The likes and loves are lucrative- for sure.

Nonetheless, I have decided to reboot the blog.

However, this time it will be different.
---
From now on, I will be switching from the technical blog to the vegetable garden blogs.

I will be discussing my journey through summertime gardening which I have developed in the past year through the COVID-19 pandemic. My garden is on Hardiness Zone 5, which makes it harder to work on a few of my favorite crops- going bananas etc... but it has been a learning experience for sure.

Some of the websites force autocomplete = "off" throwing off the possibility to save the password.
I first tried to open the webpage in the inspector mode, to change the autocomplete = "off" to "on". But next time the page loads, the autocomplete is off by default. So, that did not work!
Tried looking into the apps. Some of the older apps were no longer working!
This is simpler than I thought of installing another extension.

So, my understanding is that the spams that you get in Email or by phone is due to you saying "Yes" or "OK" at one of the occasions. Does not matter where, when or how.
Also, "Do not call" list does not matter anyway!

Today, I was talking to a customer representative for XYZ company. After dodging the robots who could "completely" understand all of my issues, I could get a hold of a human!
She started like this:
"Federal law requires that we protect your account information. Do I have your permission to discuss and send the promotions from our business associates?"
All of that within one breath!

Usually, I would say yes! But, I have to decline the offers.
It is a sneaky way to get your permission!
It seems that linkedin has turned on autoplay for the videos. Also, it seems that many people want to get rid of them.
The shortest route at the moment is the following link:
https://www.linkedin.com/psettings/videos
Then toggle the
"Auto-play videos that appear in your newsfeed" option. Then save the option.

A longer way to go about it is by going to your settings>manage video settings and then toggle the auto play thingy.
https://www.linkedin.com/settings/summary?

I hope you are able to figure it out as it is annoying to have things moving in frame automatically.

On December 22, 2015, spaceX made history by successfully put the payload into orbit, and returned the first stage safely back to earth and landed upright.

The vertical landing is in response to the challenge in flying reusable Falcon 9 Rocket:
http://aviationweek.com/blog/nasa-cnes-warn-spacex-challenges-flying-reusable-falcon-9-rocket

The Falcon 9 is already the lowest-cost rocket on the commercial market today. It is able to launch 5 million grams (4,850 kg) of payload to supersynchronous transfer orbit at roughly $60 million per launch, better than the Chinese Long March 3B at $70 million. The cost will be further lowered if they could reuse it as they've said the first stage is roughly 70% of the cost and just refueling the rocket costs about 0.3% of a full launch. Therefore, the potential to lower the cost is huge if they could pull off the vertical landing! That's why!!

The vertical landing made such a great splash that they shadowed the successful launch of 11 satellites into the orbit. People also forgot that it was the secondary target. The first being the successful launch. It is amusing to see this "been there, done that" kind of attitude. The primary target is already so risky, but since it has been achieved in the past, people are more interested in the secondary target. :) Here is the full video, enjoy!

I believe art is unique to conscious minds. So, the short answer is NO!

But, think about it, sometimes the art is also what you make out of it. I look into my son's scabble, and see some nice shapes in it. He did not create those shapes intentionally, but still, they resemble some weird abstract reflection of things that I could never draw intentionally. Some of the times, the guided line drawings lead to more failures than the free hand flow of an "un-artist". Can we define them as art? Probably, NO? Its open to interpretations.

Well, try this test at buzzfeed:
http://www.buzzfeed.com/jenlewis/quiz-can-you-tell-the-difference-between-modern-art-and-art
Did you pass with more than 60% success rate?

Now, if a robot is given a paintbrush and allowed to paint; Can you expect an art to come out of it?
Well, how about we put two modern arts sideways and lie to you that both came from one of the upcoming/super talented artist?

