Let’s just say it’s yet another zinger that points out the fact that apps aren’t everything.

The commercial is definitely not based around Android or any specific handsets. The Droid Eris and HTC Imagio take a backseat to the zinger. Still, it’s a comforting feeling to see another Android device on television.

OpenTable’s application comes in Android, iPhone, Palm and BlackBerry flavors and allows diners to find and book reservations at more than 11,000 different restaurants around the world. Using the app, diners can view a list of open tables at nearby restaurants and even make reservations right from their phones.

This is an important milestone for OpenTable because we are now seeing mobile reservations translate into meaningful revenue for our restaurant partners. Because our mobile apps interact directly with the OpenTable Electronic Reservation Book at the restaurant’s host stand, we are uniquely positioned to provide smartphone users with the ability to find and book real-time reservations and the confidence that the restaurant will be expecting them when they arrive. - Jeff Jordan, CEO of OpenTable.

If you’re interested in picking up OpenTable, you can find it for free in the Android Market.

Categories include:

Education/Reference

Games: Casual/Puzzle

Games: Arcade/Action

Social Networking

Lifestyle

Productivity/Tools

Media

Entertainment

Travel

Misc

For this final round, Android users (you!) and a panel of judges from the industry will both help narrow the results down. Voting will be open until enough votes are received for each application to fit into whatever algorithm they’re using. The previous ADC saw judges from all 34 founding members of the Open Handset Alliance so we’re assuming a similar system will be in place this time.

For the big list of all 200 apps that made the cut, you can head to the Android Developers Blog. Which of these did you get a chance to play with? Any favorites or front runners?

Gone, gone are the honeymoon days when I had this wonderful love affair with my brand shiny new MyTouch. The bride turned out to be a little bit too old, not very smart and missing some very important qualities.

To my own horror I found myself lurking in the dark corners of the blogosphere, catching glimpses of new sexy things to come, enviously reading about all of the glamorous and exciting things they will do for their lucky masters. Fast, slick, young…

No, I definitely have cheated, there’s the only one way out – dump your old beau and get this seductress who will softly whisper in my ear “Drooooiiiiiid“. Hmmm… Tempting!

But on the second thought, it will probably cost me an arm and a half of a leg to bail out of the contract and switch carriers. Besides that, big T will probably start rolling “Eclairs” within a month so my already trusted phone will get just as smart. I do enjoy the fact that I can have a family plan and unlimited net and still pay under $100/month. I’m not missing things like physical keyboard (I’m a programmer, I’m practically attached to the computer) and I like the shape, the weight and the fact that I can put it in the pocket and forget that I even have the phone. Plus, even the newest of phones will grow old at some point too.

But there is a silver lining! After all, time is on my side©. I can’t even imagine what sort of a beast is awaiting me on the other end of my 2 year contract. What do you think is waiting for us over the rainbow?
Google is obviously fully part of the big Droid launch marketing today, giving it a coveted link on the Google.com homepage.

The “learn more” link leads to a page on Google headed “Search on Droid by Motorola.” The page includes photos of the Droid, a bit of text highlighting voice search, the quick search box and Google’s new turn-by-turn navigation. There’s also a blue box with a couple of links off to Verizon.

These blue-box links might be slightly controversial to some; those of us familiar with these kinds of pages on Google expect those links to lead to other Google.com pages. I found it a bit jarring when I saw that I was heading to the dark, dark land of Verizon.

Edit: I forgot to mention Bert and Ernie. Details are hazy, but apparently Bert and Ernie are either fans or paid endorsers of the Droid. (The previous sentence is not true.)

The buzz around Android is undeniable. With Motorola, Verizon, Samsung, LG and other major players taking a significant bet, it is essential for Polar to extend our SMART Platform to support Android devices for our customers. The application market is heating up and we get that media brands need help getting their content out across multiple platforms. – Kunal Gupta, CEO of Polar Mobile.

After being nominated for a Webby Award on BlackBerry, Polar Mobile promises many more Android applications. If you want to grab TheStreet.com, you can get it for free in the Android Market or at m.thestreet.com today!

The (grainy) video below gives us a few minutes of how everything works. It appears Samsung has done a great job balancing TouchWiz with Android, not going too far in either direction.

We were all anxious for Cupcake, Donut and now for Eclair. Admit it, you waited by your phone anxiously anticipating the moment it informed you of the availability of a new system update. Some changes come under the radar however. New and improved mobile search is one such stealth improvement you might have missed.

