I am protestant, my girlfriend is mormon. We love each other more than anything and would love to get married, but she wants to stay true to her beliefs and get married in the temple. I respect and always have respected all her beliefs and accepted her as she is. However she will not marry me unless I convert. I would love to convert just to be with her, but I feel I need to convert for me too or we will not be happy. So far, I havent been led to convert. Just recently we tried to break up, in fact after 3 1/2 years together we broke up for 5 months. Now we are seeing each other again but nothing has changed. We are 20 years old and family is a really big issue. My family is strongly against Mormon beliefs and me converting, while hers will not accept anyone who Isn't mormon. I dont feel as if I can just go against my family, even though I know it is what needs to happen for us to be together. Any suggestions on what we should do? Does this make sense? Thanks for your help.

See the original question

Answer this question

See all questions

See all answers to this question

Ask a question

Updates by Email

I am Mormon but that is a question that I have yet to answer.. Most of my friends in Young Womens and Young Mens go to them before they are 14... Please help me!!

Answer by El Santo Gringo: Hi friend. The church teaches that we shouldn't date until we are 16 years old. If you want to go to a school dance with a large group of friends, perhaps that would be alright. Maybe your parents could give you some good advice. If you're planning on going to the dance with a specific young man, it is best to wait until you are 16 years old. I hope this answer helps! Good luck!

See the original question

Answer this question

See all questions

See all answers to this question

Ask a question

Updates by Email

How wonderful that you're interested in learning more about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "LDS" or "Mormon Church"). I've been a member of this church all my life, and it's been a great blessing. I'm happy to answer your question.

In our church, we have no professional clergy. Consequently, regular members are called upon to preach sermons in our meetings. The best talks of course teach about Jesus Christ. He is the central figure in our theology, our Redeemer and Savior. Other sermons describe methods we can use to draw closer to Christ, including prayer, scripture study, and other important practices. People often tell personal stories to illustrate gospel principles through experiences and allegories.

There are, of course, advantages to having a professional clergy. Sermons tend to be more "polished" when given by professionals. However, I prefer the mormon modus operandi. Asking regular members of the congregation to preach does a lot to strengthen their faith in Jesus Christ. Furthermore, the members of the congregation often have an easier time relating to the speaker, since they too are just regular members.

Let me know if you have any additional questions. In other words, how do we know Mitt Romney is just a big hypocrite??

Answer by Anonymous: Why are there so many devout non-denominational Christians in the country who feel Mormonism is a cult?

This question baffles most Mormons as well. I looked up definitions of Cult (dictionary.com) and found several definitions there. Some definitions would include all religions such as "a group or sect bound together by veneration of the same thing, person, ideal" (such as Christ). I did not find any that would fit the Mormon Church that would not fit most other religions as well. This belief by others may stem from the fact that we do have some beliefs that are different from many Christian denominations. For example, we believe in the Trinity (which we call the Godhead), but we believe they are three separate beings - God the Father; His Son Jesus Christ and the Holy Ghost - working together in perfect harmony as one monotheistic unit. We do not subscribe to all the tenants of the Nicene Creed regarding the Trinity. This creed written 300 years after Christ’s death was not pronounced or supported by Christ or the New Testament

See the original question

Answer this question

See all questions

See all answers to this question

Ask a question

Updates by Email

In other words, how do we know Mitt Romney is just a big hypocrite??

Answer by Anonymous: Let me try to answer some of your questions.

First: Some questions for you - do you have to be a born-again Christian - filled with the Holy Spirit - to be a Mormon?

Born-again can have different meanings to different people. In the New Testament, Christ told Nicodemus that he must be born again before he could see the Kingdom of God. He then said that a man must be born of the water and of the spirit to enter into the Kingdom of God. We believe in the teachings of Christ and fully believe this statement. We believe that a man must be baptized (born of the water) and must receive the Holy Ghost (born of the Spirit) to return to live with our Father in Heaven.

However, the term "born-again Christian" in today’s world may have other meanings. Typically, if you ask Mormons or non-Mormons if we are born again Christians, you may get various answers depending on these meanings. However, as outlined in by Christ in the book of John, being baptized into the Mormon Church with the confirmation of the Holy Ghost that follows would make someone a born again Christian.