Well, studies have suggested that you could tell the difference...
http://bigthink.com/Picture-This/even-a-monkey-telling-good-abstract-art-from-bad

So, the answer still seems to be a NO!
Give it some time, may be the statement will change to affirmation in the future.
Couple of years ago I was ranting about how the technology may move in the direction of eliminating the syndicate of the phone companies... (an example here: http://ajabgajab.blogspot.com/2010/08/phone-internet-voip-and-nepal-telecom.html). One example was how the companies were trying to prevent the voip and force expensive STD/ISTD to the customers.
The main idea was that:
" the phone will be dead in coming few years as we will all have the (tax-paid) wifi on the cities and villages with people carrying small PDAs..."

Well, I think the future is here! Any who else better than Google to do it?
https://fi.google.com/about/experience/
Its a phone, on network and wifi. A seamless experience for the future.
One question I have is how long will the phone last with the wifi?

Just hope that Alphabet does not have a spring kill switch on it... as I think it is a neat idea!
At the moment it is available for only few cities (Boston, SF and Fresno), but will be available to your city soon!

It would be nice to crowdsource the algorithm to generate the map for all the other cities.
It does not take much of any controversy for a "community" site to go down in the page of history.
People jumped Digg for obvious reasons (see the link), and flocked into already crowded reddit. Recent controversy in reddit created quite a bit of mess: leading up to the departure of interim CEO. All these things are happening without properly settling the main issues about the trolling, anonymity and a proper balance to be achieved.

There are few things that happened in reddit that was bit unsettling such as manhunts, personal attacks and victimizations. Therefore, is it OK to have no control whatsoever? Which level of control, if any? Where is the balance?
Oh, where does the freedom of speech lie in this case? There is a saying, "You are free to move until you touch my nose". Well, I just made it up, but think about it.
What do you think? Which one is next? Slashdot?

I forgot to blog about it, because it was promptly resolved.

One of the evening, we went to watch a 3D movie in local theater. They had special wednesdays where the movie was very cheap. I think it was the Lorax by Dr. Seuss.

The movie started to play. The trailers first. I noted that all of the trailers were in 2D. Well, not a big deal the movie is still going to be in 3D right? Wrong!
The movie started and everything was flat. It did not take long to realize that and the people in the theater started to look into each other thinking what was going on!!

So, I stepped outside and told the ticketchecker that we have the 2D rolling, and showed him the ticket saying that it should be 3D. He looked and almost did not believe me. Then called into his walkie-talkie. After a minute or so, after they realized what was going on, the screen went dark, and the 3D movie started rolling from the beginning.

Yay for Dr. Seuss! However, I am not sure what their intentions were. I would like to assume that it is a simple clerical mistake. Just like putting mails into wrong envelop.

A M7.9 earthquake stuck Nepal on April 25th, resulting into the death of 4000 and counting.
Thanks to humanity, a lot of support is coming together.

There are few ways you can help:
1. Money
2. Mind, and time

Let me first go to the second point:
You can donate your time to help identify the collapsed houses so that these efforts could be used by the rescue and damage assessment teams.
Few examples:
1. the website tomnod :

So far 16,685 people have helped identify damage in #NepalEarthquake on @tomnod. Amazing response. Join the effort! http://t.co/mzndr6gSZo
— Shay Har-Noy (@iheartcrowds) April 28, 2015

http://www.tomnod.com/campaign/nepal_earthquake_2015/map/3f6x2y34

2. Mapbox made available a recent data for Kathmandu valley. It has been updated to trace the damages through the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap team. To learn how you can help map Nepal after the earthquake, head over to the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team wiki.
Now to the first point:
There are a lot of helping hands. Just be careful to which place your money is going. This is a hard fact.
If you would like to donate, here is a good list of agencies (go through the tabs):
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/18mYPr4zIl4zzUrKdrfe0hECRrWFumnke-dUWsxucZQw/htmlview?sle=true#
Facebook for example is matching donations to 2 millions.

Communication with family members: This is the biggest first wave that came in after the quake and aftershocks. Thankfully, the phone lines are working.
Skype, Viber T-mobile, ATT Verizon, etc have made it free to call from/to Nepal.
Google Voice has reduced it to 1 cent.

Good Luck!

Usually, mean implies the arithmetic mean... which is synonymous to average.
However, note that there are terms such as harmonic mean and geometric mean.
So, a person can argue with you that they are not the same! S/He has a point!
But, sometimes we become so familiar with a term, that we feel comfy in saying it in short... I mean!

