 <description>&lt;span class='print-link'&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;!-- google_ad_section_start --&gt;&lt;p&gt;SAA/Y&amp;amp;R Tel Aviv wanted to show off Yellow Pages live search features and did so - by basically searching teh entire country of Israel. Over 1000 customized Yellow Pages billboards apperad all over the country, turning it into a live demonstration of search categories - breaking the boundaries of outdoor media by creating customized solutions for every billboard. My favorite - scratch cards! No wait, the revolving shawarma billboard! No wait, dang I can't pick a favorite.&lt;/p&gt;

Walter Thompson &lt;Blockquote&gt; She was initially singled out for her tall, statuesque appearance and bright auburn hair tied back in her polka-dot head scarf. They asked her to consider appearing in a promotional film about the war effort at home but she modestly declined not wanting to be singled out from the others. Regardless, the name was still officially coined. &lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.adcouncil.org/default.aspx?id=128"&gt;The War Advertising Council's Women in War Jobs campaign is the most successful advertising recruitment campaign in American history&lt;/a&gt;. You've seen the world famous image based on the idea of Rosie (though modelled by Geraldine Doyle), the woman rolling up her sleeve proclaiming "we can do it" has graced everything from postage stamps to the cover of Smithsonian magazine. In wartime it helped recruit more than &lt;U&gt;two million women&lt;/u&gt; into the workforce. The force of &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosie_the_Riveter"&gt;Rosie the riveter&lt;/a&gt; became a cultural icon, the &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Life_and_Times_of_Rosie_the_Riveter"&gt;subject of documentaries&lt;/a&gt;, a feminist symbol, the &lt;a href="http://www.mcphee.com/items/11024.html"&gt;action figure doll&lt;/a&gt;. All women in the workforce we're "Rosie" during the war, &lt;a href="http://savevsdeath.blogspot.com/2009/01/many-faces-of-rosie-riveter-1941-1945.html"&gt;Life magazine shows the many faces of Rosies&lt;/a&gt;, even a young &lt;a href="http://www.pophistorydig.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/1940s-rosie-m-monroe-50.jpg"&gt;Marilyn Monroe&lt;/a&gt; was a Rosie the Riveter.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;And to think, it all began when someone saw Rosalie Kunert in her polka dotted scarf at the Lockheed Airplane Factory in Burbank.&lt;br /&gt;

 <title>Rest in peace S-W-H, Long Live INDIE, Amsterdam instead.</title>

 <description>&lt;span class='print-link'&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;!-- google_ad_section_start --&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;img src="http://adland.tv/n1rv4n4g8/2009/may/markandme.jpg" align="left" /&gt; I bumped into Mark Aink in Cannes, as proven here with a blurry phoneshot from Gutter bar, and did ask him about &lt;a href="http://www.indie-amsterdam.com"&gt;Indie&lt;/a&gt; - the new agency born from what was once known as S-W-H. Can't for the life of me recall all the clever things he said (everything ever said at the gutter bar is the smartest thing ever, but it evaporates the next morning), but he did confess that relaunch of S-W-H to Indie is all part of a "reset", just like the one Balmer was talking about.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;All cleaned up and ready for their closeups, Mark Aink and Lode Schaeffer of Indie have much more to say about their metamorphosis.&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Managing Partner, Mark Aink says:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;p&gt;“First instincts can sometimes lead businesses to seek what they know and try to maintain stability despite changes occurring within their industry. It’s time for businesses, ours included, to realise that things aren’t changing but they’ve already changed.  The changes that we have made over the years within S-W-H are manifested in the roots of Indie.”

&lt;p&gt;Creative Director and Founding Partner of S-W-H, Lode Schaeffer, says:&lt;br /&gt;

“S-W-H was established in 1997. It doesn’t sound that long ago but, since then, we’ve seen exponential changes in the world around us, especially in the rise of new media. YouTube, camera-phones, TV on-demand, blogs, MP3, even Google didn’t exist back then, and now they are an everyday part of our lives. It’s a no-brainer that change has also occurred within our agency. Indie takes on board all of those changes and embraces them. We’re looking ahead to the not-yet-known.”&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