See the original question

Answer this question

See all questions

See all answers to this question

Ask a question

Updates by Email

Sometimes, when I'm reading my scriptures or schoolwork and have a question, I'll start "talking" with Him like He's actually there with me, without all the kneeling and bowing and invvocations. I even feel that He "talks" back because my mind will be lead to new concepts and ideas that I've never considered before, until I'm either less confused or have the answer. Things like this even happen when I'm worried, nervous, or anxious about something. I'll start tlaking and asking for comfort/release and He'll let a question of mine rise to the top and together He helps me follow all the tangents until I realize that I'd forgotten my worry and I'm not scared anymore. What I am after any of these is just as relaxed(if not more than)as if I had been with my family, close friends, or myself. It reminds me that all my prayers are usually answered with peace or moments of "intuition", none of that "burning bosom" stuff. It doesn't seem that this way of communticating is traditional, and people seem shocked when I tell them this. What can I do or say to them to help them understand that I'm not trying to be sacreligious, or appear holier than them?

Answer by Peter: Hello Clarissa. For the most part, Mormons do the same kinds of things everyone else does. We work and play. We have families and careers. We try to be good members of the communities in which we live. Usually when people ask what Mormons can do, they really want to know what mormons can't do. :)

What Can't Mormons Do?
Mormons have great faith in Jesus Christ. They believe that accepting Jesus is a lot more than just feeling good about Him in their hearts. While this kind of faith is certainly very important, we truly accept Christ when we do the things He has asked us to do. That's why Mormons choose to give up some activities that others enjoy. They believe Jesus has asked them to sacrifice certain activities, and their dedication to Him is absolute. They believe that true happiness comes by following Jesus Christ.

So what are mormons not allowed to do? Well, nothing in the church is forced. Here's a list of essential things most practicing Mormons choose to do because of their faith in Jesus:

1. Mormons try to honor what we call "the law of chastity." This means sexual intimacy should only occur between a husband and a wife. Prior to marriage, self control is very important.

Video: Jesus Himself taught the beauty and sacredness of earthly sacrifice

2. Mormons "pay tithing." They donate 10% of their income to the church. This money isn't used to pay the local pastor; it goes directly to building chapels and temples and financing the church's missionary work. Tithing helps Mormons show God that they are truly dedicated to Him. They're not just paying lip service to God. They are willing to contribute.

3. Mormons follow their unique dietary standards, collectively called the "Word of Wisdom." God has asked the members of His church to avoid addictive substances. Addiction can make it hard to connect with God. That's why Mormons avoid illegal drugs, alcohol, tobacco, coffee, black tea, etc.

Video: What's it like to worship with the Mormons on a typical Sunday?

4. Mormons honor the "Sabbath day." They believe Christ has asked them to come to church each Sunday whenever they can. Worshiping as a community is very important in our culture.

5. Mormons, like everyone, sometimes make mistakes. We "sin" when we consciously choose to do something that displease God. Good Mormons should repent of their sins. To repent is to ask God for forgiveness, to accept Christ's sacrifice for our sins, and to abandon those sins. For some serious sins, it might be necessary to ask for help from a church leader, like a bishop. For most sins, praying to God and promising to change is enough.

6. Mormons believe in making sacred promises with God. These promises are called "covenants." Promises made at baptism are good examples of covenants. We also make personal covenants in our temples. Honoring these promises is very important for any good Mormon.

7. Mormons work hard to deal with their families according to church teachings. That means they should treat the members of their families with respect and try to honor each of them as children of God.

8. Mormons avoid supporting, joining, or agreeing with groups or individuals that oppose Church teachings. For example, good Mormons could not belong to the Klu Klux Klan because that organization teaches black people are inferior. Similarly, good Mormons cannot participate in organizations that accept polygamy (when a man marries more than one wife) because those organizations also violate church rules.

9. Mormons should be honest with their fellow men. This includes trying to keep the laws of the countries where they live and dealing justly with their business associates.

10. Mormons who have divorced have an important responsibility to honor their financial obligations to their former spouse and to their children.

Having learned what Mormons do, you might also be interested in learning what Mormons believe. Many wonder what mormons believe. There's actually very few core doctrines in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It's important that all members of the church believe in these core doctrines. Some members of the church are still pondering and praying about these doctrines so they can arrive at a true belief. That's okay too.

Who do Mormons Believe in?
Mormons believe that God is our Eternal Father. We also believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, the Savior and Redeemer of the world. We make promises (covenants) with God to do the things Christ has asked of us. We promise to "take His name upon us" by becoming His disciples. Keeping the promises we make with Christ is central to our faith. In addition to God the Father and God the Son, We also believe in the Holy Ghost.

