Fair Haven, NJ – January 22, 2013 – Trinity Hall, Monmouth County’s newly established all-girls high school in the Catholic tradition that will welcome its first freshman class in September 2013, has announced its new Athletic Director.

The appointment of Ken Santos, former girls' varsity coach at Red Bank Catholic High School (RBC) and a teacher in Little Silver, was announced at an information session for Trinity Hall on January 17. Santos resigned as coach at RBC on January 15.

"We will have high expectations," said Santos in describing the school's mission to produce confident, competitive women through involvement in an athletic program that instills hard work, commitment and respect.

Santos told an audience of 80 prospective Trinity Hall parents that he is in his 11th year of teaching at Markham Place School in Little Silver, and has been coaching at the high school and college level for 16 years. Six of those years were spent as the men's assistant coach at Monmouth University.

Santos is the product of a single-sex high school education at Christian Brothers Academy. After his 1988 graduation from CBA he went on to play soccer on an athletic scholarship at Villanova. In 2011, he was inducted into the Villanova Hall of Fame. Santos has also played professional soccer in the United States and Portugal.

"The experiences that I have had with athletics have played a major role in my life, and I hope to continue to guide the next group of athletes at Trinity Hall in their pursuit of high academic and athletic standards," Santos said.

At RBC, Santos won 6 division titles, two state co-championships, and won the Shore Conference Tournament in 2008, 2009, and 2010. He was recognized as Coach of the Year by both the Asbury Park Press and the Star Ledger in 2005; and was selected as Monmouth County Coach of the Year by the Star Ledger in 2008.

In 2010, Santos was chosen as NJ Coach of the Year in 2010 by the National Federation of State High School Associations, which leads the country in the development of education-based interscholastic sports and activities.

Santos is the father of four, including two young girls. He and his wife Cristina reside in Fair Haven.

Trinity Hall Temporary Location

Santos will coach soccer as well as oversee the athletic program at Trinity Hall, which will reflect the interests of the school's first students and could include basketball, lacrosse, softball and field hockey. Trinity Hall is committed to creating a competitive three-season athletic program. The freshman class will participate in at least two interscholastic sports programs each season, beginning with Freshman and/or Junior Varsity teams. The competition level will grow with the founding class, allowing for Varsity Athletics by year two or three, depending on the sport.

The temporary site includes an academic building; a full-sized gymnasium with a stage, fitness room and locker rooms; an field house for lunch and activities; parking; and outdoor spaces including quality athletic fields. The search for a permanent, centrally-located home for Trinity Hall remains a priority.

NEPTUNE - Toms River North’s Kate Galgano scored her first goal of the season at the best possible time for her team on Wednesday at the Shore Conference Tournament semifinal game against Freehold Township.

Galgano scored three minutes into the first overtime period giving the second-seeded Mariners (16-1) a trip to the SCT finals, after defeating the sixth-seeded Patriots (8-4-4) by a final of 2-1.

After a big throw from the corner by Toms River North’s Emilie Gilbert, the ball was deflected several times until Galgano was able to punch it in for the winner.

“I was standing near the corner of the six, and I saw it bounce off a couple of players,” Galgano said.

“The ball fell right on the line, and I was able to just poke it in.”

For Galgano and her team there were a bit of nerves heading into the first overtime period.

“Yeah we were a little nervous at the start, but we have faith in our team,” Galgano said. “We knew we could do it if we just kept playing hard.”

Toms River North head coach Jerry Klimek saw his team fall behind early after a first period goal from Freehold Township’s Tiffany Cioffi in the 18th minute.

The second half was a different story for the Mariners who responded with an equalizer from Shannon Groffie in the 49th minute.

“We challenged them at halftime,” Klimek said. “If we were going to come back and win, we had to give it our all, and I thought they responded well.”

Tactically North made no changes at the start of the second half, but according to Klimek they came out with more intensity.

That proved to be the difference for the Mariners on this day.

