Just got back a few days ago from an interesting trip out West. Presentations, beach, Korean food, tacos, big plates of Pad Thai.. yeah, it was fun. I think I even learned a thing or two.

This is my diagram of the evolution of normal pancreatic ducts towards dysplastic pre-cancer lesions. In literature and floating on the internet, there really is one popular diagram, which was done by a medical illustrator who was connected to the Hopkins pancreas group over a decade ago. This is somewhat inspired from that.. but I think reflects the PanINs lesions in mice better (mice ducts are small.. you don't get as much of the papillary architecture). Pretty simple.

Mouse kidney transplantation

Vascularized kidney transplants were performed in mice as previously described¹⁶. Briefly, animals were anesthetized with isoflurane, and the donor kidney, ureter, and bladder were harvested en bloc, including the renal artery with a small aortic cuff and the renal vein with a small caval cuff. These vascular cuffs were anastomosed to the recipient abdominal aorta and vena cava, respectively, below the level of the native renal vessels. Total ischemic time averaged 35 to 40 minutes. Donor and recipient bladders were attached dome to dome. The right native kidney was removed at the time of transplant, and the left native kidney was removed through a flank incision four days later. Overall surgical mortality was approximately 40%, and there were no significant differences in perioperative mortality between the experimental groups.

Sleep isn't easy.. can't remember when I got into bed, but I've been back awake since 4 and the process of falling back asleep hasn't been working so well.

I'll occasionally occupy these blocks of AM time in the dark doing work. Honestly, not that productive.

For the past year, I've been in essentially an immunology lab with a population mostly of surgeons (weird, huh? no, this isn't a transplant lab. although yes, we do have organ tolerogenicity stuff). Above is what I've spent a lot of time looking at: pancreatic ducts of mice. This little guy had some pretty nasty pancreatitis for a couple of weeks. The tissue is somewhat of a mess, the ducts have lost their normal appearance. The ductal cells are much more columnar.. the nuclei look a bit odd. It is thought this duct is on a path towards cancer. Yup, this is what I do.

I'm back in NYC after a long month out West (spent maybe 40 days over there). It was good: good operations, good surgeons, a strong medical team.. but yeah, I missed the usual work that I had gotten used to and other important things in NYC as well..

Above is the the corner of the lab I'll be hanging around for the next couple of months.

HP Slimline Fail

Had an interesting situation today with a nice smell of burning electronics upon entering my room. Desktop computer not booting, not even turning one. PSU would go one briefly, followed by a slight increase in the small of burning electronics. After opening it up, exposing the PSU, and powering on with PSU exposed, it became clear where the smell was coming from. I think there may even had been a poof of smoke.

Now, waiting a week for a new PSU to come in.. until then, using my impressively slow laptop.

This past month has been super busy. I've been on research elective for the past month, which in theory should be chill, but I've been working my ass off - being productive. Unfortunately, using my camera/s has been rare and I haven't had time to do my usual looking into the crystal ball and systematically analyze what may happen in the Giro (although, I have a feeling that Vino will win this year.. he's in good form, and is much stronger mentally than Cadel).

Things have been busy. Although I've still been doing my usual following of pro cycling, haven't had time to try to really analyze and figure out what the specifics on what's going on. The past couple of big races have been interesting/exciting, but we're all still waiting for the good stuff as things get closer to July.

On my side, I'm on my Peds rotation, seeing kids in clinic, advising them to eat breakfast and the usual stuff. Nothing too interesting.

It took 1 week for my local CVS to fix their film scanner...

Shorpy, the 100-Year-Old Photo Blog

An interesting site with a large collection of photographs from the first half of the 20th century. The site's name comes from a 14 year old 'greaser' named Shorpy from 1910 --> photo here. Really cool collection that let's you take a glimpse into the world 100 years ago.

Hasselblad 500C/M

The new toy I've been handling for the past week (this past week of vacation) is a 1982 Hasselblad 500C/M. It's different from the usual 35mm rangefinder or SLR. It's quite a bit slower and I find myself thinking just a bit more on what I'm trying to shoot; thinking before I hit the mirror release button, followed by the shutter release button. And there is always that question if a tripod and a shutter release cable would have been more appropriate. Loading film is also a bit clumsier than my usual pit stop speed film change. Oh yeah, and this puppy is big. Carrying it is much more of an ordeal than the SLR or rangefinder I can slip into my large coat pockets. It's maybe 8-9 inches long and about 4 inches tall and wide. But for all the hassle it adds to shooting, it's definitely a lot of fun.
