Once again, Southern Arkansas University will partner with local groups, individuals, and local schools in an effort to try to make every child in our county have a wonderful Christmas by hosting the Columbia County Angel Tree. SAU urges sponsors to select angels at this time. “We hope to be able to make Christmas great for needy families in our county,” said Sandra Martin, dean of SAU Housing. “There are a couple of ways people can help.”

Become a sponsor. No specific amount is required to be spent on each child, but $50-75 is suggested. For families, the same number of gifts is encouraged per child. Gifts need not be wrapped, but donors are welcome to provide a roll of wrapping paper for parents to use. You may select an Angel at https://angeltree.saumag.edu/.

Donate any amount of money, and SAU Housing will do the shopping. Small monetary gifts will be matched with Angels. Donations may be made at https://web.saumag.edu/angel-tree-donation/.

The Angel Tree serves children in need from infancy through high school seniors by providing sponsors with information about each child’s age, gender, sizes and gift requests. It also serves as an engine to the local economy. Conservative estimates suggest that sponsors donate more than $20,000 in clothing, toys and electronics every year.

Gifts are due by 5 p.m. Dec. 10 at the Nelson Hall (room 115) drop-off.

Southern Arkansas University Director of Athletics Steve Browning has announced that Brad Smiley has been named the 21st head coach of the Mulerider Football program; effective immediately. The official announcement was made at 11:35 a.m. on Friday, December 3. Smiley brings 27 years of highly successful collegiate offensive coaching experience at the NCAA Division I, NCAA FCS and NJCAA levels.

“After an extensive national search, it became evident that Coach Smiley was the right man to lead our football program,” said Browning. “His experience and success at multiple levels along with his vast knowledge of recruiting in our region stood out during this process. I would like to thank Dr. Berry for his leadership during this process and the search committee for an outstanding job working through an impressive candidate pool. We are excited to welcome him, Janna, Ben and Clary into the Mulerider family. We can’t wait to see where Coach Smiley takes this program!”

With a storied history dating all the way back to the program’s inaugural season of 1911, Smiley’s appointment as the newest leader of Mulerider Football will make him the sixth head coach in the program’s NCAA Era (1995-96) as he now begins the journey of directing the program into its 104thseason of action in the fall of 2022.

Grateful for the opportunity, Smiley immediately realized the potential of the university and its football program on his visit to south Arkansas during the hiring process. “After spending a day on campus, we walked away thinking Southern Arkansas Football was an absolute gold mine,” noted Smiley.

Smiley was impressed by the campus and facilities, but noted that it was the people that made the difference. “The campus and town were beautiful and the facilities were very impressive, but it was the people that sold us,” remarked Smiley. “Everyone we came in contact with was extremely welcoming, and showed that the support for Mulerider Football will be second to none. It feels great to know that Dr. Berry, Coach Browning and the selection committee all share my vision for this program, and all see how great we can be!”

Smiley comes to Magnolia from FCS Northwestern State of the Southland Conference where he has served as the Demons’ offensive coordinator and tight ends coach since the 2018 season. It was his second stint in central Louisiana as he coached tight ends and assisted with place kickers and special teams at NSU in 1996 and 1997.

While in Natchitoches, Smiley orchestrated multiple record-setting offenses, appropriately dubbed as the “Speed Demon” offense, which combined to set two dozen Northwestern State team and individual offensive records and included the school’s all-time leaders in passing yards, both career and single season, in passing touchdowns, both career and single game, in receptions, and in single-season receiving yards and touchdowns.

During his time with NSU, Smiley coached a pair of NCAA FCS All-Americans, one Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Year honoree, seven All-Southland Conference selections, multiple Louisiana Sports Writers Association (LWSA) award winners and he mentored the only two quarterbacks to toss for 400+ yards in a single game in program history.

Prior to his second stop at NSU, Smiley enjoyed 20 seasons over two stints at Trinity Valley Community College. He coached the offensive line and tight ends in 1998 and 1999 and returned as head coach in 2007 where he would lead the Cardinals to eight region playoff appearances, five region title game appearances, five conference titles, and three regional championships. Three times Smiley was named the conference’s coach of the year and in 2014 he was honored as the American Football Monthly Magazine National JUCO Coach of the Year.

