Four-run fourth propels Jaguars past Falcons in SCT

When it’s tournament time, big innings usually lead to victories. Such was the case for Jackson Memorial on Thursday during its Shore Conference Tournament first-round contest against Monmouth Regional.

Tied 2-2 after the fourth inning, the 17th-seeded Jaguars (11-6) posted four runs in the top of the fifth to grab the lead for good en route to an 8-2 victory over the 16th-seeded Falcons (13-8). The victory propelled the Jags into the Round of 16, where they will meet top-seeded St. John Vianney.

With one out in the fifth, Sara Marques singled and scored on Kayla Molnar’s triple to left-center with the eventual game-winner. But the Jaguars added three more when Sarah Freyre singled in Kayla Molnar, before Sydney Calderon and winning pitcher Kara Molnar both reached on errors, jamming the bases for Kayla Reale, who singled to score Freyre and Calderon, making it 6-2.

Kayla Molnar ended up 4-for-5, while Novak went 3-for-4, and Kara Molnar and Teresa Carr each added two hits.

IN ANOTHER SCT FIRST-ROUND GAME

RB CATHOLIC 12, MON. DONOVAN 3: Tess Griswold went 3-for-3 with a double and three RBI, while Brynne Bauman went 3-for-4 with an RBI, and Gabby Bram and Jackie Strully each whacked a pair of hits, and Jennifer Mancino pitched the first four innings en route to the victory, as the Caseys (15-8) romped past the Griffins (12-8).

RBC jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first inning, then added four runs in the second and two in third to take command, and the Caseys cruised from there as Mancino allowed five hits and three walks while striking out five. Emily Simon allowed one hit through the final three innings for the save.

Samantha Broo swatted two of Donovan’s six hits. Courtney Tylutki drilled a double as well.

IN REGULAR-SEASON SOFTBALL

TR EAST 2, MIDD. SOUTH 1 (10 inn.): After Tiffani Lambert tripled to right and scored when the throw to third went into dead-ball territory in the third inning, the Raiders (20-3) scored in the bottom of the seventh to tie the contest and later scored in the bottom of the 10th to edge the Eagles (15-8).

With one out in the seventh, Val Hirschfeld singled to right and Alyssa Cenci, running for Hirschfeld, went to second on Sam Lanzano’s infield hit, then scored on a single to right off the bat of Cassondra Anderson.

In the 10th, Cenci started on second base, went to third when Anderson reached on an error, before a bunt single by Jodi Bruno loaded the bases for leadoff batter Taylor Dziedzic, who hit a ball to shortstop. Cenci managed to beat the throw to the plate for the game-winner and head coach Debbie Schwartz’s 496th career win.

Winning pitcher Jordan Weed allowed only Lambert’s triple, struck out 17 and walked none. Lanzano finished 2-for-4.

MATER DEI 5, RED BANK 2: Katelyn Nash went 3-for-4 while Jordan Donohue went 2-for-4, and winning pitcher Jackie Nash scattered seven hits while fanning nine and walking none, as the Seraphs (18-2) captured the nondivisional victory over the Bucs (12-8). Red Bank was led by Darby Olex-Memoli, who went 2-for-3.

WALL 5, MIDD. NORTH 1: Jackie Howarth scattered six hits en route to the victory in the pitcher’s circle, while Katie Wingle slugged a home run and Dani Petrone and Emily Mowen each added doubles, as the Crimson Knights (20-2) scored the nondivisional victory over the Lions (10-7). Quinn Thornton provided the run for North with a solo homer in the fourth.

POINT BORO 6, ST. ROSE 5: Melissa Alfonso went 2-for-3 with three RBI and Ali Blisnuk went 2-for-3 with a double, and Nicole Dayton scattered seven hits and walked three on the way to her first victory of the season in the circle, as the Panthers (3-18) upended the Purple Roses (10-11) in a nondivisional matchup.

RARITAN 8, SHORE 0: Nicole Coppolino fanned eight, walked none and allowed a hit to Lauren Shirley for her first career victory in the circle, and Laura Gesario went 3-for-4 while Daniella Marino drilled a two-run single in the sixth, as the Rockets (16-8) scored the Class A Central victory.