Indie made a splash in Cannes with a giant beach towel that proudly displayed their new name, which is much more than just a new name as Non-Executive Director, Tim O’Kennedy is keen to point out.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;p&gt;“Let’s be clear – this is more than a name change or a new logo. The birth of Indie is in direct response to where we see the industry going. We’re getting ahead of the curve, leading the call for change in the way agencies partner with clients and conduct business. It's a genuinely new day for a great agency.”&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;
&lt;p&gt;So instead of chasing the trends, will an advertising agency finally be on top of them? Indie's passport booklet points to a fundemental change at heart, the agency is fluid, the center is digital, the ideas are the core. Sounds like they have the right idea.&lt;/p&gt;

 <title>The Last Call Silent Disco</title>

 <description>&lt;span class='print-link'&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;!-- google_ad_section_start --&gt;&lt;p&gt;100 people from across Europe competing in a 24-hour silent disco, as part of a campaign to promote the new Samsung BEAT DJ mobile phone.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;From 6pm 7th July, contestants will begin listening to music on their BEAT DJ phones, and will attempt to continue dancing until 6pm 8th July. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;However, if the person receives a call or text during that time, they will be eliminated from the competition. Contestants have, therefore, spent the past few weeks informing family and friends to not contact them over the period.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The last contestant standing will receive €10,000 to take the Swedish singer September out to dinner, and keep whatever cash is left over.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The event, created by Lean Mean Fighting Machine, will be broadcast live in its entirety online at &lt;a href="http://www.thelastcall.tv" title="www.thelastcall.tv"&gt;www.thelastcall.tv&lt;/a&gt; &lt;http://www.thelastcall.tv/&gt; . In this parade everyone can march, there's a banner for "men who don't eat quiche" to "people who should have read the instructions" and it's chock full of cameos among others spotted are Michael Clarke, Wally Lewis, Paul De Gelder, Scott Cam, Molly Meldrum, Peter Russell Clarke, Dean Jones, Michael Klim, Billy Brownless and Greg Evans. David Nobay, creative chairman of Droga5 explains:&lt;br /&gt;

And to think, all United really needed to do here was buy Dave Carroll a nice Taylor guitar. He explains: &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;p&gt;In the spring of 2008, Sons of Maxwell were traveling to Nebraska for a one-week tour and my Taylor guitar was witnessed being thrown by United Airlines baggage handlers in Chicago. I discovered later that the $3500 guitar was severely damaged. They didnt deny the experience occurred but for nine months the various people I communicated with put the responsibility for dealing with the damage on everyone other than themselves and finally said they would do nothing to compensate me for my loss. &lt;p&gt;To promote the LG limited edition "Transformers" Versa phone, Bay helmed a :30 TVC titled "Deceptiphone" that plays on the Versa's cutting-edge features by comparing it to the shapeshifting abilities of a Transformer. Via ad agency Young &amp;amp; Rubicam, New York, the spot opens on a man leaving the movies, phone in hand. Much to his surprise, he comes face to face with Transformer Optimus Prime, who towers over him and booms "Decepticon!" The man assumes his mobile phone is being mistaken for the enemy robot, and shakily informs Optimus Prime that it's just the LG Versa. The phone however, springs to life in the palm of his hand, "transforming" into a camcorder, then a GPS device and finally a computer as the man looks on incredulously. But Optimus Prime insists he sees the enemy robot, just as the reveal shows the real Decepticon sneaking up from behind.&lt;/p&gt;

 <title>North Korea launches ...... beer adverts!</title>

 <description>&lt;span class='print-link'&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;!-- google_ad_section_start --&gt;&lt;p&gt;Nope, its's not a nuclear missile but it can have disastrous effects, possibly turning all the North Korean dudes into drooling Homers. There's pretty waitresses, hard working people, sunsets, and slowly poured beer eventually toasted by a cheerful worker complete with hard hat in this ad, coupled with what I assume is the North Korean version of pop music. In short - it's a classic beer ad, &lt;i&gt;just not as we know them&lt;/i&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;

"It represents the new look of Pyongyang," the two-and-a-half minute advert says. "It will be a familiar part of our lives."&lt;br /&gt;
Taedonggang Beer Factory has been making the brew since buying a British brewery and shipping it lock, stock and barrel from the UK in 2002.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;

