Paying tribute this week to one of my idols, LARGE PROFESSOR. Born in Harlem and raised in Flushing, Queens, Large Professor (also know as Large Pro and Extra P) was mentored by legendary producer Paul C. McCasty (later naming his publishing imprint "Paul Sea" in tribute to his mentor, who was tragically murdered in tha early 90s). Large Professor broke onto tha scene in 1989 on independent rap label Actual records with Main Source; he produced and rapped on tha lead single "Think" (featured on this mix) and its equally dope B-side, "Atom." Main Source then signed to a larger independent, Wild Pitch which at that time was home to legendary hip-hop artists such as Gang Starr, the Coup, Latee and Chill Rob G. Large Professor immediately established himself as not only a top notch lyricist, but one of tha most creative producers in tha game.

This reputation was cemented as Large Professor went on to produce several tracks on tha album widely regarded as tha greatest hip-hop LP of all time, Nas' debut "Illmatic" -- including it's official lead single, "It Ain't Hard to Tell." Large Professor was tha only guest producer featured on A Tribe Called Quest's "Midnight Marauders" LP and produced and remixed gold and platinum records throughout tha early and mid-90s. At that time, along with DJ Premier, Pete Rock and Dr. Dre, Large Professor was considered to be on a small, elite list of hip-hop producers who could claim to be "Tha Best."

Main Source broke up before a second album could be recorded, and Large Professor signed a solo artist deal with Geffen Records, all while continuing with a very busy remix and production plate for artists like Leaders of the New School, Slick Rick, Diamond D, Young Disciples, and others. He also is alleged to have produced almost tha entirety of another undisputed classic hip-hop album, Kool G. Rap & DJ Polo's "Wanted: Dead of Alive." Eric B is credited as producer of this album however, and stories of beef between tha two producers have swirled since that album's release. Large Pro's "false producers are tellin' lies" line on "Snake Eyes" (also featured on this mix) is said to have been directed at Eric B.

Large Professor finished his Geffen debut LP in 1996, and two singles were released, "The Mad Scientist" and "Ijusswannachill" both of which were met with a positive response on tha streets, rap radio and in clubs. In one of tha great failures of modern music label beauraucracy, Geffen shelved tha album (named "The LP") and never released it. It has been bootleged, reissued, and re-released since that time, but Geffen's failure to drop "The LP" is nothing short of criminal, given Large Professor's high standing in hip-hop history.

Large Professor continues to release great hip-hop music to this date, including 2008's "The Main Source." Keep an eye out for him, as he is still one of tha best to ever touch an SP-1200....

2nd time around we are joined by beats me from distortion2static. i(brigidope) think it's better when we have a 3rd person in the studio. the first show dnz and i did, it was just the two of us. and after reviewing the show i kinda thought it sounded like we needed something else. dj wh0 is a pretty entertaining guy, but he likes having his job, so he won't be able to join us every week. beats me came out to lend us his personality and his dj talents and afterwards we all went out for ice cream sodas.

actually, we ended up at a spot down the block called san francisco pizza. i've no idea why there is a spot called san francisco pizza in the middle of downtown oakland. but they had this "manager bailout special" delicately handprinted on a a pizza box... "14in cheese/pep. pizza $5.00". a 14in pizza for 5 bucks? i had to try it. i wish i had my camera so you could see the pizza and more importantly, the handcrafted pizza box sign... but ye olde camera phone was dead so you'll just have to imagine a pizza that pretty much looked like any generic pizza. crust. sauce. cheese. pepperoni. it was worth the 5 bucks. didnt taste terrible. it was half decent but it sat weird in my stomach.
