A 15-year-old Facebook user in North Carolina didn’t think her parents would see her profanity-laden rant on Facebook about having to do chores. She was wrong, and her father, Tommy Jordan, introduced a new type of parental control for Facebook usage, of the 45-caliber variety.

Jordan, who works in information technology, fired nine rounds from his .45 into his daughter’s laptop after reading her rant in a YouTube video that is quickly approaching two million views in just three days.

Needless to say, when a video goes that viral, its creator is usually sought out for interviews, which Jordan addressed in a post on his Facebook page:

Attention Media Outlets:

While we appreciate the interest you’re all putting forth to get in touch with us regarding the video, we’re not going to go on your talk show, not going to call in to your radio show, and not going to be in your TV miniseries.

Some of you think I made an acceptable parenting decision, and others think I didn’t. However, I can’t think of any way myself or my daughter can respond to a media outlet that won’t be twisted out of context. The Dallas news TV news already showed that in their brief five-minute interview with the psychologist.

Additionally, there’s absolutely NO way I’m going to send my child the message that it’s OK to gain from something like this. It would send her a message that it’s OK to profit at the expense of someone else’s embarrassment or misfortune, and that’s now how I was raised, nor how she has been raised.

So I say thank you from all of us. If we have anything to say, we’ll say it here on Facebook, and we’ll say it publicly, but we won’t say it to a microphone or a camera. There are too many other REAL issues out there that could use this attention you’re giving us. My daughter isn’t hurt, emotionally scarred, or otherwise damaged, but that kind of publicity has never seemed to be to have a positive effect on any child or family.

If you’re a news outlet that wants to ask us a question, feel free to so via email. I’m sure by now my email address is easy enough to find. It might take me a while to get to a response because I’d have to sort through the “Die you bastard” emails to find it, but we will respond if it’s something that we feel merits it. Otherwise, sorry … no interviews, no talk shows, no call-ins.

If we respond to anything, it will be on here, and it will be in a way that our words can’t be misconstrued or edited for appeal to specific audience or shock value.

Now, I’m going to try to get to work for the day.

Best of luck to all of you out there .. and PLEASE give my phone a break.

Jordan’s description of the video on YouTube read:

My daughter thought it would be funny/rebellious/cool to post on her Facebook wall just how upset she was and how unfair her life here is; how we work her too hard with chores, never pay her for chores, and just in general make her life difficult.

She chose to share this with the entire world on Facebook and block her parents from seeing it. Well, umm … she failed. As of the end of this video, she won’t have to worry anymore about posting inappropriate things on Facebook.

Maybe a few kids can take something away from this: If you’re so disrespectful to your parents and yourself as to post this kind of thing on Facebook, you’re deserving of some tough love. Today, my daughter is getting a dose of tough love.

Readers: Do you think Jordan went too far, or do you think more parents should turn to discipline of this sort?

Twenty-one percent of employees are friends with their boss on Facebook, and those who do tend to be younger or male.

Twenty-one percent of employees are friends with their boss on Facebook, and those who do tend to be younger or male.

That’s based a survey of 1,000 adults conducted online by Russell Herder. Surveys conducted online tend to be self-selective and that can often skew results because more technologically-inclined types tend to participate. So the real proportion of Facebook users whose bosses count among their friends on the site could be way lower.

We’re intrigued by another statistic: five percent of the survey respondents used to be friends with their bosses on Facebook, and wish the poll had asked which party had ended the friendship. The latter can have legal repercussions for an employer if the employee loses his or her job at some point.

Legal issues aside, most of those who have Facebook friendships with their bosses said that talking to them via the social network has no impact on job performance.

Even so, Russell Herder makes five recommendations for human resources departments, all things that we’ve covered before but are worth repeating:

Draft an official social media policy;

Define appropriate boundaries between bosses and their reports;

Apply standards universally;

Don’t overreact (e.g., banning all use of social networks at work, firing people for using it, and so on); and

Consider implementing an inhouse private social network.

Carol Russell, chief executive officer, summed it all up:

Social media platforms provide both unique and complicated opportunities in a professional environment. The research emphasizes the importance of having a written social media policy, defining appropriate boundaries, and applying standards universally to all employees.

Facebook is testing a pilot program that allows participating advertisers to sponsor open graph actions and use them in sponsored story-type ads.

Facebook is testing a pilot program that allows participating advertisers to sponsor open graph actions and use them in sponsored story-type ads.

We’d gotten a tip about this yesterday from Eti Suruzon, vice president of media at Blink. Ticker stories about Pinterest included an arrow that only needed to be hovered over to open a window featuring the link her friend.

