Yes, that is my gorgeous mini van (call me a soccer mom and I’ll hit you so hard on the head you’ll have to unzip your fly to see where you’re going) with the bad-ass headlights to the right, in case you wondered. And it just looks like I parked like a woman because the lines are weird. Promise.

Sounds of silence

This place has been quiet while the rest of my life hasn’t. In fact, I feel like I should be whispering right now, if was typing this out loud. Which I’m technically not, but I am hearing the words in my head. Is it weird that the voice in my head sounds nothing like my actual voice?

Real life has finally kicked in again, and of course I’m busy. Everybody’s busy. Being busy is the biggest trend of our time. My kids were sick this week for about half a day, so I stayed home with them and spent the morning wiping vomit off of the couch. How is it that my kids are only sick for a few hours, but when I catch whatever it is they had, I’m wiped out for a good week and a half? Anyway, I actually really enjoyed having the whole day with them, especially because they were so sick that they pretty much spent it on my lap. I’m all set with cuddles for the next year or so.

In other news, the weather is doing that thing where it’s finally warm and periodically dry as soon as everyone’s back from vacation. Gotta love this town.

Hello there! I’m in Spain right now, enjoying two weeks of nothing but sun until I return to Rainyville. I’m blissfully internet and TV – less, but I did find me some 3G to ease the withdrawals. Things that confuse me, let me tell you them.

1. When two people are (insert low, suggestive voice here) in the bedroom in movies and it’s so romantic that you feel compelled to throw something at the TV – why, oh, why is the room always filled with lit candles? I mean, who has taken the time to light all the candles? Won’t it get dreadfully hot in there? What if her hair accidentally catches on fire? And more importantly, who are these people that bother blowing them out after the camera fades to black? In a movie I saw recently, the man suddenly and unexpectedly swept the woman into his arms and with great passion threw open the closed double doors that lead to her bedroom, where a candle was already lit. Did she anticipate his surprise visit, and furthermore, that one thing would so conveniently lead to another before the candle burned down?

2. I don’t understand laws that are made for the sole purpose of protecting people from themselves. I mean, a law that protects me from being harmed by any one of the billons of idiots that seem to habitate this Earth, that I can get behind. But when one of said idiots forgets to put his helmet on when he takes his motorcycle out for a spin into the nearest ditch? That’s natural selection. And really, who are we to mess with evolution?

3. Condoms in public restrooms. Say it with me; condoms in public restrooms. Do we really need to prepare for -and encourage- spontaneous intercourse in filthy, public venues?

4. Justin Bieber. Enough said.

5. I always wonder -and this is me getting all serious now, can you tell?- about people who devote their lives to saving animals. These people spend ridiculous amounts of time and resources rescuing stranded whales or lost ferrets or helping squirrels with broken ankles, but couldn’t care less about starving babies in underdeveloped countries or even helping people that struggle in their own neighborhoods. I can’t believe the air time devoted to various “Pet Rescue” shows, and yet nobody gives a crap about people who are dedicated to helping other people. This may seem a little contradictory to number 2 on my list, but I obviously don’t mean we should start helping annoying people. That’s even dumber than protesting against killing bunnies for fur.

Naturally, this is merely a limited sample of the massive confusion that is my thoughts at any given time. Consider this my gift to you. You’re welcome.

Gone Fishing

Another weekend gone before I even noticed it had started. How does that even happen? At least I snapped some photos to document its occurrence. And you’re so lucky I feel like sharing!

It was a little rainy on Saturday (no surprise there) so we decided to visit the penguins at the Aquarium instead of sitting at home watching the kids climb the curtains. Not that curtain-climbing isn’t quality entertainment, but after a while it just gets a little old, you know?

…and here’s what my boys are staring at.

How nerdy am I for not knowing that Gentoo is a Penguin and not just an operating system? Don’t answer that.

We arrived just in time to miss the seal show, so we walked inside to avoid the rain and to watch the reptiles and sharks instead.

A few hundred species of fish and other aquatic creatures later…

…we had successfully killed off an entire Saturday morning, and I hadn’t even wanted to bang my head against the wall once.

Though this little guy didn’t look half as cute when he refused to get up. I may or may not have bribed him with ice cream. Don’t judge me.

I often wonder how people find the time to do stuff. Like keep their homes clean. Or their cars. Or their children. And how do people have time to actually update their blogs or read the 331 items in their reader? These are things I think about when I’m sitting in some plane on the way to somewhere with absolutely nothing to do and no internet to do it with.

I’m not on a plane today, but it is my wedding anniversary. I can’t believe it’s been eight years since my 20 year old self walked down the aisle, not even a little bit prepared for what was waiting for me at the end. But I am so glad I did. Happy anniversary darling, and thank you for living with my crazy for eight years.

Do we look like a couple of 13 year olds, or what?

And please tell me you recognize the song title this time?