In his final six seasons at TVCC, Smiley also served in the role of director of athletics. From 2013 to 2017, TVCC recorded a 49-9 record and spent 64 consecutive weeks ranked in the National Junior College Athletic Association Top 20 which included being ranked in the top 10 for 22 straight weeks. He remains the only coach in conference history to win five straight league championships.

His record-breaking offenses finished in the NJCAA’s top 10 in total offense seven times, including the nation’s best offensive output from 2014 through 2016. His rushing offenses finished in the top 10 nationally four times, while his passing attacks ranked in the top 10 six times, including four in the top five. Smiley coached 20 NJCAA All-Americans, six conference players of the year, three league MVP’s, one NJCAA National Player of the Year and 103 first and second team all-conference selections.

From 2000 to 2006, Smiley served in multiple capacities within the Tulane Football program working as a graduate assistant (offensive line) in 2000 and 2001 and coaching the Green Wave tight ends from 2002 to 2006. Smiley assisted in directing some of the top offenses to come through Tulane which produced three of the program’s top five all-time seasons in total offense and passing yardage and included the likes of program greats in quarterback Patrick Ramsey (former 1st round NFL draft pick), former NFL running backs Matt Forte and Mewelde Moore, and Seth Marler (2002 Lou Groza Award Winner).

With nearly three decades of collegiate coaching experience, Smiley has become extremely familiar with the region’s recruiting hot beds having spent ample time in the fertile areas of central and north Louisiana, central and east Texas, Dallas-Fort Worth the state of Arkansas and even central Florida. While at both Tulane and TVCC, Smiley served as the program’s recruiting coordinator.

Smiley got his start in the world of collegiate football in Waco, Texas, where he served as a student offensive assistant coach for Baylor in 1995 assisting with quarterbacks, wide receivers, and kicking specialists.
Four-time Super Bowl quarterback Terry Bradshaw enthusiastically and humorously urged a sold-out audience at Southern Arkansas University Tuesday night to live joyfully, embrace opportunities, and find reasons every day to be thankful. Bradshaw delivered his remarks as the 2021 Farmers Bank & Trust Distinguished Speaker in the W.T. Watson Gymnasium.

Dr. Trey Berry, president of SAU, welcomed friends and alumni. “Tonight is all about our students,” he said, stressing the importance of SAU’s history with Farmers Bank & Trust. “You can drive around this campus, in any direction, and see the influence of Farmers Bank. It was here from the very beginning.” Berry announced Kimber Birdsong of Prescott, Arkansas, and Seth Horn of Farmington, Arkansas, as the recipients of the Farmers Bank & Trust Scholarship. “Thanks to Farmers Bank for its indelible impact on generations of students,” Berry said.

Terry Bradshaw fires up the audience as the 2021 Farmers Bank & Trust Distinguished Speaker.

Elizabeth Burns Anderson, executive director of the Farmers Bank Foundation, announced the creation of the Dr. Bob Burns Endowment Fund, which will provide scholarships for generations to come.

Bradshaw used his signature humor to regale the audience with stories of inspiration and encouragement. “I knew from the age of seven that I wanted to play for the National Football League,” Bradshaw said. “When I put my hand on the football, something magic happened. Find the one thing in life that you want to do, and don’t let anybody talk you out of it.”

The 73-year-old Shreveport native played high school football at Woodlawn High. He was the No. 1 overall draft pick in 1970 from Louisiana Tech. Bradshaw became one of the most prolific quarterbacks in history, leading the Pittsburgh Steelers to four Super Bowl championships, six AFC championship games and eight straight playoff appearances (1972-79).

He encouraged the Magnolia Panther football team in advance of its upcoming playoff game in Little Rock. “Play the best you’ve ever played. I am a firm believer that if you believe it, it can happen.”

Bradshaw stressed the importance of good leadership, shaking hands, and offering a friendly smile. “Everybody follows somebody.” He also emphasized the need to express gratitude. “I love saying ‘thank you,’” he said. “The most important thing in life is how you approach people. You cannot be successful in life until you learn how to love everyone.”

