A house design on a triangular plot. Following a typical triangular shape of the site, the house also tries to follow suit, but in doing so we are left with dead spaces. To tackle this problem, I turned the the triangle space into a heptagon one. This helps in first getting rid of dead spaces and increases the surface area for greater view of the greenery around.

三角形の敷地に七角形の住宅。三角形の家にすると死角が出てくる。それを解決するのに七角形に変形して、また周辺の緑景色を表面面積増する為、十分楽しむ事をできる。

This is another product of series of the ceilingtecture that I like to do. I just finished a renovation project for an apartment in Roppongi Hills. The client idea was to have an open space, and with that request comes the challenge of how to make the big space amicable. This I did by creating imaginary territories from the ceiling.

Idea housing is a platform to bring all ideas to the table towards improving our homes and urban fabric. Great ideas start from a single thought, therefore harnessing this snapshot is of utmost importance. Next step will be implementing the ideas by collaborating with the government, NGO, well wishers or at private capacities. Oh by the way any one is invited to drop an idea, regardless if you are an architect or not, it will be shaped, thats what architects are for right? Shaping ideas in to life.

Tominaga, Harada san and I went to Kesennuma気仙沼, one of the badly hit places from the 311 event.
It was obvious that what caused much damage was due to tsunami effect, that blow away the first layer of most houses.
It was noticeable that most wooden houses went down, leaving the concrete foundation intact. The joint between the concrete Footing and the house is normally bolted together by anchor bolt, these too were ripped off. I can imagine how the architectural code will be changed to cater for future cases. foundations that were about 1m from the ground withstood most of the damage as the concrete acted as a secondary blockage.

For the building that withstood the earthquake structurally but were not dilapidated by water, this cladding system is great:
1. it increases the insulation quality of the building. EPS Heat Transfer Coefficient / 熱伝達率0.028W/mK
2. You can make any desirable design form ー have a new facade
3. Light weight and can be self built by owner of the house.

The image above is your typical temporary housing: monotonous and boring. I would like to suggest way of improving the existing scenario with infilling the landscape with objects that can work towards soothing the hearts and enhancing community feeling

This is the arrangement of the units.

By regrouping and changing shapes and orientation of the units, a less congested feel is brought to life. There is also identity for each unit just by changing its orientation.

The next step and where we come in is the in filling of the space between the units. These space are aminly to interact and connect the occupants. Occupants will have opportunity to practice their hobbies and even drink sake in the evening.

After the devastating damage on the land, there are very few people who want to go back to to their former sites. The land can be used to harness energy, water catchment and also as a memorial park. events can also be held here annually. The sculptured landscape will have solar panels to reduce the energy strife due to the closure of nuclear plants. Another important aspect is that as a tourist attraction many foreign visitors would be able to pay tribute and learn more out of these.

The way we build our building in the shores will have to change to allow for water passage. the "hole" in the middle of the house not only for emergency purposes, but allows for ventilation of the complex. Same building made out of RC or SRC should withstand hydro-pressure to allow for temporary evacuation at the roof top that should also have helicopter

Initial Study 3D

During the demolition, the bag of unknown revealed like debris comprising bricks, old wooden electric post, urns..you name it buried way back during the 2nd world war. That in itself was 'surprising' at the the way the govt at that time dealt with the aftermath issues, it will always come back when you least expect it!
The site therefore had to be dug deeper than usual to about 1m and a followup reinforcement of neighboring blocks had to be done.

　現在のケニア建築は自己のアイデンティティーを確かめつつ、進展しています。かつてない程の住宅発展と中国からのディヴェロッパーの存在のために、私たちはケニアの建築技術と文化をより綿密に説明しなければならないという必要性を感じるようになっているのです。建築を通して解決すべき問題点としては、国内強制追放者の移住・住宅計画、スラム問題、ローコスト住宅等が挙げられます。
　ケニアは２０１０年８月２７日に新しい憲法を発布し、徹底的改善計画をほどこしました。「新ケニア」というスローガンは政治の分野においてのみならず、国民感情の面においても、同様に現れています。こうした状況を背景として、建築という分野においても、同様の変化が現れています。建築という技術は複雑です。したがって、他の技術と違って、「コピー＆ペースト」的な変化は建築には起こり得ません。むしろ、そこに求められる方法は、ケニアと日本の間における、建築技術者や都市計画者、女性や子どもたちの協力関係を伴う対話をなくしては、成り立ち得ないと考えます。

I visited NYC on July 26th-Aug 8th and this is what I thought of this great City.
The most important aspect to take in urban planning and design lies on Embracing first and foremost the physical constraints of your city or urban setting, setting them as your active or inactive basis as you see fit to base your design or you deliberately detach yourself (sometimes in a bid to reach other goals like universal design concepts). Therefore depending on how creative you are with your physical environmental constraints, you will create new social and economical interactions.

1月30日より駐日ケニア共和国大使館で開催されるAAP (African Architecture Project) 初の展覧会「AAP Living KENYA」展のオープニングに行ってきました。AAPは、東京を拠点にアフリカの建築を勉強し世の中に広めていくことを目的とし3年程前にスタートしました。現在、ケニア出身の建築家ディック・オランゴさん、個人や設計事務所など建築に携わる日本人4名がコアメンバーとして活動しています。赤道直下に位置するケニアのハウジングスタディ。「赤道直下は北も南もなく太陽が真上にある状況です。太陽の位置からどのような形が良いかを考えました」と担当の山崎裕史さん。六角形に内在する長方形に注目したというMASONRY 組積造についてのスタディ。「ケニアの建築の多くが柱・梁・床が鉄筋コンクリートで、壁は石による組積で構築した混構造です。石材ブロックの素材感を活かしながらも、より多用な表情を持つ建築を誘発するような構法を目指して検討を進めました。」と担当の三浦慎也さん。

