Shafqat Tanvir Mirza (STM) gave many sacrifices for the love of the Punjabi language but never made public his sacrifices and consistently struggled for his cause against heavy odds. I had the opportunity and the privilege to know and work with Shafqat Tanvir Mirza. He was a mentor and a friend, always available and supportive. Besides his intellectual guidance, I will never forget his kindness and supportive spirit. I feel very proud to have been a part of his struggle.

My father, Prof. Ramzan Shahid, takes you on a ride into the life of the torch bearer of Punjabi Language Movement & Resistance. If there are Punjabi departments in PU, GC and other colleges and universities, or if you can opt for the subject of Punjabi for Intermediate, it is just because of the efforts of Shaqat Tanvir Mirza (aka STM).

Shafqat Tanvir Mirza was born on February 6, 1932 at Domeli, district

Jhelum. STM the most vocal advocate of Punjabi language in Pakistan. He was awarded the Presidential Award for Pride of Performance in 2005. His weekly columns ‘Punjabi Themes’ and ‘Punjabi Books’ in Dawn, were the most forceful voices for the defense and promotion of the Punjabi language.

He translated a number of works from English to Punjabi:

Game of Thrones: 11 Burning Questions About White Walkers, Dragons, and More

Did you catch all the new info flying fast and furious?

This post contains frank discussion of Season 7, Episode 6 “Beyond the Wall.” If you’re not caught up or don’t want to be spoiled, now would be the time to leave. Seriously, I won’t warn you again. Skedaddle.

This episode was packed with a lot of action but also, surprisingly, a lot of new rules of the Game of Thrones universe. These rules—specifically as they pertain to White Walkers—will be vital in understanding the war to come in Season 8, so make sure you caught it all.

How Do Those Flaming Swords Work and Why Doesn’t Everyone Have One? In the books Thoros of Myr lights his sword with wildfire while Beric uses his own blood (and some magic) to light the flame. That’s how the show version of the character seemed to do it when he fought the Hound back in Season 3. There was a whole ritual and everything. So that explains why they were so rare back then.

But now they just seem to turn on whenever Thoros and Beric want them to. Handy! So once again, I wonder why everyone didn’t have one of those in this particular fight. Then again, it didn’t save Thoros of Myr.

Also, always make sure your flaming sword is out before continuing on your quest and be sure not to use them as a heat source during a long night in the cold.

How, Exactly, Do You Kill a Wight?: Back in Season 1 the only way to kill a wight was to use fire. This, eventually, was how to Jon was able to stop one from attacking Lord Commander Mormont in the episode “The Pointy End.” In fact, nothing else he tried worked. This is Jon struggling against just one reanimated corpse.

Okay so why were Jorah, Tormund, etc. able to cut through all those wights this week like they were paper?

Well, somewhere between Season 1 and Season 7, the rules changed slightly. Turns out dragonglass can take out a wight and a White Walker. Jon said as much this season in Episode 2.

And if you look closely, in this episode, Jorah has a dragonglass dagger, Tormund has a dragonglass axe, and even the red shirts had dragonglass-tipped spears.

The episode didn’t bother to show the team gearing up (why not?), but upon close examination, the dragonglass weapons explain why Jon and his friends were able to survive as long as they did. (Jon, of course, came well-equipped with his White-Walker-busting Valyrian sword.) Apparently dragonfire cannot melt a White Walker, though. We saw the Night King stroll right through one blast.

But let’s remember, there’s one more way to kill a White Walker.

The “Sire” Approach: The concept of “sires” is quite popular in vampire lore, but in this week’s episode we see it applied to White Walkers as well. Jon and his friends discover that when you kill a White Walker you also kill all the wights it has made (or “sired”). This is a huge new rule and changes everything we know about the war to come.

Now, instead of a fight against a massive army it becomes a fight to kill one man—the man who made all the White Walkers and wights who serve him.

Can Wights Swim?: Some people wondered why the wights at Hardhome let Jon and his men get away in those boats. Or why they didn’t just swim around the Wall at any point. Well, turns out wights can’t swim. Now we know.

