Winners in all categories will be based exclusively on the opinions and the votes of VIEWERS! Voting ends December 14 with finalists announced thereafter.

In addition to these five categories, Sportsman Channel has added four new award categories designed to celebrate the exciting video imagery shown on the channel every day:

In the last 4 days, we have added new cities, Troy Alabama, Aberdeen Washington, Little Rock Arkansas, a commitment from Huntsville Alabama as soon as the station goes live on the air, and two other cities that I simply can not mention just yet but it’s ALL good! Henry Repeating Arms .22 Survival Rifle

USCCA - -(AmmoLand.com)- Maybe you own a cool AR-15 variant based on Eugene Stoner’s original design. Stoner also had his fingers in another design, that of the AR-7. Henry Repeating Arms owns the rights to make this neat little survival rifle that started out at Armalite just like the AR-15 did.

This little gem of a rifle breaks down into components that fit neatly inside compartments built into the buttstock. It comes with two 8 round magazines and is the perfect backpack rifle for those who just want to have something to harvest small game in an emergency situation.

No it’s not a bear gun, but it will make it much easier for an injured or lost person in the woods to be able to harvest an emergency food source. It may even deter some bigger animals that are getting too nosey about you being lost and/or injured in the woods. And for packing a gun in a Bug Out Bag, this one won’t take up much space or add much weight. (Always remember to securely stow Bug Out Bags that contain firearms).

Another plus for this little rifle is that it is just plain fun! It’s cool for the youngsters, and it fits them too. It can be stowed just about anywhere, and when properly broken down it is waterproof. Henry Repeating Arms makes them in black (as shown here), silver, and camouflage.

The AR-7 saw military service as a pilot or crew survival rifle from about 1959 til now. It has been made by different manufacturers who each had their own ideas for some subtle changes. Though it could be used as a last resort firearm for defensive purposes, the .22 Long Rifle caliber is much more suited for harvesting small game. That’s not to say that the caliber is incapable of killing a human being. Far from it actually. My dad used to slaughter 1500-pound bulls with a shot behind the ear from a pistol chambered in .22 Long Rifle. Yes, he had the muzzle right up to the skull with the little .22 Long Rifle revolver, but it worked just fine.

At two and one half pounds, this version of a survival rifle can be packed pretty much under any parameters of gear weight and space requirements for outdoor adventures. Being that the rifle breaks down into parts that can be stowed in the waterproof buttstock, there isn’t a problem of trying to locate individual components when needing to put the gun together in a hurry. Everything is in the buttstock. No separate, uncased components when the gun is broken done as may be the case with other rifles of this class.

The only thing that could possibly be lost is the bolt handle that could possibly fall out before the rifle is put together. Once the barrel is screwed into the receiver, the bolt handle cannot fall out. Without the barrel in place, the bolt can move far enough forward that the small bolt handle could slip out. Even if it did, a round could be chambered with an improvised handle if, by chance, the bolt handle did fall out and was lost. Not a big deal at all, and just confirmation that we all need to have training and experience with every tool that we may have to use. And training begins with an owner’s manual and some practice.

I liked the black buttstock version of the Henry Survival rifle. All of the other components were black coated Teflon with the magazines finished in what appears to be bluing that is a deep black color. The camo may be great for the woods in the northeast where I live, and the silver may be good for its higher visibility under other circumstances. But I like the black one that doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb under many more circumstances and scenarios whereas the silver or camo versions might. Owner’s choice though, and we have three of them.

The magazines are easy to load, and they can be stowed loaded in the buttstock. The barrel and receiver are Teflon coated, giving them a nice dull black finish. Overall the gun is 35 inches long when put together, and only 16 1/2 inches broken down with parts stowed in the ABS buttstock.

The three main parts were put together in a flash and very easily without the need of any tools other than a human hand. Pop the flexible buttstock pad off of the back, pull out the receiver and barrel, screw the receiver into the front of the buttstock with the wing nut that cannot fall out, push the barrel into place, screw the barrel nut down tight, and it is ready to go.

The barrel is steel covered in Teflon coated ABS. This keeps the overall weight manageable, and is appropriate to the intended use of this firearm. Don’t think that the barrel is a liability in the least for it is capable of handling tens of thousands of rounds over the life of the weapon. The front sight on the barrel is a blade sight.

With both the barrel and the receiver being Teflon coated, the little Survival Rifle is incredibly weather resistant. Clean and oil this rifle properly, and there won’t be a worry about any rusting of the components while they are stowed in the buttstock. And the Teflon is great to keep the gun working flawlessly under survival conditions when it is put together for use.

