About 100 years ago John Elfreth Watkins, civil engineer, predicted that "Everybody will walk 10 miles a day" [see here what else was predicted ]. Of course that is not happening. To add more to the non-walking culture, now a seat steered-segway-like mobility device has been invented.

While it is absolutely good for person with disabilities, I am not sure if these will be used in the offices by healthy people as shown in the video:

People: please walk! I am looking at the video and remembering the WALL-E kind of hover chairs with big people on it.
Thats why I had sketched a stick man stretching. Reminding myself.

Nepali Fonts in Android: install read and type

1. This is how I installed devnagari scripts (or as some call it: "nepali fonts") in Android.
The tutorial is available here: http://manijshrestha.wordpress.com/2012/01/31/yet-another-way-to-install-nepalidevnagari-font-on-android-devices/ However, this requires root access. If you are not much into playing with the root, stay away! Dangers ahead!

2. A much simpler way to read devnagari scripts in android is to install Opera mini browser.

Below I show you the side by side comparison of the first and second methods:

The left is default browser showing nepali news site after installing fonts by method 1. The right shows the Opera browser after modifications suggested by method 2. The first method clearly beats the second. And if you wanted to type: use the third method.

Aakar already has posted the third method. Since I was confused while I was installing it, let me add little more snapshots just for references.

Four screenshots: allow, enable, long press (400 ms), and type. It is not handy at all to me.

I would rather go back to google's transliterations. Or, type in browser using the method here.

The next app we need in market is roman2nepali keyboard. Somebody just do it, come on!

I had spent some of my time designing the welcome page for BloggerDai page in facebook.

Only to find that facebook was rolling out the timeline feature for pages. So, I ranted a little in twitter... and then of course! changed my page layout. I like this new feature for pages, because it makes sense. It is more friendly for bloggers. Some may disagree! :P

Previously, I had to use either FBML (static: outdated now) or use app to create facebook pages. It was kinda nice that people would just land on the welcome page. Many brands used a force-"like us" feature. For example: amazon had forced "like us" feature to run many "sweepstakes". I wonder if it will be the same!

Tired of getting Email clutters in your mailbox with big attachments?
Well, try sharing in/from dropbox.
If your friend does not have dropbox, they have enabled links. (click on the link to learn more...)

You can simply get the link of the file and folder and Email it, so that your collaborators can download it. It is always easier than trying to send that 25.1MB report.

This screenshot was taken on Feb 2nd 2012. Now the total inbox count has crossed 20k.

Gmail started with a blast. The 2GB free Email storage was amazingly too much than what yahoo/hotmail and usa.net was offering at that time.
My friends started getting Gmail, but I received a late Gmail invitation. Many of my friends got it, and used it earlier than I did. So I wonder that you might have received it earlier than me.

What is the date stamp on your first Gmail?

Uncut grass, walk in a park and Old married couple -II

Well, this is the second of the series. The first one is here. I told you what happened in one of the Saturday morning in Birbal's time. Fast forward few hundred years, and here we are. Isn't it quite wonderful that we enjoy the same earth, share the same sun and moon just separated in time? (Well, we have polluted them a little bit. Nonetheless they are the same.)
Anyways, we went to a park one of the Saturday. We have to explore and enjoy the nature here in north Texas before it gets too hot to joy ("literally Baking hot", to put in one of my friend's word). Here are few pictures, taken from my android.

Then a cute thing happened. An old couple came by and sat on a bench... see the last picture.

Recovering Crashed CyanogenMod 7

My CM7 crashed again. This time after the software updates of the RoadVoyager
The reboot would not take it beyond the blue-skating android logo ---

Due to the sudden crash, I was out of the cell-network for one whole day. The worst part was that it happened on the morning commute. otherwise I could have used my other (opposite of smart) phone to receive the calls. I tried flashing it from internal memory, but it did not work. I had to do a data wipe. Anyways, in the evening, I got together and re-flashed CM7 from the sdcard.

One nice thing was that GooglePlay made a note of what programs I had installed.

Ask questions in Google Group #new features

Google group has proved to be a very useful forum.
I just noticed that they have featured asking questions in addition to the regular discussions.

For example, in Nepali Blogger's Google group, there are many technical questions related to blogging platform, codes etc.
On many occasions, Dilip dai and many others have been very kind to help-support new and old bloggers as well.
Now members can ask questions and get the answers. Moreover, one can also tag the questions so that it could be searched in the future.

I saw a news in techcrunch that the space increases if you upload something into the googleDocs. Just to test it, I uploaded a test txt file and my Google doc space increased to 5 GB. I took the screenshots, and here they are:

Not a big deal as everyone will get their 5GB in GoogleDrive. However, posted it anyway as I am awaiting to try Google's cloud drive.

