Adding system memory (typically referred to as RAM) is often the best way to improve a PC’s performance, since more memory means more applications are ready to run without accessing the hard drive. However, upgrading memory can be difficult and costly, and some machines have limited memory expansion capabilities, making it impossible to add RAM.

Windows Vista introduces Windows ReadyBoost, a new concept in adding memory to a system. You can use non-volatile flash memory, such as that on a universal serial bus (USB) flash drive, to improve performance without having to add additional memory “under the hood.”

The flash memory device serves as an additional memory cache—that is, memory that the computer can access much more quickly than it can access data on the hard drive. Windows ReadyBoost relies on the intelligent memory management of Windows SuperFetch and can significantly improve system responsiveness.

It’s easy to use Windows ReadyBoost. When a removable memory device such as a USB flash drive or a secure digital (SD) memory card is first inserted into a port, Windows Vista checks to see if its performance is fast enough to work with Windows ReadyBoost. If so, you are asked if you want to use this device to speed up system performance. You can choose to allocate part of a USB drive’s memory to speed up performance and use the remainder to store files.

Extra Details:

If there is one thing that can really help applications on Windows Vista run better, it’s memory. When comparing the performance of Windows XP and Windows Vista on a PC with 1 GB of main memory, Windows Vista is generally comparable to Windows XP or faster. However, we also know that in some cases, on PCs with 512 MB of main memory, applications on Windows XP may seem more responsive. Why? Mostly because the features in Windows Vista use a bit more memory to do the things that make it so cool, like indexing your data, keeping the fancier AERO UI running using the desktop window manager (DWM), etc. The less memory in your machine, the more often the OS must randomly access the disk. This slows system performs in cases where your applications just barely fit in memory on Windows XP but not quite in Windows Vista.

We redesigned the memory manager in Windows Vista so that if you give the system more memory, it uses that memory much more efficiently than previous operating systems via a technique called SuperFetch — part of Windows Vista’s intelligent heuristic memory management system. And so Windows Vista on a PC with even more than 1 GB of primary memory (say 2 GB) will generally outperform Windows XP on that same machine — especially once you have been using the machine for some time because Windows Vista learns what you do the most often and optimizes for this.

While I fully expect the generation of PCs that ship with Windows Vista to include more memory, we also know that many existing PCs have 512 MB. While memory has gotten much less expensive, many (non-geek) people I know are just not comfortable opening up their PC and installing more memory. While there are some great PC shops that will do this for you, a lot of people may not want to bother. Well with Windows ReadyBoost, if you have a flash drive (like a USB thumb drive or an SD card) you can just use this to make your computer run better with Windows Vista. You simply plug in a flash drive and Windows Vista will use Windows ReadyBoost to utilize the flash memory to improve performance.

I should be clear that while flash drives do contain memory, Windows ReadyBoost isn’t really using that memory to increase the main system RAM in your computer. Instead, ReadyBoost uses the flash drive to store information that is being used by the memory manager. If you are running a lot of applications on a system that has limited memory, Windows ReadyBoost will use the flash drive to create a copy of virtual memory that is not quite as fast as RAM, but a whole lot faster than going to the hard disk. What is very cool here is that there is nothing stored on this flash disk that isn’t also on the hard disk, so if you remove the flash drive, the memory manager sees the change and automatically goes to the hard disk. While the performance gain from ReadyBoost is gone, you don’t lose any data and there is no interruption. And because the Windows Readyboost cache on the flash drive is encrypted using AES-128, you don’t need to worry about exposing sensitive data if the flash drive is stolen or lost. Also, the memory manager compresses the pages before writing them into the cache on the flash disk, which means you’ll get more mileage from each MB.

So, if you just want your PC to run faster with Windows Vista — it’s pretty simple — connect your flash drive through any USB 2.0 socket or PCI interface and when the autoplay interface comes up, choose “Speed up my system using ReadyBoost.” You need to have at least 230 MB free on the flash drive and some flash disks are not fast enough to support Windows ReadyBoost, although you’ll be told if that’s the case.

ReadyBoost FAQ

Q: What perf do you need on your device?

A: 2.5MB/sec throughput for 4K random reads and 1.75MB/sec throughput for 512K random writes

Q: My device says 12MB/sec (or 133x or something else) on the package but windows says that it isn’t fast enough to use as a ReadyBoost device… why?