With a range of 100 meters (109.36 yards) and the intended purpose of the rifle, the rib to mount a scope on the top of the receiver (as shown above) may not be used much. However it is there for the real enthusiast of this little rifle who wants to use it more for fun than survival. I suppose that if there is any problem with this rifle, it is that it will be left put together and shot at every opportunity instead of being put away in a Bug Out Bag. That’s okay. They aren’t that expensive so buy two of them. At a manufacturers suggested price (MSRP) of $245.00 for black or silver, and $310.00 for camo, this means that they should be found for quite a bit less in the better gun stores. I’ve found that some MSRP’s are high as compared to the street price of many products, especially guns.

I can load standard or high velocity rounds in the Henry Survival Rifle, but I prefer Federal’s Gold Medal Target ammo. At 1250 feet per second velocity, I don’t expect any issues with the gun’s action cycling. To ensure reliability of the action, I wouldn’t choose to shoot subsonic .22’s since they just don’t have the oomph needed to reliably cycle the action.

Using Federal’s Gold Medal Target loads and Sentry Solutions lubrication products on this rifle, I don’t expect any reliability issues. That’s what we are going to find out next week when I share the results of my range time with this remake of the AR-7 by Henry Repeating Arms. From the classic Golden Boy line to the lever actions, Big Boys, or Acu-Bolt, Henry Repeating Arms has a fine line of U.S. made rifles. Not just put together in the U.S., but all of the parts are made here in America.

In fact the president of Henry Repeating Arms, Anthony Imperato, promises that, “Henry rifles will only be made in America, or they won’t be made at all.” Benjamin Tyler Henry created the design for the first decent lever-action rifle. Abe Lincoln owned one. There are even photos of him holding his Henry rifle.

Now the Henry name and legacy is in the hands of Anthony Imperato. In communication with the man, I have found him to be a man of his word. He has gone way above my expectations of any manufacturer that I approach about doing a product review. I suppose this is why the reputation of Henry Repeating Arms is held in such high esteem among their customers. Plus with their headquarters being in Bayonne, New Jersey, any of us could look him up if he gave us any trouble! Just kidding folks.

Seriously though, you can’t go wrong with owning any Henry rifle. In fact I hope that I do something worthy enough one day to have someone get me a personally engraved .30 .30. Yep, you heard right. Second Amendment March

Michigan - -(AmmoLand.com)- Things are going well with the Second Amendment March. We now have 29 State Coordinators and website traffic is holding steady at 45,000 unique visitors per week. Donations were up slightly last month but still painfully short of what we’ll need to pull this event off. I hate to beg, but even five dollars per person would be a great help in organizing efforts.

Dennis Sanford, our Field Representative, will be sending out the official letters to the gun industry next week asking for monetary and logistical support. We’re hoping that during these times of record firearm and ammo sales that the gun industry will help us out. If you have any leads on corporations or businesses (large or small) who would like to support the march, please email me at skip@secondamendmentmarch.com with all the details and I’ll follow up.

Also, I’ve recently mailed letters to Chris Cox and Wayne LaPierre of the National Rifle Association officially asking for their support. They have a lot of resources at their command and it would be great to get their help. Already, many NRA members are helping us out, but it is NRA headquarters who controls the assets we need to help publicize the march. Feel free to call or write the NRA asking that they support the Second Amendment March in some capacity. Gun Owners of America has already pledged their support to the Second Amendment March. Your Board of Directors meets every Wednesday night to discuss and organize the march. Also, your State Coordinators meet every other Thursday to share plans and concerns as they organize on a state level.

Lately we’ve been getting a lot of help from nine-twelvers and TEA party folks. This is great because they are highly motivated and organized and they’ve already done a successful march on DC. We are learning from them everyday, and we appreciate their help.

Second Amendment March Update for November 20th

Editor’s Note: This article by David Woodbury is aimed toward those who have not yet reached a point of confidence to carry concealed even though they have a permit to do so. It is better to build up one’s confidence even if one has to practice carrying a concealed mock weapon (if legally permitted in your area). No need for emails about how temporarily carrying a mock or empty weapon is useless. Never carrying at all due to lack of confidence in one’s abilities is permanently useless.

USCCA - -(AmmoLand.com)- It bears repeating: Practice handling and shooting your gun before you need to use it. But if you’re going to carry concealed, practice CARRYING before you actually do it.

Always Deciding to carry concealed presents some interesting and important mental challenges. Besides always staying in practice, so you are always as safe as you can be in a crisis, there are many more demands on you, all of them preceded by the word “always”. (And there are scores of other demands preceded by “never”, but those are the ones we hear all the time.)

• ALWAYS know where your gun is, both when it’s on your body and when it’s not.
• ALWAYS know whether it’s loaded, when it’s on your body and when it’s not.
• ALWAYS know whether it’s locked (or whether the safety is on, depending what type of hardware you’re packing).
• ALWAYS know how you can sit, stand, walk, and run so it won’t bulge or “print” on you.
• ALWAYS know how close you are to other people and whether there might be someone close by who would give you a spontaneous hug or a friendly pat in the wrong place.
• ALWAYS, always, always.