MUD ARCHITECTURE FOR AFRICAN ECONOMY

Architecture is culture. I will start first by reiterating this adage. Unlike many other science disciplines, architecture is closely knitted to culture of any given society. Architecture, in recent times is changing in its ideology and approach. Architecture is becoming more and more human focused and less iconic. There is a shift from the industrial influence to environmental influence. Today Architecture is more of a by-product (rather than the goal product) of the influence of economy, environment and the Internet. In Africa, human relationship is one of the biggest elements of life and this increasingly affects African approach to architecture. As a tool of economic development and cooperation between any 2 countries, the built is statement has been a measure criterion. But unfortunately we have rarely applied architecture as a means of measuring economic and cultural development. The built is quantifiable in terms of mass and monetary value; architecture will also entail the stewardship of good living.

INFORMAL SECTOR
It is said that by 2030 60% of Kenya will be urban areas. This is due he continued rural-urban migration. I have chosen to dwell on the informal sector because you will find African architecture in its ‘purity’. Building methods are still tradition. The task that we face is to elevate the lifestyle in the informal sector to the present modern level without abandoning useful African oriented design concepts. An analogous scenario is the one seen when a Maasai in his mud hut and cattle beside but using Nokia to communicate with partners. This kind of leap can also be thought about in architecture too. Designs in the informal sector should be flexible, attractive and sustainable in nature. Architecture should not be dictating (iconic) in nature on how it should be used but rather architecture should allow for flexibility of activities. This is because any particular location will have its own practices and beliefs. Constructing concrete square row classes in remote areas might not be the solution to lack of education; the structure obviously becomes misplaced (the wrong solution for the right problem). The same principle applies to construction of religious centers, hospitals markets etc.

INTERNET, SUN AND MUD!
SUN. Solar energy. Sub-Saharan African is known for it hot climate, but most of the house don’t tap this free energy. Capital cost is definitely a setback but the benefits that will arise from having power are far-reaching. Having power will mean business can go on uninterrupted by the nightfall. The design of the market place will also create a constant flow of goods and services. INTERNET. Designing to incorporate solar energy and Internet is indispensable. The net will allow for open source consumer driven innovation. Design will be based on the needs of the locals and it also allows for awareness of the locals against the rest of the world. MUD2. Design in the informal sector will create a great collaboration of organic design and digital design, a rare phenomenon up until recently. Mud has qualities that we need to use more often. Its insulation quality for example is something that is needed in the west. Also as a finishing material, it comes in different sheds and densities, allowing for variation in design. Mud (earth) is a sustainer of life! It can be used for cooling effect in modern cities at very low cost. Mud has great disposable features; mud is earth and it goes back to the soil after use. Cradle to cradle design. The topology, landscape and ecosystem of a place will also be kept in balance. Sustainability is a prerequisite for any design henceforth. With the combination of Internet, sun and mud, I believe new programs will be developed which will add spice to life!

URBAN IMPLICATIONS
A problem with modern African cities today lies in the way of their growth. The difference pace of economic vs. the human (demographic and cultural) growth creates a city under strain. Problems like slums and sprawl, security issues, lack of touch and lack of identity are not uncommon to many of the African big cities. We are therefore faced with the task of nurturing a true model of an African city especially in the villages by designing based on the economic and cultural tenets of the locals. Laying down nature foundation so that when construction starts, the ecosystem is affected much. Active forestation! With service-based economy becoming popular, the influx of goods and people is bound to happen. This affects the general out look of the city. Here again economic development should be done on an architectural context and vice versa for controlled urban growth. Over the years and recently in Africa, the lifestyle of women is changing drastically. It is no longer in the kitchen as was known, but more on the open city. Urban space and house will have to consider this anatomy. Priority should be given to designs that are children and women centered at the same time blending with environment.

GRANTS/AID
When there is aid for construction, a terrible mistake happens; lack of locals’ participation, imposed foreign building methods, materials, tight schedules and irrelevant priorities. Lack of prior survey of the areas’ demographics, climatic conditions etc will create, not architecture but just a busy body. Prior study of the place will also identify which direction should be taken; either agriculture or tourism which ultimately will enable building relevant infrastructure. Tight schedules will not allow for consideration of cultural aspects of the project. With prior survey, economical issues will be dealt with realistically, especially after assessing the material, labor and administrative cost. All these process, needless to say needs local experts collaboration.

FLEX WALL

A HOUSE THAT WILL BE RESPONSIVE TO CLIMATE, ENVIRONMENT AND HUMAN NEEDS WHICH IN TURN, NATURALLY, WILL THE MAIN STRUCTURE IS REINFORCED CONCRETE,THE WALLS ARE FLEXIBLE AND CAN BE PULLED, PUSHED AND BENT TO SUIT YOUR ERGONOMICAL NEEDS. WIND, SUNS RAYS AND RAIN CAN BE CONTROLLED. VIEWS AND SCENERIES CAN BE RECREATED AT WILL. THE CANTILEVER CONCRETE SLAB ALLOWS FOR INTERACTION WITH NEIGHBORS AND THE SURROUNDING AIR AT 2F LEVEL (GL+4200). SPACE IS ESSENTIALLY FREE. THERE IS NO DEFINITE SPACE FOR ANY ACTIVITY BUT RATHER SPACE IS FORMED AS A RESULT OF THE PRESENT ENVIRONMENTAL AND HUMAN NEEDS. THE WALLS THEREFORE ACT AS FISH FINS CONTROLLING ELEMENTS OF THE ENVIRONMENT AND HUMAN, AND BY DOING THAT IT FORMS INTERESTING INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL VIEWS AND SCENERIES.