A: Two possible reasons:

The numbers measure sequential performance and we measure random. We’ve seen devices that have great sequential perf, but horrible random

The performance isn’t consistantly fast across the entire device. Some devices have 128M of lightning fast flash and the rest of the device is really slow. This is fine for some applications but not ReadyBoost.

Q: What’s the largest amount of flash that I can use for ReadyBoost?

A: You can use up to 4GB of flash for ReadyBoost (which turns out to be 8GB of cache w/ the compression)

Q: Why can’t I use more than 4GB of flash?

A: The FAT32 filesystem limits our ReadyBoost.sfcache file to 4GB

Q: What’s the smallest ReadyBoost cache that I can use

A: The smallest cache is 256MB (well, 250 after formatting). Post beta2, we may drop it another 10 MB or so.

Q: Ok… 256M-4GB is a pretty big range… any recommendations?

A: Yes. We recommend a 1:1 ratio of flash to system memory at the low end and as high as 2.5:1 flash to system memory. Higher than that and you won’t see much benefit.

Q: Isn’t this just putting the paging file onto a flash disk?

A: Not really - the file is still backed on disk. This is a cache - if the data is not found in the ReadyBoost cache, we fall back to the HDD.

Q: Aren’t Hard Disks faster than flash? My HDD has 80MB/sec throughput.

A: Hard drives are great for large sequential I/O. For those situations, ReadyBoost gets out of the way. We concentrate on improving the performance of small, random I/Os, like paging to and from disk.

Q: What happens when you remove the drive?

A: When a surprise remove event occurs and we can’t find the drive, we fall back to disk. Again, all pages on the device are backed by a page on disk. No exceptions. This isn’t a separate page file store, but rather a cache to speed up access to frequently used data.

Q: Isn’t user data on a removable device a security risk?

A: This was one of our first concerns and to mitigate this risk, we use AES-128 to encrypt everything that we write to the device.

Q: Won’t this wear out the drive?

A: Nope. We’re aware of the lifecycle issues with flash drives and are smart about how and when we do our writes to the device. Our research shows that we will get at least 10+ years out of flash devices that we support.

Q: Can use use multiple devices for EMDs?

A: Nope. We’ve limited Vista to one ReadyBoost per machine

Q: Why just one device?

A: Time and quality. Since this is the first revision of the feature, we decided to focus on making the single device exceptional, without the difficulties of managing multiple caches. We like the idea, though, and it’s under consideration for future versions.

Q: Do you support SD/CF/memory stick/MMC/etc.?

A: Mostly. In beta2, we added support for a small number of SD/CF cards on internal USB2 & PCIe busses. RC1 has a much broader support range.

Q: Why don’t you support SD on my USB2.0 external card reader?

A: We unfortunately don’t support external card readers - there were some technical hurdles that we didn’t have time to address. In general, if a card reader shows a drive without media in it (like a floppy drive or CD ROM does), we can’t use it for ReadyBoost.

Q: Will it support all USB drives, regardless of how they are ID’d to the OS (”hard disk drive” or “Device with Removable Storage”)?

A: We have no way to tell what is on the other end of a USB cable so we do some basic size checks (since no one has a 200GB flash device ) and then perform our speed tests. HDD will not, however, pass our speed tests, and there is no benefit to using a USB HDD for ReadyBoost.

Q: Can you use an mp3 player to speed up your system?

A: Not currently. MP3 players use the ‘plays for sure’ interfaces to expose themselves to Windows. We require that the device appear as a disk volume. These aren’t currently compatible.

Q: How much of a speed increase are we talking about?

A: Well, that depends. On average, a RANDOM 4K read from flash is about 10x faster than from HDD. Now, how does that translate to end-user perf? Under memory pressure and heavy disk activity, the system is much more responsive; on a 4GB machine with few applications running, the ReadyBoost effect is much less noticable.

Q: I can’t get my device to work with ReadyBoost… can I lower the perf requirements?

A: Unfortunately, no. We’ve set the perf requirements to the lowest possible throughput that still makes your system faster. If we lowered the perf requirements, then there wouldn’t be a noticeable benefit to using ReadyBoost. Remember, we’re not adding memory, we’re improving disk access.

Q: Which manufacturers support ReadyBoost?

A: Well, I hope that all of them do, eventually. Right now, we’re working with manufacturers to create a program that will allow them to identify ReadyBoost capable devices on their packaging.

The first thing you’ll notice about 2.7 is its new interface. From the top down, we’ve listened to your feedback and thought deeply about the design and the result is a WordPress that’s just plain faster. Nearly every task you do on your blog will take fewer clicks and be faster in 2.7 than it did in a previous version. (Download it now, or read on for more.)

