Toms River Regional Schools District Administrator, Joe Arminio, said Saturday night he had a candidate to recommend at the November meeting of the Toms River Regional Board of Education to replace Tom Carpenter as head boys basketball coach at Toms River East. Arminio said in October that Carpenter would not coach this season on advice of his doctor after suffering a stroke this summer. It isn't known if this is a temporary or permanent replace at this time.

Rumson-Fair Haven Regional athletic director Walt Resier said on Tuesday afternoon that assistant boys basketball coach Chris Champeau was promoted to head basketball coach earlier this summer to replace former coach James Young, who left to be the head girls basketball coach at Red Bank Regional.

Colts Neck senior forward Brittany Howes broke her left foot recently and will be out of action until around New Year's her mother confirmed via email earlier today. It's the same foot that had Howes in a boot for a portion of this past summer.

Howes is one of six returning seniors from a Cougars team that went 29-4 last season and advanced to the NJSIAA Tournament of Champions for the first time, where it fell to St. John Vianney.

MY TAKE: This is ominous news for a team that not only has legitimate aspirations to get back to the TOC, but they are one of probably four or five teams on paper at this point that has the talent to win the whole thing.

Howes has been Colts Neck's top rebounder the last few seasons and with a non-existent bench last season, Howes spent the second half of the season platooning with Leeann Lanza and Emily Laurence. Despite the team's success, Colts Neck has been known to get worked over on the boards at times and this will not help.

A quick look at the schedule, Colts Neck opens at Middletown South on December 18 and will participate in the Trenton Catholic Holiday Tournament. I haven't seen the field for that yet, but I'll bet with TCA as the host, there won't be many cupcakes.

After New Year's is the real meat of the regular season for Colts Neck. The Cougars will play Shabazz and Rumson and back to back days (Jan. 16-17) and New York City power and reigning New York State Federation Class AA champion St. Michael's Academy on Jan. 24. There is also matchup with '09 Non-Public B finalist Bishop Eustace on Jan. 31

My co-worker Stephen Edelson passed on a bit of news that Neptune boys basketball coach Ken O'Donnell had heart surgery last Wednesday and was in the ICU until Sunday.

O'Donnell has been the boys basketball coach at Neptune for the last 17 years, including leading the Scarlet Fliers to the NJSIAA Group III state title last year.

He will be inducted into the Neptune High School's Hall of Fame's inaugural class on Friday, Oct. 23.

O'Donnell is also the league commissioner for the Jersey Shore Basketball League.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My take: Ken O'Donnell has been a tremendous asset to the Shore Conference basketball scene and to me personally as a reporter here at the Asbury Park Press. I can always get a honest, straight forward answer out of O'Donnell on anything concerning basketball at the high school level. I'm hoping O'Donnell makes a speedy recovery and is back on the basketball court real soon.
