In the offline world we all use our common-sense and our basic instincts to protect us from unscrupulous people. We're very careful about where and from whom we make purchases. For example, nearly everyone makes their purchases from businesses who openly display their wares in a welcoming looking storefront or office, rather than from someone selling sound systems from the trunk of his car.

We look for quality products, a good price, and a reasonable guarantee that the product will perform as described. We expect the seller to make things right if there is a problem, either by offering a refund, or – more often in the case of physical products - a replacement of the defective product.   

In other words, the more open, honest, and forthcoming a business appears, and the better we are treated when there is an issue, the more likely we are to do busines with them. It is no different on the internet. So I have stopped tip-toeing around. I am open and honest about who I am and what I do, just as I would be if I had an offline business. I want to earn the trust of people who visit my sites, and I want to offer good products and good service in return. Most internet marketers do the same.

I have made many purchases in my internet marketing journey, consisting of digital and physical products, as well as services. There have been a few times when I was disappointed in my purchase, but there was no scam or fraud involved, so I just let it go. There have been a few situations when I asked for a refund or cancelled a recurring billing. 

I am happy to report that in all but two instances my request was honored right away with no questions asked. In one instance I was offered another product in place of receiving a refund, but upon my refusal I was given an instant refund. All of these vendors acted professionally and offered good customer service.

That's why it is so jarring when good customer service practices are ignored. I recently had a negative experience with a digital product i purchased for resale from a team of marketers…two names you would probably recognize. It didn't work right. Yes, it could be fixed manually, but I PAID for it to work automatically. I sent 2 emails to 2 different addresses and a support ticket to yet another address – all of which I had to research to even find – and I heard not one word for over 3 weeks.

By the time I heard back from one of the team members…not the one I had emailed, by the way…it was too late. Even though he offered to manually fix the problem himself - conveniently ignoring my second option, which was a refund – his reply came too late. My trust has been broken, and I don't want to represent his product now.  

I realize that sometimes things happen. Sometimes we just make a mistake. So this could have just been one of those times. Except I did a Google search on their names, and there have been many similar complaints of requests for customer service being ignored. I will be watching them…and if I witness further disregard for other people's money, I will let you know who they are.

Whether poor customer service is a result of incompetence or sleazy practices makes little difference in the bottom line. You lose trust and customers either way.

So my plea to you new marketers out there is this. Treasure your customers – and potential customers – as if they are gold.  Because they are.

We explored whether or not you need a website, then how to drive traffic there. The importance of creating multiple streams of income. And finally, that you need to set yourself apart so you can stand out from the crowd in a competitive market.

Of course, as much as was covered here, it is still only the tip of the iceberg. It would take literally volumes to cover in-depth all aspects of this exciting and lucrative busness model.

The beauty of affiliate marketing is that it is such a huge industry, offering a multitude of avenues you can take to reach success. Each of you must find your own particular path and learn and develop the methods where you  can excell. I hope this series has sparked some ideas you want to explore for your own direction.

But…if this is such a great opportunity, why do so many fail? Why do some people work very hard, yet fail to make any money at all?

There are many reasons, but as in any field, not everyone is cut out to be an affiliate marketer or to be self-employed. Not everyone will succeed at everything they try.

So be realistic about your desire and your willingness to do what it takes, because to achieve huge rewards nearly always requires significant sacrifices. Remember though – just because you fail in one direction doesn't necessarily mean you should stop. If you really want something, learn from that experience and try again using a different angle.

There are two primary reasons for failure that stand out, however. The first group of people who will always fail in affiliate marketing are the ones who think this is an easy, no-work, get-rich-quick scheme. They will last only a few days and then will give up.

Another group who fails are those who give it an honest try, but they become hopelessly lost and frustrated, don't know what they are doing or what they should do next, and then they finally give up.

The very fact that there is so much to learn and so many avenues to follow is a stumbling block for many beginners. You may have what it takes, you are willing to learn and work hard, but you constantly lose focus and get off track, or spend hours trying to figure out technical tasks or in going down a road that will never lead to sales. You need a teacher…a mentor

How many of you went to a school where there were no teachers? Think about that. Can you imagine how many of us would fail if we had to get through 12 years of school – and more – by learning everything basically on our own?