Next you’ll begin to notice the new features subtly sprinkled through the new interface: the new dashboard that you can arrange with drag and drop to put the things most important to you on top, QuickPress, comment threading, paging, and the ability to reply to comments from your dashboard, the ability to install any plugin directly from WordPress.org with a single click, and sticky posts.

Digging in further you might notice that every screen is customizable. Let’s say you never care about author on your post listings - just click “Screen Options” and uncheck it and it’s instantly gone from the page. The same for any module on the dashboard or write screen. If your screen is narrow and the menu is taking up too much horizontal room, click the arrow to minimize it to be icon-only, and then go to the write page and drag and drop everything from the right column into the main one, so your posting area is full-screen. (For example I like hiding everything except categories, tags, and publish. I put categories and tags on the right, and publish under the post box.)

The Look (and visible features)

The first thing you will notice of course is the completely different look:

What we notice first in the above is that the buttons for Shared Folders, Live Space, MSN Today and Mobile have disappeared. The only thing familiar that’s left in the top part is the Mail button, and that one has moved to the right. So where have they gone?

This is what we see when we hover over our own DP. There they are! Well eh most of them anyway. Online files what? Yes Online files, not Shared Folders

See they did think about the sharing folders we already have on our computers too, can’t just get rid of what we already shared now can they! The new thing will be sharing your files online with Skydrive (not working yet, Page cannot be displayed).

We are also missing the tabs (really? do you use them?). Apparently they moved to the bottom even though at the moment I only see Today (MSN Butterfly) there. If you look at the picture Chris posted before you see more of them.

And what happened to the buddies in our contact list? They have been replaced with colored blocks. The colors stand for your contact’s status:

You also see this coming back in the DP rims (your contact’s and yours), they color along with status too. As you also notice the number of statuses has been reduced to 4, no more “Be right back”, “In a call” and “Out to lunch.” Online has been renamed to Available.

In addition to the changing color for the rim in appear offline the DP will also fade.

Hey, I see the brush appear there in the top corner! It’s hidden there till you hover over the header, so what is that for? We are used to it for changing our Messenger’s color scheme. Well we can still do that but there’s more! Scenes!

Changing the scene will change the look of the main screen, but it won’t change the look of the conversation screen. Why won’t it? Because your contact’s choice of scene will determine what that looks like, a few examples are shown above. In addition to the themes available you can also drag and drop your own picture in the header, this will also be seen in your contact’s conversation screen.

Just as with DP and Personal message this will be stored in the cloud if you have Messenger set to use the same display picture and personal message wherever you sign in ( Tools > Options > Sign In tab under General).

We already noticed the black transparent box when we hovered our own DP, you will see the same look come back when you hover over your contact’s name in the contact list:

In this screenshot you also see the What’s new feed. This will rotate the What’s new feed you see on Live Spaces, you will be led there if you click on the What’s New link, and also inform you when people change their DP or personal message. We also see Scott is playing a song…now that’s nothing new but what is new is that you can display both your Personal Message and Now Playing at the same time!

Here you see the header in my main screen (where contact list is) with Personal Message and Now Playing and the convo header I saw when messaging Scott earlier.

Let’s look at the Main windows some more, there are two features that were not present in Windows Live Messenger 8.5, namely:

Favorites:

Neat, now you can have the ones you speak most to at the top at all times, no more searching through the contact list. Though I use the contact search bar for that.

Groups:

Groups, isn’t that how we sort our contacts? It was, yes, but now that is called Categories. Groups is new and is to create a multiple person chat that will stay till you delete the group. Each group can hold up to 20 members.

Not everything is functional yet, everything under the Group button is grayed out (Group Website,  share Photos, Share Files, Discussions). After you created your first group the link/Category will disappear, don’t ask me why…it’s not logical at all but well eh if you want to create another group right click an existing group and choose “Create a group.” A group will look like this in your contact list:

Leaving a Group is done by right clicking on the group in the contact list and choosing “Leave this group”

You can also convert a category to a Group by right clicking on said Category and choose “Convert to group.”

I mentioned the contact search bar before, huge improvement there too: previously we had a search bar for Contacts and one to search the web, now these are integrated into one! Yay! Saves room!