“We had some good things going in the second half,” Klimek said. “We were able to create some scoring chances, and fortunately for us we tied it up.”

According to Klimek, this was only the second time all season that the Mariners had trailed in a game. Partly because of the play from keeper Alyssa Dell’Acqua, who once again had a strong day for the Mariners with 14 saves.

“This kids have been doing this all year, and they really responded in a big way after the first half,” Klimek said.

Even with the tough result, Freehold Township head coach Dave Patterson was still proud of his team’s effort from Wednesday.

Hayley Pascoal had a good game in goal for the Patriots recording 10 saves.

“They worked hard, and showed their grit and skill,” Patterson said. “Soccer goes that way sometimes, it’s the luck of the bounce and it didn’t go our way.”

Heading into the semifinals Patterson knew his team was going to be challenged from a tough Toms River North side.

“Hats off to Toms River North, they fought hard,” Patterson said. “They are a quality team, and it just didn‘t go our way today.”

NEPTUNE - Freehold senior defender Chelsi Bender jumped into senior goalie Sara Cobb’s arms just before the Colonials were to shake hands with Red Bank Catholic after the Shore Conference Tournament semifinal on Wednesday night.

Cobb had the shining moment in the penalty kick round as neither the Colonials or the Caseys let up a goal in 100 minutes of soccer at the Summerfield Elementary School.

So, it was on to the penalty kick round.

Freehold went first in penalty kicks, scored first and maintained the lead in penalty kicks thanks to Cobb saving three of the four penalty kicks she faced.

The final result was Freehold winning, 3-1, on penalty kicks and advancing to Saturday’s 5 p.m. Shore Conference Tournament final against No. 2 seed Toms River North.

“You really don’t know what to expect in penalty kicks. You go with your gut and if you are right then you are right,” said Cobb, who made 10 saves. “So, whatever my gut says, I go with it.”

Her gut led her to deny Red Bank Catholic’s final three penalty kicks, which clinched the victory for the Colonials (16-0).

Freehold sophomore defender Lindsay Cerio was the first shooter and she scored waist high to the left against Red Bank Catholic freshman goalie Jackie Robinson (12 saves) for a 1-0 lead in penalty kicks

Red Bank Catholic senior defender Marina Davi was the Casey’s first shooter and she scored to the lower left to tie it 1-1.

Freehold freshman midfielder Ashley Latona then gave her team the lead for good on a play that she didn’t even see. Latona shot the ball and saw Robinson make the initial stop but the ball deflected off Robinson’s hands and went in as Latona had turned around and was on her way back to midfield.

“I saw our fans cheering and that’s how I knew it went it and that was the best moment ever,” Latona said. “I have my spot and that’s where I went in the game against Manalapan and I scored last time. I was so nervous and then I thought she saved it but then it went in.”

After Latona gave her team the lead, Cobb then closed the door on Red Bank Catholic’s next three shooters junior midfielder Liz Thoreson, junior midfielder Grace Correll and sophomore midfielder Christina Balacco by making three saves.

“My defense has been there for me this entire season. I’m proud to be a part of this team and get the work done that needs to be done on my part,” Cobb said. “They’ve done it for me the entire season and I was very happy to do it for them today.”

Freehold junior midfielder Cori Ahde, the team’s fourth shooter, went top shelf to the right side to score the Colonial’s third penalty kick goal after senior midfielder Delaney Boyer, the team’s third shooter, had her shot saved by Robinson.

“You tell them to pick their spots and go where they are confident. It is a tough thing to do in this kind of atmosphere with people watching, ,” said Red Bank Catholic coach Ken Santos of the penalty kick round.

Freehold had the overall advantage in shots, 18-11, and withstood Red Bank Catholic (17-2) winning the shots total in the first overtime 3-1. The Colonials won the shots total in the second overtime, 2-0, but none of the combined 29 shots in the game resulted in a goal.