With his warm, folksy humor, Bradshaw shared that living joyfully is more important than temporary happiness. “If your favorite team wins, you’re happy,” he said. “Joy sustains us. It’s rock solid. There should be something that triggers joy in your life, that says to you, ‘let’s go, let’s accept the challenge.’”

He said that throughout his career, he never lost faith in his abilities or in the knowledge that “God’s greatest gifts are compensation for trials and tribulations.” “I never was any good,” he said of his early football years. “I didn’t know how to snap, I couldn’t run out of my own way. Not one time did I ever question, ‘I’m going to the NFL.’ Pursue, pursue, pursue.”

He recalled his experiences in the huddle for the Pittsburgh Steelers as an example of leading people to victory. “I never yelled at anybody on the football field,” Bradshaw said. “I led them with love.”

The Magnolia community as well as students and visitors to Southern Arkansas University can now enjoy new outdoor fitness equipment located on the SAU Walking Trail. Twelve fitness stations were given in memory of Jay Adcox by his wife, Bonnie Adcox, and their children, Joseph and Sarah Adcox. Coach Adcox spent 36 years teaching in Health, Kinesiology and Recreation (HKR) as well as coaching collegiate football.

“I have seen so many use the trail. It is a neat asset to the University and the community,” said Bonnie Adcox. “To honor Jay’s memory, we thought about what he would want to see on campus and decided this might be something the community could use as people are getting more outside exercise.”

“I am really excited to have this new outdoor fitness equipment that not only our SAU students, faculty, and staff can utilize but also our Magnolia community,” said Sarah Adcox, director of the Mulerider Activity Center. “I think it’s going to be such a great addition to promote healthy, active lifestyles on our campus. My dad has been gone 10 years. I miss his knowledge and presence on campus and how much he loved SAU. This equipment is a great way to remember him and how much he meant to us as a family, but also how much he meant to the countless lives he touched over the years.” She gave the project her expertise on the types of equipment that would be best to install along the trail.

Jay had a passion for teaching lifelong healthy habits to hundreds of students. In his 25 years at SAU (1986-2011), he served as assistant football coach, defensive coordinator, chair of the HKR department, and Director of Athletics. Coach “A” was a beloved figure on the SAU campus. He passed away in 2011.

“Jay was a coach, first and foremost,” Bonnie said. “He loved athletics and believed in HKR. When he didn’t feel good, he would walk the farm road.” Given his love for the trail, the Adcox family chose to honor his memory by placing exercise equipment all along the path for the benefit of the public.

“There are a variety of machines,” said Bonnie. Walkers can pause at any of the 12 stations for a workout.

Patrons can scan the QR code located on each machine for a video that will show how each piece of equipment can be properly used. Doggie stations are also available so that walkers can “curb” their four-legged companions while enjoying the machines. The equipment will be monitored and cleaned frequently by SAU.

“It’s going to be nice and neat and fun for the community,” enthused Bonnie.

Jay Adcox was a native of Snoqualmie, Wash., and married to Bonnie for more than 37 years. At the time of his passing, he was in his 34th year in higher education and intercollegiate athletics. He was influential in helping to lead the department of HKR as they planned and moved into the Kathryn Brown HKR Complex and developed new academic degree programs in Exercise Science and Athletic Training. He was instrumental in the renovation and upgrading of all athletic facilities at SAU, including the construction of SAU’s first on-campus women’s softball field, expansion and improvements at the Walker Stadium baseball complex, and improvements to the Auburn Smith Fieldhouse.

Achievements in academics, campus growth, and a drastic reduction in positive COVID cases were highlighted by Dr. Trey Berry, president of Southern Arkansas University, in his report to the SAU System Board of Trustees on Thursday, Oct. 28. The Board heard a variety of agenda items, including academic program changes and a resolution on social media policy.

Berry thanked SAU’s faculty and staff for coming together in a time of crisis to minimize positive COVID numbers. With a total campus population of 4,434 students, Berry said there are only three positive cases, all of which are off-campus. He reported no positive cases among faculty and staff. Since the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, there have been no positive transmission cases in SAU classrooms. “This has been nothing short of a miracle,” Berry said, again thanking both the SAU and SAU Tech campuses for their efforts in meeting the crisis.

