I fell in love with Yo La Tengo in 1998, partly because of a boy, but mostly because ‘I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One’ – I listened to it non-stop for months and months – bought older cds and listened non-stop. In 2004 I saw them live, these are Ira’s shoes (and nope, not zoomed in!)

That was taken right before he grabbed my hand, pulled me up on stage and dove out into the crowd. I was such a scaredy cat I jumped down just as quickly, thus filling a slot on my list of all-time regrets. I should’ve danced with Georgia and James!!

Now they’re on tour again, and actually coming to the city I live in. Countdown: 9 days!

Supplies

Masonite (Hardboard), 1″ x 2″ Plywood, Wood Glue, Nails, Hammer, Saw, Safety Goggles & a pencil

Trip to hardware store!

Bought a piece of 4ft x 8ft masonite ($12) – and had them cut it into 8 2ft x 2ft pieces. Also bought goggles and a little jigsaw (only $45 total, worth it if you’ll be doing a lot of sawing – hand saws are cheaper but SO much more work and time)

For the 1″x 2″ plywood – you’ll need enough to go around the edges of your masonite (depending on the size) – 2 sides of mine were 24″ and the other 2 sides were 21″ (subtract the width of the wood from your long pieces)

I measured and cut 2 of each sides to make sure everything fit together – then used one of each for a template for cutting the rest of the plywood. Made the process go lots faster! *A NOTE ABOUT SAFETY* Be careful and wear safety goggles while sawing. Your eyes and your little fingers are muy importante, keep them safe! Always be aware of the blade, read the saw’s directions and take your time!

Assembly

Place the masonite on the ground and the longer plywood piece next to it.

Put a little glue all along it and pull the masonite up on top and line it up flush with the edge. Put a nail in the first corner, make sure it’s still lined up and then do the same on the other corner. Put one or two nails inbetween if you’d like.

Do the same to the opposite side of the board, with the longer piece. These full sides will be the edges of the artwork because they’ll look a little nicer than the top and bottom edges.

Put a little glue on the shorter boards and squeeze them in between the outer boards and nail them into place.

Painting Prep

This is the fun part. Your panels might not look great – the wood is all different colors, maybe the plywood wasn’t the most perfect length? Who cares, ’cause once you put a few layers of gesso on they’re perfect!

Make sure and get all of the edges and little nooks and crannies.

And that’s it! For a little over $100 (including the big tub of gesso and jigsaw) + one afternoon I made 16 panels. The frames makes them look a bit more professional and easier to hang. If you’ve never painted on masonite before and would just like to try it you can always buy a small piece from the hardware store just to test it out first. If it’s small enough it won’t need a frame, just some gesso and you’re ready to go.

A while back I put together a drawing set organized by date on flickr. While looking at the thumbnails I noticed blocks of color forming that corresponded with different periods of time.

COLOR =

I was thinking about that a couple of days ago when I posted work by Hollis Brown Thornton and mentioned his wonderful use of color.

I’ve used Adobe Kuler before to pull in photos and grab colors from them, but had never done it with a large sampling of work. Using screenshots of thumbnails I was able to get a sense of an artists’ overall color theme. Of course it’s not exact because I’m pulling colors based on what sticks out to me, the results would be different for everyone.

There are a few below and I’ve done about 10 more that I’ll be posting over the next week!

Had a request for a 2010 at-a-glance a few weeks ago and decided to put a new little set together. Most of the pages are blank so that you can fill in the days / month / year yourself!

I use nice textured/thick paper for my planner and always print on both sides — depending on which side you’re printing you’ll want more space for a 3-hole punch! For that reason, the download contains duplicates of some pages pushed to the left or the right side of the page… I also recommend using the ‘fit to page’ printer setting which will make them a bit smaller but keep it from being cut off on the edges.

Above is just a basic daily page, choose the date on the top and then draw or take notes or whatever you’d like. There’s a 1 & 2 at the bottom that I imagined would be a to-do list – could be anything though!

This one is a monthly view but with an extra space under each week to include weekly notes, recurring appointments or events that span multiple days. So you can write those things underneath in the week space and leave room in the day for individual events.