Google Scholar has a great potential to become a powerful tool to scholars. However, as with Google's usual hobby of diving 20% deep into the pool, and then spring cleaning them. It is hard to not imagine the similar fate for Google Scholar.

1. Recommendations based upon My Citation is like driving forward by looking into the backmirror in a car. Published paper is the summary of things done in the past. There could be a recurring theme in one's profile, but today's research fields are dynamic. Seeing new items are exciting.
Google Scholar need to look forward. There is "My Librrary" feature. However, I have never seen any updates which nicely correlates with the items in the library.
The idea is simple: a mixed recommendations based upon citation as well as the "My Library" feature, which is already there!
You can shoot me down by saying that it is your job to search/seek. But, it is not hard to imagine how powerful it could be. Readcube does better job in this regard.
Well, a fun side to this story is a nice hacking diary detailing the steps involved in extracting superfish certificate.
You probably remember that your computer was preloaded with lots of bloatware, and had to uninstall some softwares or trials. I wish the computer box were sold with the option that let people do fresh install their OS.
Finally the rain is here in California!
California has seen the worst drought in history (ask @JayFamiglietti, for example!).

I would be interested to see how the map is updated after these rainy couple of days:
Howver, this weekend and through few of the weekdays, we will see some rain. Below I have copied snapshots of weather by NOAA.
The situation is almost like a welcome a song from the Bollywood movie "Lagaan" where they sing to the incoming rain.
The other day I was chatting on a chat service to solve some issue. These days the websites offer "instant help" with live agents. Chat bots have become very smart and progress in machine learning for symantics and ontological reasoning has progressed by leaps and bounds. An example: cleverbots
http://www.cleverbot.com/

Anyways, to begin with, I was greeted by a chat bot, which tried best to mimic humanly possible replies: with empathy and dutyfully. What I found to be cute was a typo it was making.
I think allowing the robots make small--harmless mistakes: such as a typo in this case, would make them more personable.

We expect the machines and robots to perform flawlessly. In critical sector that can be highly important. You want to avoid mistakes at 100% and be precise 100% of the time. But, think of interactive machines... so that people are not bored, it would make sense. Don't you love the sound of child making minor mistakes and going "Oh, oo!". That kind of mistakes.

However, it has to be within the limit of being annoyed though. For example, the first mistake in the chat was OK. The second becomes kind of weird.

My apologies up front if you landed here (thanks G) seeking for an algorithm for automated wifi channel selection. This is a very basic rant.
/rant-on
The internet router has a setting to avoid overcrowded channels. By setting it to decide on the auto channel, it is supposed to choose the one which is the least crowded. The problem is that there are other routers on the air doing the same thing. The end result: they end up in the same channel. (Well, I think they all are of the same kind.)
Here is a photo proof:

16 of them selected to be at 11, probably because all of them at some point figured that 11 was the best one!

Clearly, the plan is self defeating. A general advise on channel selection (word of mouth) is that channel 5 and 10 are usually crowded: "avoid them!!"
Well, if I am not wrong, after repeated tests (figures not included), I can conclude that the above statement is wrong!

Therefore, I have decided that it is not optimal anymore to let it auto select the channel. Because according to the game theory, they would play the same (defeating) game. The result is shown above where they love channel 1 and 11, which are supposed to be least attractive. By going into a set channel, say 10, or 2 or 5, or 8, whatever, you know what you are going for.

Have you set your router to an intelligent wifi channel selection?
So, my window went off the screen, and right click did not show the "move" option.
The easiest way to solve this issue is to press the windows button and arrows keys. Try Win+Left/Right/UP.

Does it do the trick?
The Win+arrow is a nice trick to stack the windows for multiple applications. For example, if you are reading a pdf, and want to make notes in notepad++ or something then you can select the pdf, press Win+Left Key. Then select the writing app and press Win+Right. This way, the apps share the 50% window each.

Cheers!
The following is completely unrelated Taskbar properties to manage windows in multiple displays.