These are things — and I could add many more — that you cannot forget, even for a moment.

Permit Today, Pack Tomorrow. Yes, you can get a concealed carry permit and then immediately begin carrying when you’ve never, or seldom, done it before. But to do so requires a level of mental discipline that most of us don’t possess the moment we start. You will make mistakes if you do it that way. Start packing without the mental discipline, and you will fail the ALWAYS test above. So I’m here to offer a handful of suggestions.

A. Before you ever carry a loaded firearm, carry a single cartridge
Do it before you ever get a permit. Start with one, and see whether you can say positively that you are aware every moment where it is. Where is it while you’re in the shower? While you’re at work? While you’re at the Post Office or in church? Where is it when the clothes you just wore are in the washing machine? If you slip up and someone finds out that you have it, so what? You can explain it any number of ways, and you don’t need a permit.

Then carry six at once, or whatever number would fully reload your magazine or your cylinder. This may be more important a skill than you think, because even though the idea of carrying a lone bullet is to make you accountable for carrying a firearm later, you’ll also want to figure out how to carry extra ammo once you do start to go around armed.

(I’ve found that the little Tyvek sleeve the bank gives me for my credit card holds six round of .38 or .357 neat and flat.)

B. Carry a toy gun
In the side-street toy shops you can still buy a near-life-size plastic revolver or a squirt gun shaped like a semi-automatic. Try carrying one of these concealed for a few weeks. If it’s longer than your real gun, cut it down to match. Or, if it’s just too weird to carry plastic, cut a notch out of a bush or small tree (or carve a block of wood) to something vaguely resembling the dimensions of the gun you may one day carry, and carry the piece of wood for a few weeks first. If someone finds out you have it on you, again, you can explain it any number of ways.

If it’s not your intention to carry a concealed firearm but, say, a tactical knife for personal protection, then modify this suggestion to something vaguely resembling the size and weight of that equipment.

C. Carry an empty gun
Once you are comfortable with the feel of carrying and the discipline needed to keep it concealed and safe, there’s still a quantum mental shift from concealing a piece of harmless metal to concealing something that is instantly deadly. Carrying empty gives you the complete feel, but not the feeling. Once you start carrying for real, you’re making two monumental adjustments: You need to get past the self-conscious stage with the real hardware, and you need to reckon the gravity of the choices you can now make. Notice I didn’t say you have to do both at the same time.

To get past the self-conscious stage, carry empty but on alternate days for a week or so. Do it one day, then think it over and adjust your habits the next day. Then carry empty for a week, maybe with the ammo in a pocket somewhere.

The quantum mental shift doesn’t come with the permit. It takes weeks of training in the military. Putting on the uniform the first day doesn’t do it. It’s accepting that every day, because of the choices someone else makes, you’re ready to take a life. (And, as has been said in these pages so many other ways, if you’re not ready to take a life, then you shouldn’t be packing.)

The Consequences: Even though I’m a Registered Maine Guide, even though I’ve hunted for 40 years, even though I’m an Army veteran, even though I’ve been a security manager (unarmed), even though I have long owned firearms of several types, I didn’t make the transition instantaneously once I started packing a few years ago. I was accustomed to open carry as in hunting: slipping the safety off and on as I moved about, unloading in the open before re-entering a vehicle, and so on. When I’m armed for hunting, it’s right out in front of me where I’m acutely aware of it and open to the world at the same time. And no one where I live gives any thought to seeing someone alongside the road lugging a shotgun or rifle.

But I didn’t start out doing A, B, or C. Why? I just thought I was already so handy and safe with firearms that packing heat would be natural. And because of that assumption…

Here are a few things that happened to me once I began carrying daily:

1. I forgot that the gun was on me. I had eventually found a way to carry that was so comfortable I didn’t have the slightest discomfort to remind me it was there. The day it happened, I’m sure no one saw anything, but before I was sure I had to think about everywhere I’d been for the couple of hours that I had forgotten about it.
2. I dropped it in public. The way I carried at the time, in an unbelted holster tucked in my pants at the small of my back, it left me vulnerable to slippage when I exited a vehicle. It had shifted in a way that, even though I still felt it, I didn’t realize how loose it was. Again, no one saw.
3. I left it in a desk drawer that others had access to, loaded and ready. This was really stupid, but I had to get it off me quickly and then go meet some people in another room for a time. I should have simply continued to carry it. The one person who’d have been most likely to find it never mentioned it, and would have been fine with it even if she had found it. But I wish I’d never subjected her to the awkwardness of the possibility.
4. I forgot where it was in the house after I had gone to bed. After I dressed the next morning and went to get it, it wasn’t where I expected to find it. I scrambled mentally to remember what had interfered with my routine the night before, and then I found it.
5. While it was on me, I forgot whether it was locked. I carry a Rossi knock-off of a S&W .38 Chief’s Special. It has a neat little screw in the back of the hammer that you set or release with a custom hex key. I was carrying, but sort of remembered that I had locked it the day before when I went to bed. (It’s not the night security piece.) I sort of remembered that I had unlocked it the next morning, but in the middle of the day in question, in the company of others who I couldn’t excuse myself from for at least another hour, I wanted nothing more than to check it. On the Rossi, if you can just touch the base of the hammer with a fingertip, you can tell whether it’s locked.
6. The very first day I started carrying, my employer sent me on an overnight trip. Alone in a motel room, I debated keeping it loaded and ready. I truly wondered, in fact, whether I might be a sleepwalker in an unfamiliar setting and not know it, or whether I could otherwise harm myself or others with it while not fully awake. I unloaded it to be more certain. The mental discipline for everyone here is to be sure what kind of sleeper you are before dropping off too soundly next to a loaded gun. Are you someone who does anything at all in your sleep that you’ve not been fully aware of while you’re doing it?

