Samsung today announced the next in their line of  DUOS handsets - the Galaxy Ace DUOS.  Slotted for a June release date, the new device supports dual SIM cards, but is GSM only (7.2 mbps HSDPA). The Galaxy Ace DUOS sports Android 2.3 Gingerbread, an 832MHz processor, 512MB RAM, 3.5-inch HVGA display, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 3GB internal memory, microSD card slot (expandable to 32GB), A-GPS, 5MP camera and 1300mAh battery.  Look for the phone to launch in June across Russia, followed by Europe,Latin America, Asia, Middle East, Africa, China, and more.

The Android team over at Google today announced an update to its Google Play Store which now allows Android users to purchase in-app subscriptions.  Much like in-app purchases did when they were introduced, this will open the door to plenty of new developer options and user delight.  Think in terms of a company who wants to offer a monthly magazine or weekly newsletter but don't want to charge a flat-rate off the top.  As detailed by Google, developers can set a price and billing interval for customers and Google Play will take it from there.

While making it easy for developers to offer a great purchasing experience, our subscriptions are also designed for flexibility. Developers can use them to monetize premium dynamic content such as journals and magazines, but they can also use them to sell access to bundled products, game levels, music and video content, value-added services, or any other digital content.

As most of you know, there have been rumors swirling that there could be as many as five companies working on Nexus smartphones for later in the year.  Given that the last two have belonged to Samsung, we've been wondering who might be involved this time around.

Of course there are the bigger players like HTC, Motorola, Sony, and LG who could step in with a Pure Nexus device.  On the other hand, we've seen increasing noise out of other outfits such as Huawei, Pantech, ZTE, and ASUS.  The landscape is constantly shifting and evolving and today's second-tier players could soon wedge their way into the upper echelon.  With so much choice in the Android space, chances are good that you might be considering multiple brands for your next smartphone.

With all of this in mind, we're curious to see how loyal you are to the company that made the phone in your pocket or purse.  Are you going to buy another one from said handset maker or have you had enough?  Would you consider another brand for your next Android?

Documents found on the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) web site indicate that Huawei will soon have a second MyTouch Android handset soon for T-Mobile.  The FCC docs refer to a Huawei U8730 model known as the Ascend G 312 Qwerty which has, naturally, a QWERTY keyboard.  The device label suggests the name of T-Mobile myTouch Q, which sounds like a final product name that the carrier would come up.  We'll share more details with this handset as we gather them.

We've certainly warmed to the possibility of picking a Huawei for our next Android, have you?

New details stemming from DigiTimes indicate that the much-ballyhooed Google Nexus tablet will ship in June with an initial volume of 600,000 units per month.  Expected to be co-designed and developed by ASUS, the tablet may take the stage at Google IO on June 27th.

Reports suggest that Google is anticipating somewhere between 2 million and 2.5 million of the Wi-Fi units in 2012.  Rumors had originally tapped the tablet with a May launch however Google pushed things back a bit because the design didn't meet expectations and/or the price would be too high.  It's anticipated that the presumed Nexus tablet would have a quad-core  Tegra 3 processor and that it could cost as low as $199 when it retails.

Google just dropped a brand new, completely redesigned Google+ application into the Google Play and boy is it sharp.  Not only does it look gorgeous and more streamlined, but it's got a bunch of new features under the hood.  For starters, it's now possible to start a hangout while on the go, edit your posts inline, and download photos from Messenger conversations or posts.  If you've not jumped on the Google+ bandwagon yet then you'd be silly not to do so with this release.

A hot new rumor just hit the internet which suggests we'll be celebrating Android's fifth birthday in a major way this November.  According to a trusted TalkAndroid source, we'll be getting five Pure Android/Nexus devices come November 5th.  It's not clear whether this means an announcement or actual release however we wouldn't care either way.  We're all for multiple hardware makers getting involved with the Nexus project and this new rumor does little to temper our enthusiasm.

While we must maintain that this is nowhere near confirmed we can't help but wonder which five we might see.  We'd love to hear from you guys on this one.  If you could pick the top five Android companies for a Nexus device, what would they be?  Sound off in the comments below.