Video: Joseph Smith was a modern-day prophet who restored Christ's ancient church in our days

Just as God called prophets anciently, He calls them in our days. We believe that in the 19th century, God called a boy named Joseph Smith to be a modern-day prophet. Through him, Jesus restored His ancient church in our days. That church is called The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

We believe that the current president of our church, Thomas S. Monson, is also a modern-day prophet. Prophets are not perfect, but they do receive messages from God that are important for us to know. We support our president as a "prophet, seer, and revelator," the only person who has the complete authority needed to run Christ's church on the earth and to perform sacred ceremonies in His name.

Just as Christ called apostles anciently, He has called some in our modern days. We support these apostles as "prophets, seers, and revelators" as well. We also support the other leaders of our church, both general and local.

What Mormons Really Believe
We believe that, to truly accept Jesus, we have to do the things He's asked us to do. Worshiping as a community is very important in our culture.

Video: Mormons believe Jesus suffered for our sins in a garden called Gethsemane and on the cross

Finally, Mormons believe in Jesus' power to save us from our sins. He sacrificed Himself for each of us as sinners; that's why He is our Savior and Redeemer. When we make mistakes, He wants us to ask Him for forgiveness and promise to abandon our sin. When someone fails to do the things Jesus has asked us all to do, he needs to apply Christ's sacrifice in his life so he can be freed from his sins. This process, called repentance, allows us to be morally clean once again.

Aside from these core doctrines, Mormons are pretty much free to believe whatever they like. Answer by El Santo Gringo: What are mormon beliefs? Many wonder what mormons believe. There's actually very few core doctrines in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It's important that all members of the church believe in these core doctrines. Some members of the church are still pondering and praying about these doctrines so they can arrive at a true belief. That's okay too. Who do Mormons Believe in?Mormons believe that God is our Eternal Father. Video: Joseph Smith was a modern-day prophet who restored Christ's ancient church in our daysJust as God called prophets anciently, He calls them in our days. What Mormons Really BelieveWe believe that, to truly accept Jesus, we have to do the things He's asked us to do. This includes: 1. Honoring what we call "the law of chastity." This means sexual intimacy should only occur between a husband and a wife. Prior to marriage, self control is very important. Video: Christ Himself taught the beauty and sacredness of earthly sacrifice2. Paying tithing. Mormons donate 10% of their income to the church. This money isn't used to pay the local pastor; it goes directly to building chapels and temples and financing the church's missionary work. Tithing helps Mormons show God that they are truly dedicated to Him. They're not just paying lip service to God. They are willing to contribute. 3. Keeping the Mormon dietary standards, collectively called the "Word of Wisdom." God has asked the members of His church to avoid addictive substances. Addiction can make it hard to connect with God. That's why Mormons avoid illegal drugs, alcohol, tobacco, coffee, black tea, etc. 4. Honoring the "Sabbath day." Mormons believe Christ has asked them to come to church each Sunday whenever they can. Worshiping as a community is very important in our culture. (Reflections of Christ)

Mormons are not Protestants. They're also not Catholics or Orthodox Christians. Mormons belong to a smaller branch of the Christian tree called "Restorationism." Restorationists believe that Christ's true gospel was lost to the world after the death of His apostles. His original Church was restored in our days through modern-day communication from God.

There are other restorationist Christian denominations as well, but Mormons are arguably the most well known.

Some mistakenly think Mormons claim to be Protestants because they claim to be Christians. There are some Protestant groups that try to assert an exclusive claim on the term "Christian." In reality, though, the term Christian does not refer to any one specific denomination. It is a general term that refers to any of the followers of Christ, be they Protestant, Catholic, Orthodox, or Mormon. Mormons follow Christ, so they are Christians. However, they do not claim to belong to any Protestant denomination.

See the original question

Answer this question

See all questions

See all answers to this question

Ask a question

Updates by Email

It's because we believe in The Book of Mormon, an ancient book of scripture that supports and complements the Holy Bible. Anti-Mormons gave us this nickname back in the 19th century. They meant it to be pejorative, but we ended up adopting the term.

While most Mormons are okay being called "Mormon," Mormons don't generally like it when people refer to their church as the "Mormon Church." I use this term only reluctantly on this site to appease Google. The church is properly called The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We like the official name of our church because it emphasizes our belief in the divinity of our Savior, Jesus.

