphant show at the Union Chapel, in Islington (broadcast here for the first time).

For the 50^th Circle mix, and in anticipation of the release of The Miserable Rich’s ghostly album and Halloween tour, the band’s singer James de Malplaquet has sourced some of the best ghost-themed songs and spooky instrumentals, and asked strangers and friends alike to tell him about their own supernatural experiences.

Miss You In The Days, the band’s third album, was recorded in Britain’s most haunted stately home, the Jacobean Palace of Blickling Hall, built on the site of Ann Boleyn’s birthplace – and the Hall is one of the special spooky sites the tour will visit, including Westminster Reference Library, St Brides Church in Liverpool, St Philip with St Stephen Church in Manchester and many more.

Alabaster de Plume, who will be touring with the band, performing his own songs as well as introducing some spine-tingling tales to the evening, contributes two tales to the mix, inspired by two of the stories that The Miserable Rich wrote about on the album.

Edition 49 - Daniel W J Mackenzie Mix - This mix has been put together to demonstrate how the combining of musical sounds - pitched notes and such - can be strengthened and enhanced by their mechanical counterparts when placed alongside each other, or occupying their own separate passages of time. When a drone or melody is introduced into a track after a lengthy section of non-musical sound it can have increased power and a strange drama, used very effectively here in the tracks from Colby Caldwell and Keepsakes - patience can lead to very graceful events in music. Put together, these two often totally disparate elements can play off each other or create something unpredictably harmonious, placing a sense of space, time or memory to the work. The material presented in this sequence provides an insight into these ideas, focusing largely on piano based tracks (something about the mechanics and range of physical elements a piano contains made it a natural focus point) but it is not entirely restricted to them.