AT&T today announced a new Android smartphone for their prepaid GoPhone service, listing it with an early June release.  Called the Samsung Galaxy Appeal, it's the carrier's first slide sliding QWERTY Android for their non-contract customers. Well, that is if you somehow discount the Pantech Crossover.  Moving on...

Specifications are decent for a prepaid handset and include an 800MHz Snapdragon S1 CPU, 512MB RAM, 3.2-inch HVGA display, and 3-megapixel camera. Pricing hasn't been determined yet however we hope it might fall under the $200-$250 price range that most of the GoPhone smartphones run today.  Walmart will be the first retailer to offer the Galaxy Appeal come June 5th with wider availability expected on July 15th.

Here's a bit of a bummer for those of you who picked up an HTC EVO View 4G (Sprint) or HTC Jetstream (AT&T)  tablet over the last few months.  These two, along with the HTC Flyer, will not be seeing an official Android 4.0 update from the manufacturer.  Considering we've not run into more than a couple folks who actually own one of these three we suspect that this doesn't affect too many of you.  Nevertheless, you'll have to go with some rooting and modding if you want to load Ice Cream Sandwich on your device.

Although HTC won't bring Android 4.0 to the trio, it's not to say they won't keep supporting them with updates.  Should you have one of these tablets, you'll find your Honeycomb experience may get better with time.

Upgrades are not the same thing as ongoing support. Devices not being upgraded to Android 4.0 will still get software improvements, security fixes, and technical support as needed. - HTC

For those that had their eye on the new Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet that Samsung announced a bit ago, here's some news to bring some more appeal. When the device was first brought to light, there was a bit of confusion as to why Samsung was releasing two nearly identical tablets with the Galaxy Note 10.1 and the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1. The answer seems to be that the situation was a temporary one, with new spec information upgrading the Galaxy Note 10.1 to a quad-core processor and leaving the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 as a more value-centric device. Some more happy news (and some that was to be expected) is that Samsung has also incorporated a built-in holster for the S-Pen in the revamped housing of the Note tablet. While it was announced that integration with the specialized stylus would be a feature of the Galaxy Note 10.1, a dedicated place to stick the S-Pen when not in use is always a plus. That thing can't be cheap to replace if you lose it, after all.

GameFly today announced that they will be getting deeper into the Android space and soon begin publishing games for Android devices.  Developers who are working on that next big game but have trouble getting over financial hurdles may look to GameFly for funds to publish, promote, and sell their title.  The first apps to take advantage of the service are expected to arrive this summer.

Sprint recently took to their forum to announce that they've stopped offering the 5GB/$29.99 Mobile Hotspot plan.  Effectively last Friday (May 18) the carrier began offering two new options in its place.   On one end you have 2GB for $19.99/month and 6GB/$49.99 on the other end.  Those of you who already have the 5GB optioncan continue on as normal as Sprint will grandfather its customers rate plan.

A word of caution from Sprint is that you'll want to shut off the Mobile Hotspot when not in use.  Any data (phone calls, texts, etc.) used while the Mobile Hotspot is active will count against your alloted data bucket.  And for those of you who only need to use this feature once every few months or so, Sprint will allow users to add/remove Mobile Hotspot on an as-needed basis, leaving your contract alone.

U.S. Cellular today announced a customized app menu for the Amazon Appstore on their Android-powered devices, becoming the first carrier to offer such a service.  The menu is essentially a portal to apps and games that have ban curated by U.S. Cellular and will encompass a number of categories.

The Amazon Appstore is one of multiple Android apps that U.S. Cellular preloads onto devices and can be regularly found with others such as Kindle for Android, Amazon Mobile, IMDb Movies & TV, Audible for Android, Zappos and Amazon MP3. The new list of apps will be updated on a regular basis and can be found on most of the carrier's Android lineup.

Google's $12.5 billion acquisition of Motorola Mobility has been officially cleared and completed, according to a post on Google's blog today.  Google CEO Larry Page tells us that the nine-month process has wrapped and that Motorola Mobility CEO Sanjay Jha has resigned his post.  In his place will be Google's own Dennis Woodside as he looks to take things into the future of smartphones and mobile tech.