See the original question

Answer this question

See all questions

See all answers to this question

Ask a question

Updates by Email

Nothing could be farther from the truth! My wife is an African-American mormon. She has always been welcome in the church. I know other black Mormons that are similarly happy in the church. You can find out for yourself what our worship style is like by visiting one of our chapels some time.

What do mormons believe about blacks?
Mormons believe that black people are children of God, just like any human being. God loves them just like He loves all His children. Every human being has infinite intrinsic worth, regardless of their race. Black people can serve in the church in the same leadership positions as anyone else. For example, I myself have had a black bishop on several occasions.

When did mormons allow blacks?
Like most every church, Mormons did not always have as enlightened an understanding as they do today. Black people were always welcome in our Church, and there have always been black Mormons. Mormons always taught that black people could be saved just like anyone else. However, for a time we adopted some Protestant ideas that lead us to ban black people from leadership positions within our church. All this changed decades ago. Most Mormons alive today were born after the ban was lifted and don't even know what it's like to have been a member of a church that placed restrictions on those with African heritage.

See the original question

Answer this question

See all questions

See all answers to this question

Ask a question

Updates by Email

The "Mormon Church," better called The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, started when a young man named Joseph Smith was confused about religion. He lived during a time when religion was a hot topic. Many preachers were trying to get people to join their churches. Joseph wasn't sure which church God wanted Him to join.

Since he was confused, he decided to read the Bible. He came across a passage in the book of James, chapter 1 verse 5: "If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you." This scripture had a big impact on the young Joseph.

Joseph Smith decided he'd do exactly what the Bible instructed. He went into a forest near his house and started to pray to God for guidance. Much to Joseph's surprise, the heavens were opened, and God the Father and His Son Jesus Christ appeared to him in a vision. They told Joseph that the true gospel of Jesus Christ had been lost when Christ's original apostles were killed. Jesus called Joseph to restore His ancient gospel in our modern days.

Video: A more complete version of Joseph's story

Joseph's story is truly incredible! He said he wouldn't believe it himself if it hadn't happened to him. The real miracle, though, is that each of us, after proper studying and pondering, can come to know for ourselves through prayer to God whether or not Joseph's story is true. God is anxious to respond to our sincere questions. Just as Joseph asked God for wisdom, so can we.

When did Mormons Start?
How long have mormons been around? Joseph had his vision in 1820. The church was formally organized in 1830.

Where did mormons start?
Where did mormons originate? Photo by Dale Wight.

A cult is a small group of religious people, often with a single charismatic leader, that uses methods like brain washing to control its members.

Do Mormons constitute a small religious group? No. Currently, there are over 14 million people who have been baptized in the LDS ("Mormon") Church. It is the fourth largest church in the United States and is growing rapidly throughout the world.

Does the Church have a single charismatic leader? No. In fact, there are thousands of leaders, called bishops, branch and stake presidents, seventies, apostles, and prophets. The highest council of the church is comprised of 15 people, not a single person. The president of the Church is a wonderful man who teaches many important principles, but he is elderly and cannot be reasonably called charismatic.

Does the Church use methods like brain washing to control its members? No. Brain washing doesn't exist in the Mormon Church. Mormons are capable and independent people. They don't follow blindly. There are mormons in high positions within governments, businesses, and the sciences. When people learn about Mormonism, many become interested. They aren't brain washed. They choose for themselves to further investigate our beliefs.

Mormonism is, in fact, a full religion in its own right, a unique branch of the Christian tree. It deserves to be respected like any other denomination.

See the original question

Answer this question

See all questions

See all answers to this question

Ask a question

Updates by Email

As Christians, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon Church") do celebrate Christmas. It's an excellent opportunity to remember and celebrate the birth of our Savior.

I recently heard the story of one Protestant woman who gave her Mormon friend a Christmas gift. The next Sunday, her pastor incorrectly preached that Mormons are not Christian. The Protestant woman, mortified that she had given a Christmas present to an alleged non-Christian, went to her friend and apologized. Of course no apology was necessary! Mormons are Christian, and they celebrate Christmas just as most other Christians do. You can learn more about our Christian beliefs by chatting with some of our missionaries.