Sounds silly, doesn't it? But for every newcomer in affiliate marketing, it is like entering that kindergarten room for the first time. Yet we all think we can do it on our own. Riiiiight…..

Find a mentor. It doesn't have to be a $15,000 one-on-one type of deal. There are many excellent membership programs you can join for a reasonable monthly fee – a few are even free – that can provide training, a focused plan of action, and a community of folks all thirsting for the same information and assistance.

Find and join one of these memberships. You will see that you aren't alone, you'll get answers to your questions, and you'll make friends. You will save countless hours of your time and you will avoid countless bouts of frustration by finding and following a mentor. 

The word mentor as defined in the dictionary is a wise and trusted teacher or counselor. Usually, they are experts in their field and give advice and guidance in their area of expertise. They have already been successful in their chosen field and are now willing to share their experience-based knowledge.  

They have been where you are, they have gone where you want to go, and they understand what you need.  Most importantly, they know first-hand the mistakes to avoid and can guide you more quickly to success. Most of them have reached their success by having mentors themselves.

So why try and re-invent the wheel?  Once you learn the basic skills and become aware of the various tracks you can take to affiliate marketing success, you will be equipped with everything you need to find your own path to success.

So what sets them apart? How do you become a super affiliate? What is their formula for success, since among the thousands of affiliate marketers only 1 to 5% of them reach this level?  And how have they overachieved their way to super affiliate stardom? 

First and foremost, every one of them treats affiliate marketing as a business.  They have taken the time to study and learn and become experts in search engine optimization, email and newsletter marketing, keyword optimization, link exchanges, and a multitude of advertising methods for their products and services. At the very least, they have a general understanding of each area, then they outsource the tasks they don't like, aren't expert in, or just don't like to do.

They understand the importance of using the right tools to build and grow an online business. The first thing is the necessity of having your own website and an autoresponder.  They understand that building your own list and creating a loyal customer base that you take good care of is a critical ingredient you must have to be successful.

They understand that competition is stiff and many of their competitors are promoting the exact same programs, in the exact same ways, even using the exact same websites.  So they distinguish themselves from the rest of the affiliate marketers by finding a unique and exceptional niche where they can have a strong leadership. They create their own ads, which encourage people to become curious enough to click through to their websites. They make sure that their potential customers aren't seeing the same ads over and over again.

They seek and find products or services that their customers can’t find with the other affiliate’s sites. They promote and sell products from different merchants as a means of protecting their businesses with multiple streams of income. They familiarize themselves with the products and know their audience. The know what their visitors want and they provide it.

They build traffic to their sites, they build lists, and they continue to market to their lists. They keep themselves updated on what’s new in affiliate marketing, learning and embracing the continual changes in online marketing business. They build a strong relationship with their customers, sending out quality content in order to develop credibility and trust. 

They are totally honest about the products they are marketing. If they should find out that a program they are promoting is a scam, or that refund requests are not honored, or that other promises made by the merchant are not kept, they stop promoting it and inform their subscribers about it.  I know…there are some who don't do these things, but do you see them around anymore? We all make mistakes, but a super affiliate will admit to a mistake, thus further boosting their credibility and the trust of their subscribers. 

They promote products which create customer-satisfaction, rather than solely seeking self-gratification. They know it is the customer who decides what to buy and not a company or an affiliate marketer. They offer products catering to the needs and wants of their chosen market segment.

And finally, what’s most important? They never, ever gave up. The affiliate marketing business is competitive and challenging, so only those equipped with knowledge, patience and persistence will successfully travel the road to super affiliate stardom.

In the current world economic market it is more important than ever to create multiple streams of affiliate marketing income. Being involved in affiliate marketing is one of the most desirable – and one of the easiest – ways to create multiple sources of income, so now is the time to capitalize on that opportunity.

