<blockquote><p>The idea that a magazine can be produced overnight and distributed worldwide, at a fraction of the cost magazines were once traditionally produced and distributed, is pretty phenomenal.</p>
<p>Some possibilities I could imagine: a tumblr like <a href="http://eatsleepdraw.com/">Eat, Sleep, Draw</a> producing a quarterly periodical highlighting the best content they’ve curated. They would only produce what is ordered, ensuring they would not suffer a loss on production.</p></blockquote>

<blockquote><p>Created in collaboration with the essential-oil company L’oeil du Vert, the fragrance has notes of wood, resin and rose that smell like the Moroccan vacation of a young filmmaker and her musician boyfriend. The always-contrary A.P.C. designer Jean Touitou — who hates perfume — wanted it to smell like the inside of a guitar case strewn with rose petals; the bottle, which he designed with M/M, is meant to resemble the waves on a computer screen that a 12-string guitar makes when playing the opening chord of the Kinks’ “Waterloo Sunset.” If you wear wrinkled scarves, old Converses and a secretly expensive trench coat and haven’t washed your A.P.C. jeans since Jarvis Cocker left Pulp, this one’s for you.</p></blockquote>

Hopefully I can keep this a weekly thing. Here goes:</p>
<p><strong>1. 3-D Hologram Gesturing Technology</strong><br />
<a title="D'strict" href="http://www.dstrict.com/reference/view.php?order=0&amp;amp;page=1&amp;amp;idx=31" target="_blank"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-595" title="dstrict" src="http://www.adrian-lai.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/dstrict.jpg" alt="dstrict" width="300" height="119" /></a><br />
<a href="http://www.dstrict.com/reference/view.php?order=0&amp;page=1&amp;idx=31">D&#8217;strict</a> is a Digital Media shop in Korea that&#8217;s doing some amazing work w/ display and experience design. <a href="http://www.dstrict.com/reference/view.php?order=0&amp;page=1&amp;idx=31">The J4</a> is a device they&#8217;ve developed that enables the user to control the display contents with simple hand shapes and gestures, thereby eliminating the need for a separate input tool.</p>
<p><span id="more-520"></span></p>
<p><strong>2. Designer as Photographer</strong><br />
<a title="Adobe XD" href="https://xd.adobe.com/#/featured/video/330" target="_blank"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-594" title="kimpimmel" src="http://www.adrian-lai.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/kimpimmel.jpg" alt="kimpimmel" width="300" height="199" /></a><br />
Inspring video feature on the Adobe XD site of <a href="https://xd.adobe.com/#/featured/video/330">Senior Experience Designer Kim Pimmel</a>. He takes us on a photowalk around the Richmond shipyard, shares a peek at his home studio, and explains how his photographer’s eye shapes his UI designs. To see more of Kim&#8217;s photos, visit his <a href="http://www.kimpimmel.com/">website</a>.</p>
<p><strong>3. Power of the Interface &#8211; Nikewomen Japan</strong><br />
<a title="Nike JP - Be Transformed" href="http://nike.jp/women/betransformed/" target="_blank"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-593" title="nikewomen" src="http://www.adrian-lai.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/nikewomen.jpg" alt="nikewomen" width="300" height="187" /></a><br />
Simple idea: Video series of a Nike training instructor teaching a celebrity Aerobics exercise. What makes this site special is the attention to detail and unique interface, making it fun to play and watch. <a href="http://nike.jp/women/betransformed/">Nike.jp &#8211; Be Transformed</a></p>
<p><strong>4. Best design practices in Papervision</strong><br />
<a title="Papervision" href="http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2009/08/10/discovering-papervision3d-best-design-practices-and-tutorials/" target="_blank"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-596" title="concavescream" src="http://www.adrian-lai.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/concavescream.jpg" alt="concavescream" width="300" height="187" /></a><br />
<a href="http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2009/08/10/discovering-papervision3d-best-design-practices-and-tutorials/">Smashing magazine</a> covers the best, recent sites using Papervision. This is a really comprehensive list and shows how Papervision can be used in your project, but keep in mind it&#8217;s not recommended for sites where simplicity and accessibility is essential. The <a href="http://www.concavescream.com/main.html">Concave Scream site</a> (the image above) is so dope! (Also covered by BBH Labs <a href="http://bbh-labs.com/music-data-flash-literature-interactivity-art-magic-awesome">here</a>)</p>
<p><strong><br />
5. Facade Projection</strong><br />
<object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="400" height="225" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=5595869&amp;server=vimeo.com&amp;show_title=1&amp;show_byline=1&amp;show_portrait=0&amp;color=&amp;fullscreen=1" /><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="400" height="225" src="http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=5595869&amp;server=vimeo.com&amp;show_title=1&amp;show_byline=1&amp;show_portrait=0&amp;color=&amp;fullscreen=1" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object></p>
<p><a href="http://vimeo.com/5595869">555 KUBIK | facade projection |</a> from <a href="http://vimeo.com/user1005725">urbanscreen</a> on <a href="http://vimeo.com">Vimeo</a>.</p>
<p>If houses could dream, what would they be? The description on the video profile page makes absolutely no sense, but this is an amazingly executed facade projection.</p>

We shouldn&#8217;t think of it as separate medium because at this point it&#8217;s THE thread that runs through everything we do. And instead of focusing on technology itself as device, a better approach would be to accept digital as a social and behavioral catalyst.</p>

I hate when a brand&#8217;s idea of a digital strategy is to put a video online, but this is a good example of how it can be done well&#8230;

A simple, content-heavy site screening the ad/video/viral for Nike SB&#8217;s new shoe</p>
<p>The video itself is brilliant for a number of reasons:</p>
<ul>
<li>Soundtrack &amp; cinematography</li>
<li>Lance Mountain as the cop</li>
<li>Kobe, P-Rod and Koston in the same scene. A nod to the fact that they are now all teammates on Nike&#8217;s roster.</li>
<li>P-Rod&#8217;s &#8220;Did that just happen?&#8221; moment at the end (I won&#8217;t ruin it for you!)</li>
</ul>
<p>Too good. Another job well done Nike SB.</p>