CENTRAL 4, SOUTHERN 1: Kayla Heline, Kylie Smolock and Lindsey Mahnken each swatted doubles, and winning pitcher Stephanie Pepper fired a two-hitter, as the Golden Eagles (13-5) got by the Rams (2-18) in a nondivisional contest.

BY STEVEN FALK
@smfalk
RED BANK Anthony Yaccarine knew exactly what he was looking for when he came to the plate with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the fifth inning on Thursday.

“I was looking for an off-speed pitch,’’ said Yaccarine, a senior right fielder for Red Bank Catholic.

Yaccarine guessed right as he drilled a two-run double on a 2-2 pitch to break a tie. Red Bank Catholic then went on to record an 11-5 win over St. John Vianney in a Monmouth County Tournament semifinal game on the FieldTurf at Count Basie Field.

“He (St. John Vianney reliever Chris Morris) gave me an off-speed pitch first pitch. Then, he threw me a couple of fastballs, and then he came back to the off-speed pitch, and I just sat on it,’’ Yaccarine said.

Red Bank Catholic (21-2) will meet the winner of today’s semifinal between No. 2 seed Christian Brothers Academy and No. 3 seed Wall next week in the championship game at FirstEnergy Park, Lakewood. The championship game will be Monday night if CBA wins today. It will be Tuesday night if Wall wins today.

The double was part of a 4-for-4, five RBI day for Yaccarine, the No. 7 hitter in Red Bank Catholic’s deep lineup.

“I was jus trying to hit them in the gaps and trying to get the runners in from second and third. I got up with runners on base every time,’’ Yaccarine.

Yaccarine had a single to left in his first at-bat in the second inning. That hit did not lead to anything because a Caseys’ base runner was thrown out trying to steal third to end the inning. He lofted a run-scoring, game=-tying triple in the fourth.

In his final at-bat, Yaccarine, who was made aware by his teammates he needed a home run to hit for the cycle, delivered a two-run single to right in the sixth.

Mike Alescio followed Yaccarine’s fifth inning double with a two-run double of his own that extended the Caseys’ lead to 8-4.

Six of the nine hitters in Red Bank Catholic’s lineup had hits and eight of the nine reached base. The Caseys also drew seven walks and had a batter hit by a pitch as they worked the count all day against each of the Lancers’ five pitchers.

“The lineup has been pretty much the same from Day One,’’ said Red Bank Catholic coach Buddy Hausmann said. “I knew what they (each of his players) were capable of. When they were going to be capable, you never know. But, they (each of his players) are in there (the lineup) for a reason.

“Alescio (the No. 8 hitter) has come through a couple of times now. Daniele (Nick Daniele, the No. 9 hitter) was coming through for a while. Iacobellis (leadoff hitter and center fielder Joe Iacobellis) was hot, forever, carrying us in the beginning.’’

Hausmann said he has been waiting for Mike Rescigno, the No. 3 hitter and a University of Maryland recruit, and cleanup batter Al Molina to get hot. Both have shown signs of getting hot lately. Rescigno hit a booming two-run homer to center in the third inning, his fourth homer of the season.

“If one of us hits, all of us hit,’’ Yaccarine said. “Everyone gets on. Everyone gets on each other and we all pick each other up.’’

Red Bank Catholic, which has a Shore Conference Tournament round of 16 game at home on Saturday against Manalapan, will be trying to win its first MCT title. The Caseys have lost in the MCT championship game each of the last two seasons.

IN A MCT QUARTERFINAL:

CBA 11, HOWELL 1: Joe Dudek hit a three-run homer in the first inning, his sixth homer of the season and freshman right-hander Luca Dalatri pitched a two-hitter to improve to 5-1 as the Colts (16-3) defeated the Rebels (11-9) for their 13th straight win/

Dalatri struck out nine and walked one.

Anthony Critelli went 2-for-4 with two RBI and Ryan Ramiz was 3-for-4 and scored two runs.