Glory Days

I’ve had the flu for the past week, and I’m not gonna lie to you; it’s been rough. When I get sick I get sick, so up until yesterday I’ve basically stayed horizontal. It’s not been a complete waste, though. For instance, I’ve learned that wearing a bra is overrated. And it’s true what they say about hair; if you don’t wash it for an extended period of time it practically starts to wash itself. That chic dirty look completely goes together with my slightly smelly sweats and underwear from Tuesday.

When I’m sick I also start thinking about seriously profound stuff, like life and mortality and whether zebras are really white with black stripes or the other way around. The other day when I was laying on the couch and wondering if I was finally about to meet my maker, I heard a loud thump! as a little sparrow flew straight into the living room window. Of course I immediately ran outside to check on the poor bird (I’m such an animal lover), and found it on the ground, trying to lift its head. I picked it up and held it in my hand for a few minutes while the sparrow gasped for breath. It was warm and soft, and I kept thinking I should do something to try and rescue the little thing, but I never even learned how to do mouth-to-mouth on a human, so I decided against it. Eventually the bird stopped moving around and its head fell back against my fingers, its little chest suddenly completely still. For a minute I simply stood there in my slippers holding a dead bird, not sure what to do. Do I just throw it behind a bush? Do I bury it? Throw it in the trash? It was still so warm and soft, and it felt a little wrong to just toss it away without, I don’t know, acknowledging its little existence on this Earth. Or something. I had a headache though, so I opted for the behind the bush scenario and went back inside to wash my hands.

I told my husband the riveting story about the bird when he came home that day, but to my surprise he didn’t appreciate how interesting my day had been. Or the obvious metaphor. Or anything. So that’s why I’m sharing this with you, dear reader, who will surely understand.

And because you held your breath wondering: the title for my last post was stolen from the song Sittin’ on top of the world by, oh, just about everybody. Now if you don’t recognize this post’s title I’m going to lose all faith in you, so make me proud!

The Gallery: Sittin’ on top of the world

The theme for this week’s The Gallery by the lovely ms. Sticky Fingers is The World Around Us. She’s clever, isn’t she? I’ve decided to show off my own little part of the world, because there’s no place like home, people.

We had the pleasure of having my sister in law and her boyfriend stay with us for several days a couple of weeks ago. He’s never been to this country before, so we thought we’d show him what western Norway is all about and take him for a drive to Lærdal. Not only is Lærdal hours away, those hours are mostly spent driving through endless tunnels. Lærdalstunnelen is the longest one, and because it’s 24,5 km long there are three quite beautifully lit spaces within the tunnel to make the drive less monotonous.

After having a shouting contest in the tunnel to hear the fabulous echo, we took a stroll at the Aurland Lookout. The view is absolutely breathtaking, and the crappy camera on my iTelephone does not do it justice. Standing up against that glass wall is also horribly scary.

If we’re ever gonna see a rainbow, we have to stand a little rain (or wind)

This weekend has been… confusing. We’ve had that spring weather where you look out the window and think it’s going to be sunny and warm, but then you actually step foot outside and it’s terribly cold and windy and you’re incredibly glad you were overprotective smart enough to dress the kids up in four layers and hats. Of course, you’re only wearing jeans and a t-shirt underneath the coat you almost left at home but decided to bring at the last minute just in case, and spend the whole time freezing your hot little behind off and wishing you were at home reading the 375 blog posts in your reader (why, God, why?).

Now, you’d think I’d learn my lesson after spending Saturday holding on to my kids for dear life to suck up all the warmth their little bodies could spare, and dress slightly more appropriately today. But if you did, you would not know me. I was, of course, genuinely surprised when the icy wind slapped me in the face as I opened the car door this afternoon. But I could not turn back; I had promised the kids we’d eat happy meals at the castle today. And we love castles. And McDonald’s. So I endured.

The castle at Gamlehaugen was built around 1900 and houses the Royal family when they visit Bergen. Pretty!

If I hadn’t been so cold this would have been really cute.

After enjoying our nutritious meals we walked around the grounds and tried to get our body temperatures up.

The kids succeeded, I did not. Which is why I’m currently snuggled up on my couch with a hot cup of tea and my favorite blanket, looking at this little beauty:

This Post Has No Title, Just Words and a Tune

Hello! How have you been? Great! Me? Yeah, I’ve been good. Life is doing that thing where it’s really busy and everyone’s birthday is in April because that’s nine months after we’ve all had our summer vacation (yes, that includes my kids’ birthdays) and I’ve been traveling a bit for work and my plane touched down literally one hour before the air space over everywhere was shut down because some volcano on Iceland decided to go all medieval on our hineys.

But thanks to some nasty virus attacking the hostess I got out of a(nother) birthday party this weekend and made an appointment with Super Morten and his Magic Hands™ for a haircut instead.

Behold the crazy that was my hair before I let the man loose with his tiny scissors:

Yes, Lance and Dave (or is it Mr Mona Lisa?), that is another one of my absolutely fabulous bathroom photos.

And no, I’m sure nobody at the salon thought I was crazy when I shamelessly photographed myself in the mirror.

Twice.

And after unspeakable amounts of hair had fallen to the ground…

…A new and changed woman emerged.

Goodness, I look so hot right now I’m practically seducing myself over here.