These are examples of common challenges in mental discipline. But there was one thing that was probably harder to get used to than overcoming any of these six glitches. It was simply the astonishing realization at first that I was armed and potentially deadly. Not as deadly as driving distracted at 70 mph. Not as deadly as when leading people into the wilderness in November where someone in your party can decide to wander off and get lost, leaving you to find him before he freezes. But deadly if someone else chooses that I must be.

Carrying concealed, it took me a long time to get over the fact that I could drop a human being in two or three seconds, power I had never had before. If I were highly skilled in the manual martial arts I might have that feeling, but I also would have spent years getting used to it as my skills improved. When your skill is with a firearm, you’re harmless one moment, deadly the next.

If you own a gun for self-defense, practice handling and shooting before the day when someone decides for you that it will matter. But if you’re going to carry, practice carrying before the day when you decide for yourself to go about armed!

Richardson County, Nebraska --(AmmoLand.com)- Practically every deer hunter walking into Ak-Sar-Ben Aquarium this week wants to see the picture.

They’ve already heard about the buck through online hunting forums, text messages or word-of-mouth. They know it was checked in at the aquarium.

So far, no one has been disappointed, said Tony

Korth, aquarium director at Schramm Park near Gretna.

“Everybody’s saying ’state record’ right now,” Korth said Wednesday. “It’s hard to say.”

The 38-point whitetail generating the buzz was shot Saturday by a 24-year-old Texan hunting on private land in Richardson County. On Wednesday, Wes O’Brien told the Journal Star his trophy has received a preliminary score of 281.

The rack’s official score won’t be determined for 60 days. During the so-called drying period, antlers will shrink a little.

So it remains to be seen if the O’Brien buck will top a famous set of antlers from a deer killed 47 years ago in Hall County by bowhunter Del Austin of Hastings. Commonly called “Old Mossy Horns,” the Austin buck scored 279 7/8 , ranking it not only first in Nebraska, but a world record for a whitetail taken by archery.

“I don’t care if he doesn’t get any records. He’s amazing to me,” O’Brien said of his deer.

Deer Hunters Abuzz About Possible Record Nebraska Buck

Virginia - -(AmmoLand.com)- As we reported earlier Sussex County VA was to Voting On Restricting Shooting Ranges. About 25 gun owners showed up at the Sussex Board of Supervisors meeting last night.

Everyone who spoke, spoke in opposition to the proposed ordinance that would require special use permits for shooting ranges.

Many of the Board did not seem enthusiastic about the ordinance. In the end they rejected the wording defining what a pistol range was and sent the issue back to the planning commission.

We may have to go out there one more time in the future for the whole concept to be put to rest, but I think if we keep the pressure up, the proposed ordinance will be defeated.

Sussex County Va Backs Down On Shooting Range Infringement For Now

Virginia - -(AmmoLand.com)- I had a report that the Dickenson County Circuit Court Clerk, Richard W. Edwards, was not issuing temporary permits when permit approval exceeded the 45-day limit.

I called Mr. Edwards and we spent some time on the phone. He said that permits were typically taking 60 to 90 days to issue, due to the judge not signing off on them in a timely fashion. Mr. Edwards was not aware that he was supposed to issue temporary permits (which do not require approval by the judge, BTW) after 45 days.

I pointed him to the code section (18.2-308 D) and he said he would correct his procedures as soon as his deputy clerk returns from vacation in a week or so.

If you live in Dickenson County or have any gun owning friends that do, let me know permits are being issued on time and if not, if temporary permits are being issued on time.

Dickenson County Va Not Issuing Temporary Gun Permits

Mack was a cornerstone of this organization, a wonderful friend, and a patriot.

To say that he will be greatly missed is a massive understatement.

The brief was prepared by attorney Alan Gura who was also the attorney for the widely known Heller case which successfully challenged the Washington D.C. handgun ban last year.