See the original question

Answer this question

See all questions

See all answers to this question

Ask a question

Updates by Email

For those that have interest in gaining more knowledge you can visit Mormon.org, but that's already been posted earlier. Then for a free Book of Mormon if you've already gotten introduced to a missionary, or just as a general you can get it here. An item to remember is that you need a true want of learning rather than just saying you have read it for those that are already LDS, but maybe inactive. It assisted for me. The first time I read it my purpose was to say I finally had. So when I did the pray it was just a kind of want to see what it was like since I had a small testimony of it due to knowing the rest of the gospel was true. One thing that helped me in actually meaning it the second time was to take notes and summarize what I read so I was able to process it easier. That's just an advisory if you have a hard time getting the jist of it. That second time is when I truly meant my prayer.

See the original question

Add your comment

See all comments

Updates by Email

In fact, Mormons date each other much like others do. We do have high standards, meaning we avoid sexual intimacy before marriage. However, Mormon men and women often get together to pursue romantic relationships that may ultimately lead to marriage.

When can Mormons Date?
Often times, teenagers interested in pursuing their mormon friends wonder, "When are mormons allowed to date?" or "When can mormons kiss?" The Church encourages it's young members to wait until they are 16 years old before dating. Why can't mormons date until 16? While enjoyable and "fun," dating is also an important preparation for marriage. Furthermore, there are powerful, sexual feelings associated with dating, and it's important that those who date have a certain spiritual and mental maturity. When young teenagers date, disaster often results. On the other hand, when those who date are sufficiently mature, dating can be a wonderful preparation for the later, more important marriage relationship.

Who can Mormons Date?
The "Mormon Church" doesn't force anyone to do anything. Mormons are free to date whoever they like. However, the Church does encourage it's members to date other Mormons. Dating leads to marriage, and marriages are most successful when the husband and wife are unified in their common faith. Furthermore, mormons have special marriage ceremonies that can only take place between two people who are both members of our church.

Additionally, while there are many people outside of our church who have our same high standards, there are some who do not. Because Mormons believe that sexual intimacy should only occur after marriage, it is often easiest to date other mormons who have the same goals.

See the original question

Answer this question

See all questions

See all answers to this question

Ask a question

Updates by Email

First of all, Mormons think that everyone will be saved from physical death, thanks to the resurrection of Jesus Christ. We will all resurrect just as He did; death is not the end of our existence. Another important question is, "How can we be saved from the spiritual consequences of our sins?"

How Mormons Get to Heaven

Video: Jesus paid the price for our sins so we can return to live with God again one day.

How do mormons get to heaven? People can be saved from spiritual death (sin) by accepting Jesus, which means loving Him and following His commandments. In the end, God will judge us all based on the knowledge we had while we were alive. He's anxious to save as many people as He can.

Will Mormons go to heaven? Well, some will and some won't. Most Mormons are good people who are trying to follow God, so I think most will go to heaven. I think most baptists, catholics, muslims, etc. will also go to heaven. Some of these religions teach some things that aren't true, but if people are sincere in their efforts to follow God, He'll be merciful with them in the end.

Will Mormons Go to Hell?
Some people think that Mormons will go to hell because they teach a few things that other church's don't teach. They think this even though Mormons and other Christians have far more beliefs in common than beliefs that differ. It's silly to think that God will damn someone who sincerely tries to follow Him. Having an incorrect understanding of some specific doctrine is not going to keep anyone out of heaven. Why will mormons go to hell, then? God is going to be looking for reasons to save us rather than trying to find reasons to damn us. On the other hand, when we take advantage of the knowledge we do have, we gain the opportunity to progress spiritually, both in this life and after death. The Mormon Church does a great job of teaching us this important kind of knowledge.

See the original question

Answer this question

See all questions

See all answers to this question

Ask a question

Updates by Email

If you've heard a lot of false rumors about our church, you might consider chatting with some real Mormons to see what we actually believe.

Why do Mormons Practice Polygamy?
They don't! Polygamy is not allowed in the "Mormon Church." Can mormons have multiple wives? No. That would be adultery.

Why can Mormons have Multiple Wives?
My goodness, you are persistent! Let me explain further. Mormons did practice polygamy over 100 years ago, but the practice was abandoned. There were a few Mormons back then that didn't want to stop, so they created their own churches. These churches often have names very similar to the name of our church. For example, our church is officially called "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints." One of the polygamist churches chose the name "The FUNDAMENTALIST Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints." These other groups even call themselves Mormons sometimes, though they do not really belong to our church at all. This has caused a lot of confusion. The media has not helped the situation... they often confuse our church with other ones as well.