Wednesday’s victory for Freehold was also the second consecutive SCT tournament game the Colonials have won on penalty kicks after defeating No. 9 seed Manalapan, 4-2, on penalty kicks on Monday afternoon.

RED BANK - Red Bank Catholic senior forward Mackenzie Cowley showed her athleticism in double overtime of the Caseys’ Shore Conference Tournament quarterfinal game against visiting Colts Neck on Monday evening.

After having her initial shot in double overtime denied by the crossbar, the rebound trickled away to the right side of the net but the ball was redirected back to Cowley and the second time, she didn’t miss.

Cowley’s game-winning goal 2:23 into double overtime lifted the fifth-seeded Caseys past the 13th-seed Cougars, 3-2.

“Honestly, I saw it hit the crossbar and I went black but then I saw the ball coming at me and my first instinct was just hit it again,” Cowley said. “Luckily, this time it went in. I had no idea where the goalie was but I just knew I had to go up with the ball but didn’t want to hit the crossbar again.”

Cowley’s goal ended almost 26 minutes of high-intensity soccer, as neither team scored in the first half and the first goal of the game didn’t come until 23:21 left in the second half.

“You get in the flow of the game and you start to get vibes. I just felt like we had this confidence but we couldn’t finish but we knew it was coming,” Red Bank Catholic coach Ken Santos said of the game-winning goal. “We hit the crossbar three or four times but the girls kept their heads up. At the beginning of the second overtime, they said we are going to end it here, no penalty kicks.”

And that’s what the Caseys (17-1) did.

The game was tied at 2 after regulation. Colts Neck got the only two shots of the first overtime and both were saved by Red Bank Catholic freshman goalie Jackie Robinson (six saves). The Caseys got the only two shots of the second overtime and Cowley’s goal put the Caseys into Wednesday’s 7 p.m. SCT semifinal against No. 1 seed Freehold.

“It was two incredible teams giving it everything they got. Somebody was going to get a piece of magic and that team was going to win,” Colts Neck coach Doug Phillips said. “At this point in time, there is no shame in winning or losing. It had been a phenomenal game.”

It was scoreless soccer for 56 minutes before Red Bank Catholic junior midfielder Liz Thoreson scored at 56:39, giving the Caseys a 1-0 lead. The Caseys didn’t have much time to celebrate as Colts Neck tied it a 58:21 on Amanda Visco’s goal. The Cougars (10-5-1) took the lead on a nifty play on a free kick play from Danielle Krachie.

Krachie lofted the ball over the Red Bank Catholic defense on the right side of the field and junior Oti Laki ran onto the ball and blasted a shot from the right side to the left corner for the lead at 65:55.

That lead didn’t last long as Colts Neck was called for a handball in the box and a penalty kick was awarded to Thoreson at 74:14. Thoreson kicked the ball to the right side just out of the reach of Colts Neck sophomore Megan Royle (12 saves) and that eventually forced the extra sessions.

After two even opportunities of penalty kicks on Monday, Freehold’s senior keeper Sara Cobb lunged to her right and punched Manalapan’s third attempt away opening the door to victory in a Shore Conference Tournament quarterfinal.

Delaney Boyer and Cori Ahde responded with successive match-clinching conversions as the top-seeded Colonials (15-0) were able to outlast the No. 8 Braves (9-5-3) with a 4-2 edge in penalty kicks after the two teams played a scoreless match. Freehold will play fifth-seeded Red Bank Catholic in a semifinal.

Freehold’s Lindsay Cerio and Ashley Latona converted penalty kicks, as did Manalapan’s Jessica Donnelly and Erin O’Grady before Cobb’s stop, and a shot that missed high over the crossbar. Then Boyer and Ahde finished the job.

Cobb was pivotal in the first half, when she knocked away a pair of breakaway shots to preserve the scoreless tie. She finished with four saves in the game. Manalapan’s junior keeper Brianne Nealon stopped all 10 shots she faced.