The brief presents an excellent and compelling argument as to why the Second Amendment should be incorporated into the states. Many Second Amendment supporters will find the brief easy to read and comprehend. It has been said by some IllinoisCarry members who have read it to cause “goosebumps” in its scope, clarity, and purpose.

Oral arguments are expected to be heard early next year and perhaps a ruling by mid-year. The restoration of the Second Amendment rights of Illinois citizens will be greatly affected by the ruling in this case and we shall continue to watch future developments very closely.

Supreme Court Brief Filed In Lawsuit Against Handgun Ban

LITTLE ROCK, AR –-(AmmoLand.com)- Biologists from the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission are taking to the skies this week as part of their periodic aerial waterfowl surveys.

The AGFC is surveying Arkansas’s waterfowl habitats to size up the state’s waterfowl population for this weekend’s opening.

With all of the water in the state, duck concentrations are widely scattered.

Wetland conditions across the entire state are much better than last year. The heavy rains over the past few months kept many farmers out of the fields, AGFC waterfowl program coordinator Luke Naylor said. “Some farmers have allowed water to drain from fields and are trying to catch up on the soybean harvest, for others, crops are a lost cause. Many duck clubs have already captured water and many fields are ready for the season opener,” Naylor said.

Nearly all public areas in the state are at or above target flooding levels. As far as duck numbers are concerned, there are widely scattered reports of concentrations of ducks around the state, Naylor said. “Due to all of the water in the state, ducks have a lot of options to choose from, so we might see ducks in large concentrations in isolated areas,” he said. “They’re probably hoping from hot spot to hot spot,” he added.

Large concentrations of mallards are not being reported in the state at this time, but large numbers of mallards are being reported in South Dakota, Naylor said. “States to the north of Arkansas were flooded as part of the same weather systems that moved through here. There are still lots of flooded fields in other states that are holding ducks to the north of Arkansas,” he explained. Naylor said the additional duck habitat to the north of Arkansas may slow the migration into the state. “A minor migration may have occurred in the last few days, but there’s not a large migration entering the state as they take advantage of that habitat,” he said.

Marshall in Line to Become New Nebraska Game Commissioner

Wisconsin - -(AmmoLand.com)- Millions of hunters will take to the woods this fall in pursuit of north America’s favorite big-game animal, the white-tailed deer. Whitetails Unlimited is encouraging all hunters to be smart, and be safe during the hunting season.

“Statistically, hunting is a very safe activity,” said WTU Executive Director Pete Gerl. “However, every year there are some tragic accidents during deer season. The real tragedy is that in the vast majority of cases, accidents are preventable if everyone followed basic hunting and gun safety rules.”

If you are one of the millions of hunters who take to the woods in pursuit of white-tail deer this fall, take a few minutes to review basic safety information that will ensure that everyone enjoys the hunt safely.

Handle all firearms as if they were loaded, at all times.
Every year there are accidents where someone thought they were handling an unloaded firearm, and it fires and injures or kills someone. Always consider every firearm to be loaded, and treat it accordingly.

Watch where you point the muzzle of every firearm.
This takes diligence and awareness, but it is a skill that can be quickly developed. Always be aware of where other people are in relation to your muzzle, and let your hunting partners know if they are not being as careful as you are. It is easy to lose concentration when everyone is uncasing their guns at the back of the pickup, or when you are tired at the end of the day. Always point the muzzle in a safe direction.

Don’t rely on your firearm’s safety.
A safety is a mechanical device, and it could fail at any time. Use it religiously except when you are ready to fire, but never assume that because the safety is on, you are 100 percent safe. Unload the firearm when not in use, and leave the action open, if possible. Also, after you shoot, before you do anything else, put the safety on.

Be sure of your target, and what is in front of, and behind your target.
It is easy to get excited when you see that big buck, but first make sure that it is really a deer, and that it is safe to shoot. Make sure there are no buildings, people, or roads behind the deer that would be in danger if you miss or the bullet passes through the animal. If you are not 100 percent sure of where your hunting companions are, or if there isn’t enough light or a clear sight line to the target, pass up the shot. You will get another chance at a deer, but sending a bullet out of your barrel without being sure of your target and background is an invitation to disaster.

Take care of your firearms and ammunition, and treat them with respect.
Don’t just grab a gun and some ammo that have been stored for months as you leave the house the morning of your hunt. Spend some time to make sure your equipment is in good shape. Take it out before the hunt to check the sights or scope. Make sure the barrel is not obstructed and that the action works properly. Make sure the ammunition matches the firearm. Never horseplay with firearms, and never climb a fence, ladder, tree or tree stand, or cross difficult or slippery terrain with a loaded firearm. Also remember that you can set the example for everyone in your group, especially for younger hunters.