Why did Mormons Practice Polygamy?
No one knows for sure why God told some Mormons to practice polygamy back in the 19th century. There are lots of theories. Some people think God wanted to place a lot of children in strong families so they could help further Mormon culture and civilization. It is true that many Mormons in the United States would not be alive today if it weren't for polygamy, so there might be some merit to this theory. Other's think God commanded some Mormons to practice polygamy because He wanted to establish us as a distinct people, just as the Law of Moses set the ancient Israelites apart as a distinct people. The bottom line is, God never did explain Himself. I guess He doesn't have to. :)

When did mormons stop polygamy?
Many are curious, "When did mormons outlaw polygamy?" God gave a message to a leader of our church named Wilford Woodruff in 1890 stating that we should top practicing polygamy. A second message was given in 1904 re-emphasizing that the practice should be abandoned.

Which mormons are polygamists?
Now you know! The answer might surprize you!

Do Mormons Drink?

Joseph Smith was the first president of the Mormon Church. He received a message from God to restore Christ's ancient church in modern times.

Practicing Mormons don't typically drink alcohol. We believe that, to best connect with God, we have to avoid physical addictions. These kinds of addictions can be great distractions for those trying to live a spiritual life. In 1833, Joseph Smith, one of our earliest Church leaders, received a message from God called the "Word of Wisdom." This message described how to lead a healthy physical and spiritual life. Alcohol is one of the things God said to avoid.

Some still wonder, "When can mormons drink alcohol?" In reality, there is never a good time. There are no exceptions. Mormons believe alcohol should always be avoided.

Why Don't Mormons Drink Coffee?
That explains why Mormons don't drink alcohol, but some ask why mormons don't drink coffee. Coffee was also mentioned in the "Word of Wisdom." Even though coffee is arguably not as bad for the body as alcohol is, coffee is still addictive. Mormons believe these kinds of physical addictions should be avoided at all costs. They impede our ability to connect with God.

Why Don't Mormons Drink Hot Drinks?
The "Word of Wisdom" actually doesn't mention coffee by name. Instead, it talks generally about avoiding "hot drinks." Through additional messages given by God, Mormons have learned that "hot drinks" refer to coffee and black tea. Herbal teas are okay, unless they are made from the same plant as black tea. Other hot drinks like hot chocolate are okay.

Why Don't Mormons Drink Caffeine?
Some Mormons have noticed that both coffee and black tea have high amounts of caffeine, a substance that science has shown is addictive. This has led many Mormons to speculate that what God really wants us to avoid is caffeine. This may well be correct, but God has never specifically mentioned caffeine. Some Mormons choose to avoid caffeine in general, but the church does not require it.

Can Mormons Drink Soda?
Why can mormons drink Coke? Or Pepsi? Well, some Mormons choose to avoid caffeinated soda because they believe, as mentioned above, that God wants us to avoid caffeine. The Church does not prohibit Coke or Pepsi, however. Some Mormons do choose to drink these soft drinks.

See the original question

Answer this question

See all questions

See all answers to this question

Ask a question

Updates by Email

Don't be fooled by what you've heard. The answer is definitely yes!

What Mormons Believe about Jesus

For Mormons, Jesus Christ is the divine Son of God, our Savior and Redeemer through whom salvation is made possible. (Reflections of Christ)

Mormons do believe in Jesus. Who do Mormons say Jesus is? He is God the Son, the Savior of all mankind. He created the world! 2,000 years ago, He came to the earth and left teachings that are essential for our personal salvation. He sacrificed Himself for our sins, making it possible for us to be made right with God so we can return to Him one day. Jesus also overcame death with His resurrection. Thanks to His sacrifice, death will not be the end of us. We can live again with God one day.

What do Mormons believe about Jesus? We believe that salvation comes only through Him. We have to accept Him in order to progress spiritually after our death. Accepting Jesus means a lot more than just feeling good about Him in our hearts. We accept Jesus when we do the things He's asked us to do.

Why are Mormons not Christians?
This is a question Mormons often ask themselves! We are confused when others suggest that we're not followers of Jesus. The official name of our church is, after all, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Who do mormons worship? Is it Joseph Smith or some other leader of our church? Of course not. We worship Jesus Christ, God's very Son, who came to earth to save us from our sins.

Why aren't Mormons Christian? I have yet to hear a good answer to this question. We dedicate our whole lives to Jesus. Perhaps some of our beliefs about Jesus are somewhat unique, but our faith in Him as our Savior is undeniable. It seems unlikely to me that Jesus will damn to hell people like Mormons who have followed Him in good faith, even if some of their beliefs are a little off. Besides... I don't think our beliefs are off!