Remember the adage, “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket”?  Affiliate marketing is an easy way to take heed of that advice and develop a diversified approach to making money online.  Affiliate marketing programs come in various shapes and forms, so you can be confident there will always be many genuine, quality products to promote and sell…or you can branch out and create your own.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with this business strategy. However, you should choose carefully and avoid the temptation of signing up for every affiliate program you see.  Select wisely, sticking with the programs that relate to your niche, that interest you so you can effectively advertise and promote them, and are products you know something about. Go with the ones that spark your enthusiasm and your passion and that will also capture your customer's interest.

The first step to take in creating multiple streams of income is to evaluate your resources. Start by assessing yourself. Ask yourself the following questions – jot them down in a list: What are your talents – your abilities, your strengths, your interests, your background? Are you gifted with excellent and creative writing skills or are you better at the technical skills? Are you a good salesperson? Can you communicate easily and effectively with people? Were you born with artistic skills or a unique ability that most others don’t have? 

Next, make a list of your assets and physical resources – your computer, color printer, scanner, video and digital cameras, cell phone, CD or DVD burner, etc. Follow that with a list of the things you already know how to do – typing, Word or Open Office skills, html and php coding, FTP, cpanel. You get the picture.

Don't forget to consider any friends and family members who may be willing and able to offer support or share their knowledge and resources. You can use the talents, abilities, knowledge and resources of people you know in exchange for something you can do for them. This can even lead to future joint ventures.

By completing these initial steps you will have an edge. You can plan your affiliate marketing business more effectively, selecting the best products and developing strategies and tactics which will help you advance your business and earn a reliable, steady stream of income from multiple sources.

Now, this is a huge topic, so I will only touch on some of the better known methods here, but it will provide an overview and get you started in your research, then you can concentrate on your own plan for what will work best for you. The first thing to understand is how search engines work and a bit about search engine optimization. 

What is search engine optimization?  Search engines are sophisticated pieces of technology which allow users to quickly find relevant websites by searching for a word or a phrase.  So for effective search engine optimization you need to include keywords and phrases within your content, properly targeting your market, and using those key words your prospects will actually search for. Making use of effective search engine optimization techniques will improve the page rank of your website, and over 90% of your business will likely come directly from search engine results.

Updating your website everyday and adding high quality content consistently will help you achieve high page rank. This seems simple, but many websites fail because they don't provide content that visitors find interesting. The successful sites are interesting, well-written and regularly updated, creating highly engaged visitors who return again and again. 

People on the internet are looking for information. The more relevant information you provide for them and the more helpful it is, the more likely you are to make the sale. Writing articles is the most effective way to build quality content for your site. As you build an archive of articles, make sure to include a directory so the search engines will catalog your online articles.   Your articles will add to the value that continues to draw online visitors.  

You should also develop a linking strategy as a part of your search engine optimization. Locate a family of other sites with related content, then contact the other webmasters for a possible link exchange partnership.  Not only does this provide free advertising for your site, but for each link that you have pointing back to you, that is another opportunity for your potential customer to find you. The more inbound links that you have pointing to your site, the higher you will be ranked in the search engines.

We can't have a discussion about traffic without mentioning Google's Adwords, one of Google's advertising services. I have never used this method and probably never will. It doesn't appeal to me for many reasons, but with the right preparation, that doesn't mean you shouldn't use it. It requires a vast amount of knowledge and skill to be successful, however; otherwise, you can lose your shirt.  Since it is usually quite costly, is cut-throat competitive, and only the experienced ones win, I don't recommend this at all for beginners. 

But you ask, how does Google Adwords work? Google, as you probably already know, is the largest search engine on the web, receiving over 200 million queries each day.  As such, webmasters are keen on having their websites rank high in the search engines, resulting  in high traffic for that website.  Google displays relevant text based ads within its search engine results page termed "Sponsored Links". Whenever a particular keyword is searched, these relevant links appear in a separate section, giving excellent exposure to the sites listed.

How do you use Google Adwords? In a nutshell…first, open an account; then create an ad group, design the ad, select keywords, and determine maximum cost per click that you are willing to spend. With a clear message, you will be attracting qualified leads, which can eventually convert to sales. Thus, the importance of selecting the right keywords cannot be overemphasized, and that is what makes this method tricky for beginners.