But..but..wait a minute…what’s that button there in the middle? I never saw that before in 8.5, let’s investigate, it says Change contact list layout…

Now that’s way cool! We can now choose whether we want to show a DP in the contact list or just the colored block…and for both Favorites and Other! Can even vary with the size of the DP. Labeling can be done by “Display name” or “First and last name” and organizing by ”Categories” or Online status. We also see the return of what we saw so briefly some when in a previous beta: sort within categories by status! They also speak of SMS contacts, shouldn’t that be Mobile? They are grouped as Mobile anyway.

New Applications and (not directly visible) Features

Multi Point of Presence (MPOP)
You can now be signed in in different locations and receive your messages on all those locations

Alerts and Sounds
Those both got their own tab now

For all of the events you can set one of the sounds that come with it or add your own sound:

Ever wanted to let your contacts know vocally that you are online? That’s possible too, we call that Signature Sound:

Now first time “Turn on Signature sound” will be grayed out and you can’t enable it by just checking the box, don’t freak out over that (it’s confusing I know), just click the Change sound button and set a sound. You’ll see it’s enabled after you did that. Then next you can disable/enable as you normally would. Again here you can also set your own, so be creative! Getting sick and tired wondering where all those sounds come from? They’ve thought about that too, check “Mute my contacts’ Signature Sounds.”

Hold on! What about a setting a special sound for your contact instead of listening to the ones they’ve set? You can do so for sign-in sound and message sound if you right click on said contact in the contact list and choose “Choose sounds for this contact”. Here you will again have the choice of either setting one of the sounds already available or adding one of your own choice. You can set a different one for each if you want!

Photo Share
A new application is Photo Share. You start it by clicking on the Photos button in the conversation window. Next you browse to a picture you like to share and Click on Open. You will see the application load inside the conversation screen:

Scott asked a good question there and unfortunately I didn’t find how to save a shared picture either, am I overlooking or… If not there that would definitely be something to ask for before it goes final!

Note: If you try to send a screenshot with paste it will add it to Photo Share or start Photo Share instead of sending it.

How does Messenger integrate with other Windows Live Applications and Services

We already know we can open up either Hotmail or Windows Live Mail directly from Messenger but there’s more under the hood. Think about directly going to your Live Space and Skydrive (Online files), watching your friends profile or sending him/her an SMS. The search bar is powered by Live Search. And what about the new What’s New Feed, that’s also closely tied with the feed on spaces. Surely with Groups we’ll see even more integration with the web…

This is still a beta and things may or may not work (already noticed a few here) and things can still change too. I may have even forgotten or overlooked things, please let me know if I did in the comments below, thanks

Updates:

I forgot something quite visible and new :O
You can now hide the toolbar at the top, look at the arrows I’ve put a white square around.

Should you ever want to hide display pictures or hid them by accident and want to show them again, there’s an arrow to do that on the left side of the conversation window too, just hover towards there and it will appear.

Links
- Links (including mail button) now open in the default browser.
- Links in the contact list and conversation headers are clickable.

Display Pictures (Tools > Change display picture)
- You can now have an animated display picture, it will take GIF files. Thanks BV2312, I completely forgot about that one already. 
- You can create your own display picture from webcam snapshots.
- Create your own dynamic display picture with Mood tiles:

This requires a webcam. As you can see you assign an emoticon to the picture so changing it is as easy as putting in one of those emoticons in your conversation.

Wave 3 is the new release of the Windows Live Suite of programs, these beta programs are available from download.live.com. The program list includes Messenger Beta, Movie Maker Beta, Live Mail Beta, Windows Live Writer Beta, Photo Gallery Beta and others. These are packaged with a common installer, you can choose which programs you want to install from the list, if you have already have some this programs installed they will get updated.

You can get the installer from here or, Direct Download Link, open the installer it will show the list of programs, select the ones you want to install, if you select all of them the download size is around 150MB. Movie Maker is available for only Windows Vista.

Here is a list of some very creative ways which can help you make your blog popular. If not popular, at least it will give you some ideas of what to post on your blog if you are running out of topics to write about.