How Do You Kill a Dragon?: The scorpion bolt that Bronn sent flying at Drogon a few episodes ago barely pierced the dragon’s skin but we’ve seen these ice weapons of the White Walkers do crazy things before.

So with a magical ice javelin and magical White Walker aim, you can take down a dragon. The Night King wisely aimed for the neck, where Viserion was gathering fire for his deadly blasts. The fire in the throat exploded and the poor dragon went down in flames.

We already knew the Night King could turn animals into zombies thanks to the reanimated polar bear we saw earlier in the episode. We’ve also seen the White Walkers riding on the back of decaying horses. Will we eventually see Viserion decay? Sadly, probably, yes. For more info on zombie/ice dragons you can go here.

Can Wight/White Walker Talk?: In the past, these creatures have seemed to communicate telepathically but in this episode the wight that Jon and his friends kidnap seems to scream for help. And help arrives.

How Long Does It Take a Wight to Turn?: Given what we’ve seen the past few seasons, the process of turning a dead person into a wight seems pretty instantaneous. That doesn’t seem to have been the rule back in Season 1, when a couple of dead men snuck into Castle Black by...playing possum? It’s unclear. But back then even Sam knew the score, saying those corpses (who were long decayed) didn’t smell like rot the way they should have. “Touched by white walkers,” he later explains, “that’s why they came back. That’s why their eyes turned blue.”

Okay But Can the Dead Cross the Wall?: Last season, Benjen Stark explained the protective rules of the Wall: “The Wall’s not just ice and stone,” he told Bran and Meera. “Ancient spells were carved into its foundation. Strong magic. To protect men from what lies beyond. And while it stands, the dead cannot pass. I cannot pass.” This, many speculated, was why it has taken the White Walkers so long to come south. They’ve been trying to figure out a way to break the spells.

But then how did those wights cross into Castle Black in Season 1? How did the Hound haul a struggling wight through the Eastwatch gate in this week’s episode? Was the Hound able to succeed because Daenerys flew him over? Once again, the rules seem unclear.

How Short Is Kit Harington?: The actor’s height seems to be the new running joke of Season 7. As is the case with most actors in Hollywood, Harington’s real height may always remain a mystery. But the writers are having fun with it while they can.

There was a Breaking news last night on a local telivision that Earthquake of approx. 8 magnitude hit Tonga and it was under sea and Tsunami warnings were broadcasted, the news itself was very terrifying even being quite far from the quake site.

So last night and I searched for its details and came across some wonderful & beautiful picture's of something very dangerous and fierce in reality; nature seems aesthetically pleasing even in its most terrifying & angry times. I feel very much interested in the insights of such universal phenomenon's, such as global warming, space, planet earth, and even if its a lost civilization discovered under the oceans and bla bla bla... In all these there are prominent signs for the believer's; there is some One who is really managing everything, mankind has been searching for all the answers to the how's and when's from the very begining and the pursuit continues till this day. Where all that we 'are' and all what is 'there' took no time more than it is required to pronounce the word "KUN".

To me such sites are very captivating and majestic (U can call me CRAZY in this respect); as the one captured below holds a lot of Drama & fear in itself. If it reminds me of a huge ballad dancer wearing a black dress and performing, so does it remind me of the bombings on Palestine as well...

The picture below however, feels as if the SAND- MONSTER is also attacked by Venom as Spidey is attacked in its 3rd part...

It Happens only in Pakistan....

Welcome to Pakistan :)
You will wait... let the VIP pass, all that Black-Bullet-Proof shine with sunroof's and the motorcade aaah!! what a wonderful site. Is it a security concern, or a power show-off? Traffic remains hampered daily due to the VIP movement. Motorists are stopped on the barriers on the route of the VIPs at least for 30 to 40 minutes. I got late for the meeting today - due to the same reason, they completely separated Lahore for 30mins. No body could cross from one side of lahore to the other as nobody was allowed even near the middle artery of Lahore; The Mall Road.