Dr. Trey Berry, left, and Monty Harrington

Turning to enrollment, SAU did experience a downturn in undergraduates in fall 2021, which Berry noted was seen at universities across the country. However, SAU saw a significant increase of 25 percent in its graduate programs and an increase of two students in overall enrollment. “We are very fortunate,” Berry said, adding that spring graduate enrollment numbers are also showing positive signs of growth.

New academic programs are making a difference at SAU, including the new Healthcare Administration major offered by the Rankin College of Business. Berry said this major will be attractive to students. “We know the jobs in this industry are out there,” he told the Board.

The new Poultry Education Center is up and running, having received its first batch of chickens in early September. “If you want to study poultry science, we are one of two places in the state where you can do that,” Berry said. “We are excited to bring this tradition back to SAU.”

He informed trustees that the College of Education and Human Performance was selected for a Forward Arkansas grant of $100,000. Of 16 universities to apply for the grant, SAU was one of only eight to receive this grant, which will enhance or encourage people in the education field. Berry also said the University’s Game Design and Animation, Engineering, and Nursing programs are all going strong, offering attractive educational opportunities.

“All our majors across campus are doing well,” Berry said. “It is so good to see all this life come back to our academic programs.”

He excitedly told the Board that the recently-concluded Love and Loyalty Campaign exceeded its $22.275 million goal by 33 percent, raising an extraordinary $29.7 million in five years.

The campaign touched every area of campus, Berry said. Highlights include a $100,000 grant by the Roy and Christine Sturgis Charitable and Educational Trust of Arkadelphia that will provide the majority of funding needed to purchase new uniforms for the growing Mulerider Band. Bussey Hall was the recipient of a grant from the Arkansas Natural and Cultural Resources Council (ANCRC) to restore the historic building to its original “1950s grandeur,” said Berry. And, Giving Day, on Sept. 16, set a record number of gifts from generous donors.

SAU Athletics continues to shine, with Mulerider student-athletes giving back to the community in various meaningful ways. And, Berry said, SAU participated in hurricane recovery by delivering a trailer full of donated supplies to hard-hit Raceland, Louisiana.

Finally, Berry said the new indoor training facility, the Dawson Athletic Complex, will soon open on the north side of the campus adjacent to the football field. “It will be transformational for our students,” Berry enthused.

Dr. Jason Morrison, chancellor of SAU Tech, gave the Board an update that included the addition of a second instructor for Tech’s new sonogram program. “We’re very excited,” Morrison said of the program, which will be available in the fall of 2022. “It will be the only program like it south of Little Rock and the only one offered at any two-year college in the state. Inquiries have already been tremendous.”

SAU Tech has also received a grant for $1 million to improve its WiFi capabilities and make 31 classrooms synchronized, to increase distance learning.

Another grant received by Tech for $1.5 million will be used to provide workforce training for 600 new and current workers for all industries in the Ouachita County Industrial Park and six surrounding counties. “This is a great opportunity,” Morrison said, noting that Tech receiving two such grants in as little as six months is a significant achievement.

In other business, the Board approved academic program changes recommended by Dr. David Lanoue, SAU’s provost and vice president for Academic Affairs, and Dr. Valerie Wilson, SAU’s vice chancellor for Academics and Planning, as well as the 2020-21 Minority Recruitment and Retention reports for both institutions. The Board also approved a social media resolution/policy presented by Roger Giles, vice president of Administration, and a resolution authorizing the sale of real property. After a brief executive session, the Board approved personnel changes.

The meeting was then adjourned.

Southern Arkansas University is excited to offer a new major in Healthcare Administration through the David F. Rankin College of Business. The degree will prepare students to work in various professional positions in the medical field, aiding doctors, nurses, and other specialists in healthcare delivery.

“The healthcare industry is expanding rapidly, and we see this as an opportunity to support that growth,” Dr. Robin Sronce, dean of the College of Business, said. “It fits well with SAU’s nursing, pre-health, and public health degrees. Students who want to be part of the healthcare industry might not realize the opportunities available that support and enable healthcare delivery.”