Larry Page's comments indicate that we might not want to look for immediate results or set high expectations this early in the game.  The bigger picture stuff is where this new company is focused, with loftier, all-encompassing long-term goals.

It’s a well known fact that people tend to overestimate the impact technology will have in the short term, but underestimate its significance in the longer term. Amazon has pushed out a new update for their Android Appstore application which adds a pretty handy feature.  Available in version 2.6.53 is the Test Drive option which allows users to instantly try applications and games without downloading them first.  This is the same stuff that some of you have have found on the web/PC version of the Amazon Appstore. Initially a beta feature, this is only offered in a select number of Android devices and for a limited collection of apps.  Additional features for the new release include a bug fix for 3G/4G downloads and stability enhancements.

If you have not had a chance to download the Amazon Appstore for your Android device, we definitely encourage you to do so.  Not only do you get free access to one paid application each day, it's also a great place for key developers to debut new titles.

Verizon today announced that four of their 4G LTE Android smartphones will soon see software updates which enable world roaming. Expected "this summer", the update will allow users to take their handset to more than 200 countries and use phone (220) and data (205) capabilities.  The smartphones expected to pick up the software include three Motorola models and one HTC model.

This summer, Verizon Wireless will be updating the following 4G LTE smartphones for global use.
HTC Rezound
DROID RAZR by Motorola
DROID RAZR MAXX by Motorola
DROID 4 by Motorola

Customers will see a notification on their device when the software update is available for their device. After the software update, customers will be able to take their smartphone overseas and use voice service in more than 220 countries and receive data in more than 205 countries.

The slight delay is over and the HTC EVO 4G LTE is back on track for its Sprint launch. Word hitting the internet just now is that delivery is expected at Sprint warehouses on May 24th and that pre-order cancellations will have been suspended by the time you read this. According to Inside Sprint Now (managed by a customer service division rep), the Android 4.0 handset has been cleared at the border. Less than a week delay is not so bad, huh?

Don't look for T-Mobile USA to jump on the coming bandwagon that is shared data plans any time soon. Speaking in a blog post late last week, T-Mobiles Andrew Sherrard (Senior Vice President of Marketing) indicated that the "one size fits all" model is not what consumers truly want. What's more, he and the carrier believe that these new plans will be potentially confusing and expensive to mobile subscribers.

Both Verizon and AT&T have indicated that they will be announcing shared data plans later this summer however Sprint hasn't made any noise. Considering they are the only carrier to offer an unlimited rate plan with unlimited data they may be the last to do anything on this front. Presumably these shared options will be appealing to those with multiple members of a family who need a bucket of data. Further, they should also speak to those of you who have multiple devices such as a smartphone and tablet.

T-Mobile believes they have the right plan of action with their data options, including the recently announced no-contract plans that range between $15-$50 per month. And even while they throttle the speeds down to a crawl, there's no worry of overage fees for the user who accidentally goes over the allotted data. Finally, T-Mobile reminds us that their 5GB and 10GB plans include the Smartphone Mobile Hotspot which lets user share 4G data with up to five Wi-Fi enabled devices.

Sony has confirmed that all versions of their tablet line will see Android 4.0 updates before the month is finished.  Speaking with CNET recently,  and confirmed via Twitter, Sony advised that all Sony Tablet S and Tablet P devices will have Ice Cream Sandwich by May 31, regardless of market or region.

While the company might only offer two models at this time, it's a good sign that the company wants to stay relevant.  Early Sony efforts such as the Xperia X10 were great pieces of hardware however they were left in the dust as they struggled to push out timely updates.

Among the features that come with the Android 4.0 update are panoramic camera mode, browser enhancements, and an updated gallery viewer with SD card access.

Boost Mobile is set to launch its Visual Voicemail platform next week, starting with the HTC Evo Design 4G.  Set to begin May 31, the service lets users manage voicemail in a manner similar to email and allow scrolling, replying, forwarding, and more.

Should you, dear Boost Mobile user, often find yourself in a theater, school, or noisy environment, you might enjoy the Voicemail-to-Text transcription option. With this premium option ($1.99/mo) you can ready your voicemails instead of listening to them.  No word yet on how Visual Voicemail will be rolled out to additional models.