Google Search Options have existed on your desktop for most of 2009. These options allow you to filter your searches based on results (blogs, news, videos, etc.) and time (24 hours, week, year, etc.). Google announced recently that the same helpful filtering options are now available to mobile users.

Let’s say you want to buy Beatles Rockband for the Wii. You can Google that and get lots of information. Too much information most likely. Google Search Options to the rescue! Click Options then Reviews from within your results window and you get only others’ opinions about your intended purchase. Want more? Click Options and Past 24 Hours and you get only the latest and greatest information regarding reviews. All done? Click Options and Reset Options to clear the filter settings. Very cool.

Now that might not have been the best example because we know you were going to buy Beatles Rockband anyway, right? Hopefully it served to introduce this new feature that once you start using you may find yourself relying on more and more. I do.
Users have the full Zagat Ratings for food, service, decor, and down-to-the-dollar cost estimates! Naturally, the app also offers the official Zagat review for each restaurant, bar, hotel, etc. Built to use GPS-location awareness, users will always have Zagat-Rated restaurant recommendations at arm’s length.
Want to filter your search? Advanced Search can narrow results down by scale, cost, and more. This means you can specifically select a restaurant that’s a 20+ on food scale, costs less than 50 dollars, is child-friendly, in midtown, and serves Italian food. Yup! Precise, isn’t it?

Worm holes, space craft, and even ridiculously modded DeLoreans have served as fodder for our quest to control our relationship to the relentless plodding of time. Fortunately, for (all of) mankind, a little personal electronics company called Sony introduced what may have been the first legitimate time control consumer device a few decades back. It was known mysteriously as, “BetaMax”.

While Sony’s initial foray into the VCR (that’s video cassette recorder to those new among us) market did not achieve the worldwide domination they surely expected, it did finally allow people to be (virtually) in two places at one time. Fast-forward to a time when enterprise data solutions are smaller than that pioneering BetaMax cassette, and you have the dawn of Android.

Recognizing that other smartphone platforms MAY exist outside of the Androidosphere, what we are talking about today is the potential Android applications have to make our lives better. Let’s start with scholars’ estimates that average Americans (and presumably lots of other world citizens) spend between three and five years of their lives waiting in some sort of line. Taking the more conservative estimate to mean 26,280 hours per person, that is a LOT of time.

So, what might you do with your time if you had a computer, internet connection, and virtually unlimited access to computer applications (i.e. Android handset), while you were standing in line ? Well, I’ve seen writers estimate that the first draft of a novel is achievable within three months. Think how much more quickly you could create the invitation list for a birthday party, or, SuperBowl Bash. Heck, with Android 2.0’s recently announced Microsoft Exchange support, you could probably make a habit of planning your next day’s schedule while waiting in the supermarket checkout line.

And, as fun as that sounds, the real point here is for developers and Androiders alike to harness the tremendous opportunities inherent in such a “time traveling” device. Developers have a responsibility to at least consider how their applications might be used to reclaim the numerous fragments of our lives that were previously considered “wasted.” And, Android owners owe it to themselves to discover how the mundane everyday tasks of life might be squeezed to free up time for more enjoyable pursuits. As a developer, and as an Android user, I’m doing both. What say you ?
True, it lacks the latest version of Android (2.0); they also seem to have left out multi-touch browsing. But, the fact of the matter is, those things are all fixable via software updates. Plus, I’m sure they’re already hard at work on implement Android 2.0 with their super slick, outta control, Rachael UI.

So, aside from the software issues, which can be corrected, why can’t other phones be like the Xperia X10? Why is it so hard for a company to put out a quality piece of hardware? I just don’t get it! I understand it costs more money, but we see that phone companies are already charging customers a fortune for high end phones.

Let’s use our brains for second (I know I’m asking a lot)… Who in tarnations wants to pay $349.99 (after mail-in rebate) for an HTC Touch Pro2 running WinMo 6.1? Yeah, it’s a nice looking phone, but that’s pretty much it. The processor is awful (528MHz ARM11), it’s as glitchy as an 8086 running Windows Vista, and it’s fatter than Chris Farley in the movie Tommy Boy. Why not sell a high-end Android phone instead, or at least along-side it? Do phone makers think there’s no market for it?