They simply do not care, there are routines people follow: children need to go to and from school, people go to work, old people may need to get from one place to the other and many of us, for various reasons, may be on our way to hospital. We might also be working within certain deadlines: somebody might have to get a document attested in order to file it the next day, somebody might have to go to the bank to get money for a payment that evening etc etc. For completing these sorts of everyday tasks we all rely on some sort of predictability in city life and routines. But then, in breezes a so-called VIP and blocks the traffic for miles just so his cavalcade can whizz by on a clear road. And meanwhile the rest of us sweat it out stuck in a maddening traffic jam. Pretty disgusting really. We then try to vent our anger by screaming at the scrawny police men who have to stand along the 'VIP route' for hours, and who are absolutely not responsible for the situation. Sad.

Yet they have called for another strike today, and still the LonG MarCH is yet to come... aarrgh!!! They are fighting for Democracy, restoration of a supreme order - but hey, I can't have my breakfast now :( the store in the Lower Ground of my office building "Cash & Carry" and all markets are closed.. Damn it!! That's all that matter's to me or the public in general, they cant go for shopping, even travelling they are scared that their car might be burnt up or thrashed by the people who claim to be fighting for JUSTICE.. yeah justice it is, thrashing up the sweet car of a 50year old man who had recently bought the car after 30years of employment - They surely are teaching a lesson to the corrupt people huh!!

Pakistan is already dead in terms of economic or political conditions, we are in a power crises, we are labelled as a terrorist breeding farm and we let our guests die right on the road's we have other better things to take care of such as the security for Mr. Nawaz Innocent. It had to be increased coz his assassination was ordered from an unconfirmed source (they tell on the media), that's why he had the bullet proof glass surrounded over the rostrum when he was addressing the public. That is exactly the reason why we could not provide the bullet proof glass to the poor guests from Siri Lanka, we had to save our leader's first =)

We all are I guess fed up of these political changes after every year and the same parties emerging repeatedly and then a military Hitler in between at regular intervals, seems to be a never ending BALAJI SERIAL... I wonder what the world power's want from us...

Till now I have come to a conclusion that we are certainly not capable enough to utilise the resources we have on our land; we are too busy in exploiting the resources yet revealed. All other supreme power's are after the resources be it human resource or petrol/gas resources and even COAL and GOLD, then why don't we welcome America once again, simply to hold control. "IN" they already are... thanks to the Anti-terroristic-musharraf approach who worked on the sleek Line of Fire in order to provide a base to US drones in N.Waziristan and Afghanistan. They... the very word They reminds me of the movie They (2002) in which the main character's find out that "THEY" four have been tagged in their childhood, and demons are coming to get them to the darkness... LMAO!! and yeah we have been tagged quite earlier as well and they are coming as well, giving us nightmare's in the form of Afghanistan, N.W, Iran.. We should welcome them to rule over us, at least they are SANE enough to give basic human rights and boost our economy - they will never hurt the common man and will transform this country into a DEVELOPED country... And I remain hungry and its lunch time now... I wonder if Mac.Donald's is opened today...

FOR ALL THE RAVIAN'Z

There are two kinds of people around you. One who wait for things to happen and one who make things happen.

This year, during the second Pak India Inter-Collegiate Drama Festival, March 3-9,2008 at Government College University (GCU), Lahore, I met an ample number of the second kind and feel extremely proud to have been a part of this convergence of budding performers. Why I feel that this endeavor was a coming together of people who make things happen is because the annual theatre festival, that is witnessing its second anniversary this year, is a commendable initiative on part of GC Dramatics Club. Dr. Farhan, incharge GCUDC as well as convener of the fiesta, and his young guns are a shining example of those having the courage to visualize new milestones.

The bi-national level event being yet in its nascent stage, there was a general buzz regarding its inception. Also, on this one particularly beautiful night in the GC campus during a TV talk show, Ek Aur Pehlu, Dr Farhan himself recounted the main achievement of the club in 2007. This was the Pak-India Collegiate in March in which three colleges of India LSR, Hansraj and Kamla Nehru - their respective dramatics societies contacted by him personally through e-mail - participated along with institutions from all over four provinces of Pakistan. The event was a huge success, covered widely. A step further was taken by DU in November 2007. On its invitation, the GCUDC team toured India and performed at colleges like Hindu, Kamla Nehru and the IHC.And so this year in March, Dr.Farhan and his squad kept the fire burning and organized a “dazzling collage of amateur drama productions from India and Pakistan at one place with a finesse expected of professionals” in the words of Prof. Dr. Khalid Aftab, Vice Chancellor,GCU.