&lt;p&gt;TBWA\Hunt\Lascaris has won a record number of Cannes Lions for its Trillion Dollar campaign for The Zimbabwean newspaper at the prestigious annual Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival.  This is the single most awarded campaign coming out of South Africa in Cannes’ 56 year history. This is the video that sent it roaring to the top of the heap of ads submitted.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;At the second awards ceremony, held on the 23rd June, the prominent South African agency scooped two Gold Media Lions for the best use of mixed media, one Gold Outdoor Lion for the best outdoor and a Grand Prix for their work done on The Zimbabwean Trillion Dollar campaign. This, along with the Silver Direct Lion awarded at the opening awards ceremony, brings the total awards won at Cannes by TBWA\Hunt\Lascaris for The Zimbabwean to an unprecedented five for a single campaign. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;To top it al of they won a Gold Titanium Lion and celebrated on stage by sharing a great big sloppy kiss on stage. For serious.&lt;/p&gt;

Over at agency.asia our favorite cigarsmoking silverbacked ad man is again in hot water ; &lt;a href="http://agency.asia/issue-03/130-interviews/269-brand-burma-debate-airasia-vs-neil-french-vs-mccann.html"&gt;brand burma debate air asia vs Neil French vs Mccann&lt;/a&gt;. Burma, as you all know (and &lt;a href="http://adland.tv/content/noneofusarefreeorg-burma-films-and-poster-ogilvy-and-shilo"&gt;recall the campaigns for&lt;/a&gt;) is a military dictatorship where the democratically elected Aung San Suu Kyi has been placed under house arrest and has recently gotten arrested &lt;a href="http://www.metafilter.com/81663/Aung-San-Suu-Kyi-arrested-after-her-home-was-invaded-by-an-American"&gt;when a loopy American invaded her home&lt;/a&gt; as obviously this is her fault.  &lt;a href="http://agency.asia/issue-02/125-insight/259-brand-burma-whos-doing-the-business.html"&gt;Agency.asia has created a shame list of business that deal with Burma&lt;/a&gt; to kick off a debate. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Next they decided to make an ad camapign. The question is &lt;i&gt;So, should the world do business with Burma?&lt;/i&gt; and a creative team was asked to make a campaign supporting it.&lt;a href="http://agency.asia/issue-03/130-interviews/269-brand-burma-debate-airasia-vs-neil-french-vs-mccann.html"&gt;scroll down to see their campaign&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;p&gt;As someone who spent his childhood in what was then the Communist Bloc, I was keen to work on a campaign taking this stance. Every totalitarian government actually wants the isolation. A boycott is actually rather welcome for them, while for the ordinary people it would seem to come as a final confirmation of what their government has been telling them all this time - that the outside world doesn't care about them, and all they have is their leaders. The basis of totalitarianism is the presumption that "somewhere out there, there is an enemy who hates us." By boycotting a country and hiding your true face, you are giving them the image of the enemy the junta needs so desperately for their ideological warfare. By ignoring the country and acting cold, you are allowing the Burmese government to speak for you to their own people, portraying you any way they want. The result is not only that you are not helping the ordinary people, but you are directly supporting the Generals' cause.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Then they called on the big guns, French who knows both Asia and controversy quite well. Neil French rebutted to the campaign: &lt;i&gt;"....Next time I have a bunch of students to teach, the campaign they'll be asked to produce will be a political one. But to make it easier, I'll choose a cause that has had its day; one whose denouement is common knowledge.."&lt;/i&gt; and made a few examples.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;p&gt;'Khmer Rouge; the future of Cambodia". The efforts of the new government to tackle the problem of overpopulation have not met with universal approval. But visitors to this beautiful land will appreciate the lack of hustle and bustle in the city, the quietness of the countryside, and the reasonably-priced child prostitution.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;

 <title>Moonfruit lounge's #moonfruit free macbook campaign killed by twitter?</title>