The program, to be delivered in-person and online, will prepare students to lead people, teams, and departments in facilities large and small. They will be able to run these organizations effectively while being mindful of patients, employees, and the larger community.

“Many of our graduates working in the healthcare industry encouraged us to prepare students for this growing area,” Sronce continued. “In designing the program, we worked with experienced professionals to ensure we balanced the need for business expertise with an awareness of people in the system.”

The program will utilize existing business and public health and nursing programs while adding four new classes. One online course will be taught by Dr. Karen Landry, director of SAU’s Nursing program. “Our faculty has expertise, and we will look to practitioners for additional support,” Sronce said. The College of Business plans to partner with a hospital system for internships.

Administrative positions in doctor’s offices, clinics and long-term care facilities could be as close as Magnolia, El Dorado, and Camden. Data positions in health information management, patient accounts support and IT application support, as well as human resources, home healthcare administration and insurance underwriting, are options in Shreveport, Dallas, Little Rock, Hot Springs, and Northwest Arkansas. “We are already seeing our graduates employed in these areas,” Sronce said.

Kile Pletcher, a 2018 graduate of SAU, put his degree in finance to work in a medical setting. “I always had an interest in the healthcare field, but decided to go the business route,” he said.

In 2019, Pletcher went to work as a financial analyst at Baptist Health thanks to skills he learned as a business major. “SAU did a phenomenal job in giving me the tools I needed to take on a multitude of tasks,” he explained. “I did not realize how simple a skill as Excel proficiency would help me in my job every day.”

SAU also taught Pletcher how to acquire new skills quickly and deliver professional presentations, both of which are essential in the medical setting.

“It is extremely exciting that SAU is launching this new program,” Pletcher shared. “It is definitely something I would have been interested in as an undergraduate.” Having an understanding of the different types of jobs and skills needed to advance toward an administrative career will be invaluable to students, he noted.

Students will take advanced business classes as well as major-specific courses focusing on healthcare.

Through the most ambitious comprehensive fundraising initiative in its 112-year history, Southern Arkansas University has far surpassed its goal of raising $22.275 million thanks to the generosity of Mulerider alumni and friends.

The Love and Loyalty Campaign, an effort to strengthen SAU’s commitment to affordability and innovation, began in October 2016 and concluded Oct. 9, 2021, having raised an extraordinary $29.7 million – exceeding the goal by 33 percent. The campaign benefitted student enrichment, academic programs, faculty and staff support, student life and community engagement, revitalized facilities, and Mulerider athletics.

“When Muleriders unite, we do wonderful things,” said Dr. Trey Berry, president of SAU. “Together, we went faster and further than anyone could have imagined five years ago. Thanks to our dedicated alumni, friends, faculty, and staff who showed their amazing love and loyalty for our University. Your collective power has transformed SAU and your impact will be felt for generations to come.”

That vision includes the establishment of over 100 new endowments during the life of the campaign. SAU now has 17 endowed faculty positions to help recruit and retain top faculty. With the help of devoted Muleriders, the University also experienced its first endowed Dean’s Chair and first endowed Department Chair.

The campaign focused on several key areas to help keep SAU competitive in a rapidly-changing educational environment. Students will have access to additional scholarships and travel opportunities thanks to the more than $10 million raised for student enrichment. Faculty and students can continue striving for their highest potential thanks to over $6.3 million raised for academic programs. An additional $1.6 million was invested in the leaders of today and tomorrow through faculty and staff support. And, the tradition of excellence in Mulerider Athletics lives on with over $4.5 million raised on behalf of student-athletes, coaches and athletic facilities.

Campaign Quick facts:

$29.7 million raised/$22.275 million goal

4,188 donors who gave 17,023 gifts

Foundation endowment growth to more than $52 million

Faculty/Staff Giving Percentage – over 82%

Over $2 million raised to benefit Student Life and Community and Community Engagement, including the Lusby Hospitality Pavilion, Alexander-Warnock and Ozmer Historic Farmstead and Learning Center, and the Farmers Bank & Trust Trap Shooting Range.

Over $2 million raised to ensure that such facilities as Harton Theatre and Bussey Hall remain viable for the future.