Be safe if you are using a tree stand.
Never climb into the stand carrying your weapon. Unload your weapon and use a line to pull your gun or bow up after you have fastened your safety harness (remember to reload after you are settled). Reverse the process when you leave the tree stand. Always unload the weapon, and always use a safety harness or belt.

Control your emotions.
After you shoot that 10-pointer, don’t turn with your loaded firearm, with the safety off, toward your friends. Don’t run to the downed animal, or chase off into someone else’s firing lane. Rehearse in your mind what safe actions will be, and always be aware of your surroundings. Show some discipline and restraint, and don’t let your emotions force you to take poor shots that may be unsafe.

Be aware of any other circumstances that may affect safety.
If the landowner tells you to stay out of an area, respect his directions. Rain, fog, snow or sleet may reduce visibility or create hazardous conditions. Use common sense, and remember that a tragic accident can be the result of taking chances.

Never mix alcohol or drugs with firearms.
The first drink of the day is the end of the hunting day, no matter what time it is. Forget the eye-opener, the flask “to keep you warm,” or the pick-me-up with lunch, and don’t tolerate drinking (or drugs) from anyone you hunt or shoot with. Alcohol and guns are a deadly combination. Before you have that beer with dinner at night, make sure all firearms are already unloaded, cleaned and cased. In addition, if you are taking any prescription or over-the-counter medications that may affect your judgment or make you drowsy, anxious, or otherwise impaired, check with your doctor or pharmacist to see if there is an alternative.

Safety does not end when you leave the woods.
Even if you are tired, cold and hungry when you get home, safety is still the first priority. Before anything else, store your firearms and ammunition in a safe place, separate from each other and out of the reach of children. Then call your friends to come see your deer, take a hot shower, and get a decent meal. You’ve earned it.

Remember that hunting is a process, not a destination. No deer is worth risking your life or someone else’s. There are friends, family, and other people in the woods with you, and a successful hunt is not really measured in points and pounds, but in fellowship and appreciation of our natural world.

Whitetails Unlimited Urges Hunters to be Smart and Safe This Season

WASHINGTON DC—-(AmmoLand.com)- The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) issued a ruling authorizing licensed manufacturers who perform a manufacturing process on firearms for another licensed manufacturer not to place their serial numbers and other required identification markings on the firearm, provided the firearm is already properly marked with a serial number and all other requirements of the ruling are met.

During the manufacturing process, many firearms manufacturers contract with other manufacturers to perform various steps in the manufacturing process. Currently the applicable regulations require that each manufacturer performing a manufacturing process on a firearm, including a frame or receiver, place its identifying markings on each firearm.

However, multiple identification markings can be confusing to law enforcement and potentially hinder effective tracing of firearms used in crimes.

Further, unique marks of identification of firearms serve several purposes:

• They are used by the federal firearms licensees to effectively track firearms inventories and maintain all records.
• They enable law enforcement to trace specific firearms used in crimes from the manufacturer or importer, to individual purchasers, and to identify particular firearms that have been lost or stolen.
• They help prove in certain criminal prosecutions that firearms used in a crime have travelled in interstate or foreign commerce.

While manufacturers may request a variance not to mark, and thus avoid placing multiple markings on firearms, ATF has determined such requests are unnecessary if certain conditions have been met.

If a manufacturer desiring not to mark firearms submits information to ATF as outlined in ATF Ruling 2009-5, and is performing a manufacturing process on firearms that have been acquired from another manufacturer and already are properly marked, no variance is required and the manufacturer may engage in the manufacturing process without placing its identifying markings on the firearms.

Rock Island Auction Company - -(AmmoLand.com)- Colt factory letter dated January 25, 1999 confirms configuration and shipment to Pacific Hardware and Steel Company, San Francisco, California on March 22, 1906, the year of the San Francisco earthquake tragedy!

The features of this Colt are as follows: Blade front sight and frame notch rear sight. Two line block letter address on top of the barrel “(BISLEY MODEL) 38 W.C.F.” on the left side of the barrel and the left side of the frame is marked with the two line, three patent dates followed by the circled Rampant Colt.

The frame and hammer are casehardened and the remaining metal surfaces are blue. Wide low hammer spur and wide trigger with characteristic “humpback” grip. Matching serial number on frame, trigger guard and backstrap and the loading gate is marked with the assembly number “2898″. The left front of the trigger guard is marked with the Colt triangle “VP” proof and the left rear is marked with the number “5″. Fitted with two piece checkered hard rubber grips with the Rampant Colt in an oval at the tops.

Complete with the original maroon hinged lid box numbered to the gun with Bisley picture label and correct factory end labels. Provenance: George S. Lewis Jr. Collection.

Condition:
Excellent. The revolver retains approximately 98% plus of the bright original high polished blue finish with some minor box wear and flaking present on the barrel, a couple of areas of minor pitting on the cylinder and toe of the backstrap, and a few minor dings and handling marks. The frame and hammer retain virtually all of the vivid original case colors.