 <description>&lt;span class='print-link'&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;!-- google_ad_section_start --&gt;&lt;p&gt;Looks like #moonfruit was just a wee bit too successful as the very transparent campaign (whereby you could be one of the lucky winners of a brend new macbook if you tweeted the #moonfruit tag), as it seems to have been culled from the trending topics list. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;blockquote&gt;I’ve said it before in comments on other blogs, but this is probably a commercial channel for Twitter in the future (I’m sure they’ve thought about it! Maybe we've touched a nerve.) Perhaps there should be ‘commercial trends’ vs ‘normal trends’ lists. And its certainly been said that users should be able to filter their feeds to remove ‘commercial’ or unwanted tags.&lt;br /&gt;
What would help me is a clear understanding of what happened, and therefore what the new ‘rules of the game’ are going forward. What does this mean for topics on Twitter? What does it mean for marketers? If we were removed as ‘spam’, when did we become spam, was it ok for the first few days, just not after? And are the creative responses, videos, images, songs, etc. all just spam? (see 'Real people get creative with Moonfruit').&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;p&gt;I'll have to hand i to moonfruit, individuals creative responses to the macbook lottery made the topic fun. But free stuff for hashtags alone can indeed be interpreted as (clever) spam. Honestly now.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Since Twitter hasn't said a word about this, we can only assume here, but it does seem likely that #moonfruit was kicked out of trending topics. Perhaps this foretells a future of &lt;b&gt;paid for trending topic listings&lt;/b&gt; and other ickyness. God knows the spammers found #80stweets right fast.&lt;br /&gt;

 <title>Fight Twitter.</title>

 <description>&lt;span class='print-link'&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;!-- google_ad_section_start --&gt;&lt;p&gt;I usually ignore banner ads scrolling at the top of most every web site these days, but this one not only caught my attention, but it made me do a double take. Sometimes, as can be seen in this banner ad, words are put together in a way that have a tendency to imply something that was not intend. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;A HREF="http://www.thefightnetwork.com/"&gt;The Fight Network&lt;/a&gt; banner ad is not a call to arms for visitors to follow The Fight Network in its fight against Twitter, as I first thought, but rather it is inviting visitors to follow The Fight Network on Twitter.  At least, that is what I believe, but I have been wrong before. It is The Fight Network, after all.&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Air New Zealand says they do not add any extra fees to their low airfares, like some other airlines do. Checked baggage and complimentary refreshments are included in the fare. "What you see is what you pay" To prove that, they got some Air New Zealand staff volunteers, a camera crew, some brushes, lots of body paint, and went with the bare minimum to show Air New Zealand has "nothing to hide" for the new Air New Zealand television campaign, and an in-flight safety video.&lt;br /&gt;

 <title>Sand ads, giant towels, and now water ads!</title>

 <description>&lt;span class='print-link'&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;!-- google_ad_section_start --&gt;&lt;p&gt;Advertising has been on the beaches since forever, this is what we call a vacation (and since ad people never take a vacation we can't help advertising when we're supposed to).  There's been &lt;a href="http://adland.tv/ooh/nissan-sandstation-event-sand-ads"&gt;Nissan Sand Castle ads&lt;/a&gt;, there's &lt;a href="http://www.sandbillboards.eu/"&gt;sand billboards&lt;/a&gt; that we wrote about years ago, and most recently &lt;a href="http://finchfactor.com/2009/07/indies-giant-beach-towel-makes-a-cannes-splash/"&gt;in Cannes, S-W-H relaunched as Indie&lt;/a&gt; with a giant beach towel just last week. The sky is the limit - &lt;a href="http://adland.tv/content/link-lust-never-gonna-link-you-down-never-gonna-give-you"&gt;now there's even foam ads that can blow cloud logos all over&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;But lets not stop there, &lt;a href="http://www.brandfreak.com/2009/07/marketers-prepare-to-conquer-water-with-japans-wavevertising.html"&gt;Brandfreak has found a possible adspace in the surface of water&lt;/a&gt; -&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;blockquote&gt;Scientists at Japan's Akishima Laboratories have developed a technology that allows programmers to literally "write" messages on the surface of water. Its experimental device, which appeared stateside at the Museum of Modern Art last year, is called AMOEBA (Advanced Multiple Organized Experimental Basin). It's a cylindrical tub about 12 inches deep and a little over five feet in diameter. Fitted along the pool's rim are fifty trigger-type units equipped with plungers that agitate the water's surface. Programmed in unison, the plungers can create almost any configuration of ocean wave. (The device was originally developed to test hull performance on ship models.) But an enterprising student at the lab discovered that when the correct wave frequencies intersect, the water will also support messages. &lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Sci-fi movies have nothing on the real advertising future.&lt;br /&gt;
