Air India

Bank of Scotland and Deutsche Bank have closed a $200 million PDP financing of eight 777 aircraft for the National Aviation Company of India.
Bank of Scotland and Deutsche Bank are global lead arrangers ING and Natixis Transport Finance are co-lead arrangers. Bank of Scotland is also acting as facility agent.
Though the pricing has not been reported, a banker close to the deal said the pricing was fair given the market conditions. One banker has suggested that it is an attractive piece of short-term paper, so syndication of the deal is unlikely.
Vedder Price acted as legal counsel for the lenders.

Wed, 06 Aug 2008 in which much speculation focussed on European takeover targets Iberia and Alitalia, Emirates sounded a reminder of the Middle East's strong presence in the aviation community. Continuing where it left off at the Air Show, the Dubai-based airline has leased eight aircraft from DAE. Meanwhile, JetBird's raising of $150 million in a private placement goes some way to establishing it as Europe's first low cost executive jet airline. But MaxJet's suspension of its shares following the axing of its Washington flights owing to poor customer demand raises questions about the viability of the low cost business model. With MaxJet's rival in transatlantic premium travel Silverjet posting less than satisfactory results and being forced to refinance twice, it will be interesting to see how Pan-European JetBird will fare.

Aircraft purchases by Air Asia and Thai Airways demonstrate the popularity of traditional financing structures, while ELF's engine deal with GSI using a trust structure represents a degree of innovation. The World Bank's loan to Pakistan airline Airblue highlights the vital role that airlines play in the economic growth of developing countries. And with UK Silverjet due to raise £22 million in fundraising, the appetite for aircraft investment remains healthy – despite fears of a looming