Things that you are missing by searching from address bar

If you are a bit of computer person and you use chrome, then you probably search right from the address bar. Similarly, in opera you can type "g" and also search from the address bar (well, I have not used OPERA for some time now, correct me if I am wrong).
But, let me tell you. You are missing good stuffs by searching from the address bar.

You are missing the google doodle(not really, they are found here) that they do from time to time, and from time to time the tweaks that they perform on the home page.

Google's Cloud "Drive" too little too late

Rumors say that Google is going to launch its own cloud storage for the users. With dropbox, Sugarsync, Box and many others offering the cloud storage, it seems that Google is a late comer to dive into the cloud.

Let me remind you that Google already offered docs, picasa and many other free services which were effectively service-based storage (where?).

In the beginning days of Gmail, it was quite impressive to have few GB of free storage in Gmail while everyone else was offering few MB at the time: (remember the excitement of getting Gmail for the first time?).

Most of the Google's products growing out of the lab, as they claim, are the product of the 80/20 projects. However, somehow it seems, Google missed to allocate that 20% of the time for cloud-app development. Just, my guess. Now that there are already available services, it has to hit the market with a wow factor when it launches the cloud service.

I appreciate Google's efforts to emphasize the collaboration and its possibilites. And I am sure it is going to be reflected in the cloud too. In fact, application like dropbox is being used by many as a place to share folders and collaborate on many fronts. However, it seems people take Google as the search engine, an advertising agent, or an Email provider. And, Google is working on to change such impression. The Google+1 project is such attempt to bringing Google products in focus, and be used in collaboration. Therefore, cloud is inevitable. And, that makes me wonder why Google took too long to jump into the cloud?

Will this product be able to float? Only time will tell.

Uncut grass, walk in a park and Old married couple -I

Well, this post is the most random as it could be. However, let me try to connect the dots.

It is hard to find un-cut grasses. So, few pictures of uncut grasses. In many circumstances, I can not understand why they cut the grass to less than inches. This makes the land look bare, and consequently, exposing the soil to direct and brutal sun in the summer.

Another nice thing about the uncut grass is that in a nice season they ~~produce~~ accumulate dew in the morning. If you take a moment, to look into these dew-drops in the fresh sunlight, the reflection produce quite a nice effect. Thanks to physics we know what happens there [see more nice pics here].

I had heard of a story about these dew in the uncut grass in "Akbar and Birbal".
Once the king insulted (not the first time) Birbal (because he was accused of farting) and he was upset, and did not go to the palace for some long time.

The King was curious as to why he did not come. So, king himself went to visit Birbal.
It was one fine Saturday morning and Birbal was walking in his field. King was surprised to see him wandering alone in the field, and asked him what he was doing. Birbal replied that he was farming the moti, as he felt that he was no more fit for the royal service. King's eye turned big because it seemed like a good business. So he asked how could he do it too.
"However, there is one condition", Birbal said in deep voice. King asked, "What is that?"
-"Well in order to farm the moti, I need a person who have never farted in his life."
-"Let me find a person", said the king.

The same day, an announcement was sent throughout the kingdom in the search of a person who had never farted. Every citizens were asked whether s/he had farted in his/her life. Finally, the search committee came back with the negative result. They could find no one who had never leaked in their life.

Once the results were presented, Birbal said, "Well, dear King, I shall not be insulted because everybody does it."

So, now you know, these will turn into moti, instantly, but only if you satisfy certain conditions

Tornado touchdown confirmed in Dallas forth worth area.
DFW airport (@DFWairport ) has "activated Irregular Operations Plan", and is monitoring the situation.

Add Interests in facebook stream

Facebook wall is mostly filled with activities. If your FB friends are addicted to games or apps, it is going to be very near to the noise level.
One of the ways to handle such noise is to block the app or hide the story from the annoying app.

On the other hand, Facebook has come up with better way to keep users engaged. It is called interests (no, not pinterest! :P).

For example, if you are interested in food, or news, or something else, there is a list which you can subscribe to.

Google Blogger Removed Amazon Associates

If you noted, this little Amazon Associates box is not functional anymore. I used to think that amazon associate program is one of the not-so-good one. But, if you/your post can refer someone who buys books/items from the referral, you get a nice incentives. I am telling from my experience.

Anyways, Blogger used to have nice monitization integration with amazon, which seems to have gone now. So, if you want to add Amazon associate links, you have to go to https://affiliate-program.amazon.com/ and then work from there. Not so much convenient as it used to be.

Google has introduced Google play.
This integrates the books, music, movies, apps and games into one: play!

Google can be regarded as a successful player in the apps via android market.
Given that one has amazon for books, itunes for music and netflix for movies, this has tough challenges ahead and nice future if it succeeds.

I think, if google can make platform independent items which runs on say chrome: for books, games, it should work out! (My dream tweet)