Google Adsense is a form of affiliate marketing, where Google acts as the intermediary between the affiliates and the merchants.  Compensation is on a pay-per-click basis.  Advertisers provide text ads pertaining to their products, and they pay Google a certain amount each time their ad on your site is clicked.  You place an Adsense code on your website and Google takes care of the rest, placing ads on your site that are generally relevant to the content of your site.  This can be advantageous for you, but it works better on some sites than on others.

For example, if you are promoting specific high commission affiliate products, it would actually be a disadvantage to place Adsense ads on your site, as they draw the visitors away from your site to ads that pay less.   

Now for my favorite. If you've been online for more than ten minutes, you have heard, "The money is in the list".  Many scoff at this and say it isn't true, that you don't need a list, but I disagree. While I'm sure you can make some money without a list, any serious online marketer has – and needs – a list of targeted people interested in their wares.  Your list is one of your most valuable assets. 

By using autoresponders to create message series and personalized newsletters to keep them aware of your new products and services and as a way of keeping track of them, you will have a ready audience that you can continue to grow. 

One of the easiest ways to build a list and reach a wide customer base in a short amount of time is through joint venture giveaways.  Now, I said easy…not effortless.  It does take a bit of work to learn and to get everything set up, but the rewards are great and can get you on your way quickly without spending a ton of cash.  You will benefit by participating in the upgrades (inexpensive), but you can do an entire giveaway and get signups absolutely free.  Having a responsive list will then allow you to expand your promotions and attract more traffic by participating in other types of joint ventures and ad swaps, as well as having a targeted crowd with whom you build trust and who will subsequently purchase from you.  

Now that you have an idea of the options available to you for generating traffic, it is important to spend time learning and knowing your market through and through.  A solid customer base is created by targeting those who have a special interest in the theme or topic of your website, so the better you know your market, the quicker you will attract the right visitors.   It's always advantageous to plan your moves in any business, so plan traffic generating strategies that will pull targeted traffic towards your website and convert them to sales.

I receive email offers and promotions every day telling me that with this or that product I can do affiliate marketing even without a website.  That is true – you really can start promoting and marketing affiliate products without a website.  Some of the ways this can be done are through email marketing, offline promotions, writing e-books, writing ezines and engaging in online discussions on forums, chats, and message boards.  The real question is, should you?

While starting in an affiliate program without a website may be possible, becoming truly successful in affiliate marketing without a website is another thing.   A few have probably gained enormous success without a website, but it is a rare instance that “newbies” can reach such levels of success.  So despite all the claims otherwise, I still recommend that you do need a website.

Having a website creates a lot of advantages in affiliate marketing.  It provides you a place where you can:  advertise your affiliate products to a wide market; creatively promote multiple products using your own style and personality; provide high-quality content and information to consumers who have a problem you can solve; and establish a reputation as a serious professional.  

One of the reasons many people are hesitant to get into affiliate marketing, however, is realizing they want and need a professional looking website, but they lack the skills or knowledge to create one.  How do you build an affiliate marketing website? What are the easy steps to build one? 

Don’t be disheartened. There are many page generation tools and fast launch sites available online, and there are countless online resources that can help you build an affiliate marketing website.  Whatever route you take, though, will require time to study and learn the whole process.  If you’re serious about affiliate marketing it is worthwhile to learn as much as you can. As you educate yourself in these fields, you are increasing your advantages against your competitors.

Now…let’s step back a bit.  If you are like most people, you are imaging a multi-page, incredibly complicated website.  Forget that!  All you really need is a one-page site – a “landing page“.  Landing pages are simply web pages where visitors are directed to do whatever you want your potential customer to do, be it to go to the merchant’s website or to click a web ad.  Landing pages are really no different from single web pages in a multi-page website. 

 Start out by creating one page for each affiliate product you want to promote.  Creating an affiliate website on your own would be cheaper and more interesting than hiring it out, and in the process you will increase your knowledge in information technology and the use of computers, softwares and the internet.  And you can do it!  Here is my favorite site for learning how to build your own website. The resources here can get you started easily and cost-effectively.

The first step to building your marketing website is to have an idea what products or services to promote and to decide on the theme or niche of your website. This will help you plan the design and lay-out of your web page.