The grips are excellent plus with only light handling marks and sharp checkering. The markings are sharp and clear. Mechanically excellent. The box is fine with the exception of a corner on the lid, pieces of the labels flaked off around the edges and edge wear on the lid.

This professional-level workshop is designed for finding and documenting the signs of rare carnivore species, not just cougars. The focus will be cougars and differentiating their sign from those sign of other species, wild and domestic. Emphasis will be placed on collecting and preserving quality evidence to document field track scene and facilitate analysis.

Dr. James C. Halfpenny, Ph.D., President of A Naturalist’s World, tracker, carnivore ecologist, educator, and writer. Wildlife Management Will Host A Cougar Training Program

OLYMPIA, WA – -(AmmoLand.com)- In an ongoing effort to recover native Puget Sound wetland species, some 500 endangered Oregon spotted frogs were released into the wild after spending the first nine months of their lives in a captive-rearing program.

Biologists from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), Woodland Park Zoo, Oregon Zoo, and the U.S. Army released the frogs this fall into Dailman Lake on the Fort Lewis Military Reservation in Pierce County in a collaborative effort to return the endangered frog to a portion of its historic habitat.

The frogs, most weighing less than two ounces, were collected as fertilized eggs last spring, and “head-started” in captivity at the zoos and the Cedar Creek Corrections Center near Olympia to improve their chance of survival once they return to the wild.

The frog release is the second in a five-year collaborative effort led by WDFW to establish a self-sustaining population on the Fort Lewis site. Approximately 600 frogs reared at Northwest Trek Wildlife Park and Oregon Zoo were released at the same location last year, 28 of which received radio transmitters for tracking.

This year, two Cedar Creek inmates raised a number of the young frogs through the Sustainable Prisons Project, a partnership between The Evergreen State College and the Washington State Department of Corrections that allows incarcerated men and women to participate in science-based conservation projects.

The Dailman Lake area was chosen for the reintroduction because it contains diverse wetlands that can sustain a frog population, said Jim Lynch, Fort Lewis wildlife biologist.

All of the frogs tracked last year during a radio-telemetry study appear to have survived predators.

“We were encouraged with these findings, but direct observation was limited because the frogs are very effective at concealing themselves,” Lynch said.

This year, to improve data collection, about a quarter of the released frogs will be equipped with a tiny microchip that can be scanned by a wand reader.

In 2010, biologists will begin looking for egg masses to determine if the frogs have established breeding populations.

The Oregon spotted frog historically ranged from southwestern British Columbia to northeastern California, but is now known only in Klicikitat and Thurston counties in Washington. Loss of habitat, predation by non-native species such as the American bullfrog, and disease have decimated its numbers, which prompted its listing as a Washington state endangered species in 1997.

“Frogs worldwide are known as sentinel species that play an important role in ecosystems,” said Marc Hayes, senior research scientist and project lead for WDFW. “When they disappear from their habitat, these ecosystems can be disrupted.”

The U.S. Department of the Interior recently awarded WDFW a grant to coordinate range-wide recovery projects for the Oregon spotted frog and associated species. A portion of the grant supports the Fort Lewis project.

“Restoring native wetland species such as the Oregon spotted frog and protecting habitat over broad areas are examples of an ecosystem approach that WDFW and its partners are taking to help restore the state’s biodiversity,” said Phil Anderson, WDFW director.

Endangered Oregon Spotted Frogs Returned To Native Habitat

OLYMPIA, WA – -(AmmoLand.com)- In a continuing effort to monitor trumpeter swans that have succumbed to lead poisoning, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) has re-established a hotline to report dead or ill swans in Whatcom, Skagit and Snohomish counties.

People can call (360) 466-4345, ext. 266, to report dead or sick swans. Callers should be prepared to leave a message including their name and phone number, and the location and condition of the swans. The hotline is available 24 hours a day through the end of March.

Some trumpeter swans in Whatcom, Skagit and Snohomish counties, and in southwestern British Columbia, die each winter from lead poisoning after ingesting lead shot in areas where they feed.

Lead shot has been banned for waterfowl hunting in Washington and British Columbia for more than a decade, but biologists believe swans are likely reaching shallow underwater areas in fields and roosts where spent lead shot is still present.

People who see sick or dead swans are advised not to handle or attempt to move the birds, said Jennifer Bohannon, WDFW wildlife biologist. WDFW and Puget Sound Energy employees, as well as volunteers from the Washington Waterfowl Association and the Trumpeter Swan Society, will pick up the birds, she said.

The collected swans also will be among the thousands of wild birds WDFW is testing for avian influenza.

Since 2001, WDFW and other agencies and organizations have been working to locate sources of toxic lead and remove it from the environment.