Sony Ericsson has had the X10 in the pipes for a while now. We’ve been hearing rumors about it and seeing pictures of its interface for months. The company saw the phones that other manufacturers had in the pipes and realized that by the time those hit the market something more powerful would already be needed. Sony Ericsson took the initiative to think ahead of the competition. Instead of being first to the finish, they decided to make the best possible device they could. They customized the interface, they gave it an insanely awesome 8.1 MP camera, and they made sure it would be released with the latest and greatest processor on the market.

The X10 is the phone that the Android community wants. Yet, no other company has released an Android phone that can rival it. I find this extremely sad considering the amount of time manufacturers have had to come up with their lines of Android based devices.

I beg phone makers to step up their game. No one wants to buy a phone that won’t be able to handle the next major version of Android. Android is all about the infinite customizability (wow, that’s an awesome word) and rapid development of an open, mobile, platform. Why is it that Sony Ericsson is the only company that seems to get this?

The X10 is the fastest, hottest, and most feature packed smartphone to date. Sony Ericsson was patient. Hopefully it’ll pay off. They say you learn from experience. Whoever “they” are, never said the experience had to be your own. The X10 is proof of that. Way to learn from the errors of your competition!

Let the hardware wars begin…

I wrote about this application in an earlier article touting its simplicity. Daniel Velazco has done a great job maintaining that simplicity and ease of use while adding functionality. Version 3.0 continues to provide the basics fans of Bedside are accustomed to like a dimmed screen, sound muting and control over color and font while adding several useful features. In the new version the basics are enhanced with greater control over color, text and background, as well as font–five options now compared to only three earlier. This is a new version of Bedside, however, not just a maintenance upgrade with a few modifications; new bells and whistles are plentiful.

Scheduled screen brightness allows you to change the brightness level based on time. If you want your phone to light up bright at 6am as an extra “nudge” to get you out of bed, set it and forget it. For those mornings when you are too tired to open your eyes but you still need to know the time just long press Bedside 3.0 and a voice you configure tells you the time. You can configure speech rate, pitch and language so if you want to be told the current time super fast but in a super slow German pitch, Bedside can do it! Customizable shortcuts now appear on the screen that allow you to configure your favorite music player, alarm, screen brightness and an additional shortcut for whatever else you want one-click access to in the morning. The screen brightness shortcut can be configured to function as a flashlight. I found this feature most helpful! One click and my phone lit up providing more than enough light to help me easily find the power cord to plug in at night or work my way downstairs for a midnight snack without stubbing my toes. I configured the additional shortcut for the Greed application so I was always one-click away from news, flashlight, music and an alarm.

Of course, not receiving notifications throughout the night may insure a restful sleep but it may mean you miss an important SMS message. While Bedside 3.0 continues to allow phone calls, it does, by default, block SMS messages. Unlike earlier versions however 3.0 allows you to disable that default and be notified when you receive a 3am text. The configuration comes complete with a whitelist allowing you to control which contact’s text you want to be notified of overnight and which ones you would just as soon ignore and read in the morning; genius. The list of enhancements and additions doesn’t stop there. Battery status, control over day and weekday formats, 12/24 hour format, auto-start, auto-end and more are all in Bedside 3.0.

Bedside 3.0 will be available for download tomorrow November 6th for $1.49. If you already have the application the download is free. The developer is committed to this application and is very responsive to support issues. You have a cold and want a good night’s sleep, take Nyquil. If all you need is a good nights sleep: download Bedside 3.0, the nighttime, light dimming, sound stopping, music playing, flashlight providing, alarm linking, customizable, amazingly supported must have on your nightstand so you can rest Android application!

This App Was Tested Using: G1/Dream on Android 1.6

Presentation: Simple to use app with no frills but lots of simple to use and configure features.

Value: Price is right. Nothing else that I have seen compares to it. The first (and so far only) app I have purchased!

Stability/Resources: No hanging, no sluggishness, no issues of note.

Bottom Line or “AG Says” - Bedside 3.0 improves on earlier versions without sacrificing quality or performance. This is an app worth purchasing.

Slacker provides a nearly unlimited number of custom stations including over 100 expert-programmed channels, seasonal, and spotlight stations! On top of all that, they already offer stations to over 10,000 artists. One of Slacker’s features is that it gives listeners artist biographies, album reviews, station fine tuning, “peek ahead” song previews and song lyrics. Similar to other personalized radio stations, Slacker listeners can favorite songs. Unlike most though, users can also ban songs and artists. This helps create that perfect radio station where every song elicits an “I LOVE THIS SONG!”.