 The next thing is to choose a domain name and get it hosted. The domain name is a unique name used to label the actual address of your website on the Internet.  To decide on your domain name, try to incorporate one or more keywords that relate to the type of product you are endorsing. Having the right keywords in your domain name will make it easier to attract visitors to your website. Also, choose the top level domain or extension, .com because it is most popular and generallycarries more authority.     
 
The next step is to present high quality content.  Don’t merely promote the product by putting up hyped-up ads. Keep your visitors interested by including relevant and useful information that will make them click the link to the business site and buy the product.  Remember that a poorly thought-out website means few visitors, no sales and ultimately, no commissions. 

Make your site simple but pleasing to the eyes and interesting to read, drawing your customer to take the right action. To help you with your design, check out some other websites promoting similar products, and this will give you ideas on how you can make your site look better.  Don’t copy anything word for word!  That is stealing and you will be violating someone’s copyright.

Being an affiliate marketer and growing your own business should be fun…as well as being challenging and profitable…so focus on what you like and what you do best, study and learn what you need to know, never give up, and you will achieve your goals.  And you will have your own website!

In order to determine the general interest in a product, you will need to research and learn how – and if – others are advertising those products.  Take a look also at the number of marketers promoting the product and compare pay per click prices of various products.

If you don’t find any advertisements, it means there is not enough demand and people are not going to buy.  Too much advertising can mean the competition level is high with not enough profit to go around.  Too much advertising drives up the price of pay per click ads as well.
 
 You can join affiliate forums to learn some tips and get suggestions from experienced affiliate marketers; however, it is still important to weigh their ideas based on your own research and to select the affiliate program that’s right for you. The way internet affiliate marketing programs work makes it easy to track and compare their sales records, performances, benefits, products and services.

You should also personally evaluate the quality of the products and services you decide to promote.  Your goal is not only to attract visitors to your site, but to promote the product so they will buy them, so make sure the products you are endorsing are worthwhile.

Ask yourself:  if I were the customer, would I buy it? Would I recommend it to my family or good friend? If you can’t answer yes to these questions, take another look at your options.

Next you need to take a look at the affiliate program’s history.  Look into their previous and present sales data, their marketing systems and their partners’ experiences with them.

Although success ultimately depends on you, this is very important. After all, why try to achieve success with a substandard company or program? Their sales records not only show how good the affiliates are, but they reveal information about the products’ reliability, market availability and the company’s reputation as well.

Don’t forget to look into and carefully study the company’s compensation plan. Your purpose for joining the program is to earn profits, so make sure you’ll be paid for all your efforts fairly.

And finally, select a program to promote which provides affiliate sales tools, such as banners, graphics and articles you can use on your landing pages or on your web site.  It is a nice bonus if the company also provides some training or tips on how to effectively market their products.

Affiliate marketing is a partnership, so make sure your partner is willing and able to support you as you work to promote his products and services.  

There is no “best affiliate marketing program,” as one program might  be a success to one and a failure to another.  In other words, as long as you do your basic research and select a good affiliate marketing program to start with, the final results will largely depend on you. Remember an informed choice is the best choice.

NOTE:  The research methods I mention above are more easily achieved when you are promoting a company or product that is on Clickbank or is a member of Commission Junction or some other affiliate network.

It is ok, of course, to promote programs that are not members of formal networks, but use your common sense here in making your selections, based on reputation and the quality and tone of the material.  It is even more important to actually purchase and use these products yourself before promoting them to others.

While a few of these stories may well be true, the vast majority of people will fail miserably in the internet business.  They will waste time, effort and too many resources trying to pursue their dreams if they go into affiliate marketing armed with nothing but myths and fantastical notions of wealth swimming in their heads. 

Just as in any other business, there are do’s and dont’s involved, and not learning what those are is bound to result in your downfall.  So let’s explore what the most common affiliate mistakes are and perhaps dispel the myths that abound.