For the past three years, hazing crews have worked to scare swans away from Judson Lake, a source of lead poisoning on the U.S.-Canada border in Whatcom County. During that effort, the average number of lead-related swan mortalities significantly dropped to 67 a year, about 70 percent less than the previous five-year average, said Bohannon.

This year, biologists have placed bamboo poles and plastic fences in portions of the lake to keep birds from landing or swimming in areas with concentrations of lead shot. Swans that do access those areas will be hazed from the lake, said Bohannon.

This donation will expand CLEET’s armory, which did not include any AR-15 tactical rifles until now. The TR-15’s will allow CLEET to offer an Advanced Rifle course to Oklahoma’s peace officers. CLEET Director, Dr. Larry Birney noted that “By expanding the armory at CLEET to include AR-15 rifles, we will be able to provide Oklahoma’s peace officers with advanced rifle training that was previously unavailable. By expanding our training opportunities, CLEET is preparing officers for all types of situations, thus increasing the level of safety statewide.”

The TR-15 rifle is used frequently by law enforcement agencies nationwide, and as part of this donation THOR has agreed to allow communities with graduates from the CLEET Advanced Rifle course to purchase this firearm at a significantly reduced cost.

Senator Susan Paddack was one of those in attendance for the donation.

She stated, “This donation comes at a time when all state agencies are experiencing budget cuts and scaling back operations. Oklahoma is fortunate to have businesses that recognize the needs of state agencies and take steps to help them better serve our citizens.”

All those in attendance were not only impressed by the generosity of THOR/LOKI but by the superior quality of the firearms.

LOKI Weapon Systems is part of the growing firearms industry in Southeastern Oklahoma. For the past seven years, members from various organizations in southeastern Oklahoma have made the annual trek to the SHOT Show, the world largest shooting, hunting, and outdoor trade show, to attract new businesses to the area. Southeastern Oklahoma’s hunting industry is only a small portion of what makes the area an attractive location for firearms manufacturers. The gunsmith school at Murray State College provides quality employees for these manufacturers and CLEET’s training programs and East Central University’s Criminal Justice program provides access to key customers.

In addition to access to customers and trained employees, Southeastern Oklahoma provides unique opportunities to forge partnerships that allow numerous businesses to thrive.

LYONS FALLS, NY --(AmmoLand.com)- The 4th Annual Otis Invitational Golf Outing for Charity has proven that even in harsh economic times, generosity can flourish for those less fortunate.

Otis’ vendors and partners from all parts of the U.S., Otis employees, and dedicated local businesses came together recently at the Brantingham Golf Club, in Brantigham, NY to raise awareness and money for a local charity. This year, with the additional support of country music artist John Michael Montgomery Otis was able to present a check in the amount of $33,521.63 to the Community Action Angels program operated by Lewis County Opportunities.

Originally founded in 2001 in nearby Wyoming County, Community Action Angels is now used by many agencies for volunteer coordination and collection of material items to help meet the needs of low income and disadvantaged populations. Community Action Angels is a program founded on belief in the Circle of Giving philosophy. It is the conduit that brings neighbors living in poverty and families in crisis to the attention of people wanting to give back in return for blessings received.

Last year, the Community Action Angels program at Lewis County Opportunities collected and dispersed over $116,000 in monetary and material contributions. Most of the items or services delivered through this program are never found in typical grant applications.

Angel Action gives people help and hope while removing fear and degradation. When they are able, they continue the Circle of Giving by anxiously helping others as they were helped once before. Community Angel Action is meeting the needs of our friends and neighbors, and placing the seeds for the needy to become the needed. Over 569 total volunteer hours went into the preparation and planning of this event.

Sportsmen Working to Improve BLM Energy Leasing

Medford , Oregon --(AmmoLand.com)- In a case funded by the Oregon FIrearms Educational Foundation, Jane Doe Vs Medford School District, the court ruled that Oregon’s preemption statute does not protect employees from gun restrictions imposed on them by state employers.

This case, which got international attention, pitted a Medford school teacher against her employer. When it was learned that the teacher, Shirley Katz, possessed a concealed handgun license, her school and school district began a campaign of abuse and threats against her. We agreed to take her case to court.

After the Circuit Court ruled that the school could, in fact, create rules to prevent her from possessing a self-defense firearm, we appealed. The Court’s decision can be seen here.

It’s interesting that the Court continues to use and misunderstand the case of Starrett vs City of Portland, another case funded by OFEF. In their decision they state “In Starrett, the City of Portland leased Pioneer Square to a privately owned company, Entercom, which owned and operated a number of radio stations in the area. Id. at 536. Entercom leased the property in order to host a New Year’s Eve celebration. ”

This is exactly the opposite of what happened. In fact, Entercom radio did not “lease” space from the city. The city PAID Entercom radio to run a City party on City property with taxpayer money. So once again, the Courts reach a conclusion based on incorrect former conclusions.