The flexibility of Android allows the app to run in the background so users can go about their other business. Oh yeah, they also have a neat little widget on the desktop so you can control your station too.

You may recall that judging for the first round began in late September, and finished up on October 6. Since then, it’s been stony silence, leading to speculation that the whole thing had been scrapped. Complicating matters, T-Mobile rolled out Android 1.6 right in the middle of first round judging, causing issues with users trying to evaluate ADC2 candidates written for 1.5 (per the contests requirements).

But with results from the first round going out by email today, one can assume that the 2nd round will start soon. In round 2, the ADC2 app should become active again, allowing users to score the top 20 apps in each category from round 1. These scores will be combined with those of a panel of expert judges to determine the winners.

Here’s the email being sent out to semi-finalists. By the way, congratulations to ChickenBrick Studios for Project I.N.F. making it through to round two!

Congratulations! Your application ‘ProjectINF ADC’ was selected by Android users as one of the top 20 in the Arcade category! We’re excited that you chose to participate in the ADC 2 and wish you luck in the final round as your application is evaluated by users and a panel of judges.

For full information on the challenge, please see our official site: http://code.google.com/android/adc/

Thanks,
ADC 2 Support

Update: The ADC 2 judging app has been updated and round 2 apps are being delivered for evaluation. Congrats and good luck to all those who made it to round 2!
Normally, this would be a bigger story, but Verizon’s decided to play it cool with ERIS hype and devote everything to DROID.

DROID ERIS is nearly identical to Sprint’s Hero, also made by HTC. The biggest and most obvious difference being that Verizon’s offering their handset at roughly half the price. Both give customer the ability to customize seven panels of the desktop screen with apps and widgets designed by Google and HTC. As part of Sense, customer can also set up different home screens to reflect on the various needs throughout the day. Preloaded “Scenes” include Home, Work, and Play with a potentially unlimited number of ways to customize them. Final specifications include:

3.2″ capacitive touch screen

Trackball interface

5.0 megapixel camera w/ auto-focus

8 GB microSD expandable to 16GB

Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and 3.5 mm headset connectivity

GPS, digital compass

Android 1.5/HTC Sense

DROID ERIS will be available in Verizon Stores and online at www.verizonwireless.com on starting tomorrow, Nov. 6, for $99.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate (debit card) with a new two-year customer agreement on a voice plan that includes an e-mail feature or e-mail plan.

According to an FCC filing, the next Android device for Verizon may be the Saygus (who?) VPhone V1. While this has yet to be confirmed, the evidence is pretty convincing. Saygus’ own web site talks about a third Android device coming to Verizon (link – Unstrung News Analysis).

Apparently the device doesn’t have a 3.5mm headphone jack, though peripherals can be connected via its mini USB port [yawn]. From the available pictures, I find this phone to be a tad on the ugly side. I’m sure the final build will be nice though. After all, it has to live up to Verizon’s standards, doesn’t it? [sarcasm]

Here are the known specs…

Slide out keyboard

3.5″ 800×480 capacitive touchscreen

634MHZ Marvell PXA310 processor

5MP autofocus camera

512MB ROM and 256MB RAM

MicroSD slot

WiFi

Bluetooth

GPS

Accelerometer

Digital compass

FM radio

Front facing camera (for video calls?)

The one thing that excites me about this phone is the front facing camera. I’ve always said that implementing video chat has to be a priority for phone makers. I guess it may soon be a reality.

The latest Samsung handset find itself sneaking onto the internet is/was the i6500 “Saturn”. On Monday, there was literally nothing to share aside from the fact that it had 802.11b/g WiFi capability. Exciting, right? Tonight, we’ve got a few more details to pass along. From the sounds of it, this one will be similar to the Spica and Galaxy, but could boast the 800MHz chip common in recent models. According to GSM Arena, the Saturn could/should be running Android 2.0 when it arrives in 2010. Makes sense to us.

Here are a couple of unofficial and tentative specs compiled so far:

3.2″ 320×480 screen

Android 1.5

GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900

3.5 mm headphone jack

microSD slot

Again, nothing has been announced yet and everything we’re looking at is being put together and/or assumed based off of current Samsung trends.

What does BGR’s tipster say about the phone? “…the phone is thinner and lighter than the Sprint HTC Hero, feels much better in the hand, and is generally the best Android device besides the Motorola DROID our connect has used.”

That’s all we needed to hear!