1. Start a controversy. Just remember not to cross the line.
2. Start a contest. Make sure to end it too.
3. Give away free goodies. People love them.
4. Write about other bloggers to interest their visitors to read your blog. Keep it positive.
5. Dress up your blog often (By dress-up I mean tweaking the design)

10. Celebrate your birthday with your visitors. Think of innovative ways for doing this.

• ASP.NET Dynamic Data, which provides a rich scaffolding framework that enables rapid data driven development without writing code, and a new addition to ASP.NET AJAX that provides support for managing browser history (back button support). • Core improvements to the CLR (common language runtime) that include better layout of .NET Framework native images, opting out of strong-name verification for fully trusted assemblies, improved application startup performance, better generated code that improves end-to-end application execution time, and opting managed code to run in ASLR (Address Space Layout Randomization) mode if supported by the operating system. Additionally, managed applications that are opened from network shares have the same behavior as native applications by running with full trust.
• Performance improvements to WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation), including a faster startup time and improved performance for Bitmap effects. Additional functionality for WPF includes better support for line of business applications, native splash screen support, DirectX pixel shader support, and the new WebBrowser control.
• ClickOnce application publishers can decide to opt out of signing and hashing as appropriate for their scenarios, developers can programmatically install ClickOnce applications that display a customized branding, and ClickOnce error dialog boxes support links to application-specific support sites on the Web.
• The Entity Framework is an evolution of the existing suite of ADO.NET data access technologies. The Entity Framework enables developers to program against relational databases in according to application-specific domain models instead of the underlying database models. For more information, see Getting Started with the Entity Framework. The Entity Framework introduces some additional features, including support for new SQL Server 2008 types, default graph serialization of Entities, and the Entity Data Source. This release of the Entity Framework supports the new date and file stream capabilities in SQL Server 2008. The graph serialization work helps developers who want to build Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) services that model full graphs as data contracts. The Entity Data Source provides a traditional data source experience for ASP.NET Web application builders who want to work with the Entity Framework.
• LINQ to SQL includes new support for the new date and file stream capabilities in SQL Server 2008.
• The ADO.NET Data Services Framework consists of a combination of patterns and libraries, which enable data to be exposed as a flexible REST (Representational State Transfer)-based data service that can be consumed by Web clients in a corporate network or across the Internet. The ADO.NET Data Services Framework makes data service creation over any data source. A conceptual view model of the underlying storage schema can easily be exposed through rich integration with the ADO.NET Entity Framework. Services created by using the ADO.NET Data Services Framework, and also compatible Windows Live (dev.live.com) services, can be easily accessed from any platform. For client applications that are running on Microsoft platforms, a set of client libraries are provided to make interaction with data services simple. For example, .NET Framework-based clients can use LINQ to query data services and a simple .NET Framework object layer to update data in the service.
• Windows Communication Foundation now makes the DataContract Serializer easier to use by providing improved interoperability support, enhancing the debugging experience in partial trust scenarios, and extending syndication protocol support for wider usage in Web 2.0 applications.
• The .NET Framework Data Provider for SQL Server (SqlClient) adds new support for file stream and sparse column capabilities in SQL Server 2008.

First Look at Silverlight 2: I recommend reading this post first if you are looking to get started with Silverlight 2 development for the first time. It not only describes the high-level of what Silverlight 2 provides, but also links to a series of 8 blog posts that walkthrough building a Digg client sample application. DataGrid

Using the Silverlight DataGrid and Defining Columns for a Silverlight DataGrid: Scott Morrison has started a great series of posts that describe how to use the new Silverlight 2 DataGrid control (which he is the program manager for - so he definitely knows his stuff!).

Using Silverlight 2’s DataGrid with WCF + LINQ to SQL: This 15 minute video blog demonstrates how to build a LINQ to SQL object model on the server and publish it using WCF. It then demonstrates how to build a Silverlight client that uses the new Silverlight DataGrid control, and which calls the WCF service to retrieve the LINQ to SQL data to populate it with.

Simple Editing of Web Service Data in a DataGrid: Mike Taulty has a nice blog post that shows how to create a WCF service on the server, and then use it from a Silverlight 2 client to retrieve data, bind it to a DataGrid, allow users to update rows, add/delete rows, and then save it back to the server using Silverlight 2 Beta1.

Sorting with Silverlight 2’s DataGrid Control: The DataGrid control in Silverlight 2 Beta1 doesn’t yet have built-in column sorting support (it is coming in Beta2). That hasn’t stopped Matt Berseth though! In this post he shows how to implement sorting using a custom header column approach. Also check out Matt’s post here, which provides a DataGrid test page that shows off a number of the current DataGrid features.

Creating a Custom Skin for Silverlight’s Button Control: Matt Berseth has a great post that talks about the skinning and styling capability of Silverlight controls.

Writing a Templated Silverlight Control: Shawn Burke has an awesome post that details how to create a custom templated Silverlight control.

Improving Access to Silverlight’s Generic.xaml Resources (and read Part 2 here): David Anson has a great utility that demonstrates how to look up and extract the default XAML styling for the built-in Silverlight controls.