How Mormons Differ from Christians
This is a loaded question, because Mormons are Christians. It is true, though, that Mormons are a unique branch of Christianity. There are important differences between Mormons and Protestant, Catholic, and Orthodox Christian denominations. How are Mormons different than Christians? We believe that Jesus didn't just visit people in Israel. After His resurrection, He visited other people as well, including people in the ancient Western hemisphere. The people in the Western hemisphere also recorded Jesus' sacred words, just like Jesus' original apostles. We can find this record in the Book of Mormon. The Bible and The Book of Mormon together help us better understand what God wants us to do with our lives. Both these books are scripture.

We also believe that Jesus, God the Son, and Heavenly Father are physical beings who are physically separate from each other. However, they work together in perfect unity as one monotheistic unit, the "Godhead" or "Trinity."

Another significant difference relates to the authority to act in God's name. Mormons believe that shortly after the death of Christ and His apostles, the early Christian church was heavily influenced by Greek and Roman philosophies and politics. Despite the efforts of many noble men and women, the true Church of Christ was lost because of these external influences and internal changes realized by the hands of men. Mormons believe that God restored the original Christian Church, together with the authority to act in His name, in 1820 through a man named Joseph Smith.

See the original question

Answer this question

See all questions

See all answers to this question

Ask a question

Updates by Email

As of 2011, there were 8,521,430 Mormons in North America, 3,549,839 Mormons in South America, 1,024,218 Mormons in Asia, 485,403 Mormons in Europe, 482,783 Mormons in Oceania, and 318,947 Mormons in Africa. Mormons are located all over the world, including, probably, your very neighborhood!

Where did Mormons settle?
Historically, Mormons originally settled in the western United States, in a state called Utah. Our church actually started in New York State. Unfortunately, we had to move when we encountered persecution and political conflict in New York, Ohio, Missouri, and Illinois.

Why did Mormons Move West?
Many people fear others who are different. Back in the 19th century, many Mormons were tortured and even killed for their beliefs. Whenever we encountered people who began to harm us, we decided to move to another city to prevent suffering. In some places like Missouri, we were forced to leave. The governor of Missouri at the time, Lilburn W. Boggs, passed a law saying it was okay to "exterminate" Mormons.

Why did Mormons Move to Utah?
Eventually, we decided the best thing to do was to leave the United States all together. We decided to move west into the desert to a place where we would be left alone. We thought of several places, like California and Vancouver Island. We picked Utah because it was a rough desert, a land that other people would probably not care about. Utah decided to join the United States about 50 years after the Mormons settled there. Today, the headquarters of the "Mormon Church" are still based in Utah.

How did Mormons Get to Utah?
Cars hadn't been invented back in the 19th century, when Mormons moved to Utah. Most Mormons traveled using horse-drawn wagons. Those Mormons who were too poor to buy a wagon used hand carts, miniature wagons that were pulled by people instead of animals. Can you imagine pulling a hand-cart wagon thousands of miles?

Mormon converts from Europe traveled to the United States on boats. Eventually, a train was built that connected Utah to other parts of the United States. Some Mormons joined their friends who had settled in Utah years earlier by riding trains.

What did Mormons Hope to Find in the West?
Mostly, Mormons just wanted people to leave them alone so they could live in peace. We also wanted to build our identify as a people. Part of that was establishing a home land for ourselves, kind of like Israel is for the Jewish people.

What did the Mormons do in the West?
Mormons didn't limit themselves to Utah. They quickly expanded, forming something of an empire that extended from southern Canada to northern Mexico. Even today, there are Mormon colonies in Canada and Mexico, as well as scattered throughout the American west. People of other faiths have in most cases joined their Mormon friends in these communities, so that today they are more diverse.

See the original question

Answer this question

See all questions

See all answers to this question

Ask a question

Updates by Email

I recently joined the LDS church and I feel good about it. I don't want to leave it. But I have a few questions. I'm not criticizing, I just want some clarifications. Here goes. 1) Who are the gods mentioned in John 10:34 and Psalms 82:6? 2) Are Jehovah and Elohim distinct Gods? 3) Does the Bible teach about the salvation of the dead? 4) Are Mormon temples Christian? 5) Why does the LDS church teach that it is the only true church? 6) Are there any academic evidences of the Book of Mormon? 7) What is the influence of spiritism as taught by Allan Kardec in our church? 8) Do you use underclothing that contains occult symbols? 9) Has the church been immoral from its founding? I'd be very grateful if you could explain these things to me.

