That characterization of the fellah as cunning (and always pretending to be poor but secretly hoarding cash) is very widespread throughout Egypt. I've heard it many times. And actually I have to say that that provincial vs. Cairene divide does matter.

Ummm, this is Hossam Tammam who recently pontificated that "Rural folk are cunning and deceptive. That explains what's wrong with the brotherhood: Too many hicks!"

Not suggesting he's a snob, mind you. Just prone to gross oversimplications in at least that one piece.

Nice to see MEI back. It was always packed with terrific information. Interesting that in the "Letter from...Gaza" section, the editors used Franz Krausz's 1936 "Visit Palestine" poster in the upper left hand corner. Perhaps they were trying to be ironic, but Krausz's work was, which was issued by the "Tourist Development Asociation of Palestine" was associated with the Yishuv (pre-state of Israel Jewish community) and its efforts to establish Israel.

I know what you mean: it's the al-Ahram style of journalism. "A prominent personality in a high institution said yesterday that certain regional powers are conspiring to promote a specific agenda." Translated version: "An advisor to the president said yesterday that Iran is using Hamas to damage Egyptian interests."

Israeli Asks Abbas Not to Step Down – NYTimes.com

I also reacted to that. But I think you see this a lot in US newspapers nowadays: they dumb down the headlines by cutting out foreign names that all readers may not be familiar with. Another current example from the NYT, about the Uighur-Han violence in China's Xinjiang province this summer, here transformed into some anonymous "ethnic rioting" in "a western regional capital" reported by "a State news agency":

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/10/world/asia/10xinjiang.html?ref=world

You have to read three paragraphs before they mention any names -- it feels almost insulting, while it could hardly help attract readers. And please don't get me wrong: I say this as an admirer of US broadsheet journalism generally.

hey ursula, youre back in cairo? i actually translated adania for my senior thesis in undergrad. also, i think they prefer to call themselves, (i know alaa said this certainly) palestinian-israelis, or palestinian citizens of israel, not arab-israelis, which is what the israeli govt labels them.

The true baptism of the Holy Ghost comes with penance. In order to come into true fellowship with God all must be reconciled. God sent His Son to the world to die for the world to receive reconciliation. Test and prove for yourself the truth. Name your sins to God in the Name of His Son then be baptized do this you and your household and the congregation too. By your own bedside in the privacy of your own prayer closet(bedside) because this is a conversation between you and God then be baptized.

Cross-cultural polination is very nice, but hardly seems to be the key to peace. Ending the occupation of Palestine and reparations for past crimes would seem the way to go -- interaction alone will not do anything.

I'd point out the obvious that it's not just Arab Israeli writers (or musicans like DAM) that can't travel to many Arab countries, but all Israelis are barred. Just as many Arabs are barred from entering Israel. Unfortunately, everyone is worse off for it.

Even where borders are open, as between Egypt and Israel, there is a metaphysical border of divergent culture, religion and politics that hinders any meaningful exchanges.

Until Israelis and Arabs can interact on levels completely outside the context of conflict - whether in music, art, literature, film or just everyday personal interactions - there will be no chance for true peace in the Middle East.

Israelis could begin by reading the works of Alaa' Hlehel and Adania Chibli. Arabs could start by watching "The Band's Visit."