Pinterest is participating in a pilot program along with Ticketmaster, ScoreBig, AirBnB, according to VatorNews.

Right now, advertisers currently can only use user-initiated actions on their pages, applications, or local business places. But if the pilot program expands, it creates opportunities such as bands sponsoring when Facebook users listen to their songs, or TV studios sponsoring viewings of their fare on Hulu and Netflix.

Online ticketing service ScoreBig will use “save” and “made an offer” as its action verbs, and its vice president of products, Laura Goldberg, told VatorNews:

This new open graph function is a very exciting opportunity. It really brings social commerce and social events right onto a social platform, which adds to the experience.

Readers: Have you seen any ads that incorporate open graph actions?

Eighty-five percent percent of adults surveyed believe that visiting social networks like Facebook are a pleasant way to spend time; that figure comes close to the proportion of teenagers who've witnessed mean or cruel behavior on these sites.

The majority of adults, 85 percent, in a new study believe that visiting social networks like Facebook are a pleasant way to spend time.

The report was published today by Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life project.

Among the study’s highlights are these numbers:

Only a small sampling of adults said their experience on social networks was unpleasant. Five percent of adults said that people are mostly unkind on Facebook and other social media channels, while five percent said their answer depends on the situation.

The remainder of adult social network users said they didn’t know how to answer the question or refused to answer it.

When it came to unpleasant behavior on Facebook, adults have seen their share, but incidents occur far less frequently than with teens.

Pew’s study of adults reveals far different — and significantly more positive data — than a similar report issued late last year about the experiences online of young people aged 12 through 17.

Today’s report says that adults are somewhat more likely to stand back, not get involved, and ignore offensive behavior they find online. Pew’s study of teens revealed that one-quarter of the time a negative exchange on a social network led to a face-to-face argument.

Among the more disconcerting statistics from last year’s report:

A large majority, 88 percent, of social media-using teens have witnessed other users being mean or cruel on social networks, and

15 percent have been the target of online meanness.

However, more teens said they had positive experiences online rather than negative interactions, despite the antisocial behavior that many young people witnessed and experienced.

The data of adults on social networks was collected from a survey conducted by the Pew Research Center July 25 through August 26, 2011.

Do you agree with Pew that adults seem happier and behave appropriately on Facebook?

Classic Hasbro games have become popular on Facebook, and now that could move in the other direction thanks to an exclusive partnership with Zynga.

Zynga‘s games already reach an estmated 227 million players on Facebook, but an enormous potential audience could come from the partnership with Hasbro: Players 12 and younger.

Many of Zynga’s games are already suitable for younger players, but they largely haven’t been able to play any of them because Facebook’s minimum age requirement is 13, among other reasons.

The deal with Hasbro enables each company to create licensed versions of the other’s products, along with co-branded applications, toys and souvenir-type merchandise (imagine Zynga characters getting the same kind of plushie treatment that Rovio’s angry birds have gotten).

The two companies expect to release their first product together this fall, and haven’t specified which title comes first — other than listing three of Zynga’s titles as possible examples in the release: FarmVille, CityVille and Words With Friends.

Speaking of which, it will be interesting to see whether any kind of title merger occurs between Zynga’s category-leading Words With Friends and Hasbro’s Scrabble, which has had a difficult existence on the social network.

Hasbro’s Scrbble emerged on Facebook through a partnership with Electronic Arts, and after a copyright battle with the defunct Scrabulous, has never captured the kind of popularity enjoyed by Zynga’s Words With Friends.

Zynga Chief Executive Officer Mark Pincus said in a prepared statement:

It’s exciting to partner with Hasbro as we share a common vision for play and a mission to connect the world through games. This partnership is so special because it represents an exciting leap forward in enabling people to connect their virtual and real worlds. Hasbro has inspired play through their famous toys, games and action figures and we look forward to working with a company that continually creates meaningful and fun brands.

Hasbro’s President and Chief Executive Officer Brian Goldner said in a prepared statement:

Hasbro is thrilled to have the opportunity to bring Zynga’s immensely popular social games to life in a variety of creative and new expressions that reflect consumers’ growing desire to surround themselves with gaming brands they love anytime, anywhere together with their friends and family.

Zynga is bringing more games to mainstream culture and is redefining how people play. At Hasbro, we’re proud to help bring their games to even more people around the world. This strategic alliance plays off of both Hasbro’s and Zynga’s proven strengths and is emblematic of the new innovations and new platforms we are creating across our entire gaming portfolio.