Answer by Loren: Carlos, The Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship may offer some further insight. The academia and scholarship found on this website is excellent.

The institute's mission statement: "By furthering religious scholarship through the study of scripture and other texts, Brigham Young University's Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship seeks to deepen understanding and nurture discipleship among Latter-day Saints while promoting mutual respect and goodwill among people of all faiths. "

Neal A. Maxwell's quote found on the home page is also a good summation of the purpose of the material found on this website: "LDS scholars can and should speak in the tongue of scholarship, but without coming to prefer it and without losing the mother tongue of faith. "

Sorry I didn't answer your questions directly (I've got to go get my kids in bed), but I hope this helps. I pray that God leads you to the answers you seek.

Godspeed,

Loren

See the original question

Answer this question

See all questions

See all answers to this question

Ask a question

Updates by Email

I'm happy you're trying to get to know The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Baptism is a very sacred ordinance. In any religion, it symbolizes a sacred commitment to God. However, it's also important to be baptized by someone who has the proper authority from God, called the "priesthood." This authority was had among Christ's ancient apostles, but it was lost when human philosophies were mixed with Christ's pure gospel. Fortunately, the authority has been restored in our days through a latter-day prophet and apostle named Joseph Smith.

That's why it's important to be baptized in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Baptism in other churches is an important symbol of one's commitment to God, but even those who are baptized elsewhere need to be rebaptized by someone who has authority from God to realize that important ceremony.

I invite you to formally start your investigation of the LDS Church by chatting with the Mormon missionaries. There are over 50,000 Mormon missionaries in the world who visit people in their homes to teach them more about Jesus Christ. Most people who are interested in Mormonism learn about our basic beliefs from these missionaries. You can request a missionary visit online.

You can also learn the address of the Mormon chapel nearest your house online. Please don't hesitate to visit us any Sunday morning (9:00) to see how we worship. The Book of Mormon was made to confirm the words of the Bible. Look up Ezekiel 37:15-17... Mormons believe that any words that come from prophets, apostles, or the Savior Himself should be considered scriptures. Certainly the Holy Bible is an example of scriptures. Other examples include the Book of Mormon.

Revelation 22:18-19 seems to suggest that there cannot be additional books of scripture beyond the Bible. However, scholars universally agree that this scripture refers only to the Book of Revelation, not to the whole Bible. How can they be so sure? Because when this verse was written, the many books of our modern Bible had not been compiled into a single book. The Bible did not yet exist.

One Mormon recently addressed this issue in a sermon that was broadcast worldwide:

"One of the arguments often used in any defense of a closed canon is the New Testament passage recorded in Revelation 22:18... However, there is now overwhelming consensus among virtually all biblical scholars that this verse applies only to the book of Revelation, not the whole Bible. Those scholars of our day acknowledge a number of New Testament 'books' that were almost certainly written after John’s revelation on the Isle of Patmos was received. Included in this category are at least the books of Jude, the three Epistles of John, and probably the entire Gospel of John itself. Perhaps there are even more than these.

But there is a simpler answer as to why that passage in the final book of the current New Testament cannot apply to the whole Bible. That is because the whole Bible as we know it--one collection of texts bound in a single volume--did not exist when that verse was written. For centuries after John produced his writing, the individual books of the New Testament were in circulation singly or perhaps in combinations with a few other texts but almost never as a complete collection. Of the entire corpus of 5,366 known Greek New Testament manuscripts, only 35 contain the whole New Testament as we now know it, and 34 of those were compiled after A.D. 1000.

The fact of the matter is that virtually every prophet of the Old and New Testament has added scripture to that received by his predecessors. If the Old Testament words of Moses were sufficient, as some could have mistakenly thought them to be, then why, for example, the subsequent prophecies of Isaiah or of Jeremiah, who follows him? To say nothing of Ezekiel and Daniel, of Joel, Amos, and all the rest. If one revelation to one prophet in one moment of time is sufficient for all time, what justifies these many others? What justifies them was made clear by Jehovah Himself when He said to Moses, "My works are without end, and... my words... never cease.'"

See the original question

Answer this question

See all questions

See all answers to this question

Ask a question

Updates by Email