Mistakes to Avoid:

1. Diving right in with no clue about what you are doing and not first researching and learning the basics of how affiliate marketing works.  You need to achieve a basic understanding of the principles iinvolved in this business, then you can fine-tune your knowledge as you go along. 
2. Not selecting the right product(s) to promote.  Don’t look for a product and then try to find someone to buy it.  There may not be a market for that item or people may not be willing to pay for that information.  Look first for a pressing need people have that they are willing to spend money on to solve, then find a product that will fill that need.
3. Don’t promote just one product.  If you select only one product to promote, and that product ends up being a dud, you will have spent a lot of time and effort for nothing.
4. Don’t promote too many products.  Select a couple of products that people need or want desparately, then select 3 advertising methods to use for each one.  If you offer customers too many options, they become confused and end up making no choice.
5. Losing focus.  It is very easy, when just starting out especially, to get distracted with all the possibilities of instant success or promises of a better product.  Chose your products, set up your marketing plan, then stick with it long enough to see if it is profitable.  You may need to try different products at the beginning to find ones that work for you, but stick with each one at least 2-3 weeks to see how it does before leaping on to the next bigger and better “thing”.
6. Not tracking your results.  Use tracking codes for each product and each advertisement or method so you can see what is working and what isn’t.  Evaluate what works best and stick with those that are successful, expanding your promotional efforts.  Dump the duds and move on to another product to test.
7. Using hype versus good content.  Don’t use screaming, unrealistic headlines or stuff your sites with banners that don’t provide enough information about the product.  Provide good content, as it is important for customers to know and understand the features of a product to help them make a decision to buy.
8. Giving up too soon.  Learning the ropes and setting up an effective affiliate marketing program takes time and effort, trial and error. 

None of these 8 mistakes are difficult to avoid, nor are they big mysterious secrets known by only a few.  But many would be affiliates are doomed to fail in this business if they do not exert enough effort to understand everything involved in the industry, and if they don’t follow a step-by- step plan of action.  In reality, the way to success in any worthwhile endeavor is to follow your path with commitment and a never-give-up attitude.

But it’s pretty scary to strike off on your own.   In fact, it takes a special kind of person to even consider such a move.  The reason so many people are starting an online business is because it is so much easier to get started than most other types of businesses…but even an affiliate marketer must possess within himself certain essential traits to achieve success.  There is a lot of competition involved in affiliate marketing, so only those who are able to rise above the norm and remain committed to their goals will stand out among the rest.
 
Just what are the things needed to be able to succeed in affiliate marketing?  What must you have within yourself to be able to do well in this industry?  I believe there are five essential traits you must possess, and they are:   

1. The first and most important trait you must possess is the right mind-set.  A positive attitude, with the belief that you can…and will…accomplish anything you set your mind to, is critical.  There will be plenty of others around you in the guise of friends and family who will be more than willing to dish out negative attitudes and discouraging words. 
2. The second trait you must possess is self-motivation.  If you want to get rid of your boss, you will need to have the ability to self-direct and to push yourself ahead.  You must be able to plan, set up goals and tasks, and then have the sticking power to see that you get them accomplished.
3. The third trait you must possess is the willingness to learn and be trained.  You will find yourself treading through a jungle of the unknown, which is not only scary, but also frustrating.  You must learn the tricks of the trade and be properly equipped.  The more you know, the better will be your advantages in dealing with a competitive market.
4. The fourth trait you must possess is discipline.  You will need to work everyday with all the energy you can muster.  Since you will be working from home, you cannot let outside distractions lead you astray,   Set specific work hours for yourself, then stick to them!  Leave the TV off; don’t answer every telephone call or read every text message, set certain times to return messages; and don’t start doing household chores just because you saw a mess in the kitchen.  You are at work! 
5. The fifth trait you must possess is commitment.  You must be willing to invest time and effort in your business even when you don’t see direct and immediate results.  Despite what the hype will have you believe, affiliate marketing does take time to learn, create and groom, so it is important that once you have your foot in the door of the industry to hold on and not give up.  If you are consistent and persistent, success is just around the corner, and it will find you. 

The ingredients to success in a business such as affiliate marketing are many and diverse, but the biggest key to success lies within yourself alone.  Striking out on your own is all about putting your fate into your own hands, so having the traits outlined above will help lead you on your journey to success.