A deep sense of appreciation is owed to the Universities and their VCs on both sides, and various sponsors for their support in realizing this interaction. It is going to be interesting to add here that legends of Hindi cinema like Dev Anand and Balraj Sahni are among the distinguished alumni of GCU. In the subsequent years of partition, this sort of mobility of talent came to a halt, but GCU’s initiative will go a long way in re-discovering the bonds especially in performing arts.

On a lighter note, I would like to travel back into those ten very fond days which began with alternating moments of excitement and apprehension when we decided that we are going to Lahore.

Our journey began on the night of March 1 from Delhi. Reaching Amritsar in the morning the next day, we walked across the Wagah Border into Pakistan to be received by Dr.Farhan and his student council.

The splendor of the GC building like that of a castle left us bowled over. We instantly fell in love with the clock tower, the Big Ben of GC.The first evening of our stay, the college bus which I would now say was the most wonderful companion with us throughout, and the man who maneuvered the caravan - our driver, the most adorable person around - took us to Gwalmandi Food Street. The ambience was totally dreamlike, its décor recreating the vibe of the Mughal period. Needless to add, the local food and deserts were irresistible.

The next day, third onwards, the festival began. A delightful opening ceremony in the college’s Bokhari Auditorium was followed by the first performance of the carnival, Henrik Ibsen’s “A Doll’s House” by GCUDC .From here, the festival really took off. In a span of one week, participating teams from Lahore, Multan, Bahawalpur, Quetta, Peshawar, Punjab and teams from DU (Hindu, Khalsa, LSR, Ramjas, and Venketeshwara) showcased their plays.

We had no idea that fresh acquaintances were soon to transform into deep friendships.

Our friends at GC were a family within themselves and they took us in too, with warm and welcoming hearts making our experience the most exquisite one.

Our friends took us around the city - Andrun Shehar (walled old city of Lahore), Lahore Fort, Heritage Museum, Gurdwara Dera Sahib. Chit-chatting and making a riot in the bus, driving through the Mall Road, shopping at our favorite Anarkali market, making post dinner plans to drive up to the suave city piazza, the Fortress made up much of what was complete fun.

The hosts, each and every person made a special place for himself in our hearts. Besides, our brief interaction with teams like FJW University, UET Lahore and those from Peshawar and Quetta provided us with a pleasant insight into their lives and into our own from their eyes! As the Festival came to an end, the last few nights become more and more precious… Some of us collected for an exciting round of folk songs and dance and music; some sat and soaked up the beauty of the atmosphere till dawn…

We had no clue that to head homewards was going to make our hearts so heavy. But, we were all quite loaded with a sense of separation on the last night of our stay. The next morning was action all over again - signing diaries, posters, exchanging autographs and taking pictures.

The culture at GCU is inspiring; the institution has standards which are a class apart. I wish great success for GCUDC and this festival in years to come. And like one of the teachers from DU said during the closing address, we all do wish that the time comes soon when our friends in Lahore decide to drive down to Delhi for a weekend and we make it to Anarkali for a shopping stop once in a while.

These kind of stories really scare me, as I am a kind of person looking for guarantees... And then they also say that "If your looking for guarantees - go buy a battery" LMAO!!! its a big decision of life, and decisions made on time can take you ahead by leaps and bounds or vice versa but its always been difficult for me (a typical Libra) deciding with my indecisive powers... at least one should have someone to blame for a decision turning bad later (im bad..they call me a villian..*giggle*)

At work; specially here in our land of this planet, politicization leaves no space for policies...
the one's in connection with the one's in power have the illegal power to get away with anything. The factor's which are supposed to be neutral stand there supporting the one's who override the genuinely genius and yet they remain covered in triple-folds...
I have learned, however, that the believed mentor is certainly not of the sincere kind, everyone has to save one's 'individual' ass... Hiring is stopped everywhere and it's not the best time to change....
